Catfish consumption is safe, says association

http://ift.tt/2lnapW5

Catfish

Mr Tayo Akingbolagun, former President, Catfish Farmers’ Association of Nigeria, says consumption of catfish is safe and healthy to the human body.
He allayed the fears in some quarters that catfish was harmful to the body, and described it as handwork of some mischief makers.

Akingbolagun dispelled the rumour in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin on Sunday

According to Akingbolagun, some unpatriotic Nigerians had sponsored publications to say that catfish contained bad cholesterol and was not fit for human consumption.

“For their information, the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America recently confirmed that cholesterol is a non issue in human health.

“America produces channel catfish, while China produces her own specie of catfish and these are consumed by their citizens.

“We therefore cannot understand the reason why some unpatriotic Nigerians decide to destroy their own product,” he said.

According to him, the association will soon make public research findings by renowned nutritionists to confirm that catfish is safe and healthy for human consumption.

Akingbolagun, however, appealed to the Federal Government to reconsider the implementation of the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme, adding that it would ensure increased production of catfish.

“The scheme encouraged new farmers and was a good catalyst for the aquaculture sub-sector. It should not be allowed to die prematurely,” he pleaded.

The Biography Of Jua Cali [Age, Life Profile & Net Worth]

http://ift.tt/2kLnsnR

p

Paul Julius Nunda (born September 12, 1979), better known by his stage name Jua Cali, is a Kenyan hip hop artist. In 2000, together with record producer Clemo, he founded Calif Records where he has been ever since. Jua Cali performs in Swahili and Sheng in a popular Kenyan style of rapping called genge.

Jua Cali was born in Eastlands, Nairobi. His parents, Doreen Onditi and Evans Onditi (deceased) were both schoolteachers. He grew up with a strict Catholic upbringing in California Estate to the east of Nairobi city. He began rapping at age 10, encouraged by his elder brother Christopher Sati. He was known as an introverted teenager who was often quiet, hardly ever socialising.

He attended Ainsworth Primary School (Standards 1 to 6); Shepherds Junior Buruburu (Standards 6 to 8); Jamuhuri High School and eventually Kenya Christian Industrial Training Institute (K.C.I.T.I) Eastleigh where he received a diploma in Information technology. There, he played basketball with ambitions to make it to the Kenyan National Basketball Team. He never made it in the team, blaming this on his height. His earlier foray into music included singing in a band called’ Sita Futi’. Sita Futi disbanded almost as soon as it was started leaving behind Jua Cali and his close friend Jemmoh. The departing group members left to pursue careers outside music. Calif Records came into being after Jua Cali teamed up with childhood friend Clemo to form the record label that quickly became a hit factory, gaining prominence in the East Africa music scene with chart topping artists and music. Calif Records also invented the Genge genre of Kenyan hip hop. Jua Cali often cites his brother, Chris, and his parents as his greatest influences in life.he is also related to dell xerxes as his brother in law.

His first recorded track was Ruka, released in 2001 and was followed by Nipe Asali in 2002. In 2004 He collaborated with Pilipili in track “Kamata Dame”. Like most Kenyan artists, it took several years before his first full album was released. His album “Juacali Sekta” reached the stores in 2006, containing mostly previously released singles.

His single Kwaheri (featuring Sainapei Tande-winner cocacola pop star and radio presenter) was a major hit in Kenya in 2007. At the New Year’s Eve 2008/2009 he released a new album, Ngeli ya Genge. He has toured the US and other countries. In August 2007, he was among 100 most influential Kenyans as selected by The Standard newspaper.

His stage name Jua Cali, is derived from California, an estate in Nairobi (as is the name of Calif Records). It also resembles Jua Kali, a Swahili term meaning fierce sun, which has been taken to refer to Kenya’s informal sector of the economy.

He has released a series of new songs with a new producer Keggah based in the United States. His new songs include, Karibu Nairobi and Kuna Sheng which have both received massive airplay and good reviews.

The artiste has also been involved in other major advertisements such as Protex bath soap and Pilsner beer, and the deals have raked in big cash. He’s also the Bloodlink Foundation Kenya ambassador. Bloodlink Foundation Kenya is a non-profit charitable trust established in Kenya seeking to assist Kenyan people achieve better health and improved quality of life through partnership with communities, corporate organisations and public sectors.

