EFCC slams 6-count charge against former NNPC boss, Yakubu (Read full details)

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  slammed a six-count charge on a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr Andrew Yakubu.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday slammed a six-count charge on a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mr Andrew Yakubu.

The charge was contained in court papers filed on March 9 at the Federal High Court Abuja.

According to the charge sheet, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Yakubu was accused of failing to make full disclosure in his Assests Declaration form of the sums of 9,772 800 dollars and 74,000 pounds contrary to Srction 27 (3)(a) of the EFCC act 2004.

He was also accused of receiving a cash payment of the said sums without going through a financial institution thereby committing an offence under the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011.

The former NNPC boss was further charged with receiving the same amount when he fully knew that the said fund formed part of proceed of unlawful activity.

This, according to the charge sheet, run counter to Section 7 (4) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006.

The EFCC had in February found about $9.8m and 74,000 pounds kept in a run down bungalow in Sabon Tasha a suburb of Kaduna, which it said was concealed by Yakubu.

A court in Kano later ordered the forfeiture of the money to the federal government following a motion filed by the anti-graft agency.

However, the former NNPC boss has filed a case in another court in Kano seeking the vacation of the earlier court’s order.

He claimed that the money was proceeds of various gifts given to him while he was working with the NNPC

‘World’s heaviest woman’ has surgery in India, loses 100 kgs…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2m1ZFfq

This handout photograph released by The Saifee Hospital on March 9, 2017, shows Egyptian patient Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty as she lies in a hospital bed at The Saifee Hospital in Mumbai on February 11, 2017, ahead of an operation. Indian doctors said March 9, 2017, that an Egyptian believed to be the world's heaviest woman had successfully undergone weight-loss surgery after losing over 100 kilogrammes (220 pounds). Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who previously weighed around 500 kgs, had not left her house in Egypt in over two decades until arriving in Mumbai last month for bariatric surgery.

Indian doctors said Thursday that an Egyptian who was believed to be the world’s heaviest woman had successfully undergone weight-loss surgery after losing over 100 kilograms (220 pounds).

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who previously weighed around 500 kilos, had not left her house in Egypt in over two decades until arriving in Mumbai last month for bariatric surgery.

“We are happy to inform all well-wishers that the medical team of Saifee Hospital has successfully performed the surgery on Eman Ahmed,” said a statement.

“Eman successfully underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on March 7th 2017 at Saifee Hospital. She had an uneventful surgery and anaesthesia course.

“She is now on oral fluids and accepting them well. The future course of action for the medical team working on her will be to correct all her associated medical problems, to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible,” it added.

A spokeswoman for Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, who is leading Abd El Aty’s treatment, said the 37-year-old Egyptian’s weight had been brought under 400 kilograms since she arrived in Mumbai in early February.

“Eman has lost over 100 kilograms and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support,” she told AFP.

The Egyptian, who is from the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, was flown to India’s commercial capital in a specially modified Airbus on Saturday 11 February for treatment.

Abd El Aty’s sister had approached Lakdawala, a specialist weight-loss surgeon, in October, saying her sibling needed urgent medical attention.

Her family told the doctor that as a child she was diagnosed with elephantiasis, a condition that causes the limbs and other body parts to swell, leaving her almost immobile.

Abd El Aty has suffered a stroke and faced a series of other serious ailments owing to her weight including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep deprivation.

Her request for an Indian visa was initially denied, but she was granted passage after tweeting a plea for help directly to India’s foreign minister, who intervened.

Abd El Aty had a long wait as no airlines were willing to fly her due to her health complications.

Bariatric surgery is a stomach-shrinking bypass procedure carried out on those wanting to lose excessive weight.

It is increasingly common in India, which has a growing problem with obesity, particularly in urban areas.

India is a major destination for medical tourists seeking quality services and no waiting lists at a fraction of the cost of western countries.

Sanchez dropped after disagreement with team mates…See full details

http://ift.tt/2mdiXS1

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s seemingly extraordinary decision to drop Alexis Sanchez before Saturday’s defeat at Liverpool was the result of a training ground row, British media reported Sunday.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Sanchez walked out of training and was involved in a bust-up with angry team-mates days before the match.

