Lagos State Government has charged the newly licensed auctioneers in the state to imbibe the core values of transparency, accountability and discipline, as they are necessary for the sustenance of the public service sector.
Speaking during the issuance of the licence/certificates to members of the Certified Institute of Auctioneers, the Commissioner of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Rotimi Ogunleye, said the landmark project was timely and necessary, considering the importance and viability of auctioneers in the economy.
According to him, the platform was in line with the objectives of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to create a clean, secure and prosperous environment that would guarantee success and professionalism in all sectors.
“This administration has instituted platforms to enable professionals practice their trade and businesses without any interference or disturbance by quacks
“That is why we make sure it is only people that are qualified in accordance with the law that needs to operate in the sector.
“We want to make the environment conducive for positive contributors, people who can drive the economy, who have positive ideas and the proficiency to drive their various areas of operations and the auctioneers are one of these people,” he said.
He described the activities of quacks as a hindrance to the socio-cultural development of professions and the economy.
“In various professional undertakings as we have seen in our environment, the influx of people, who don’t have the proficiency and training have militated against the positive impact of those various professions and environments.
Congratulating the certified auctioneers, he charged them to carry the banner of the profession with integrity and accountability.
“Together, we shall move the practice to the level it deserves in line with what is obtained internationally. We have the material, human resources, and education.
We will be happy to always collaborate with you in the course of practising the profession. We are here as the regulatory body for the business, we will continue to make sure the environment is conducive, so that those who need the services of auctioneers will patronise the licenced and professional ones”, he added.
Appreciating the state government’s effort in providing an enabling environment to promote economic activities, Registrar of the Institute, Adeleke Hassan, noted that leveraging on auction would not only promote liquidity but also improve the contributions of the sector, boost employment, investment and socio-economic development in the country.
“Exploring auction as a property exit strategy for many abandoned buildings, vehicles and assets in the country would accelerate cash flow and boost investments.
“Property, vehicles and other luxury items that most people, even the government bought when the economy was booming have been abandoned. They have become a burden to them.
If you have a car that you have not used in two to three months, sell it and invest the money in something else.” he said.
Chairman of the Institute and Chief Executive Officer, United Auction House Limited, Mr. Jogun Onabanjo, reassured of standards and integrity in operations of the institute.
“Certified Institute of Auctioneers is a body of professional auctioneers. We will continue to provide professional qualifications of highest standards through our training courses and seminars, sharing of experiences, ideas and development of contacts between members nationally and other auctioneers’ institutes around the globe.
“We are ready, able and willing to contribute positively to the growth of the sector and economy, as well as develop to a stage that will bring huge volume of business that would compare favourably with other economies in the world,” he said..
