OBIARUKU—THE kingship tussle in Amai Kingdom, Ukwuani Local Government Area, Delta State, has deepened, following threats by the people of Umuekum to pull out of the clan over alleged moves by the four other quarters of the kingdom to impose a traditional ruler on the people.
The people, in a communiqué at the end of a-one-day conference, alleged that Umuekum had suffered “several unfairness in the handling of its issues by the other four quarters in Amai,” noting that it was the turn of Umuekum to present candidate to be king of the kingdom.
The communiqué by Chief J. Ifeakanwa, Onotu-Uku of Umuekum, Chief Alfred Onyewonsa and others, said the “community stands by the nomination of Chief Andrew Ikogwe as its nominee and candidate to the vacant stool of Igwete of Amai.”
“Umuekum will not accept imposition of candidate to the stool by any quarter; any attempt to impose any candidate or usurp the turn of Umuekum indicates deliberate effort to force Umuekum from the union of traditionally administered five quarters of Amai.
“Umuekum shall evolve into an autonomous community if any declaration is made by anyone on the kingship matter that is under adjudication and litigation.”
They proclaimed Chief Ikogwe “as the Okei of Umuekum and king designate of Amai kingdom.”
