Some 8,000 people were evacuated Thursday from homes, shops and offices in the western German city of Duesseldorf after an unexploded World War II bomb was uncovered, local authorities said.

The 250-kilogramme (550-pound) dud explosive was found on Wednesday evening during construction works in the northern district of the city.

A one-kilometre radius was sealed off, and several roads blocked, including two highways, city authorities said, warning that this could affect traffic to the airport.

A hotel with 250 guests was also evacuated, with the bomb expected to be defused in the early afternoon.

More than 70 years after the end of the war, unexploded bombs are regularly found buried in German soil, a legacy of the Allies’ intense bombing campaigns against Nazi Germany.

Authorities estimate that some 3,000 unexploded bombs remain underground in Berlin alone.

Last Christmas, 54,000 people were evacuated from southern Germany’s Augsburg city, after the discovery of a 1.8-tonne WWII-era unexploded bomb.

School sues WAEC over seizure of students’ results (Read full details)

Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, on Tuesday adjourned till April 6 further hearing in the case of seizure of the May/June 2015 SSCE results of Christ National Model College, Ido, Ibadan.

The judge adjourned the case in order to allow the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to appear in court.

Elizabeth Shittu, counsel for the plaintiff, had approached the court to order the examination body to release the 2015 May/June SSCE results of 100 of its students.

According to Shittu, one of the allegations levelled against the secondary school by WAEC was that the 100 students who sat for the examination cheated

She said WAEC also alleged that the school carried out substitution of some examination papers like Animal Husbandry and English Language while the school failed to explain how the substitution was done.

But the plaintiff’s counsel argued that such substitution should not have led to the cancellation of all the papers of the entire students of the school.

WAEC, however, had yet to appear in court to respond to the plaintiff’s submission.

Tony Blair has had no discussions about working for US President Donald Trump, his spokesman said Sunday after reports that the former British prime minister sought to become his Middle East adviser.

According to The Mail on Sunday newspaper, Blair met with Trump’s son-in-law and key aide Jared Kushner last week to discuss taking a role with Trump.

The weekly tabloid said Blair had met Kushner three times since September.

A spokesman for Blair initially said: “I’m not going to comment on private conversations.”

But a statement on his website later said: “The story in The Mail on Sunday is an invention.

“Mr Blair has made no such ‘pitch’ to be the president’s Middle East envoy. Neither has he had any discussions about taking such a role or any role working for the new president.”

It continued: “He has been working on the peace process for 10 years. He continues to do so. He does so in a private capacity. He will continue to do it in that way.”

After leaving office in 2007, Blair was the envoy of the Middle East Quartet until 2015.

The group comprises the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States.

Blair was prime minister from 1997 to 2007, winning three general elections but his role in leading Britain into the war in Iraq has badly damaged his legacy at home.

However, he has been making more interventions in British politics since leaving his Middle East role.

Last month he urged Britons who support the European Union to “rise up” and persuade Brexit voters to change their mind about leaving the bloc, in a high-profile speech.

Blair wrote an article in The New York Times newspaper on Friday where he called for a centrist new coalition that is “popular, not populist”, in order for liberal democracy to survive and thrive in the face of rightist populism.

Iran said Thursday that Israel’s atomic arsenal is the biggest danger to world peace, a day after US President Donald Trump vowed to prevent Iran developing a nuclear weapon.

Israel is the “biggest threat to the peace and security in the region and the world,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said, quoted by state news agency IRNA.

Trump had warned Wednesday after meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington that the “threat of Iran’s nuclear ambitions” was one of the major security challenges facing Israel.

The US president told reporters that he would do “more to prevent Iran from ever developing — I mean ever — a nuclear weapon”.

But Ghasemi dismissed the comments by Trump and Netanyahu comments as “nonsense”.

“The bitter truth is that these unjust claims are being repeated by the Zionist regime that doesn’t abide by any international laws and has hundreds of warheads in its atomic arsenal,” Ghasemi said, referring to Israel.

Ghasemi said the United Nations’ atomic watchdog had repeatedly confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme.

Israel is believed to be the Middle East’s sole nuclear power but it has long refused to confirm or deny that it has such weapons.

A war of words has been escalating between Tehran and Washington since even before Trump took office in January.

Under Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama, the US and five other world powers reached a 2015 deal with Iran to lift sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.

Trump himself has repeatedly denounced the historic accord as “one of the worst deals I’ve ever seen”.

The Islamic republic’s archfoe Netanyahu has warned that the deal will expire too soon to permanently remove the threat.

Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons, saying its activities are exclusively for peaceful purposes such as power generation.

Seven Kenyan medical union officials, jailed for their role in a strike that has crippled public hospitals, were freed Wednesday ahead of their appeal and will resume negotiations with the government.

A labour court had sentenced the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentist Union officials to a month in jail on Monday.

Their sentencing prompted their union to say it was calling off talks with the government to end the strike, which began on December 5 in state hospitals.

Representatives of some 5,000 doctors in the public sector argue that their primary demand — a four-fold increase in pay — was already part of a collective bargaining agreement signed in 2013 but never brought into effect.

