Mothering week: Women’s Guild fellowship with female inmates

AS part of activities marking the annual mothering week of Women’s Guild of Yaba Presbyterian Church, the group on Thursday donated relief materials to the female wing of the Kirikiri Prison’s in Lagos.

Members of the Women’s Guild did not hide their motherly tears and sympathy for the female inmates as they prayed and asked for God’s intervention and mercy for the inmates.

Leading the prayer session, the president of the group, Mrs. Ogbonne Olua counselled the inmates to be hopeful, stressing that despite the circumstances they have found themselves, their dreams oould still be realised, adding that God is not blind nor deaf to their plight.

Mrs. Olua urged the Kirikiri inmates to be prayerful and obedient to authorities. “Be obedient, do not be hostile, we know how you feel being here but learn to be obedient to the authorities who watch over you. Hold on to God, He alone can do what no man can do and I know He will not forsake you nor leave you,” she said.

In her message, the group’s prayer coordinator, Mrs. Ngozi Okoroafor assured the inmates that God feels their pains and challenges and He will show them mercy notwithstanding the duration of their confinement in the prison. “God will send help to you, change your name and He is able to change your situation and meet all your challenges,” she said

Addressing journalists after the tour, Olua said: “We feel it is necessary that we visit the female inmates to show them love that despite their incanceration, God still love them. We have been to the prison severally and we know that some of them have babies hence we decided to go with baby needs ranging from milk, pampers, clothing materials for mothers and babies, food stuff among others.”

Chairman of the League Management Company, Shehu Dikko has showered encomiums on Star lager beer, official partners of the Nigeria Professional Football League for their consistency and commitment to the development of the local league.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, when Rivers United hosted Rangers in an NPFL match, where Star entertained thousand of football fans with fun competitions and refreshments, The premium fan experience also included a live performance by one of Nigeria’s finest artistes Reekado Banks.

Dikko said, “From the league season’s finale, in Enugu, last year it was obvious that Star came prepared and I’m not surprised with the premium fans’ experience at the stadium today.

“We are very pleased to see terms of the partnership come to fruition, as our efforts to restore the passion around local football are proving successful.”

An energetic match between Rivers United and Enugu Rangers saw the home team triumph over their visiting opponents by a lone goal.

It was the first time a music performance debuted at the Star fan park. Star Lager Beer has, since 2016, after its partnership announcement with the NPFL, continued to empower the Nigerian football community with sustained involvement of fans and their interest in the matches within the Nigerian league.

Speaking on plans by Star Lager Beer for the NPFL in 2017, Portfolio Manager, National Premium, Nigerian Breweries, Tokunbo Adodo, stated that, “This match in Port Harcourt was our first match support in 2017 and we intend to take the fun experience to consumers in different matches across Nigeria.”

Five killed in Ondo robbery attack

A gang of armed robbers yesterday afternoon attacked Skye Bank in Ogbagi Akoko, Akoko North West Local Council of Ondo State, killing five people during the raid.

According to an eyewitness, the armed bandits, who invaded the bank situated at Uko around noon, gained entrance into the bank by using explosives to blow up the security door of the bank to access the room housing the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

He said the armed men shot sporadically into the air to scare away people while two of the bank security men were killed during the attack. He further explained that the armed men, numbering about 20 positioned, themselves at different locations within the bank, shooting at intervals to scare away security operatives in the town.

The source disclosed that three other people were killed in the bank while the hoodlums carted away a yet to be ascertained amount of money from the bank during operation that lasted for about 45 minutes.

He, however, said the casualty would have been more if the town’s main market was opened, revealing that the robbers escaped through routes leading to Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

While confirming the attack, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, described it as unfortunate, but said only three people lost their lives in the attack, including a police officer.

He explained that the armed men numbering 15 arrived at the bank on motorcycles and went straight to blow off the ATM machine and the entrance door to gain assess into the bank.

The PPRO noted that his men have commenced investigation into the robbery and were on the trail of the hoodlums with a pledge to bring them to book.

He, therefore, called on member of the public with useful information on how to track the armed men to help the state command of the police in arresting the armed robbers.

To equip its civil servants with the right skills to communication the importance of hygiene and healthy living, Lagos State Government has trained about 100 civil servants on strategic communication for a clean Lagos. Speaking at the opening session of a two-day workshop on, Strategic Communication for a clean Lagos, Ambode represented by the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr Akintola Benson Oke, highlighted some negative implications of environmental pollution, revealing that while children make up 10 per cent of the world’s population, over 40 percent of global burden of disease falls on them, with more than 3 million children under age five annually from environmental factors.

“Pollution is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people. That’s comparable to global diseases like malaria and HIV.

“People who live in places with high levels of air pollutants have a 20 per cent higher risk of death from lung cancer than people who live in less populated areas.”

This, to him, is why efforts at making Lagos a cleaner city must be taken serious and the issues well articulated.

“Most importantly, there are a number of factors and practices that may not be so easily understood by the generality of the populace. This is where strategic communication becomes of utmost importance.

“What strategy are we going to adopt to communicate to our people the concepts of clean energy as renewable energy which does not deplete natural resources or cause environmental harm?”

The Institute of Security Studies (ISS) alumni has appointed former Director of the Department of State Security (DSS), Mike Ejiofor Acting President.

Ejiofor, now a security consultant and analyst, got the nod to head the Alumni Association of the Institute of Security Studies, Abuja, will hold forth till February 2018, when fresh election would be conducted.

Ejiofor a lawyer, who before retirement served as the Director of DSS in several states in the South-South, South-West and North West regions, has been charged with the task of repositioning the Alumni Association.

The Chairman of the association, Denja Abdullahi, said: “The Alumni Association of the Institute of Security Studies (AAISS), Nigeria’s premier security institute at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on the 25th February, 2017 at the Institute of Security Studies (ISS), Bwari, Abuja appointed Barr Mike L. Ejiofor, as Acting President of the Association.

“He is to run the affairs of the Association until the next AGM in February 2018. His appointment followed the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past executive.

Ahead of their Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria, Cameroun defender, Ambrose Oyongo, says they will approach the back to back games with the mentality of champions of Africa.

Cameroun will face group leaders Nigeria in back to back World Cup qualifiers, with Nigeria four points ahead of them in the race to be in Russia following two straight victories. Cameroun have drawn their opening two games.

However, Oyongo believes there’s a change of mentality in the squad, which will make them approach their remaining World Cup qualifiers as the number one team in Africa after winning the Cup of Nations.

“We have to allow the joy of lifting this trophy sink in quickly because there is the big issue of qualifying for Russia 2018. As African champions we deserve to be there.

“The Confederations Cup in Russia will help us perfect our strategy before the games against Nigeria. We will be up against some of the best team in the World. We are champions of Africa, we are not scared of Nigeria,” he said.
