IS leader Baghdadi ‘flees Mosul’ as Iraqi forces advance

Islamic State group chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is reported to have abandoned Mosul, leaving local commanders behind to lead the battle against Iraqi forces advancing in the city.

With Iraqi troops making steady progress in their assault to retake Mosul from the jihadists, a US defence official said Baghdadi had fled to avoid being trapped inside.

It was the latest sign that IS is feeling the pressure from twin US-backed offensives that have seen it lose much of the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, the defence official said Baghdadi had left Mosul before Iraqi forces seized control of a key road at the beginning of this month, isolating the jihadists in the city.

“He was in Mosul at some point before the offensive…. He left before we isolated Mosul and Tal Afar,” a town to the west, the official said.

“He probably gave broad strategic guidance and has left it to battlefield commanders.”

Baghdadi, who declared IS’s cross-border “caliphate” at a Mosul mosque in 2014, in an audio message in November urged supporters to make a stand in the city rather than “retreating in shame”.

Iraq launched the offensive to retake Mosul — which involves tens of thousands of soldiers, police and allied militia fighters — in October.

After recapturing its eastern side, the forces set their sights on the city’s smaller but more densely populated west.

– ‘Ran away like chickens’ –
In recent days Iraqi forces have retaken a series of neighbourhoods in west Mosul as well as the provincial government headquarters and a museum where IS militants filmed themselves destroying priceless artefacts.

On Thursday Iraqi forces were “combing the city centre area to defuse (bombs in) homes and shops and buildings,” Lieutenant Colonel Abdulamir al-Mohammedawi of Iraq’s elite Rapid Response Division told AFP.

The area is located on the edge of Mosul’s Old City, a warren of narrow streets and closely spaced houses that could see some of the toughest fighting of the battle.

“Currently there is no order from the operations command to advance toward the Old City. We will advance when this order is issued,” Mohammedawi said.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians are believed to still be trapped under IS rule in Mosul.

Those who did manage to escape the city said the jihadists were growing increasingly desperate.

“We were used as human shields,” said Abdulrazzaq Ahmed, a 25-year-old civil servant, who escaped along with hundreds of other civilians to Iraqi police waiting outside the city.

Rayan Mohammed, a frail 18-year-old who was once given 60 lashes for missing prayers, said the jihadists were scrambling in the face of the Iraqi offensive.

“They ran away like chickens,” he said.

– Marines deployed to Syria –
West Mosul is the most heavily populated area under IS control and one of two major urban centres it still holds, along with Raqa in Syria.

In Syria, a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has been advancing on Raqa.

A US official said Wednesday that a Marine Corps artillery battery had been sent into Syria to support the battle for Raqa — joining around 500 American special operations fighters who have been training and assisting the SDF.

The United States has been leading a coalition since mid-2014 carrying out air strikes against the jihadists in both Syria and Iraq.

Strikes on an IS-held northern Syrian village thought to have been conducted by the coalition killed at least 23 civilians on Thursday, a monitor said.

Among the dead were at least eight children and six women, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The coalition said earlier this month that its raids had unintentionally killed at least 220 civilians since 2014 in both countries.

Elsewhere in Syria, Turkish troops and their rebel allies have pushed south from the Turkish border and driven IS out of the northern town of Al-Bab.

Russian-backed government troops have meanwhile swept eastwards from Syria’s second city Aleppo and seized a swathe of countryside from the jihadists.

The US defence official said IS was now looking beyond the seemingly inevitable losses of Mosul and Raqa.

“They… are still making plans to continue to function as a pseudo-state centred in the Euphrates River valley,” the official said.

– Wedding party suicide attack –
Even with the territory they control greatly reduced, the jihadists remain a major threat.

At least 26 people were killed late on Wednesday when two suicide bombers attacked a celebration being held the night before a wedding north of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said.

The bombings in the Al-Hajaj area, north of the city of Tikrit, also wounded 25 people.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but IS carries out frequent suicide bombings targeting both civilians and members of the security forces in Iraq.

A bill for an Act to authorise the provision of free prenatal and postnatal health services for pregnant women in government hospitals has been stepped down in the House of Representatives.

The bill which was to be read the second time on the floor of the green chamber was not debated because copies were not made available to members on time in line with the rules of the house.

Speaking earlier, the sponsor of the bill, Rep. Tony Nwoye (Anambra-PDP) said the importance of the bill cannot be over emphasised.

He said the bill seeks to ensure that every pregnant woman in the country is registered in a government hospital within three months of conception.

Nwoye said the bill seeks to educate pregnant women on the necessary steps for safe delivery and to enable them access free healthcare.

According to the lawmaker, the bill also canvassed enough time to enable women to breastfeed their babies and to extend the free medical service to three months after delivery.

He said pregnant women should be entitled to get employed and maintaining their jobs while they answer the call of procreation.

However, the Minority Leader of the House, Rep. Leo Ogor (Delta-PDP) said the bill was very important and members needed to be well informed before the debate.

According to him, members needed to consider the financial implication of the bill and other related matters before the debate.

In his contribution, the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Rep. Emmanuel Oker-Jev (Benue-APC) said he had always drawn the attention of members to the rules of the house.

He appealed to members to always abide by all the rules of the house including making copies of bills available in good time before the debate.