Ecuador in vote that could push country to the right

http://ift.tt/2m09dZt

Members of the anti-explosive squadron check the headquarters of the Alianza Pais party after a bomb threat on February 18, 2017 on the eve of the country's presidential election. Ecuador's February 19 general elections will decide who succeeds leftist President Rafael Correa after a decade in power.<br />Rodrigo BUENDIA / AFP

Ecuador votes Sunday in a general election that could see a pillar of the Latin American left swing to the right, putting in question the legacy of outgoing President Rafael Correa.

“What is at stake are two visions of society, two visions of development, two visions of the state,” said Correa, 53, a leftist economist who oversaw an economic boom in the oil-rich country of 16 million over his decade in power.

He is not up for re-election, and voters must decide whether to continue his Socialist agenda by electing Lenin Moreno, or to follow Argentina, Brazil and Peru in switching to a conservative government.

Moreno, a Correa ally who leads in opinion polls, promises to continue the outgoing leader’s tax-and-spend social policies.

“The Ecuadoran people have affection (for us) and are determined to continue with this process,” the 63-year-old told AFP on Wednesday at a campaign event.

But in an uncertain contest, Moreno faces a challenge from conservative ex-banker Guillermo Lasso, 61, second in the opinion polls.

He has vowed to cut spending and taxes, lure foreign investment and create a million jobs, while also slamming Correa’s allies over alleged links to a corruption scandal.

“We have to vote for change to fight against corruption,” Lasso said at a campaign rally on Wednesday.

The third-placed candidate is conservative former lawmaker Cynthia Viteri, 51.

– Boom, bust –

Ecuador’s economy shrank by 1.7 percent last year, suffering notably from falling oil prices.

Correa is accused of failing to save any petrodollars for a rainy day, and of hampering business with high taxes and duties.

“When Correa came to power he promised to diversify the production model,” Alberto Acosta-Burneo, an economist at the Spurrier Group consultancy, told AFP.

“But he is leaving behind a country in which it is very difficult to produce things.”

Opinion polls indicate Moreno will likely win Sunday’s first-round vote.

But if his lead is not big enough, he will face a runoff on April 2 against a conservative rival, most likely Lasso.

Polls show a high ratio of undecided voters.

“Any party could beat the governing one in the second round, because there is major resistance to and rejection of the government,” said political scientist Paolo Moncagatta of Quito’s San Francisco University.

But Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank in Washington cautioned: “It is a mistake to underestimate the strength of support for Correa’s side.”

Voters will also elect a new parliament.

Polling stations will open from 1200 GMT to 2200 GMT. Results are expected from about 0100 GMT Monday.

– Impact on Assange? –

Another issue that hinges on the outcome of the election is the fate of fugitive WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been living in the country’s London embassy for nearly five years.

Moreno favors continuing to grant the Australian whistleblower asylum, given to him under Correa.

But Lasso and Viteri both told AFP they would end Assange’s asylum if they win.

Under Correa, Ecuador grabbed world headlines when it defied the United States by granting Assange refuge as he fights against Swedish rape allegations.

The move has also shielded him from arrest over possible extradition to the United States for leaking diplomatic cables.

WikiLeaks has said Assange could travel to the United States to face investigation if his rights were “guaranteed”.

Correa says Latin America needs a strong leftist movement to resist US President Donald Trump’s hard line on immigration and trade.

But both Lasso and Viteri have shown more willingness to work with Washington since Trump’s election victory in November.

Eight die in Benue boat mishap

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

BY PETER DURU, MAKURDI

At least 11 persons reportedly lost their lives yesterday when a boat they were traveling in capsized at Kaambe crossing point at Gbajimba in Guma local government area of Benue State.

Guma is the home town of Governor Samuel Ortom.

The Sole Administrator of the council, Mr. Anthony Shawon who made this known in Makurdi, said the boat which was conveying the victims who were mourners was overloaded when the incident happened.

He attributed the cause of the mishap to heavy wind, adding that most of the victims who were heavily drunk at the time of the accident refused to heed advise of the boat paddlers that the passengers be ferried in batches.

According to the Sole Administrator, the unfortunate incident sparked angry reaction from youths of the area who went on rampage making bonfire and further resorted to attacks on some persons.

“They protested that the incident had a superstitious connotation. They ended up stoning three elders to death in addition to the eight that drowned and went further to burn down their houses.

“The irate youths also attacked the district head of Gbajimba, Gwatse Akaahena who had the windscreen of his car smashed.

“I tried to calm them down, but they went wild going after every elder in the area. I, then saw another group of Indian hemp smokers with matchete parading the area.