The court on Wednesday freed the seven until the date of their appeal on February 23.

Until then they will be allowed to resume negotiations with the government in a bid to end the work stoppage of more than two months which has closed public hospitals and prevented access to basic care.

Kenya’s labour court had handed suspended sentences to the union officials a month ago after they ignored an earlier court order to end the strike.

But Judge Hellen Wasilwa jailed them on Monday for contempt of court, arguing that the seven had provided no reason for punishment to be deferred.

Doctors have rejected a government offer to increase their salaries by 40 percent, according to union officials.

The strikers, who also denounce endemic corruption, have the support of many Kenyans. Apart from their pay rise, they are demanding better equipment for public hospitals.

Press reports recently pointed out that a member of parliament earns three times as much each month (more than 10,000 euros /$10,600) than the best-paid surgeons in the country.

With elections due in August, the doctor’s strike is a thorny issue and potentially damaging for President Uhuru Kenyatta, who will be seeking a second term in office.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday hailed the US veto of a Palestinian to be named UN envoy to Libya, saying the world body failed to give equal consideration to Israelis.

“I was informed of the possibility of the appointment of Salaam Fayyad to a UN position,” he said at Israel’s weekly cabinet meeting.

“I said that the time has come for reciprocity in the UN’s relations with Israel and free gifts cannot be constantly given to the Palestinian side,” Netanyahu said, welcoming the US veto.

“The time has come for positions and appointments to be made to the Israeli side as well,” he said, quoted in a statement issued by the prime minister’s office.

According to Israeli media reports, the Jewish state could accept the appointment of Fayyad, a former Palestinian premier, if Tzipi Livni, a former foreign minister of Israel, were offered the post of a UN deputy secretary of state.

UN chief Antonio Guterres on Saturday defended his choice of Fayyad to be the UN peace envoy to Libya, a day after the United States blocked the appointment.

The choice “was solely based on Mr Fayyad’s recognised personal qualities and his competence for that position”, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

“United Nations staff serve strictly in their personal capacity. They do not represent any government or country.”

Guterres had informed the Security Council on Wednesday of his intention to appoint Fayyad.

But the US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said Washington did not “support the signal this appointment would send within the United Nations”, where the state of Palestine does not have full membership.

“For too long, the UN has been unfairly biased in favour of the Palestinian Authority to the detriment of our allies in Israel,” she said in a statement.

The UN secretary general seeks the unanimous backing of all 15 Security Council members for appointments of his special representatives to conflict areas.

Fayyad had been tapped to replace Germany’s Martin Kobler, who has served since November 2015 as envoy to Libya, which has been in turmoil on the security and political fronts since a 2011 revolution that overthrew Moamer Kadhafi.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Saturday warned the International Monetary Fund and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble to “stop playing with fire” in the handling of his country’s debt.

Opening a meeting of his Syriza party, Tsipras said he was confident a solution would be found, a day after talks between Greece and its creditors ended in Brussels with no breakthrough.

He urged a change of course from the IMF. “We expect as soon as possible that the IMF revise its forecast.. so that discussions can continue at the technical level.”

Referring to Schaeuble, Tsipras also called for German Chancellor Angela Merkel to “encourage her finance minister to end his permanent aggressiveness” towards Greece.

Months of feuding with the IMF has raised fears of a new debt crisis.

Greece is embroiled in a row with its eurozone paymasters and the IMF over debt relief and budget targets that has rattled markets and revived talk of its place in the euro.

Eurogroup chief Jeroen Dijsselbloem said progress had been made in the Brussels talks with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and other EU and IMF officials.

But he provided few details.

The Athens government faces debt repayments of 7.0 billion euros ($7.44 billion) this summer that it cannot afford without defusing the feud that is holding up new loans from Greece’s 86 billion euro bailout.

Breaking the stalemate in the coming weeks is seen as paramount with elections in the Netherlands on March 15 and France in April through June threatening to make a resolution even more difficult.

But Dijsselbloem warned Friday that the next meeting of eurozone ministers on February 20 — seen as an unofficial deadline ahead of the votes — would still be too early for a breakthrough.

“We will take stock of the further progress (during that meeting)”, said Dijsselbloem, who is also the Dutch finance minister.

Sri Lankan police have arrested an astrologer after his prediction that President Maithripala Sirisena would die last week proved to be wide of the mark.

Vijithamuni Rohana de Silva, a 52-year-old former sailor in the Sri Lankan navy, was hauled before magistrates in Colombo on Wednesday where he was granted bail on a bond of two million rupees ($13,300).

“He was arrested following an investigation into a complaint from the media ministry that his false predictions had caused unrest in society,” a official who asked not to be named told AFP.

Prosecutors said de Silva wrote a series of blogs over the past six months that foretold Sirisena’s death last Thursday, January 26, but the day passed off peacefully for the president.

De Silva is no stranger to the law courts and once served a prison term for being part of an attempt to assassinate the then-Indian premier Rajiv Gandhi while he was visiting the island in 1987.

Sri Lankan politicians place great faith in astrology. Many have their own seers whose predictions are sometimes treated with more deference than the advice of senior aides.