The confrontation could, the paper said, hasten his departure from Arsenal at the end of the season, with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus eager for his signature.

Sanchez has scored 17 goals in 26 league games so far this term but the Chile forward was left on the bench at Anfield — a move that failed miserably as Liverpool swept into a two-goal lead.

Wenger sent on Sanchez at half-time and the 28-year-old forward immediately played in Danny Welbeck to reduce the deficit.

It was too late to spark an Arsenal fightback, however, with the Gunners losing 3-1 as they crashed out of the top four following a third defeat in their last four league games.

Afterwards veteran French boss Wenger justified his decision as a tactical move, saying the “thinking was we had to go more direct”, although he did also accept his plan had backfired.

The Telegraph alleged that Sanchez walked off the training pitch mid-session which prompted his team-mates to confront him in the changing room, where there was a row about his attitude. The row caused Wenger to drop him, the newspaper said.

Pundits who were unaware of the reported background, criticised the under-pressure Wenger’s decision but the Telegraph said “many” Arsenal players backed the 67-year-old’s move in leaving Sanchez out of the starting XI.

Wenger did hint at motives other than tactics when, asked if the Sanchez decision had been “made for the team”, he said: “I will explain that later one time.”

Now the debate will turn to whether Sanchez starts at home to Bayern Munich in the second leg of a last 16 Champions League tie on Tuesday — a match where the Gunners have the seemingly impossible task of overturning a 5-1 deficit.

Wenger is almost certain to face further questions about Sanchez at Monday’s pre-match press conference. The Chilean scored Arsenal’s only goal in the first leg in Germany.

El-Rufai insists Audu Maikori will be prosecuted

http://ift.tt/2mlflOI

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai

Chocolate City co-founder Audu Maikori was recently arrested by the police over a series of tweets he sent to his followers alleging that students of the Kaduna State College of Education had been killed by Fulani Herdsmen in Southern Kaduna.

He is currently out on bail but Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, speaking at the on-going Social Media Week 2017 on Thursday, said the music mogul will face the full brunt of the law for publishing “fake stories and pictures”.

“We are going to prosecute him. He was arrested. His statement has been taken. He is on bail. He is going to be prosecuted. His fate will be decided by a judge,” El-Rufai said.

While insisting that he had no personal grouse against Audu, the governor noted that prosecuting him would serve as a deterrent to people who spread untrue information on social media.

He said, “It is not personal. I have nothing against him.In fact, he has worked with the state government in the past. But I’m not going to sit as the governor of Kaduna State and allow anyone to post or tweet anything that leads to lost of lives without consequences.”

Audu, El-Rufai said, was informed about the untrue nature of his posts but still doubled down on them.

“He posted fake pictures of Boko Haram attacks, Rwandan genocide as Southern Kaduna killings. It is totally irresponsible to do that.

“Even when it was pointed out to him that the information was untrue, he still posted that he stood by his story. He questioned the authenticity of the press statement. He was totally and completely irresponsible.

The music mogul and lawyer was arrested on February 17 by policemen attached to the inspector-general’s monitoring and intelligence team over ‘inciting comments’ he made on social media on Southern Kaduna killings.

In a series of tweets on January 23, he alleged that five students of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, Kafanchan, were murdered by Fulani herdsmen.

“My driver’s younger brother and five others students of college of education Gidan Waya were ambushed and killed by herdsmen yesterday #SouthernKaduna,” he said in one of the tweets.

But the school’s management denied that any of its students was killed. Kaduna State also condemned the misinformation and vowed to prosecute rumour peddlers.

Before his arrest, however, Maikori apologised for the wrong information contained in his tweets, claiming that he was misled by his driver, who himself was an indigene of Southern Kaduna. The driver, he said, was handed over to the police after he (Maikori) decided to further investigate the story to “ensure that all the facts of the case and evidence were presented to the authorities.”

“I hereby tender an unreserved and sincere apology to the Management of the College of Education, Gidan Waya, His Excellency the Governor of Kaduna State and the Kaduna State Government, and also to the people of Southern Kaduna and the Fulani community and also VANGUARD newspapers whose source was my driver for the false statement by my driver which I also publicized believing same to be true,” Maikori said in a statement on February 5.