However, Rep. Nicholas Ossai (Delta-PDP) said the sponsor of the bill circulated the soft copy of the bill to members in good time. Ossai urged members to debate the bill because of its nature and importance to national development.

The members of the lower chamber, however, unanimously stepped down the bill. While ruling on the matter, the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara did not mention when the bill would be debated.

The Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Babachir Lawal, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is laying a solid foundation for the future generation through his leadership style.

Lawal spoke at a roundtable with top government officials in Owerri on Saturday.
The SGF was in Owerri on Friday where he was conferred with a Fellowship at the 5th Convocation of Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo.

He said Buhari’s administration was not witch hunting anybody, but wanted to ensure that impunity and corruption was eradicated in the country.

Lawal said the Federal Government had already engaged over 30,000 youths through its numerous programmes and job creation, adding that one million youths would be gainfully employed before the end of 2017.

He said the president inherited a lot of challenges ranging from insecurity to corruption, adding that the situation needed support and patience to fix the economy.
He said that everybody must join hand to rediscover the nation and to put it back to where it rightfully belong.

“We have commenced a new journey of rapid and sustainable economic growth that will usher us prosperity despite all the challenges.

“Our economy should have been among the strongest in the world if not for the high level of corruption which is more evident in key sectors like education and health care delivery,” he said.
The SGF said the administration had recorded huge success since it started the fight against corruption and had prosecuted many public office holders.

He added that the Whistle blowing policy had helped the administration recovered millions of naira from corrupt Nigerians, adding that the huge sum would be reinvested to boost the econmy.
Lawal said that government was aware of the pains Nigerians were passing through, but assured that government was doing everything possible to address it.

“This government has introduced diversification policy and very soon we will begin to witness changes as we have witnessed in rice and wheat production,” he said.
Gov. Rochas Okorocha said that this was not the time for Nigerians to weep or complain in the struggle of nationhood, but a time to comply.

According to him, Nigeria must write the history of this recession, just like other advanced nation did in their own struggle to greatness.
Okorocha further said Buhari’s main job was not to build sky scrapers, but to lay solid foundation for other successors to build.

He said Nigerians should continue to pray for the president as his emergence was divine and the purpose must be fulfilled.

Okorocha also admonished youths to de-emphasise the search for civil service jobs, but to see agriculture as the fastest means to create wealth.

Minnows Lincoln stun Burnley in FA Cup

Sean Raggett scored an 89th-minute winner as non-league Lincoln City stunned Burnley 1-0 on Saturday to claim one of the biggest upsets in the history of the FA Cup.

Eighty-one places below Burnley in the English football pyramid, fifth-tier Lincoln prevailed when defender Raggett squeezed a header over the line following a late corner at Turf Moor.

Lincoln are the first non-league team to reach the FA Cup’s last eight since Queens Park Rangers in 1914.

They are the eighth side from below England’s four fully professional divisions to have beaten top-flight opposition since World War II and only the second to have done so since 1989.

Burnley drew 1-1 at home to runaway Premier League leaders Chelsea last weekend and have beaten Liverpool and champions Leicester City on home turf this season.

Lincoln join Hereford United, who toppled Newcastle United in 1972, and Sutton United, conquerors of Coventry City in 1989, among the ranks of the FA Cup’s non-league giant-killers.

Sutton, also of the fifth-tier National League, will hope to pull off another upset when they host Arsenal on Monday.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche made six changes to his starting XI and was quickly made aware that his side were in for a scrap as Lincoln’s Nathan Arnold squared for Jack Muldoon to sweep a first-time shot over the bar.

There was an early setback for Burnley when Johann Berg Gudmundsson was forced off in the 20th minute after a foul by Alan Power, with George Boyd coming on.

Burnley were unable to convert the handful of chances they created, with Lincoln goalkeeper Paul Farman saving from Andre Gray and Joey Barton, while Scott Arfield and Gray shot off-target.

Burnley’s frustrations manifested themselves in some antagonistic behaviour by renowned brawler Barton during the second half.

He escaped censure for stamping on Matt Rhead’s foot and then pretending to have been struck by the Lincoln striker and was later booked for slapping Terry Hawkridge.

With a replay beckoning, a deep corner from the right was headed back across goal by Lincoln captain Luke Waterfall and Raggett met it with a header that Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton could not keep out.

Trump attacks media again in early morning Twitter blast

President Donald Trump attacked two major US newspapers in a Twitter blast on a busy Saturday when he was scheduled to speak with five world leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

Trump criticized The New York Times and The Washington Post as being dishonest in a series of tweets that featured several typos. The reason for the early morning onslaught was not immediately clear.

Trump was scheduled to speak during the day with Putin and the leaders of Japan, Germany, France and Australia.

Rather than address what he did in his fast-paced first week in power, or prepare for the frenetic day ahead, Trump laid into two of the most prestigious US dailies.

He has made a habit of attacking the media, which he accuses of treating him unfairly. Trump wrote Saturday that the two papers “got me wrong right from the beginning and still have not changed course, and never will. DISHONEST.”

“The failing @nytimes has been wrong about me from the very beginning. Said I would lose the primaries, then the general election. FAKE NEWS!,” he added. Twitter is one of Trump’s preferred conduits for communication. He has more than 22.5 million followers on the messaging platform.
