ABAKALIKi —EBONYI State government, yesterday, distributed relief materials worth over N30 million to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, from Azuoffia-Edda community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.

The relief materials include mattresses, cartons of noddles, bags of rice, clothes, mosquito treated nets and N100,000 each to the 148 families displaced following the crisis that erupted between the affected community in Ebonyi State and Ovuruokpon community in Cross River State.

Recall that the people of Ovuruokpon community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State were reported to have attacked Azuoffia-Edda community in Abakaliki  Local Government Area on January 10, 2016 in retaliation over an alleged beheading of a motorcyclist in Obubra  Local Government Area by their Ebonyi counterpart.

Handing over the materials to the displaced persons at the Government House, Abakaliki, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Kelechi Igwe, said the gesture was a demonstration of the present administration’s commitment to better the lot of Ebonyians at all times

The governor admonished the people to be grateful to God for keeping them alive despite their travail in the hands of their assailants, noting that the prompt action of the state government in securing the lives of people was what led to the low of casualties in the area.
