Government social intervention on poverty alleviation leaving citizens poorer (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2myNQ3L

A leadership consultant, Mr. Kriz David, has advocated effective and sustainable solution to tackle the myriad of challenges facing countries across Africa.

Speaking at the first edition of Leadership Foresight Workshop with the theme: “Leadership and Prosperity of Nations” in Lagos, he said the challenges confronting Africa cannot be solved in isolation.

Kriz, a proponent of Leadership and Prosperity of Nations, explained to the audience at the workshop that his model on Leadership & Prosperity of Nations is locked in a tripod, which are Faith-value system; Learning-productivity system and law- control system.

He stressed that leadership makes the difference between prosperous and poor nations. According to him, without system thinking and leadership, social interventions will become counterproductive.

Also, he lamented that despite the anti-corruption crusade across the continent, treasury looters are on the rise and increased policing is resulting in high rate of crime. For the agricultural policy to yield the desired result across the continent of Africa, Kriz argued that government must integrate Tax Policy, Funding Policy, Transportation Policy, Educational Policy, Industrial Policy and Trade Policy.

Guardiola faces FA Cup headache…See full details

Pep Guardiola faces a selection headache in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final at Middlesbrough as the Manchester City manager juggles the demands of competing for silverware on two fronts.

Guardiola must decide how many of City’s best players to risk for at the Riverside Stadium as they have a crucial Champions League last 16 second leg clash with Monaco four days later.

The FA Cup offers the more realistic prospect of Guardiola’s first trophy with City, but the Spaniard’s success in Europe was a key factor in the decision to bring him to Manchester last year.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss will find his skills tested to the limit in what is a defining week for City’s season.

His most recent attempt at squad rotation failed when Guardiola decided to start Wednesday’s Premier League home game against Stoke without his two best creative players.

David Silva was named as a substitute and Raheem Sterling was rested altogether as City drew 0-0, leaving them 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Guardiola has rested players for each of City’s FA Cup games so far, but there are signings that he is taking the competition more seriously the further he progresses.

Having made eight changes for their goalless fifth round tie at Huddersfield last month, he made only four for the replay, which City won 5-1.

Claudio Bravo, now the second-choice goalkeeper for league games, has come back in for the last two FA Cup ties and should play again at the Riverside Stadium, while full-back Pablo Zabaleta has also tended to be used in the competition.

Perhaps the biggest question revolves around Sergio Aguero.

The Argentina striker was demoted to the bench following the January arrival of Gabriel Jesus from Brazilian club Palmeiras.

– Indispensable –

Yet since Jesus broke his foot against Bournemouth on February 13, Aguero has proved indispensable.

He scored twice in 5-3 first leg win against Monaco, and is City’s best hope of the away goal they may well need in the principality to secure European progress.

Guardiola cannot afford an injury to the striker, and so may decide to field Kelechi Iheanacho against Middlesbrough instead.

City midfielder Yaya Toure hinted that there will be some changes on Saturday, saying: “We’ve got two games now where we need all the players.

“We have to try to do the business. Middlesbrough is going to be a tough, tough game.

“They’ve had a rest for a week. We’ll try to do our best. Of course, one trophy would be very welcome for us.”

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka insists he has the full backing of chairman Steve Gibson despite seeing his side drop into the relegation zone for the first time this season after a 10-game winless Premier League run.

Middlesbrough’s progress to the last eight of the Cup has helped to relieve the pressure on Karanka, who came under fire from sections of the club’s travelling support during the 2-0 defeat at Stoke, which stretched the Teessiders’ wait for a league victory beyond three months.

Karanka has held talks this week with Gibson and the Spaniard conceded: “The last two weeks have been really bad.”

Asked if he still has Gibson’s backing, he added: “Of course. I’ve spoken to the chairman since the weekend.

“We discussed the amazing opportunity we have to make it to Wembley by winning on Saturday. We know we have to be positive and believe in what we’re doing.

