Buhari has not disappointed me, says Obasanjo

http://ift.tt/2mrIMvV

President Muhammadu Buhari left Welcoming Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to his office at the State House Abuja Yesterday from Philip ojisua 7th April 2016 From Philip Ojisua

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says that the current Nigerian leader, Muhammadu Buhari, has not disappointed him since he assumed office in 2015. Obasanjo stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta.

While reflecting on the Buhari administration since 2015, Obasanjo said that the president had done his best to move the country forward. “Whatever anybody says, President Buhari has not disappointed me from what I know of him,’’ he said.

He said the president had delivered on his core areas of strength and ability, particularly in the anti-corruption crusade and the war against insurgency.

“In my book, I have said that Buhari is not strong on the economy and I did not write this to run him down.

“I also used to think that he is not strong in the area of foreign affairs, but I have realised that he has improved very well. “He has actually done his best in the areas where we know him to be strong,” he said.

The elder statesman urged Nigerians not to relent in their support for Buhari and not to give up on Nigeria. “Whatever you might see as bad in Nigeria, other societies have gone through the same at some period in their history.

“It is not for us to begin to condemn but to begin to join hands together and consider how we can make the best out of our present. ”Our present situation is a passing phase and we need to be resilient to ensure that we are not consumed by it.

“I will be the first to admit that we have not been where we should have been, but note that we have also been far from where we could have been because it could have been worse.

“It is the height of ingratitude for people to say Nigeria has not achieved anything or much as a nation. “The generation before mine fought for Nigeria’s independence, that is great.

“My own generation, which is the next, fought to sustain the unity of Nigeria. “Since 1999, Nigeria had enjoyed 18 years of unbroken democracy.

“We witnessed in 2007 a transition of power from one individual to another in the same party. “We witnessed in 2015 a transition of power from an individual in the ruling party to another individual in the opposition party.

“All these should not be taken for granted,” he said. Obasanjo also decried the call for national conferences or assemblies to negotiate the continued unity of Nigeria.

The former president who, described such conferences as distractions, said he did not bother to read the report of the last one organised by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

” We Nigerians need ourselves and if anyone thinks he does not need another person, good luck to him. “What I see in all those groups trying to break away is that they want more of the national cake.

“The fact that you want more of the cake means that it is good and you like it, else you will not be asking for more of it.

“I do understand the agitations of the youths in that the increased facilities that now exist as against our own time have not translated to adequate opportunities for them.

“But I think that rather than engage in violence, they should think of how to build on the sacrifices of the generations before them,” he said.

The elder statesman, who would turn 80 on March 5, said he had no regrets at such an age. He said that his hope that Nigeria would still be a great nation was still intact.

Rebel missile kills senior Yemeni general in Red Sea port

http://ift.tt/2luGo7F

p

A ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Shiite rebels on Wednesday killed the deputy chief of staff of the country’s military in a major blow to the U.S.-backed Saudi-led coalition, which heavily supports the government, officials said.

The SABA news agency, which is controlled by the Houthi rebels, said their forces struck the vehicle of Brig. Gen. Ahmed Seif al-Yafie in the Red Sea port of Mokha.

Yemeni military officials said the missile hit a gathering point for the military commanders. A total of seven officers were killed, including al-Yafie, and 25 were wounded, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Yemeni Prime Minister Ahmed Abdu Dagher expressed condolences on Twitter after the attack, saying the “end of the enemy is near.”

Al-Yafie was loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which has been battling the Houthis and their allies since 2015. A Saudi-led coalition launched an air and ground campaign in support of the government that year, but the rebels are still in control of the capital, Sanaa, and much of northern Yemen.

Mokha, a strategic Red Sea port, witnessed intense fighting between Houthis and allied forces loyal to the ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and the Saudi-led coalition and pro-government forces, mostly southern fighters.

Tens of thousands of people were recently displaced from the fighting along the western coastline.

On Tuesday, Jamie McGoldrick, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Yemen warned of an escalation in the fighting along Yemen’s western coast, “at a great cost to civilians.”

He said over 17 million people are “unable to adequately feed themselves and are frequently forced to skip meals — women and girls eat the least and last.”

“Seven million do not know where their next meal will come from and are ever closer to starvation,” McGoldrick said.

