Malaysia says ready for ‘five-year’ stake-out at North Korea embassy…Read full details

Malaysia will wait to question suspects in the Kim Jong-Nam killing believed to be holed up in Kuala Lumpur’s North Korean embassy “even if it takes five years”, the country’s police chief said Tuesday.

A police cordon was set up outside the embassy after Pyongyang announced it would ban Malaysians from leaving North Korea, prompting an immediate tit-for-tat move from Kuala Lumpur.

The travel bans are just the latest twist in a heated diplomatic row over the Cold War-style assassination of the half-brother of North Korea’s leader in Malaysia last month, which has seen Kuala Lumpur expel Pyongyang’s envoy and vice-versa.

“We will wait, if it takes five years, we will wait outside. Definitely somebody will come out,” police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said at a press conference in Penang, adding that he believed three people wanted in connection with the murder were in the building.

“This morning the deputy prime minister issued instructions not to allow any North Korean embassy staff to leave the country,” Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed told journalists outside the embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

“At the moment we’re trying to ascertain their numbers and their movements.”

Prime Minister Najib Razak later said all North Korean citizens in Malaysia, not just embassy staff, would be barred from leaving the country.

Police set up a barricade with cars blocking both ends of the street leading to the North Korean embassy shortly after noon, an AFP journalist said.

Around a dozen armed officers wearing bulletproof vests were stationed at each end of the road.

They rolled out yellow ticker-tape reading “do not cross” and initially denied a request from an embassy official to remove the barricade so a car could leave the compound.

Shortly afterwards the tape was removed and two cars were allowed to leave. The police presence was scaled down but officers remained patrolling the road and were seen recording movements out of the embassy in a ledger.

Around 100 journalists and photographers were also gathered outside.

The embassy, a two-storey neo-colonial house with a North Korean flag fluttering, is situated in Kuala Lumpur’s well-heeled Bukit Damansara district, known for its hipster cafes and restaurants.

The nascent stand-off has already been compared to the Julian Assange case, which has seen the founder of the secret-spilling Wikileaks website holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012.

Two women — from Indonesia and Vietnam — have been charged with the killing, but Malaysian police have also named several North Korean suspects, including the embassy’s second secretary and an employee of North Korea’s national airline.

Police arrest 4 suspects over illegal revenue collection (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2lXnZjE

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested four suspected illegal revenue collectors, who specialised in extortion and terrorising members of the public by disguising as environmental officers in Enugu.

This was disclosed in a statement by the command’s spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, on Friday in Enugu.

Amaraizu noted that the suspects were nabbed on Feb. 15 at Upper Chime Avenue axis of Enugu metropolis.

He said that the operatives of the New Haven Division of the command, through intelligence information, caught the suspects red handed.

“The suspects, who gave their names, are helping police operatives of the state’s Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID) in their investigations.

“The suspects are regretting their nefarious activities.

“They maintained that they are not Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) officials but once worked in the agency before they were laid off and that they needed to get life going as they faced economic hard time,’’ he said.

Amaraizu said that two fake ESWAMA identity cards, two ESWAMA emblems and suspected receipts with ESWAMA inscriptions were recovered from the suspects.

Queen Elizabeth to unveil Britain’s new cyber security centre

Queen Elizabeth II will inaugurate Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre on Tuesday, spearheading the country’s efforts to combat a growing wave of cyber attacks notably from Russia.

The 90-year-old monach is due to formally open the London hub alongside her husband Prince Philip, 95, and a host of government ministers including finance minister Phillip Hammond.

“The cyber attacks we are seeing are increasing in their frequency, their severity, and their sophistication,” Hammond is expected to say, according to extracts of the speech released in advance.

“In the first three months of its existence the NCSC has already mobilised to respond to attacks on 188 occasions.”

The centre is one element of a £1.9 billion ($2.38 billion, 2.24 billion euros) government strategy unveiled in November to tackle cyber threats.

As part of its bid to tighten security, the government is opening 100 posts at the new hub to be filled by private sector employees on secondment from their permanent jobs.

Part of Britain’s communications spying agency, GCHQ, the London hub is aimed at implementing preventative measures such as better securing state websites and email accounts.

Staff are also preparing for a major “category 1” cyber attack, which is expected to happen sooner or later, CEO Ciaran Martin said in a Sunday Times interview.

The centre chief accused Moscow of targeting political institutions and parliamentary organisations in incidents “well evidenced by our international partners”.

“Over the last two years there has been a step change in Russian aggression in cyber-space,” he told the newspaper.

Martin’s comments come after US intelligence agencies accused Moscow of interfering in the country’s November elections, which prompted the outgoing administration to impose sanctions on Russian agencies.

Cyber attacks on government departments seek information on policy, including energy and diplomacy, while state-sponsored attacks on companies can be aimed at stealing intellectual property, Martin told the Sunday Times.

India arrests Nigerian Okonkwo with ingested cocaine

http://ift.tt/2kVZgfm

Monday Tony Okonkwo

India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has recovered 1.3 kilograms of fine quality Colombian cocaine stashed in 90 capsules from the stomach of a Nigerian , who had come to Delhi from Lome, Togo.

According to The Times of India, the accused was taken to hospital where an X-ray confirmed the presence of foreign bodies in his stomach. He was kept in the hospital for two days during which he expelled 90 capsules containing 1.3kg cocaine.

