Outgoing Barcelona boss Luis Enrique claimed his side have the firepower to stick six goals past Paris Saint-Germain as they attempt to make Champions League history by overturning a 4-0 first leg deficit on Wednesday.

“If they can score four goals against us, we can score six,” said Enrique on Tuesday.

“We have nothing to lose and a lot to win.”

The fierce criticism that came Enrique’s way after their humiliation in Paris three weeks ago has eased after he announced last week that he will step down after three seasons as coach at the end of the campaign.

Rather than show any ill-effects from Enrique’s decision, optimism in the Catalan capital of a stunning fightback has soared after thrashing Sporting Gijon and Celta Vigo 6-1 and 5-0 respectively in their last two outings.

“Despite the fact that the result from the first leg is very one-sided, we are only halfway through the tie,” added an uncharacteristically buoyant Enrique.

“In 95 minutes, an infinite amount of things can happen.

“I am convinced that at some point we will be close to qualifying.

“That isn’t to say we will do it, but that we will be close. And, when you are close, our confidence will soar and theirs could start to diminish.”

No team in the history of the Champions League has ever turned around a four-goal deficit.

– Nothing impossible –
However, the statistics back up Enrique’s confidence.

The results from more than a third of his home games as Barca coach would be good enough to at least force the game to extra time.

That record includes all three of Barca’s Champions League games this season as they dismantled Celtic (7-0), Manchester City (4-0) and Borussia Moenchengladbach (4-0) by a combined score of 15-0.

Luis Suarez was also bullish as he claimed if there is one team capable of mounting a historic comeback it is Barcelona.

“We are aware that it is a difficult situation to turn the tie around, but in football nothing is impossible,” said Suarez.

“We have to be convinced that we can do it. If there is a team that can score four goals, I think it is Barcelona but with our philosophy of how to play and controlling the game.”

However, the Uruguayan striker pleaded for patience from an expectant near 100,000 fans at the Camp Nou.

An away goal for PSG would mean Barca would have to score at least six to have any chance of reaching the quarter-finals for a 10th straight season.

“We are aware that the game lasts 94 or 95 minutes and we have to be ambitious but also patient.

“We hope that the fans understand and we are the first ones that want to make history, but we have to play with a cool head.”

Barca are at full-strength with captain Andres Iniesta replacing Rafinha or Ivan Rakitic likely to be the Enrique’s only change from the side that thrashed Celta at the weekend.

Retired Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, says the Federal Government planned liberalisation of modular refineries will boost development in the oil rich Niger Delta region.

Boroh, who is also the Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme, assured the people of the region that the proposed modular refineries in oil producing communities would usher in a new era in the Niger Delta region.

Gen. Boroh in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Yenagoa, reiterated the commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to develop the Niger Delta region.

He maintained that the intention to make oil producing communities the hub for refining and related activities would put them in a better position to drive the local economy.

Boroh appealed to the youths to be calm, focused and more articulate in their quest for better living conditions and take advantage of the good gestures of the present administration.

The amnesty coordinator explained that the Federal Government is seeking better ways for Niger Delta people to participate in the development process of the region through meaningful engagements.

According to the amnesty boss, the Federal Government’s new partnership arrangement will bring about an unprecedented infrastructural development in the region.

Boroh commended the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for taking the pains to identify with the people through his tour of the region. According to Boroh, the planned oil-communities-intervention-meeting by the Federal Government to chart short, medium and long term development blueprint was a strategy to enhance the socio-economic activities in the region.

He expressed the hope that with the proposed coming on stream of modular refineries, the ex-agitators and other youths in the region will be meaningfully engaged in decent jobs.

Meanwhile, the leadership of Phase II ex-agitators in the Niger Delta region in a reaction to the development, applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for demonstrating his sincere wish for the people of the region,

The ex-agitators said that the option of allowing modular refineries to be located in oil bearing communities, speaks volume of the sincere intentions of the present administration towards the Niger Delta youths

Chairman of the Phase II ex-agitators,Mr Salvation Rifus, told NAN that the tour of the oil communities by the acting president had shown that the Federal Government was committed to development .