The conflict in Yemen has pushed the Arab world’s poorest nation to the edge of famine and international humanitarian organizations have been pleading for cessation of hostilities to help deliver basic needs to those displaced or besieged by warring parties.

Did Kangana Lose A Film With Shah Rukh Khan Due To Her Statement On Koffee With Karan 5?…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2lHvTQQ

Earlier this year, reports were doing the rounds that Kangana Ranaut has been signed opposite Shah Rukh Khan for a period drama being helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. While that cast and pairing combined with Bhansali’s magnificence is enough to excite any hardcore Bollywood fan – things seem to be looking bad as of now.

Recently, Kangana was on Koffee With Karan 5 where she was asked which Khan she would like to work with next – and she replied saying none of them. Kangana had her reasons though, as she does not want to be over shadowed by any Khan’s star power. According to DNA, Mr. Bhansali decided not to cast Kangana opposite SRK in his film, post this statement.

Reports also suggest that the director had approached King Khan with 2 scripts, and SRK seemed to have liked the script which doesn’t include Kangana.

http://ift.tt/2kUzHtI

Suhail Nayyar, who was last seen in Udta Punjab won hearts and critics’ appreciation for the brilliant portrayal of Jassi, is all set to help put India on the map because he has just signed his first international project. Sahil  has been roped in for Hotel Mumbai, a film based on the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, and will be directed by notable director Anthony Maras.

The film covers global issues of our time and tells the stories of victims and survivors of the attacks in 2008. Here’s what Nayyar has to say about his international debut.

When I was told that I had been finalised for the film… I pinched myself a couple of times to be sure that it was happening. It is a dream project for me… brilliant script, amazing director, impeccable actors and a great crew. It is a very important film for the message it purely stands for – humanity. I feel truly blessed that God has given me this opportunity.

How sweet. Congratulations Suhail! Looking forward to this.

“Full Credit To Natasha For Sticking By Me” – Varun Dhawan Finally Confirms His Relationship…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2kUAISz

Varun Dhawan, Natasha Dalal
Varun Dhawan is one of the most good-looking actors in Bollywood currently and is a hot favourite with all the girls. Unfortunately for them, this dishy actor is taken. Varun has been in the news for his relationship with his childhood sweetheart Natasha Dalal for years now. While Varun has never denied his relationship with her, he has always refrained from directly talking about it. The two were spotted at Shahid Kapoor’s birthday bash and were also clicked together on Valentine’s Day.

In a new and interesting turn of events, Varun finally spoke with abandon about his relationship and being seen in public with Natasha in an interview with India.com.

I am cool about it. In fact, I’ve always been cool about it. There’s nothing to hide. I just don’t want the focus to shift from my career to the relationship. That’s why I don’t talk much about it. What can one say about spending time with loved ones? I’m not denying anything at all, just that I don’t like to discuss it.

When asked about where he sees the relationship going, here’s what he said.

I see it reaching a good place. (Smiles) She’s quite a handful so full credit to her for sticking by me. She’s one of the best people I’ve come across in my life.

Awww, finally! 😀 Remember when Varun spoke about how he’s in a phase where he wants to get married and have children, in an episode of Koffee With Karan? Do you think the time is finally arriving? Either way, we’re just glad he’s finally talking about it! 🙂

Chalayan brings Greece, glitter explosion to London

http://ift.tt/2m7K3au

Models present creations by British designer Hussein Chalayan during his catwalk show on the second day of the Autumn/Winter 2017 London Fashion Week in London on February 18, 2017<br />NIKLAS HALLE'N / AFP

Hussein Chalayan returned to the London catwalk on Saturday for the first time in 16 years, with relaxed but structured tailoring inspired by Greek folk culture — and an explosion of glitter.

The Cyprus-born British designer is known for his minimalist, elegant and sculptural creations, which have been worn by Bjork and featured in exhibitions and theatre productions around the world.

Models took to the stage at Sadler’s Wells theatre to showcase his latest collection, featuring shirts with built-in waistcoats, and carrot-shaped trousers with wrap belts in wool blend knitted felts.

For the finale, they ripped off geometric print panels on the front of their dresses — helpfully labelled “Pull To Open” — to unleash a spurt of glittery foil streamers onto the ground.

“It was a combination of a protest and a celebration — I wanted these very tacky things coming out, that I found very beautiful,” Chalayan told reporters backstage.