The Nigerian was identified as Monday Tony Okonkwo. He arrived IGI airport in an Ethiopian Airlines plane on February 6.

“When we conducted a thorough search of his body and baggage, he denied having any drugs or banned substance with him. However, the NCB team got suspicious when he said that he had come to India regarding his business of wigs and hair, but was found travelling on a tourist visa,” said Rajender Pal Singh, deputy director general, NCB.

Tony was taken to Safdarjung hospital where an X-ray confirmed the presence of foreign bodies in his stomach. During interrogation, the man revealed that he had ingested the drug capsules at a guesthouse in Lagos.

“The accused said he took around three hours to ingest the capsules and then took a flight to Lome. He then travelled to Addis Ababa from where he boarded a flight to New Delhi. His passport has corroborated the claims,” Singh said.

Monday Tony Okonkwo was supposed to deliver the drugs to another distributor who would have contacted him once his Indian number was active. “We are on the lookout for his handlers based in India and Nigeria,” Singh added.

NCB believes the cartel is being run by a group based in Peru or Bolivia and is the same one that had employed a Brazilian woman earlier to carry the contraband in swallowed packs.

The consignments were first taken to Sao Paolo, Brazil and then distributed throughout west African countries through carriers. The drug was brought to India via Ethiopia or Abu Dhabi.

Colombia’s Santos asks Trump to support peace process

President Juan Manuel Santos spoke with US President Donald Trump on the phone Saturday and asked him to support Colombia’s peace plan with FARC rebels, the Latin American leader said on Twitter.

Santos, in a series of posts, described their conversation as “productive.” “@POTUS expressed his support for peace and desire to maintain the best relations with Colombia,” Santos said, referring to Trump by his Twitter handle.

He said he asked Trump to support approval of the Colombia peace plan in the US Congress.

“(Trump) said he was very interested and would take charge of it personally,” said Santos, who added that Trump extended an invitation for him to visit the White House.

The call lasted about 25 minutes, Santos’s office said.

The United States has pledged $450 million to support implementation of the peace agreement signed in November between Bogota and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), bringing an end to a 52-year conflict.

Santos won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in negotiating an end to the conflict that grew out of a crushed uprising over land rights in the 1960s.

It killed more than 260,000 people and left 60,000 missing, according to authorities. As of early Sunday, the White House Press Office had yet to release a read-out of the call.

Libya rescues 120 migrants off Tripoli coast…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2kc6w5p

More than 120 migrants including women and children were rescued by Libyan coastguards Sunday off the coast of Tripoli after their boat ran into trouble.

The migrants set off Friday from Sabratha — a town 70 kilometres (45 miles) west of Libya’s capital that has become a staging ground for traffickers — but their boat’s engine failed, a coastguard official said.

An AFP photographer at the scene of the rescue said the vessel was intercepted by a coastguard patrol boat around 20 nautical miles northeast of Tripoli.

The official said those on board were of various African nationalities and included 10 women and five children, including a baby.

Libya said on Saturday it had intercepted more than 400 migrants bound for Europe in recent days.

The announcement followed a meeting of European Union leaders in Malta where they agreed moves to curb mass migration from Libya.

The plan includes funding and training Libya’s coastguard to make it better able to intercept migrant boats and helping neighbouring countries to close routes into Libya, according to a draft statement seen by AFP.

Lawlessness in Libya since a 2011 uprising that ousted longtime strongman Moamer Kadhafi has allowed smuggling networks to develop a lucrative trafficking trade.

Italy’s coastguard said Thursday that more than 1,750 migrants had been rescued in the Mediterranean within 24 hours.

Around 230 people have died en route to Europe since the start of 2017, according to the United Nations.

Gold becomes investors’ favourite safe haven with Trump uncertainty

http://ift.tt/2jUdR9K

Some of Wall Street’s largest fund managers have taken a contrarian bet on gold, wagering that U.S. President Donald Trump’s governing style and upcoming elections in Europe will combine to
create more stock market volatility and boost the prices of a metal long seen as a safe haven.

Fund managers from IVA, Ridgeworth and Fidelity are among those who are bullish on gold at a time when the VIX, Wall Street’s main measure of volatility is near two-year lows amid a stock-market-rally that has pushed the P 500 up 6.5 per cent since Election Day in November.

Charles de Vaulx, portfolio manager of the eight billion dollars IVA Worldwide Fund, said the U.S. stock market had been “amazingly unvolatile.”

“With the unpredictability of President Trump and how well he works with Congress, there remains a
lot that is unknown,” he added.

De Vaulx said Trump was short on specifics of his spending plans which could undercut the value of
the dollar and push gold prices higher.

At the same time, upcoming elections in France and Germany could have a long-term impact on the
future of the European Union, leading to more stock market volatility.

The dollar was on course to its worst start in more than a decade on Tuesday after Trump
commented on currency devaluation by other countries and his new National Trade Council
director remarked on the euro.

Spot gold prices rose 1.6 per cent to 214.19 dollars an ounce with analysts citing the uncertainty of
Trump’s policies as a main factor..

In spite of the recent moves, gold has been one of the worst-performing assets since Trump’s
election.

Gold prices are down 5.5 per cent since the election and have fallen 10.5 per cent over the last
six months.

The new administration has been widely expected to enact new policies that would boost the dollar and
US economic growth, cutting into the appeal of the metal.