“The most difficult moment for me at this club was when I arrived three years ago and we lost three of the first four games.

“Back then he told me he had confidence in me and that was a big thing. He doesn’t have to tell me every day that he has confidence in me.

“I don’t really care what the critics say, because I’m my own biggest critic.”

Jimmy Prime – Humana Ft Donnie & Smoke Dawg [Mp3 + Lyrics]

http://ift.tt/2mNMeE3

Jimmy Prime’s last appearance came on a collaboration with another OVO affiliated rapper in Amir Obe. The Toronto native has now released his new single, “Faded,” a solo cut that was premiered on this past weekend’s episode of OVO Sound Radio.

“Faded” is a moody track that attempts to sense of many abstract drunken feelings. The woman in question feels that Prime only calls when he’s “Humana” Featuring Donnie & Smoke Dawg which might be true. He’s a buzzing rapper who’s in the studio 24/7, so one can expect him to be in said state of mind basically all the time. That doesn’t mean his feelings toward this particular girl aren’t real; in fact, they might be at their most powerful during the late-night hours, when he usually makes the call

Reps’ panel rues loss of N3 trillion yearly on high seas (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2k7owkb

• ‘Navy confiscates N420.1 billion worth of diesel in 2016’
• Nigeria, Portugal partner to establish ocean research institute

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Navy, Mr. Abdussamad Dasuki, has expressed concern over the loss of about N3 trillion yearly within the country’s territorial waters.

Dasuki, who spoke during the budget defence session of the Nigerian Navy (NN), noted that the amount, equivalent of about $10 billion, is lost yearly due to the inability of Navy personnel to discharge their duties effectively.

Acknowledging that the Navy plays a key strategic role in the economy, he assured that the committee would ensure adequate allocation for the NN in the 2017 budget to curtail the activities of economic saboteurs in Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, told the lawmakers that his outfit confiscated crude oil and illegally-refined diesel worth N420.1 billion in 2016.

The Naval chief, who was accompanied by scores of naval top brass, noted that the feat underlined the fact that the N2.512 billion overhead budgetary allocation to his outfit in the 2016 budget was well-utilised.

He said that with improved funding, the service would surely be able to enhance its operational profile while proactively tackling criminality in the nation’s maritime domain.

He disclosed that among the seized items were 810,725 metric tonnes of crude oil, 1,078,104 metric tonnes of seized illegally-refined diesel, destruction of 181 illegal refineries, 38 barges, 263 wooden boats and the arrest of 784 suspects within the period under review.

In another development, the Nigerian and Portuguese governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly establish the Atlantic International Research Institute for the study, exploration and management of the ocean resources.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, signed on behalf of Nigeria while Portuguese Minister of Science and Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Manuel Heitor, signed on behalf of Portugal.

According to Onu, the establishment of the research centre would help to build stronger relationship with Portugal in the area of science and technology, adding: “Utilising science and technology will create a lot of wealth and reduce poverty.”

Heitor said it is of importance to share knowledge to create a common future for humanity, adding that the institute would afford sharing of knowledge, not only between Portugal and Nigeria, but also among other countries of the world.

“There is need for institutional building, stronger higher education, incentives for both public and private sectors and international co-operation. We should look at the future in an open way,” he said.He added that the proposed research institute would also lead to south-south co-operation as well as co-operation with the north.

Protesters prevent Mimiko from presenting 2017 budget (Read full details)

Olusegun Mimiko

The Ondo State Assembly leadership crisis degenerated further yesterday as protesters prevented governor Olusegun Mimiko from presenting the 2017 budget.

Some youths, under the aegis of Coalition of Ondo State People, converged on the Assembly Complex along Igbatoro Road, Akure, to forestall the presentation.

The protesters, numbering about 200, swooped on the Assembly at around 7:00 a.m. carrying placards with various inscriptions and blocked the main road leading to the complex.

