BREAKING: Syrian fighter plane goes missing near Turkey

http://ift.tt/2mEzhNl

p

A Syrian fighter jet has gone missing during a reconnaissance mission close to the border with Turkey.

On Saturday evening, the Syrian army announced that it had lost contact with one of its reconnaissance planes, adding that search parties are currently trying to locate its pilot, who is thought to have ejected.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has confirmed that a Syrian MiG-23 warplane crashed in the town of Samandag in Turkey’s border province of Hatay.

He added that the reasons behind the plane’s crash was still not clear but “it may be due to weather conditions.”

The governor of Hatay, Erdal Ata, said that rescue teams had found the plane’s cockpit empty when they arrived at the scene.

The Ahrar al-Sham Takfiri militant group, which is active in the region, claims to have downed the plane.

For nearly six years, Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy. The UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated in August last year that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the crisis until then. The world body stopped its official casualty count in the war-torn country, citing its inability to verify the figures it received from various sources.

FG set to raise bond for federal roads rehabilitated by states

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Dennis Agbo
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, says the Federal Government would raise bond to refund billions of naira  states spent rehabilitating federal roads in their domains.

He spoke in Enugu, yesterday, during a courtesy call on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who appealed to the Federal Government to refund over N25 billion the Enugu State government spent on federal roads across the state.

The governor, who was represented on the occasion at the Government House, Enugu by his deputy, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, told the minister that in the face of the dilapidating federal roads infrastructure in the South-East region, the people continued to suffer untold hardship.

Fashola, in Enugu to inspect some federal roads, stated that the Federal Government had  assessed  claims by state governments and had concluded arrangements to refund the money through bond.

The minister shed more light on the Enugu government intervention on federal roads. He said: “We have also been briefed about your intervention on certain roads that are our roads and I and your Commissioner have discussed about the outstanding claim from the Federal Government, and my message from the Federal Government is that we have completed the assessment of all these claims and the total amounts owed the states far exceed the total amounts as to the whole country.

“The plan of the Federal Government is to issue bond to pay those money and then we pay the bond back overtime.”

He urged Enugu State government to assist the contractors working on federal roads in the state to secure the right of way, informing that they had been re-mobilized to site.

Economy: Nothing like recession, Nigeria has been going through hell forever – Yinka Davies

Dike Chukwumerije’s ‘Made in Nigeria’ set for Abuja again

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Leading performance poet,  Dike Chuwkumerije is set to excite Abuja audiences with another enactment of his critically acclaimed “Made In Nigeria” poetry theatre production.
“Made in Nigeria is a fusion of different art forms into one performance,” Dike said while speaking to journalists ahead of the show which opens on February 11 at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. The show which is an artfully woven collection of 20 poems capturing 103 years of Nigerian history in 120 minutes was first performed in Abuja in September 2016 and then in Lagos at the MUSON Centre in December of the same year.
“We are bringing to life, the history of Nigeria from the Amalgamation to the current day using poetry, dance and drama. Part of our aims is to re-awaken national consciousness as well as to bring intellectualism into poetry.
“Performance poetry is giving poetry a new lease of life and is steadily succeeding in breaking the stereotype with regards to what poetry is about. So far, we can see clear success because with each outing, we are recording even larger audience numbers,” he added.
More than a chronicle, Made in Nigeria is a collection of human stories. Two lovers caught in the political crisis of the mid ’60s, a couple in the ‘70s facing their parents’ aversion to inter-tribal relationships, a soldier’s wife anxious for her husband, a mother guiding her son through recession, two teenagers finding love on a beach in the ‘90s. Weaving these stories together, MADE IN NIGERIA re-creates the rich tapestry of Nigeria’s socio-cultural and political life. And does it all in sublime Poetry.
