Mr Andem Bassey, the new National Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), has pledged to intensify the fight against quacks, saying they are responsible for collapsed buildings.

Bassey, who made this known in an interview on Monday in Abuja, acknowledged that engineering profession like any other had been infiltrated by quacks.

He lamented the spate of collapsed buildings recorded across the country but expressed optimism that the menace would soon be brought to an end.

“The Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers will join force with other sister divisions of engineering family to fight against quacks infiltrating the engineering practice.

“We are also going to form a new unit called the forensic unit. This is a special unit which will collate all the collapsed buildings for proper analysis and recommendations,’’ he said.

Bassey said that the unit would be responsible for investigating the immediate and remote causes of all collapsed buildings in the country.

He said that one of the challenges the institution was facing was the destruction of facts at collapsed building site by rescue workers.

“When there is a collapsed building before we get to the site, rescue workers have already destroyed some of the facts that could be used in analysis.

“But now, the forensic unit will take care of that,’’ Bassey said.

Bassey said that before now, findings of the committee set up to investigate the cause of collapsed buildings were not usually made public.

He said that now everything would change as those responsible for collapsed buildings would be exposed when the results of the findings were made published.

“We are going to commission our own people that will investigate and we publish the result of our findings.

“People will be embarrassed, taken to court and this thing will stop or be curtailed,’’ he said.

Bassey’s investiture as the15th National Chairman of the NICE was held on March 3 in Abuja.

He is also a member of Polish Society of Engineers, Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliation of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Engineers (NSE).

He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineer Technicians and Council for the Regulatory Engineering in Nigeria