The leader of the coalition, Mr. Adelokiki Orimisan, alleged that Mimiko was trying to create a state of anarchy before his two-term tenure expires in less than three weeks.

According to Adelokiki, “Yesterday, we learnt that Mimiko was coming to present 2017 budget and influence the passage of 38 controversial bills.
“This is a total impunity which Ondo State youths will not tolerate,” he said.

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were also seen at the scene to join the protest, claiming that the budget presentation was intentionally pushed forward to cause problem for Rotimi Akeredolu. Some members of the PDP were also spotted at the complex.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, said that every Nigerian had the right to protest, stressing that the laws only frown against violent protest.

“They are doing it in a peaceful manner and police are not harassing nor molesting them. They are Nigerians and can express their grievance as long as it does not degenerate into violence and we don’t have anything against that.”

And while waiting for the governor to show up, as scheduled for noon, the 13 lawmakers loyal to the embattled Speaker, Ms. Jumoke Akindele, were nowhere in sight. The Guardian gathered that the 13 lawmakers loyal to the new leadership had a seven-minute plenary session presided over by the new speaker, Mr. Malachi Coker.

Suarez, Messi hand Barca Cup lead over Atletico…See full details

Wonder goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi left Barcelona with a 2-1 Copa del Rey semi-final, first leg advantage over Atletico Madrid to take back to the Camp Nou next week.

Suarez’s solo effort and a thunderous strike from Messi gave Barca a deserved commanding lead at half-time.

Yet, Atletico roared back after the break as Antoine Griezmann halved the arrears and the hosts went close to an equaliser as they piled on the pressure in the final stages.

However, Diego Simeone’s men were left to rue their slow start with Barca now favourites to make a fourth straight Cup final ahead of the second leg on February 7.

“It is normal that playing here at their home they would push us and they were much better in the second-half than the first,” said Suarez. “The didn’t have anything to lose. They risked a lot more and made us suffer a little.”

The honours have been split two apiece in the four previous two-legged ties between these sides in the past three seasons. Yet there was a gulf in class as Barca took control in the first 45 minutes.

It took just seven minutes for Suarez to open the scoring with his seventh goal in nine appearances against Atletico.

The Uruguayan ran half the length of the field, leaving Diego Godin and Stefan Savic in his wake, before slotting the ball home with the outside of his foot into the far corner.

Suarez should have had a second when he was played in by Neymar, but, inside of going for goal, the former Liverpool striker tried to return the ball to the Brazilian who couldn’t control.

Messi was the source of most of Barca’s best moves and sealed a scintillating first-half performance with a stunning finish for the second 12 minutes before half-time when he blasted home off the inside of the post from outside the box.

Atletico had offered precious little other than one effort from Koke that dipped onto the roof of the net before the break. However, the hosts were a team transformed after the break with Fernando Torres introduced alongside Griezmann up front.

“We spoke at half-time and I think in the second-half we got close to the team we have always been,” said Atletico boss Simeone. “I am left with that positive feeling. We were close to a draw, we fronted up against all the difficulties we faced in the first-half.”

Atletico were back in the tie just before the hour mark when a free-kick to the back post found Godin and his header across goal was turned home by Griezmann.

The French international had a glorious chance to then level moments later when he was picked out perfectly by Filipe Luis’s low cross. However, Griezmann’s effort was straight at Jasper Cillessen, who saved from point blank range.

Barca could have put the tie to bed with a third away goal as a Messi free-kick was brilliantly turned onto the bar by Miguel Angel Moya. Neymar then had a glorious chance as Messi again split the Atletico defence, but his careless finish flew miles over the bar with just Moya to beat.

Barca could and arguably should have been punished in the latter stages as Torres flicked another fine Luis cross inches wide. Torres also fired wide with a much better opening from the edge of the area before Griezmann rifled a thirty-yard strike inches past Cillessen’s far post.