“This action is made even more imperative because I understand that as a leader in my community, my statements are taken seriously and shapes the narrative. But nothing is more important in leadership than owning up to mistakes honestly and with integrity regardless of the repercussions or circumstances.”

Southern Kaduna, recently for a few weeks, was a scene of bloody conflicts between suspected Fulani herdsmen and indigenes of the area with scores of the residents killed. The conflicts forced the state government to impose a 24-hour curfew on Zangon Kataf which was only relaxed on February 4 to “6 pm and 6 am”.

Trump promises ‘renewal of the American spirit’…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2lbhoW6

WASHINGTON, DC – FEBRUARY 28: U.S. President Donald Trump addresses a joint session of the U.S. Congress as Vice President Mike Pence (L) and House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R) (R-WI) look on on February 28, 2017 in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. President Donald Trump pledged a “renewal of the American spirit” Tuesday, as he tempered his most inflammatory rhetoric while fleshing out his nationalist agenda during a landmark speech to Congress.

Transposing hardline campaign promises into a presidential key, Trump offered the most restrained and detailed explanation yet of his America-first world view.

He criticized threats against Jewish community centers and condemned the seemingly racially-motivated killing of an Indian immigrant, answering calls for him to speak out.

And although the 70-year-old president again promised a hard line on illegal immigration, he couched those policies in economic rather than xenophobic terms, winning sustained applause from the Republican dominated Congress.

“By finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed, save billions and billions of dollars, and make our communities safer for everyone,” he said.

Putting some policy meat on the bones, he proposed introducing an Australian-style merit-based system to reduce the flow of unskilled workers — and held out the prospect of a bipartisan compromise with Democrats on root-and-branch immigration reform.

Trump arrived to deliver his maiden address before a chamber filled with lawmakers, Supreme Court Justices, ambassadors and generals, facing historically low approval ratings and embroiled in multiple crises.

Hailing what he called a “new national pride” sweeping the country, he sought to use the pomp of the occasion and the presidential pulpit to reclaim authority and course correct after 40 difficult days.

Discussing trade, Trump even enlisted the help of American icon Abraham Lincoln, echoing what the first Republican president described as “protective policy.”

“Lincoln was right — and it is time we heeded his words,” Trump said. “I am not going to let America and its great companies and workers, be taken advantage of anymore.”

Looking abroad, Trump softened his criticism of NATO partners and vowed to work with allies in the Muslim world.

But he offered no apologies for emphasizing a world order centered on the nation state.

“My job is not to represent the world. My job is to represent the United States of America,” he said.

“But we know that America is better off, when there is less conflict — not more,” he said, promising to “find new friends, and to forge new partnerships, where shared interests align.”

– ‘Far less dark’ –
In Trump’s longest speech to date as president he remained largely on message, reading his planned address almost verbatim.

Some women Democratic lawmakers had dressed in white for the occasion, a nod to the suffragette movement and an echo of the substantial opposition the president’s policies face.

But Trump struck a compassionate tone at times, embracing family-friendly policies like paid parental leave, and even won cautious praise from Democrats for his attempt at a more optimistic vision for America and his call for unity.

“This was far less dark than the inaugural speech. And he has made an attempt to reach out,” said Democrat John Larson of Connecticut. “But the devil is in the details.”

According to a CNN instant poll, 57 percent of Americans who tuned in saying they had a very positive reaction to the speech.

Pressing his domestic agenda — and pleasing mainstream Republicans who reluctantly embraced him — Trump promised to provide “massive” tax relief for the American middle class and to repeal his predecessor’s landmark Obamacare health reform.

“When you get into a job and you do it for a while you become better at it, and I think he’s improving every single day,” said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

– Balancing act –
The billionaire’s populist economic message was crucial in his November victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton — helping him sway voters in crucial Rust Belt states Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Now his challenge is translating that into tangible policy steps and legislative achievements.