“I reported the incident to soldiers and mobile police officers who swiftly intervened and restored security to the area though no arrests have been made so far.” Shawon said. When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Moses Yamu confirmed the incident, noting that there was mob action in Gbajimba but added that normalcy had since been restored in the area while investigation into the matter had commenced.

Secret Service probes object thrown at Trump motorcade

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The US Secret Service launched an investigation Friday, after an object was hurled at Donald Trump’s motorcade as it traveled to his Florida resort.

As Trump’s motorcade was moving from the airport at West Palm Beach to his Mar-a-Lago home earlier Friday, an object appears to have been thrown at the convoy.

“The Secret Service can confirm that an object appears to have been thrown at the motorcade this afternoon,” an official said in a statement.

“We are investigating at this time and don’t have anything further.”

Trump’s motorcade travel is often greeted by well-wishers and hecklers.

In Palm Beach, Trump has received a mostly positive welcome, with fans lining the route with signs saying “Welcome Home.”

Onitsha Fire Outbreak: Gov. Ugwuanyi takes proactive measures

Trump heads to Florida to reconnect with his base

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

President Donald Trump will bask in the adulation of supporters on Saturday as he holds a campaign-style rally in Florida, reconnecting with his base outside Washington after a stormy first month in office.

“Looking forward to the Florida rally tomorrow. Big crowd expected!” the Republican leader tweeted Friday evening.

Following a grievance-filled press conference that raised questions about his temperament, the real estate mogul is getting back to basics and back on script.

On Friday, he visited a Boeing plant in South Carolina and pitched himself as a champion of US jobs and industry.

“As your president, I’m going to do everything I can to unleash the power of the American spirit and to put our great people back to work,” Trump said.

“This is our mantra, ‘buy American and hire American.’ We want products made in America, made by American hands,” he said, pledging to wean the country off imports.

On the campaign trail, Trump tapped a rich seam of unease among American workers.

Although the unemployment rate is at a low five percent and wages are rising steadily, a triple whammy of deindustrialization, globalization and automation has battered the US heartland.

Trump repeatedly touted his business acumen and promised to transfer boardroom smarts to the Oval Office in order to bring back jobs.

But poor management and scandal have plagued his first month in office.

In four tumultuous weeks, Trump has seen his national security advisor ousted, a cabinet nominee withdraw, a centerpiece immigration policy fail in the courts and a tidal wave of damaging leaks.

The perception of a White House in disarray was further fueled as Trump’s pick to replace national security advisor Michael Flynn turned down the job, leaving a glaring hole in the National Security Council.

Trump said Friday he was considering new candidates.

The president was spending his third consecutive weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and on Saturday he heads north to Melbourne, near Orlando, for a rally at 5 pm (2200 GMT).

The event will likely be reminiscent of his campaign trail appearances, with his cheering supporters providing a boost to Trump after he was frozen out by significant portions of the Washington establishment.

Trump was already on the offensive Friday evening. A day after a rambling press conference in which he blamed journalists for his administration’s troubles, Trump tweeted that “FAKE NEWS media” was the “enemy of the American People,” naming several prominent outlets.

– Back to business –

The commander-in-chief appeared to be in his element at Boeing, praising the roll-out of the 787-10, touring the cockpit and joking with CEO Dennis Muilenburg about negotiations for an order of F-18 Super Hornets.

“We are looking seriously at a big order, and we will see how that — you know, the problem is that Dennis is a very, very tough negotiator. But I think we may get there,” he said.

The US manufacturer employs some 7,500 people in South Carolina, where it has invested more than $2 billion since beginning operations in the southeastern state in 2009.

Trump’s prescription to drain the pockets of economic malaise that dot the country has been to rip up “bad trade deals” and impose tougher tariffs on imports.

“It has to be much easier to manufacture in our country and much harder to leave. I don’t want companies leaving our country. Making their product, selling it back, no tax, no nothing, firing everybody in our country,” he said.

That may be a winning approach politically, but few economists believe it would be good for Americans’ pocket books.

Richard Baldwin, a professor of international economics at the Graduate Institute, Geneva recently accused Trump’s team of pursuing “20th-century solutions for America’s 21st-century industrial problems.”

“In 2017, US workers are not competing with low-wage foreign labor, capital, and technology, as they did in the 1970s. Rather, they are competing with a nearly unbeatable combination of low-wage foreign labor and US knowhow,” he said.

