Adekuoroye, Genesis, others shine as Bayelsa emerge overall winners

Odunayo Adekuoroye (55kg) of Ondo State was yesterday declared the overall best wrestler of the second Governor Seriake Dickson Wrestling Championships held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Mercy Genesis competing in the 48kg for Bayelsa won the best female wrestler of the tournament, Amas Daniel (65kg) clinched the best male freestyle wrestler, while Emmanuel Nworie in 71kg from Cross River State won the best Greco-Roman wrestler. The best female team of the tournament went to Bayelsa State, coming second was Ondo State and the Nigeria Army placed third.

Bayelsa State, however, emerged the overall winners of the championship with a total of 22 medals with Ondo State coming second with 13 medals. Delta State placed third with nine medals and Plateau State fourth with eight medals.

In Bayelsa’s medals haul of 13 gold, six silver and three bronze, the athletes that won gold medal for the host include Sele Ere Matthew (46kg), Mercy Genesis (48kg), Blessing Oborududu (63kg), Kemasuodei (69kg) in the females’ category.

In the male cadre, Richard Seitonkimo (54kg), Ebike Welson (57kg) Firstman Victor (61kg), Amas Daniel (65kg), Opukiri Agala (74kg), Melvin Bibo (86kg), Sinivie Boltic (125kg), Greco-Roman Perefaghe Kiribein (75kg), and Nathaniel Samuel (85kg) all did the state proud winning gold medal too.

Ondo got six gold medals through Ohida Aina (44kg), Bose Samuel (53kg), Adekuoroye Odunayo (55kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg), Makanjuola Bisola (60kg) and John Emmanuel (70kg) from female and male freestyle, while silver medals were won in male freestyle wrestlers by Ijalade Timilehin (54kg) Kolawole Fisayo (61kg), Saliu Rasheed (65kg) Jackson Oluwafemi (74kg), and female wrestler, Eke Rachael (63Kg) and two bronze medals won in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers by Segun Awolade (52kg) and Idowu Ladoja (125kg).

For the Deltans, their medals comprised two gold, two silver and five bronze medals and Plateau had two gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