He noted that the decision to allow the communities to legally operate modular refineries was the best thing that has happened to the people, describing it as a welcome development.

FIFA insisted Thursday there is no conclusive proof that heading a ball causes an increased risk of brain disease, after the release of a study on footballers who died from dementia.

“To our very best knowledge, there is currently no true evidence of the negative effect of heading or other sub-concussive blows,” football’s world body said in response to calls by British neurological experts for greater research.

“Results from studies on active and former professional football players in relation to brain function are inconclusive,” a spokesman said in a statement.

The spokesman acknowledged that professional players are “more exposed to all football activities including heading from early childhood than recreational players.”

But FIFA said: “Fortunately, football (soccer) does not belong to the high-risk sports for brain and head injuries.”

A British study said professional footballers are at heightened risk of developing a brain disease that can cause dementia and is usually found in boxers and American football players.

The study, published in the Acta Neuropathologica journal, looked at 14 retired footballers with dementia who started playing football and heading the ball in childhood or early teens.

Post-mortem exams on six of the players found that four showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), far in excess of the average rate of 12 percent found in the general population.

It is the first time CTE has been confirmed in a study involving ex-football players.

“The findings of our study show a potential link between playing football and CTE,” lead researcher Helen Ling, from University College London’s Institute of Neurology, told AFP.

“Large-scale study is needed and cooperation from professional bodies such as the FA (Football Association) and FIFA will be required,” she said.

All of the ex-players involved had been referred to a psychiatry service in Swansea, Wales between 1980 and 2010. Twelve of the 14 died with advanced dementia.

FIFA said that it has been “actively following the issue of head and brain injuries” for more than 15 years including publishing scientific studies with international sports federations and research groups.

It said rule changes toughening sanctions for elbow to the head blows and introducing a head injury protocol in 2014 had cut head injury numbers.

FIFA quoted one international study on children aged seven to 12 years which indicated there was “one concussion with ball contact every 200,000 playing hours.”

“FIFA will continue to monitor the situation of head injuries, maintaining constant contact with current and on-going studies regarding long-term neurocognitive changes, both in male and female football players,” the spokesman said declaring the health of players to be “a top priority in developing the game.”

Thirty-seven people were arrested in the Paris suburbs when clashes erupted after a protest over the assault of a young black man allegedly sodomised with a police truncheon, a police source said Sunday.

Around 2,000 people demonstrated Saturday outside a courthouse to demand justice for Theo, a 22-year-old youth worker who required surgery after his arrest last week in the gritty suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois.

The protest in the northern suburb of Bobigny near Aulnay-sous-Bois was peaceful at the start but groups of demonstrators later clashed with police and went on the rampage, attacking cars, shops and public property.

Several vehicles were torched and bus shelters and shopfronts smashed in Bobigny and neighbouring areas.

A little girl trapped in a burning car was rescued by a 16-year-old demonstrator, who was heralded as a hero on social media. The police accused “several hundred” individuals of various “acts of violence and damage.”

The rioting capped a week of nightly clashes in the northern Paris suburb over the treatment of Theo, who claims a police officer sodomised him with his baton after a stop-and-search check in a housing estate.

Around 50 people have been detained since the protests began. One officer has been charged with rape over the affair, and three others with assault. All four have been suspended from their duties.

Theo’s case has revived long-simmering frustrations over policing in immigrant communities, where young men accuse the police of repeatedly targeting them in aggressive stop-and-search operations and using excessive force during arrests.

The police for their part complain of being drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with delinquents and drug dealers operating out of housing estates.

In 2005, the death of two teenagers who were electrocuted while hiding from police in an electricity substation sparked weeks of riots in France. Some of the demonstrators in Bobigny on Saturday carried placards reading “Police rape” and “Police kill innocent people”.