Ironically, the Boeing Dreamliner may be a case in point.

From nose to tail fin, many of the Boeing’s components are made around the world: Wing tips in South Korea, the landing gear in England.

“If the Trump administration imposes tariffs, it will turn the US into a high-cost island for industrial inputs,” said Baldwin.

“Firms might be induced to move some production back to the US, if it is strictly aimed at US consumers. But they will be equally encouraged to offshore production that is aimed at export markets.”

One million sign petition to cancel Trump’s UK state visit

A petition demanding Britain cancel a planned state visit by US President Donald Trump passed one million signatures on Monday, following outrage over his travel ban on mainly Muslim countries.

“Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US government, but he should not be invited to make an official state visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen,” the petition on parliament’s website says.

“Donald Trump’s well-documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales.”

Parliamentary petitions can be signed by anyone with a British postcode and those doing so are asked if they are a UK resident or citizen. Such petitions must be considered by lawmakers if they attract more than 100,000 signatures.

Last January parliament debated banning Trump from Britain following a petition signed by nearly 600,000 people, after the then White House candidate promised to drastically restrict US entry to people from Muslim countries if he became president.

Trump on Friday signed an executive order suspending the arrival of all refugees for at least 120 days, Syrian refugees indefinitely — and barring citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days.

Interpreting the ‘Change’ we voted for

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

THE  world had barely settled down to the reality of Brexit when Donald Trump trounced Hillary Clinton to clinch victory in an election that would eventually shame the power of opinion polls. Trump purportedly played a fast one on unsuspecting Americans and the world was left to grapple with ‘Trump Trauma’. A few weeks after, Fidel Castro was done with the wildness  of this  world and  the  world, with the exception  of  those who felt threatened by his Marxist-Leninist  disposition, mourned the passing of a great humanist.

Along the line,  Yahya  Jammeh  happened to our democratic psyche and that tragically revived memories of sit-tightism that  has all  along  been the bane of our Africanness. Elsewhere in Europe, Italy stunned the world with a referendum which, though looked and sounded marginal in shape and size,  has, in all the important ways, changed the face of global politics. And, uninterested in being uncounted, Nigeria continues to grapple with recession even as economic  juggernauts catwalk excuses!

Indeed,  the  global village is in a mess  and all eyes can see it! Nations are waging wars against nations!  Sicknesses and diseases are defying medical prescriptions! Conflicts, endless droughts, hunger and deprivations are separating us from our journey and it is as if signs of the end times  are already staring us  in the face.

With a special attention  on Nigeria, that   dear country is experiencing a siege revolution is no longer news! Willingly  or by happenstance, the  town is tough while the glory of the gown is tormented.  In addition to the global uncertainty  which has  shaken Nigeria to her foundational relevance, politics, not policy, threatens  her existence and it is as if godly minds have eloped with their prudent counsels. Like a steeringless vehicle, inflation has gone to an  unbearable  level  and it is as if those witches and wizards of the military-era Nigeria are back at work! To make matters worse, Africa’s foremost giant, and world’s 10th biggest oil reserves, now  joys  in  having more than 60 per cent of her people living on less than $1 a day. In 2016, unemployment  rose from 12.1 per cent in the first quarter to 13.3 per cent in the second quarter.  Only  God  knows  where  it  now  stands!

Truth be told, events of the last few months have again compelled  bewildered  Nigerians to debate  the particular nature of the ‘Change’ they voted for! Of considerable worry is their  inability to discern whether or not the events of March 28, 2015 were destined to take Nigeria to her Promised Land or Muhammadu  Buhari was merely ordained to act Nigeria’s Moses. For crying out loud, why has a bag of rice, which sold for N7,500.00 in December 2015, now  gone beyond double and how come less than 500 people are sitting on not less than 20% of Nigeria’s 2017 budget, all in the name of constituency and other meaningless projects? Widening the scope of our worries, why has Cuba, in spite of her travails, become  a socio-economic success while Nigeria, despite  its  touted  giantness,  continues to look Northwards, not inwards, for succour? All said, will Nigeria get out of this miasma unbowed  and where  lies the road to comfort?

An Igbo proverb says: “you don’t need a mirror to see what you are wearing on your hand”.  Agreed! The times are quite unusual. But Nigerians  must have to work together for their teeth to  chew the meat! Bola Tinubu struck the right chord when he urged the government to  “re-engineer the economy bottom up, diversify the economic base, strengthen our industrial base, modernise infrastructure, enhance agriculture, and provide employment and of course, ease of doing business.”  It is interesting to note that Buhari has been there before. Therefore, that  he knows what to do to navigate the country out of the  economic  turbulence is not in doubt. But he has to act fast and the earlier he does this, the better for the ruling party and this fractured microcosm.

