Owerri—The youths of Agbala community in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, yesterday, barricaded and locked down the entrance to the Anambra/Imo River Basin.

The youths led by their chairman, Mr. Jonathan Achoro, alleged that the management has reneged on their promises to give their youths job opportunities.

According to Achoro, “we decided to storm the office of the Anambra/Imo River Basin, when we got information that they were conducting a recruitment exercise. They never told us neither did they comply with the quota of what should be for the community as agreed.

“So we have come here to stop the recruitment exercise and to tell them that they cannot embark on this kind of exercise without carrying the youths of Agbala community along.

“We, therefore, demand our share. We want them to respect the agreement they entered with us.

“The youths of the community should either be given jobs or contracts. A long time ago, we compiled our list and forwarded to the management and uptill now, we have seen nothing.”

Contacted, the traditional ruler of Agbala community, Eze Malachy Onu,  confirmed  the protest  and called on the Federal Government to come to their assistance.

He said: “I am pleading with the Federal Government to intervene in this situation. The youths are not happy that the management of the Anambra/Imo River Basin has not recognised them in terms of what should be of benefit to them.

“They need to be given jobs. They are asking for a chance to participate in the activities as a way of encouraging them to be gainfully employed.”

At press time, officials of the Anambra/Imo River Basin, were not present to speak on the matter as they have all abandoned their offices for fear of being injured by the youths.
