JAMB begins sale of 2017 UTME forms March 20 (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2mAZPfn

The sale of the admission forms begin March 20, while UTME is scheduled to hold in May.

The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) says it will begin the sale of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forms on March 20.

Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Public Relations made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Bwari.

Benjamin said the date was fixed following an agreement that was reached on the harmonization of the examination timetable at a meeting with other exam bodies on Jan. 24. “We will begin the sale of the admission forms on March 20, while UTME is scheduled to hold in May.

“We are ready to commence the sales of the 2017/2018 admission forms for UTME and Direct Entry forms on the said date,’’ he said. NAN reports that JAMB recently emphasized that it would organise an optional mock examination before the 2017 UTME.

Based on information published on its Twitter handle @JAMBHQ, the date of the Mock examination will soon be announced. According to the board, the purpose of the mock examination is to allow candidates “FEEL’’ what the main examination will be like.

The board, however, said the mock examination would be “completely optional’’ as it would not be a pre-requirement for writing the actual UTME. It added that candidates can choose to either take the mock examination or not.

The board also disclosed that Interswitch Payment on the e-Facility portal has been temporarily disabled and that the list of its accredited centres soon be announced.

Ndoma-Egba urges Niger Delta to embrace dialogue (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2lcIlUB

The Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba.

The Chairman, Governing Board of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, has urged the people of the Niger Delta region to embrace the Federal Government’s option of dialogue and consultation.

Mrs Clara Braide, the Special Assistant, Communication Office of the Chairman Governing Board of NDDC, said this in a statement she issued and made a copy available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

Braide quoted Ndoma-Egba as describing steps taken by the Presidency to meet with key leaders and stakeholders in the region, ”highly commendable and remarkable.”

He noted that the steps were part of efforts to bring about lasting peace to the region.

“The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, following the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently on vacation, has in recent weeks been on a tour of major communities in the region,” the chairman said.

According to him, the aim of the Osinbajo’s tour is to have direct interface with the people of the region.

“The ongoing tour of the region is a further demonstration of the commitment of the Federal Government toward the development of the region.”

He maintained that Buhari’s government meant well for the people of region, stressing, however, that only the entrenchment of peace, could guarantee overall development of the region.

According to Ndoma-Egba, destruction of oil facilities and other government-owned assets within the region will not solve the problem, but aggravate the monumental infrastructural and environmental challenges facing the region.

He further said that NDDC and all other stakeholders were very appreciative of the move by the Presidency.

The chairman noted that the development of region would serve as a push for the new board and management of the interventionist agencies to be up and doing in the discharge of their duties.

The NDDC chairman expressed optimism that the time for change and solution to the various problems facing the region had come.

He, however, stressed the need for the people of the region to give the present administration all necessary supports to encourage it to continue transforming the region.

5 dead, 30 injured in bomb attack in Lahore

Pakistani soldiers and policemen cordon off the site of a bomb attack in Lahore on February 23, 2017. At least five people were killed and 30 injured after a blast ripped through a building in an upscale shopping area of Pakistan’s Lahore Thursday, officials said, the latest in a surge in Islamist violence.

“It was a bomb attack,” Nayab Haider, a spokesman for the provincial Punjab police said. Rescue services spokeswoman Deeba Shehnaz provided the casualty toll.

Television footage showed a smouldering building and several crumpled cars with their windows blown out.

The explosion took place in the particularly affluent Defence Housing Authority suburb of the city, replete with upscale boutiques and cafes as well as an academy for the international hair salon Toni & Guy.

It came a day after the military announced the launch of a nationwide anti-terrorist operation in the wake of a series of bloody assaults that have killed more than 130 people in the past two weeks.

They included a previous bomb blast in Lahore on February 13 which killed 14 people, and a devastating suicide attack at a Sufi shrine in Sindh province that left 90 devotees dead.

The attacks, which were claimed by the Islamic State group and the Pakistani Taliban, dented growing optimism over the country’s security after it appeared to be making strong gains in its decade-and-a-half long war on militancy.

The emergence of IS and a Taliban resurgence would be a major blow to Pakistan. Analysts have said the apparently coordinated nature of the attacks suggested militants were regrouping.

Pakistan has accused neighbouring Afghanistan of harbouring the militants who have carried out the attacks. Kabul and Islamabad routinely accuse one another of giving militants safe haven.

“The enemy is taking advantage of the turmoil in Afghanistan to launch terrorist attacks on Pakistan’s soil,” a foreign office spokesman told reporters at a regular press briefing Thursday as he condemned the attacks.

Islamabad launched a crackdown in the wake of the attacks, saying it has killed dozens of “terrorists” in recent days and carried out airstrikes on militant hideouts along the Afghan border before announcing the fresh military operation Wednesday.

Analysts said the military was seeking to limit militants’ movements from one place to another by carrying out a nationwide operation.

“This operation will basically target sanctuaries… of militants in Punjab province and restrict their movements,” defence analyst and retired general Talat Masood told AFP.

Pakistan had vowed to hold the final of its hugely popular Pakistan Super League in Lahore next month despite the surge in violence, part of an effort to bring international cricket back to the country, promising “head of state level” security for foreign players taking part.

The city, capital of Punjab province and Pakistan’s second largest metropolis, was also the scene of an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team bus in 2009. Pakistan has not hosted high-level visiting teams since then.

Man City will learn from Monaco thriller, says Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said the experience of Tuesday’s exhilarating 5-3 Champions League victory over Monaco would stand his side in good stead in the competition.

City are in control of the last-16 tie ahead of the return leg on March 15, but at several moments during the first leg their European destiny appeared to be hanging by a thread.

Guardiola’s side went ahead, fell 2-1 and then 3-2 down, but finally rallied with three goals in the last 19 minutes from Sergio Aguero, who scored a brace, John Stones and Leroy Sane.

“A lot of things happened, but in the moment we were lucky. We were stable mentally,” Guardiola told BT Sport at the Etihad Stadium.

“The old and young guys in the team played amazing. To live this experience helps us a lot in the future.

“Monaco has more history than us in the competition and you need this kind of experience to learn and improve.

“Of course anything can happen in Monaco and we have to score goals. We think in attack: attack, attack, attack.”

He added: “The result is OK. It could be better, could be worse, but it is what it is.”

Radamel Falcao scored twice for Monaco, in addition to a goal by 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe, but saw a second-half penalty saved by City goalkeeper Willy Caballero with the visitors 2-1 up.

“The first thing I say is today is one of the most exciting games in the Champions League this year,” said Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim.

“For the supporters it’s very good. I think everyone stayed happy, watching the two teams.

“There was lots of attacking quality, eight goals. I think today Monaco played a great game. I’ve congratulated the players. But there were little defensive errors.

“The key moment of the game was the chance to go 3-1 up that we missed. Then our opponents made it 2-2.”