Assuming without conceding that government at the centre is currently  moving  beyond sharing our pains to making genuine efforts at restoring Nigeria’s political and economic credibility,  keying  into  Osun State’s  ‘government unusual’  which has made the business of governing and growing the state an exciting experience will not be out of place. With its  adoption of  some of the state’s  initiatives like the School Feeding,  Elderly Welfare and Youth Empowerment  schemes, Nigerians will agree with me that  the  Federal  Government  is  on the right track. But, more still need to be done, especially, in the area of massive infrastructure development,  if  it must timeously deliver on the promised  dividends of democracy to the citizenry. The  president  must  come to terms, not only with the details and the intricacies of ‘cash’ in the people’s “pockets and food in their belly” but also the basics of the “promises of a brighter future.”  After all,  a naked man does not put his hands in his pocket.

Platitudes aside, for any country in the world to develop, the socio-economic benefits of good road network can never be overemphasised. Apart from getting people, markets, services and knowledge connected, it is also advantageous in the economic growth of the society.

Osun, under Rauf  Aregbesola,  has demonstrated the impactful interaction between the state’s economic development and the sufficiency and quality of its road network. Therefore, it’s  time Buhari  rose to the task of tapping from this wonderful experience that has turned Osun  State into ‘a permanent construction site’.

Again, this is where those who are accusing the governor of wasting resources  on the construction of an airport  have also missed it. As a matter of fact, there is a lot of benefits derivable  from an  initiative  as laudable as this. Among them  are speed, reliability, rapid delivery of medical supplies as well as efficiency in connection of markets across states, countries and continents. Statistics  revealed  that  not  less  than   35% of world trade by value are transported by air.  In  2013  alone,  about  49.3% million tones of freight were handled by air.

As we know, Osun State is adjoined  by not less than five other states: Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, Akure and Kwara. At a time like this when the state  is  putting  its  trust  in  diversification, a cargo airport will in no small way  add to its income generation capacity. In like manner, Nigeria can truly serve as Africa’s hub for “distant markets and global supply chains in a speedy and reliable manner” if only those  in positions  of  authority   can look in the direction of upgrading facilities at  our airports with  a  view  to  serving  the original purposes for which they were established.  But for paucity of funds, the story of MKO Abiola Airport in Ido Osun would have been pleasantly different. All the same, Aregbesola has demonstrated that it can work and Buhari will do well by borrowing a leaf from this worthy venture.

And, to those who delight in accusing Aregbesola of engaging in ‘capital flight’, it may interest them  to know  how Dubai got to where it  is as well as the contributions of Jews and people of colour to the development of the United States of America. Added  to this  will be some  tutorials  on  the indices for measuring growth. In my considered opinion,  Buhari will be doing progressive governance a lot of good by learning  some useful tips,  along this line,  from Osun  State.

Education, Agriculture and Security are some other  important  areas where I  am optimistic  the Federal Government can effectively partner  Osun State in order to meaningfully impact the lives of Nigerians and I hope to  address them in  subsequent interventions.

Well, this is not to say that hypocrites and  pathological naysayers  whose portion is in attitudes that bring failure will not attack the president for taking a bold step like the aforementioned. Unfortunately, that’s  their  professional  calling  and  there’s nothing one can do to cure their mischief.  Beyond their disjointed preachments, they see politics as a game of death  even as they represent all the bad things that poverty can give.   Shepherdless in the journey of life, they once accused Bisi  Akande of mismanaging Osun State but, not unexpectedly, the stone that the builders rejected have eventually become the cornerstone.  And, in their eager, sometimes feverishly paranoid attempt to interpret the times, they fail to understand that Osun is an integral part of the project called Nigeria; and that both are constituents  of the global village. So, whatever ails the eye is not unlikely to ail the nose!

Warren Buffet made a strong statement when he remarked that no one gets credit for predicting rain but for building the ark. In other words, how  Buhari  goes about fulfilling his election promises to Nigerians will go a long way in determining how posterity will remember him.

May principalities and powers, assigned to rubbish our leaders’ efforts, scatter!

Mr. Abiodun Komolafe, a commentator on national issues, wrote from Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State.
