A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced to death by hanging one Azubuike Ogonor from Ahoada Local Council of the state, for killing his girlfriend, Miss Blessing Iyumame.

The trial judge, Justice Chioma Ada Okorie, said the convict, Ogonor, in his confessional statements made in police and prison cells, confessed to have committed the crime by pouring petrol on the victim and ignited it with matches, which burnt and, consequently, led to her death.

The court noted during trial that the convict and victim did not have issues of misunderstanding earlier that could have led to the attack, having spent the night together peacefully on the fateful day.

According to the court, Ogonor set Iyumame ablaze after he saw her in company of another man, fearing that his girlfriend might jilt him.

It was gathered that when the incident occurred in the convict’s room, it was a neighbour that came to the victim’s rescue and rushed her to a hospital in Ahoada, before Iyumame mother took her to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where she later passed on.

The judge, however, thanked the parties involved in the case for their patience till the end of the case, which lasted 12 years and four months.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the judgment, the prosecution counsel, Chijioke Boms, said the court has done justice to the case, advising that people should not take law into their hands no matter the provocation.

Also, counsel for the convict, N. S. Ibrahim, pleaded for leniency, while father of the deceased, Jonathan Iyumame, expressed happiness that at last, the law has taken its course.