“That’s what life is, that you can have that duality — the protest element, but also the purity.”

Elsewhere, there were cashmere black dresses cut to look as if they were falling off the shoulders, bold black and white prints and delicate tops embroidered with hand-drawn Greek figures.

Chalayan, whose parents were Turkish Cypriots, started his career in London, where he was twice named Designer of the Year.

But like many of his peers, flew the nest for the commercial opportunities of Paris.

“We felt we were making this very big effort, but a lot of people weren’t coming. When we moved to Paris our business grew considerably,” he said.

Returning to London this season to join British names such as Burberry, Mulberry, Christopher Kane and J.W. Anderson, has delighted his British fans.

But will he stay? “I don’t know yet. Let’s see.”

West Ham rebel Payet to sign for Marseille

http://ift.tt/2igMavl

Dimitri Payet’s stand-off with West Ham appears to be close to a resolution with reports Sunday the France international was poised to sign for Marseille.

Premier League side West Ham and Marseille have reached a deal whereby the wantaway 29-year-old moves to his former Ligue 1 employers in a 30 million euros (£25 million) transfer until 2021, L’Equipe said.

Payet is due in Marseille Sunday for a medical and will be officially presented at the Velodrome on Monday, according to RMC.

This brings to an end a month long saga with Payet refusing to play for West Ham with his teammates barring him from team bonding sessions and dinners.

This month after Hammers manager Slaven Bilic revealed Payet wouldn’t play for the team a steward had to guard the photograph of him outside the Hammers stadium.

Payet — who has been sent to train with the Under-23 squad — joined West Ham from Marseille for £10 million ($12 million) in 2015 and signed a £125,000 per-week five-year contract last February.

West Ham are believed to have turned down offers for Payet — who had a sensational first season, scoring 12 goals and supplying 12 assists — of £19 million and another one of £20 million.

Payet’s arrival represents a coup for Marseille’s new American owner Frank McCourt, representing a record signing for the south coast side.

Payet joins Patrice Evra, the veteran French defender who arrived at Marseille last week on a free transfer from Juventus.

Merkel says Trump immigration ban ‘not justified’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday slammed the restrictions on immigration imposed by US President Donald Trump, saying it was “not justified” to target people based on their background or religion.

“The chancellor regrets the entry ban imposed by the US government against refugees and nationals from certain countries,” her spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement.

“She is convinced that even in the necessarily resolute battle against terrorism it is not justified to place people from a certain origin or belief under general suspicion.”

The German government “will now examine the consequences” of the ban for German citizens with dual nationality affected by the decision, he added.

Trump has caused consternation at home and abroad after signing a sweeping executive order on Friday suspending refugee arrivals and barring visas for travellers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for the next three months.

A federal judge on Saturday blocked part of the ban, ordering authorities to stop deporting refugees and other travellers stuck at US airports.

Merkel’s condemnation comes a day after she spoke by phone with the new US president, when they discussed a range of issues from relations with Russia to the situation in the Middle East and NATO.

Statements released by both sides after the call made no mention of the immigration ban, but Seibert on Sunday said Merkel had reminded the US billionaire of his human rights responsibilities.

“The Geneva Refugee Convention calls on the international community to take in war refugees on humanitarian grounds,” he said.

“The chancellor stressed this policy in yesterday’s phone call with the US president.”

– ‘Catastrophic mistake’ –

In an interview with European media earlier this month, Trump said Merkel had made a “catastrophic mistake” in allowing a record number of migrants into Germany.

More than a million people, including hundreds of thousands from war-torn Syria, have arrived in Germany since the chancellor opened the country’s doors to those fleeing conflict and persecution in 2015.

Although the number of arrivals has slowed significantly in recent months, the influx has deeply divided Germans and fuelled a surge in support for the rightwing, anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Even within Merkel’s own conservative CDU/CSU bloc, the policy has been controversial.

One of the fiercest critics in her own ranks, the head of the CDU’s Bavarian sister party CSU, Horst Seehofer, on Sunday praised Trump for sticking to his campaign pledges.

“He is implementing his campaign promises one by one with consistency and speed,” Seehofer told Germany’s bestselling Bild am Sonntag newspaper, while adding that he did not agree with all of the US leader’s decisions.
