NATIONAL Delegates Conference, NDC, of National Union of Civil Engineering, Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers, NUCECFWW, billed for tomorrow in Asaba, Delta State, has been enmeshed in intra-union crisis as the Vice President of the union, has petitioned the Ministry of Labour and Employment, over alleged refusal of the union’s secretariat to allow him pick a form for the election, among other perceived infractions.

The Vice President, Adenyi Shabi, lamented that all efforts at collecting the form had been allegedly denied by the President-General and officials of the secretariat, complaining that he had written several letters to the acting General Secretary of the union on the issue to no avail.

According to him, he had on February 2 and 9, written to the secretariat to be availed of the form, since according to sections of the union’s constitution, he has the right to vote and be voted for, yet the leadership of the union continued to deny him his rights of getting  the form for personal reasons.

Reacting, acting General Secretary, Mr. Ibrahim Walama, said he had received the complaints and that the issue was being addressed and promised to get back to this reporter since Thursday last week.

However, at press time, he was not forthcoming on his response.

But in the petition to the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, dated February 9, the aggrieved vice president called on the ministry to call the leadership of the union to order and sanction it for alleged breaches of the union’s constitution.

The petition read in part: “Since the inception/inauguration of this current administration in 2012,  the various organs have not been allowed to function and even meet regularly as spelt out in the union’s constitution. In fact, meetings of members and union organs, for example, the Central Working Committee and National Executive Council are not held as at when due as union administration and decisions are based on the personal whims of the President General. This negates rule 9 (iv) which expressly stipulates “that the central working committee shall meet at least once a month……..” of the union constitution.

“It is on record that these organs do not  meet as at when due and yet decisions bordering on the welfare of members and staff are daily administered without consideration to due process and the provisions of the democratic rule and thus disenfranchising members and staff and effectively keeping them out of the decision process of the union.”