Small rallies took place in other French cities, including Rouen in the north, Nantes in the west and Toulouse in the south-west. Theo is still in hospital where he was operated for severe injuries to the anus and rectal area. He was declared unfit to work for two months.

An internal police investigation found insufficient evidence to support allegations that he was raped and said the injuries were not inflicted intentionally. The criminal probe is, however, ongoing.

The party’s Chairman in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Chief Godwin Ishiali, made this known in. statement on Friday.

Ishiali said that Onwe (PDP-Ohaukwu North) was accused of attending meetings of an opposition party, among other anti-party activities.

“The lawmaker is expected to appear before the ad-hoc committee set up for that purpose by 10 a.m at the council’s headquarters, Ezzamgbo.

“The dates include: Feb.9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, March 2, 4, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28 and 30,” he said.

Onwe in an interview with NAN confirmed the receipt of the summon, but declined further comments on the issue.

“I prefer not to make comments on the issue currently,” he said.

19-year-old lures 6-year-old sister to his room, defiles her

A 19-year-old Isah Umar, who allegedly lured his six-year-old sister into his room before defiling her, is to cool his heels in prison in the next 30 days, a Sokoto Magistrates’ Court ruled on Friday.

The Magistrate, Mr Abubakar Adamu, who gave the ruling, said the accused should remain behind bars pending the outcome of further investigations by the Police.

The 19-year-old Umar, who lives in Sabon Birni area of Sokoto, is facing a charge of child defilement.

The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him.

According to the prosecution, the accused committed the offence at his apartment on Aug. 2, 2016.

Sgt. Rose Mathew told the court that when the girl raised alarm, the accused tried to silence her by beating her and covering her mouth.

Mathew said the offence violated Section 283 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation 2004.

The case has been adjourned to March 9.

Woman in court for slapping employer’s mother

A 32-year-old female employee, Sarah Oboh, who allegedly slapped and tore the clothes of her employer’s mother was on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Oboh, a resident of Surulere area of Lagos State, is being tried for breach of peace, damage and assault.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Feb.1 at Bolaji Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said that the accused assaulted Mrs Olubunmi Jeyibo, by slapping her and tearing her clothes.

“The accused gave the complainant a slap and she also tore her clothes valued at N25,000,” he said.

He said that the complainant was assaulted when she went to her late son’s company to check the well being of staff and discuss with the accused who was managing the company.

“She went to her son’s company to have discussion with the accused who is in charge after the demise of her son.

“During the discussion, an argument ensued and the accused slapped the complainant on her right cheek.

“She went further by tearing her clothes,” he said.

The offences contravened sections 166, 170 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 170 prescribes a year imprisonment as penalty for assault.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbule, adjourned the case to March 1, for mention.

Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in the country are to contribute 5 per cent of their annual Profit After Tax to an Agriculture Fund, which would be used to vigorously pursue the current administration’s efforts at diversifying the nation’s economy.

The Director of Banking Supervision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Ahmad Abdullahi, disclosed this at the end of yesterday’s Bankers’ Committee meeting, in Abuja.

The fund to be domiciled in the CBN is to be used as equity stakes in agri-businesses and for other sectors that would make a success of the import-substitution programme of the federal government.

“The Bankers’ Committee has taken a decision to come up with an initiative in support of the federal government export drive by supporting SMEs and other businesses . Export drive as well as, import substitution and so have agreed to contribute 5 per cent of each bank’s Profit After Tax to a pool of funds that will be kept with the Central Bank of Nigeria and it will be used to finance eligible, bankable projects that are meant for export drive or import substitution.

“A Project Review Committee will asses submissions of projects and make recommendations to the Bankers’ Committee. The scheme is such that each bank has an equity holding based on its Annual contributions. “

Mr. Abdullahi explained that any industry that is into processing of agricultural produce towards export or towards imports substitution would be eligible to benefit from the scheme.

He added that the scheme would commence this year using 2016 Financial Accounts of banks which could be published anytime from April..

