A 30-year-old housewife, Zubaida Mohammed, who allegedly fractured her 7-year-old step daughter’s ribs and leg, on Thursday appeared in a Jos Senior Magistrates Cour.

Mohammed, who resides at No. 8, Squadron Barracks, Jos, is facing a three-count charge of cruelty to child and causing grievous hurt.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Thomas Amuku told the court that Sgt. Iliya Emmanuel of the same address arrested and took the accused to the Anglo-Jos Police Station on Jan. 14.

Amuku said the complainant received the information from the accused neighbours that she had always mistreated her step-daughter.

“The day the complainant deiced to go to the accused person’s residence, he caught her right in the ac t inflicting cuts on the child with a razor,’’ he said.

He alleged that the accused was in a habit of beating up the child and starving her of food, but hide her each time neighbours or the police tried to rescue her.

“The police had to go to the house through the window to rescue the child because they heard her cries,” he said.

Amuku also told the court that during police investigation, it was discovered that the victim had three broken ribs, one broken leg, a damaged eye, and several razor cuts on her body.

“She was also malnourished and was unable to attend school most times,’’ he said.

The accused, who had no legal representation pleaded not guilty to the charge.

She told the court that she did not inflict the injuries on her step-daughter intentionally.

“I did not do it intentionally, I only pushed her with my leg and she fell on the side of the door, I did not know she broke her ribs or fractured her leg.

“I did not refuse to give her food, I only gave her the little I have,” she said.

The Magistrate, Mr Jovita Binjin, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 and two sureties in like sum.

Binjin said the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must have landed properties within Jos metropolis.

He asked the sureties to submit copies of their recent passport photographs, National Identity card or permanent voter card and adjourned the case until Feb. 17 for mention. (NAN)
