Britain plans for all options as Brexit nears…Read full details

British Prime Minister Theresa May (C-R) greets Dutch Prime Minister and leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie – VVD) Mark Rutte (C-L) during the EU summit at the new "Europa" building in Brussels on March 9, 2017. Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe's most powerful leader, hit back saying Tusk was the man for the job and would offer much-needed stability during Brexit and in a range of other situations, from the migrant crisis to handling a more aggressive Russia. Britain is drawing up contingency plans in case its Brexit negotiations with the EU fail, a minister said Sunday as speculation mounted that the withdrawal process could start this week.

Brexit minister David Davis said it was in “everybody’s interests that we get a good outcome”, but said the government was “planning for the contingency, all the various outcomes”.

He was speaking after MPs warned that ministers must prepare for the possibility that, with EU treaties allowing just two years to agree a new relationship, Britain might well leave without a deal.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said she is optimistic about settling the divorce and a new trade agreement with the EU within the timeframe, but would walk away rather than accept a bad deal.

The cross-party parliamentary foreign affairs committee said this “represents a very destructive outcome leading to mutually assured damage for the EU and the UK”, citing economic losses and legal confusion.

Davis told the BBC he did not think that was “remotely likely”, adding: “There will be tough points in this negotiation. But it’s in absolutely everybody’s interests that we get a good outcome.”

The MPs noted that the previous government had not prepared for the shock vote to leave the EU in the June referendum, something they called “gross negligence”.

“Making an equivalent mistake would constitute a serious dereliction of duty by the present administration,” they said in the report.

– Brexit imminent –

A bill empowering May to trigger Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty and begin the withdrawal process returns to the House of Commons on Monday for debate.

Without further opposition, it could pass the House of Lords that night.

After it is rubber-stamped by Queen Elizabeth II, May could start Brexit at any point.

Asked when the process might start, Davis noted that “in theory it’s the point at which you have royal assent”, but refused to confirm a date.

“Each date has different implications in terms of when it can be responded to by the Council (of EU leaders),” he said.

One factor could be the Dutch elections on Wednesday.

Keir Starmer, the Brexit spokesman for the opposition Labour party, repeated to Sky News that he expected the government to start Brexit “probably on Wednesday or Thursday”.

A father of nine children,  Adekunle Adewusi, on Tuesday appeared in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly disposing his child’s remains inside a canal.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, told the court that the 49-year-old father of No. 25, Folorunaho Kuku Str, Opebi, Ikeja, committed the offences on Feb. 7, at about 10. 00 p.m.

Omisakin said that the corpse of the four-year-old Rachel was found inside a canal close to the residence of the accused.

“The accused in his statement claimed that the deceased was pushed on a sharp object by her play mates and because the wound was not properly treated, it developed into a big issue.

“Instead of taking the child to the hospital, he decided to do a home remedy which eventually led to her death.

“And instead of depositing the remains at the mortuary, the accused dumped her body inside a canal close to his residence.

“The deceased is the sixth child of the accused and has eight other siblings,” she said.

The offence contravened sections 165(a) (b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2015.

Adewusi who is standing trial on a two-count charge for misconduct with regards to a corpse and without lawful justification in disposing a corpse, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mr A.T. Elias ordered that the prosecutor to bring the other eight children of the accused and his wife so as to enable him to give his ruling on the adjourned date.

The magistrate also  remanded the accused in police custody, and adjourned the  case till Feb. 27.

Nigeria will not seek IMF loan – Adeosun

Ugandan opens gold refinery, to import from South Sudan, Congo

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Uganda’s first gold refinery, which opened on Monday, will use raw gold from conflict-ridden South Sudan and Eastern Congo, its owner, Africa Gold Refinery, said.

It dismissed activists’ concerns that such a move could fuel violence in the region.

The refinery, which is in Entebbe, south of the capital Kampala, will process raw gold from the region as Uganda has only small mines and no commercial mine.

Rights activists, however, are concerned about the use of gold from conflict areas such as the volatile mineral-rich east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan, mired in civil war.

“Gold, which is used to finance conflict, might be finding its way into supply chains,” said George Boden, an activist at London-based rights group Global Witness.

A U.S. law passed in 2010, the Dodd-Frank Act, requires companies to disclose whether their products contain minerals from conflict-ridden parts of Africa.

The law aims to hinder armed groups from using minerals to finance conflicts.

“It’s a very high compliance refinery. We do due diligence for every customer who comes in,” Alain Goetz, the Chief Executive Officer of Africa Gold Refinery (AGR), told newsmen.

Goetz is AGR’s majority shareholder and he also owns a stake in Belgian gold refiner Tony Goetz NV.

He said AGR would carefully select its customers, comply with the law and label its gold accordingly.

The president recalled his letter of Jan. 18, 2017 in which he notified the Senate that he was taking part of my annual leave.

“During my leave I took the opportunity to have routine checkups and consult my long standing doctors in London. In the course of the routine examinations, certain tests results indicated the need for a course of medications and further appointments rescheduled for next week.