The bankers also agreed to re-Introduce Cashless policy into the country with a view to capturing all states of the federation between May and October, this year.

Mr. Chidi Umeanor, Head of Shared Services of the apex bank, some states including Lagos, Abia, Anambra, Kano, Ogun had already been covered and that the remaining 30 would be taken in three batches of 10. The first set of 10 would be brought captured in on the May 1; the second, Augusdt 1; and the third on October 1.
“He said, “there have been a lot of sensitization and immense infrastructure had been put in place to provide the necessary platform for its success. We now feel that it time for us to re-introduce the cashless policy which we started in 2012.

“In doing this we take care to ensure that the vulnerable among us are well protected. Clearly we know that a lot of transactions that happen in the banking industry in terms of cash withdraws and deposits that less than 10 per cent do anything above n150, 000 0r 500, 000 . so nobody will be really affected negatively. “

On Ponzi and other virtual currency businesses, CBN’s Spokesman, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor warned that they were unregulated and highly risky and that as such, Nigerians should avoid them.

His words, “Sine last year, we have issued statements asking Nigerians to beware of such schemes. They are not regulated. They are highly risky. Some of them were actually fraudulent but some Nigerians didn’t listen and a good number of them burnt their hands.

“The position has not changed. The committee’s position is that those schemes are not regulated and that Nigerians should beware of them. Don’t take your money to any institution that is not regulated by the CBN or insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance corporation.

“I am sure even SEC and the EFCC have given that kind of warning. That is where we are.”

Man turns 13-year-old beggar to sex slave

An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a trader, who allegedly defiled a 13-year-old female beggar.

Thirty-two-year-old Ibrahim Usman, a resident of Ojoo, Ibadan, is facing a count charge of defilement.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Lucky Ihiehie, Usman committed the offence in December 2016 in Ibadan and was arrested on Feb. 5 at Mile 12.

Ihiehie said that the trader took the victim from where she was begging and turned her into a `sex machine’.

“The accused took her to his sister’s house in Ibadan and had sex with her twice at night. He told her to start living with him in his sister’s house.

“He brought her to Lagos on Feb. 3 to buy some things for his business at Mile 12, but on Feb. 5 one of Hausa leaders saw them.

“After series of questions, it was discovered that the girl had been passing through a lot in the hands of the accused.

“She was taken without her parents’ knowledge and was being defiled every night by the accused,’’ he submitted.

Ihiehie said that the victim told the police that since she met the accused, she had not been the same.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The trader, however, pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, remanded him in prison custody, and ordered that the victim should be taken to an orphanage until the next adjourned date, March 3.

Kaduna refinery loses N2bn annually

Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), said its subsidiary, ‎Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), lost about N2.2 billion annually ‎to illegal tapping on its raw water pipeline.

The corporation said this in a statement in Abuja on Thursday by its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr Ndu Ughamadu.‎

According to Ughamadu, the raw water pipeline which runs from Kaduna River, generates power for the running of the refinery and serves as coolants for equipment and combats fire outbreaks.

‎”Sequel to the series of tapping, the refinery now spends more on diesel and other material inputs in the maintenance of its generators and other equipment,” he said.

‎He said that KRPC Managing Director, Malam Idi Mukhtar, had lamented that the consumption of the water by settlers who encroached on the company’s premises was an unnecessary, additional burden to the refinery’s industrial requirements.

‎”Mukhtar said this must be resolved urgently by relevant state government agencies.

‎”He said other losses were that it slows down the build-up rate of water in the reserve tanks, which endangers the refinery as the plant is expected to maintain a minimum level of water requirement that is considered safe for operations.

“‎The illegal acts are committed mostly in Janruwa, Kamazo, Namaigero and Mahuta areas of Kaduna metropolis, which are the communities along the raw water intake pipeline Right of Way.

‎”He also explained that a particular amount of water, sufficient enough to generate steam and other industrial consumption is needed.

“This is because of the incidents of illegal tapping of our water pipeline, we need to put more effort to meet our industrial requirements,” Ughamadu said.

