GOVERNOR Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has set a trend by moving road development to the riverine areas of the state. Since he assumed office in 2015, residents of riverside communities have been grumbling over lack of presence. The governor, who spoke to reporters in Asaba, the state capital, knew about the complaints and said:

“One of the most important growths is that we are beginning to take road development to the riverine areas because in the past it was generally assumed that road construction in those areas was too expensive and it was difficult to take roads to those areas,”

He, however, noted: “We believe that it has been unfair to the people in those areas because we take oil from those lands and yet we cannot give them roads.”

His words: “One that is already being done is the road in Koko, we have awarded contracts for township roads in Burutu and Oghulagha, which is an 18.9 km road that we are doing. It is a road that was done by Shell 30 years ago and it is completely gone but we are doing a total reconstruction.”

“When I called the traditional ruler to ask what we could do for the people, he told me about the road and we had to respond. Contractors have been mobilized to site and work has commenced and it is our hope that meaningful work will be done and will be completed in time,” he said.
