South Africans march over looming welfare payment crisis…Read full details

Hundreds of members and supporters of the South African opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) demonstrate outside the South African Social Development Department to demand the resignation of the social development minister in Pretoria on March 10, 2017. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Pretoria on Friday over fears that South Africa’s welfare agency may be unable to make benefit payments to millions of poor people.

The march was led by Mmusi Maimane, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance party, and follows weeks of uncertainty over grants to more than 17 million people.

It is feared that payments will come to a halt after the government failed to announce a new company to process them when the current distributor’s contract ends on March 31.

“In less than three weeks’ time, millions of South Africans stand to lose their social grants if an urgent solution to the grant payment crisis is not found,” said Maimane.

“A third of our people depend on grants to survive,” he added as he addressed the march which was joined by disabled people and mothers with young children.

The protesters marched outside the social development ministry, many of them clad in the blue of the Democratic Alliance.

Welfare grants are a critical safety net in a country where poverty and inequality are rampant.

Around 140 billion rand ($10.6 billion) is paid out every year.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) — which is suffering declining popularity — has used the subsidies paid to the elderly, orphans and children to secure the backing of many poor voters.

South Africa’s welfare system was plunged into chaos in 2014 when a court ruled that the contract of the current distributor, Cash Paymaster Services, was granted illegally.

Maimane said the grants debacle was a “massive responsibility on the shoulders of the government”.

The crisis has seen opposition parties in parliament call for the sacking of social development minister Bathabile Dlamini, despite her pledge this week that the grants would be paid on time.

Maimane said his party would pursue criminal charges against Dlamini if she failed to resolve the crisis.

FG to inject N500bn into mortgage bank to tackle housing deficit (Read full details)

Federal Mortgage Bank

The Federal Government says it will inject N500 billion into the Federal Mortgage Bank to enable it meet the housing needs of Nigerians.

Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing, Alhaji Mustapha Baba, who disclosed this on Monday in Jalingo, said that the measure would help the the bank to adequately cater for the rising mortgage finance needs of workers.

Baba spoke while inaugurating the ministerial pilot housing scheme project, financed by the Federal Mortgage Bank in the Taraba capital.

He commended the bank’s efforts toward meeting the challenge of housing deficit, in spite of the economic challenges facing the nation.

The minister urged workers to continue to contribute to the housing fund, adding that government would soon commence the construction of 5,000 housing units in each state of the federation, under the public-private partnership arrangement.

Gov. Darius Ishaku, in his remarks, said that the inauguration would reduce the housing needs of civil servants in Taraba.

Represented by his deputy, Alhaji Haruna Manu, Ishaku thanked the contractor for delivering a quality job.

He said that the state government was interested in working with the federal mortgage bank and the federal ministry of power, works and housing, toward building more houses for the people of the state.

“We are equally doing our best to meet the housing needs of the fast growing population, following the relocation of some people into the state, as a result of insurgency in some northeastern states.

“The state government has already acquired land to build 500 housing units in partnership with some development partners,” he said.

Earlier, National President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Mr Boboi Kaigama, had called on the state government to subsidise the cost of the houses for its workers.

He explained that civil servants could hardly afford the N7million pegged for a 3 bedroom semi-detached bungalow.

Kaigama also called on the federal ministry of power, works and housing to consider local government workers in the housing scheme of the federal government, so as to give them a sense of belonging.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inaugurated 202 housing estates has 24 one-bedroom Terrace going for N3.2m, 88 two-bedroom Bungalows at N5.6m, and 90 three-bedroom bungalows at N7million.

Champions League progress near impossible, says Neymar…See full details

Barcelona’s Brazil star Neymar says it will be a virtual ‘mission impossible’ for the Spanish giants to progress in the Champions League after their 4-0 first leg demolition by Paris Saint-Germain.

No team has ever come back from a 4-0 first leg deficit to remain in the Champions League and Barcelona are under no illusions about the mountain they will have to climb for the second leg of the last 16 clash at Camp Nou on March 8.

“Now we have to think about the return match and see what we can try to do to reverse this situation,” the Brazilian star told journalists.

“But it will be very difficult, practically impossible. However, we can’t give up.”

Barca were totally dominated during the game in which Angel di Maria scored twice alongside further goals from Julian Draxler and Edison Cavani in a match Barca coach Luis Enrique dubbed a disaster for the Spaniards.

Neymar poured praise on PSG and said that being hammered was unfamiliar to Barcelona’s galaxy of international stars.

“All credit to PSG,” he said. “This match was atypical, we are not in the habit of finding ourselves in this sort of situation.

“It will be very difficult to prepare for the return match, with a four-goal deficit. I don’t think this has ever happened to me.”

He said that Barcelona had not prepared well for the game but were still surprised by the punishment they had received.

“We were not good, we did not do our work as we should have done and we were surprised by this result,” he said.

The joint heaviest defeat in coach Enrique’s three seasons in charge means Barcelona face missing out on the quarter-finals for the first time since losing on away goals to Liverpool in the last 16 in 2006/07.

“It was a disastrous night for us in which we were clearly inferior,” Enrique acknowledged.

Neymar, Lionel Messi and teammates took part in a closed-door training session at Camp Nou earlier on Wednesday to wind down after the PSG defeat. A glum looking trio of Messi, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique were pictured on the club website taking part in the session.