He expressed pleasure ‎that the Kaduna State Government had promised to look into the issue with a view to finding a lasting solution to the challenge.

‎He explained that Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority and Kaduna State Water Board had been contacted to address the issues of land encroachment on KRPC Right of Way.

‎Ughamadu advised illegal tappers of the refinery’s raw water pipeline to desist from the act, warning that the raw water was not fit for human consumption because it was untreated.

‎He quoted KRPC Executive Director, Operations, Alhaji Shehu Malami, as saying that if the problem was not addressed,‎ a time would come when the plant would not be able to run some of its critical units.

‎”Malami said that the refinery was currently operating at 65 per cent capacity, producing 1.7 million litres of petrol, 1.7 million litres of diesel and 700, 000 litres of kerosene, daily.

‎”The daily rate of loading is massive; even, on Sundays products are being loaded to meet the growing demand in the country,” Ughamadu said.

The death toll from three days of heavy snow across Afghanistan rose to 54 on Sunday and there were fears the toll could rise as rescuers began clearing roads to remote areas.

Avalanches destroyed scores of homes and blocked roads in central and northeastern provinces, a spokesman for the ministry of natural disasters told AFP.

“So far, 54 persons have lost their lives and 52 were injured as a result of avalanches and freezing weather in 22 provinces,” said Mohammad Omar Mohammadi.

He said 168 houses were destroyed and 340 cattle killed.

Authorities fear the toll may rise sharply because rescue crews have yet to reach some of the worst-hit areas.

In the badly hit northeastern province of Badakhshan at least 18 people, including three women and two children, were killed when avalanches hit their houses overnight, said provincial spokesman Naweed Frotan.

“Several dozens are still trapped, we are trying to rescue them,” he said, adding that many roads were still blocked.

Five people were killed by avalanches in the Balkhab district of Sari Pul province in northern Afghanistan and at least 70 people trapped under the snow were being rescued, said provincial spokesman Zabiullah Amani.

“The roads to Balkhab are still blocked and we are trying to open them,” he said.

Freezing weather killed at least two people and over 100 animals in the western province of Badghis.

In Parwan province just north of Kabul, the spokesman for governor Wahid Sediqqi said 16 people died.

The government declared Sunday, a normal working day in Afghanistan, to be a public holiday to deter non-essential travel and ensure schools were closed.

Unusually, snow even fell in the southern province of Kandahar.

Neighbouring Pakistan was also hit by severe weather, with at least 13 people killed in the northwest by avalanches or heavy rain.

An avalanche smashed into eight homes in the village of Shershal in Chitral district, killing nine people including four women and four children.

The region has been hit by heavy snowfall that is four feet (1.2 metres) deep in some places.

Six people who had been trapped beneath the snow were rescued.

A separate avalanche killed a soldier at a border checkpoint in Chitral district, a military statement said, while six more soldiers were injured.

Chitral district mayor Maghfriat Shah said the city’s airport was shut because of the weather.

The region’s electricity supply was also disrupted after the main power line was damaged.

In the Khyber tribal district on the Afghan border in the northwest, three infant girls were killed and two women injured when the roof of their house collapsed in heavy rain.

Deadly avalanches are common in Afghanistan’s mountainous areas in winter and rescue efforts are frequently hampered by lack of equipment.

Despite billions of dollars in international aid after the ousting of the Taliban government in 2001, Afghanistan remains among the world’s poorest nations.

Last month heavy snowfall and freezing weather killed 27 children, all under the age of five, in Jawzjan province in northern Afghanistan.

NECO to begin sales of NCEE forms soon

The National Examinations Council (NECO) says it has concluded preparations to begin sales of its 2017 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) forms.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the examination is for admission of candidates into the Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) 1 arm of the 104 unity colleges across the country.

The Lagos State Coordinator of the council, Mr Godwin Adejo, told NAN in Lagos on Thursday that logistics have been put in place to ensure a hitch free sale of the forms.
