Ahead of today’s appearance of Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) before the Senate, members of the House of Representatives Tactical Committee on Recession yesterday visited the customs authorities to seek their support in its planned public hearing.

The hearing, according to the chairman of the committee, Hon. Bode Ayorinde would attract stakeholders across sectors of the economy, including the service, to brainstorm on ways of managing levies on products, for the overall benefits of importers and manufacturers.

Leading members of the committee to meet with the NCS in Abuja, Ayorinde explained that the House committee has the mandate of reviewing policies and programmes of government towards minimizing the effects of the recessive economy.

He said a date for the public hearing where the review would be carried out would soon be announced.

In his response, Col Ali assured the committee of the readiness of the service to participate in the hearing.

He explained that the NCS new customs duty payments for vehicles was not targeted at particular individuals but those engaging in car smuggling, no matter their statuses in the society.

He assured further that with the renewed enlightenment campaigns on the policy now in place, the service would do all that is possible to sanitize processes of taxation and importation of vehicles into the country.

Worried by the way NCS was implementing some of its policies, coupled with allegation of highhandedness, Senator Dino Melaye, APC, Kogi urged senators, in a motion to summon the organization’s CG to appear before the upper chamber to clear himself.