He outlined plans for rebuilding America’s creaking infrastructure and for high-stakes tax and healthcare reform.

But on all three issues, Trump faces a difficult balancing act with fellow Republicans, who control both the Senate and House of Representatives.

To succeed, Trump — the consummate political outsider — may have to embrace Washington deal-making.

Conservatives are desperate to pull Obamacare out by its roots, but party pragmatists are wary of dismantling a system that helped some 20 million Americans obtain health insurance.

Tensions between the executive branch and the Republican-led Congress are also simmering over Trump’s 2018 budget proposal.

Trump wants to hike defense spending by $54 billion, offsetting with cuts in foreign assistance and other non-military spending.

On all these issues Trump offered little detail about how to meet his promises worsening the country’s nearly $20 trillion national debt.

“This plan doesn’t add up. A third-grade math student can see that you’re going to blow a huge hole in the deficit if you do the things the president is talking about,” Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen told AFP.

Japan killjoys wage war on Valentine’s ‘conspiracy’…Read full details

As Japan prepares to celebrate Valentine’s Day, a cranky group of marxist protesters have called for an end to public displays of love, claiming it hurts their feelings.

Members of ‘Kakuhido’, or the Revolutionary Alliance of Men that Women find Unattractive, unfurled a giant “Smash Valentine’s Day” banner as the party-poopers set off to try and overthrow the annual celebration of romance.

The grumpy comrades elicited curious looks from passers-by in the trendy Shibuya district where they rallied against commercialism and chanted other buzz-kill slogans such as “public smooching is terrorism!”

“Our aim is to crush this love capitalism,” the group’s public relations chief Takayuki Akimoto told AFP.

“People like us who don’t seek value in love are being oppressed by society,” he added. “It’s a conspiracy by people who think unattractive guys are inferior, or losers — like cuddling in public, it makes us feel bad. It’s unforgivable.”

Previously, the killjoy group has also protested against “housewives who control Japan’s future” as their hapless husbands work all hours at the office.

Valentine’s Day in Japan is a huge money-spinner for the confectionery business as women are traditionally expected to buy chocolates for the men in their lives — from lovers to work colleagues.

Men reciprocate a month later on White Day, a Japanese marketing brainwave dreamt up by confectioners in the 1980s to keep the cash tills ringing.

“The tradition of giving chocolates means you’re always competing,” said Akimoto, 33, blasting what his group calls the “passion-based capitalism” of Valentine’s Day.

“You’re judged by how many sweets you get. It’s a business strategy by the chocolate capitalists, it’s ridiculous.”

Valentine’s Day originated as an ancient Christian and Roman tradition and Akimoto fumed: “Religious overtones have been twisted and turned into a vehicle to make money.”

Japan is experiencing a loss of mojo with couples apparently too stressed or busy to have sex, frustrating government efforts to raise the birthrate as policymakers struggle to cope with a shrinking population.

Akimoto claims the group’s message has begun to hit home after 10 years of protests.

“Recently you hear of more people spending Christmas alone or women growing tired of Valentine’s Day,” he said. “We believe that through our fight, we’ve helped contribute to that social shift.”

Kakuhido was founded in 2006 by Katsuhiro Furusawa, who began reading the Communist Manifesto after being dumped by his girlfriend and came to the conclusion that being unpopular with the opposite sex was a class issue, fuelling his anti-Valentine message.

Akimoto offered some advice for would-be disciples of the spoil-sport group, which also protests White Day and Christmas.

“We’re saying you don’t have to enjoy Christmas or Valentine’s Day,” he said joylessly, adding that Kakuhido is also taking aim at Halloween.

“Just spend the day doing normal things. Our enemy is formidable, but we are ready for a long, drawn-out war.”

Liverpool losers must accept attacks, says Klopp…See full details

http://ift.tt/2laZyid

Jurgen Klopp said faltering Liverpool must take the blame for their performances after a 2-0 defeat at lowly Hull added to their miserable run.

The German boss said the Reds have got to turn words into actions after failing to win any of their five league games this year — the first time that has happened since 1954.

Klopp said there has got to be an immediate change to reach the “big, big target” of the Champions League.

Liverpool’s only victory in the last 10 matches in all competitions came in an FA Cup replay at fourth tier Plymouth.

More damning, Saturday’s loss at Hull means the relegation-threatened hosts joined a list that features Burnley, Swansea and Bournemouth among clubs to have inflicted league defeats on Liverpool this season.

In contrast, Liverpool have the best record in the Premier League when playing sides currently in the top six.

“We have to take all the criticism from everywhere,” said Klopp when asked if he thought there was a flaw in his team’s attitude.

“I don’t think there is. I don’t want to give an answer now, but from outside, I can understand why you ask that if we have that record we have against those teams and another record against other teams.

“I know the boys, I see them every day and I don’t see this during the week but I understand how you could see it like this from outside.

“We expect more from ourselves and we have to show more than we did today and it’s my responsibility to make it possible for the players to show more than we showed today.

“We didn’t show the right mood. I don’t know if it was attitude, but all football performances are a mixture of everything – confidence, attitude, passion, a lot of things.

“But the only answer we can give is on the pitch, I can’t give you an answer here, now.”

– Big target –

Liverpool have long since abandoned hopes of catching runaway leaders Chelsea at the top of the Premier League but, on current form, even a top-four finish and place in next season’s Champions League looks beyond them.

“The title is not my biggest problem,” Klopp said. “I want to play much better football with my team.

“But it’s not about talking about where we want to be. We have to show it. We have shown it a few times this season but obviously it is a long time since we showed it consistently.

“That’s what we have to change immediately. The Champions League is an outstanding, big, big target.

“So many teams want to play there but to qualify for the Champions League from England is difficult. But on performances like today, we don’t have to talk about this.”

Two Senegalese players signed on loan during the January transfer window – Villarreal forward Alfred N’Diaye and Oumar Niasse from Liverpool’s rivals Everton – scored the goals late in each half.

The victory continued the remarkable improvement shown by Hull under new manager Marco Silva who, in addition to drawing at Manchester United in the league in midweek, has now won all four of his home league and cup games.

“Of course it is a very good result and gives us confidence – it shows this is the right way,” Silva said.

“The players believe in our way and how we work because if they don’t it is impossible.

“When I came the atmosphere was maybe not the best, the team was in last position in table. In the first match I didn’t see our fans in our stadium and today I did – it was a fantastic atmosphere.

“If all the people believe it is possible we can change. It’s important we play and work as a team.”

PDP not broke, says party’s media chief (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2k1b5lT

PDP Secretariat, Abuja

The Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under has denied an allegation that the party was financially broke and could not meet up with it financial obligations.

The National Publicity of the party, Mr Dayo Adeyeye made the denial in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Adeyeye said that the attention of PDP leadership was drawn to a publication alleging that the party was broke .

He said that it was also alleged the the party could not pay rents and meet other financial obligations of its research and training institute, the Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI).

He said that the entire allegation in the publication was an outright falsehood and only existed in the imagination of the writers and their collaborators.

“The PDP is not broke and does not owe rent on the property being used by the PDI located in Wuse II, Abuja.

“Let us place on record that the PDI’s financial responsibilities are being met accordingly.

“Just last week, the Caretaker Committee approved monthly imprest for the Institute, and its staff salaries are paid at the same time with that of the PDP staffers.

“For emphasis, all members of staff of the Party and that of the Institute received their January 2017 Salary last week which the Secretary of the Staff Welfare Committee confirmed in that Publication.”

He alleged that the report was part of distraction from Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, the factional chairman, and his co-travellers.

Adeyeye disclosed that Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff had sometime in 2016 proposed a visit to the Institute, but was promptly turned down by the Director-General of the Institute, Dr. Lanre Adebayo.

He added that Sheriff also in December 2016 proposed a meeting with members of the establishment staff of PDP but was turned down by the staff.

Adeyeye described as shameful and unnecessary show of desperation by Sheriff in his resort to blackmail and outright falsehood to tarnish PDP reputation and the National Caretaker Committee.

“The National Caretaker Committee of the Party, though with limited time in office, has been working tirelessly to meet all the monetary obligations of the Party since its inauguration.
