Older woman-younger man relationship

http://ift.tt/2lMP9xf

A young man in his late-20’s wrote me a few weeks back. He said that he is in a relationship with a much older lady that he is very fond of, claims that they are very compatible except that the age gap between them worries his woman. He then sought my advice on “older woman and younger man relationship”…since it is taken for granted in this clime that a man should be older than his bride-to-be.

Well, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a relationship scenario that involves a lady and a man that is biologically younger than her…if both can take it in their stride. But before one makes up his/her mind to go into such, it is assumed that those involved have weighed the pros and cons of their decisions.

This kind of relationship entails lots of courage and sacrifice. And all these you can find easy to live with if the fondness is genuine, but if the man is there because of what he can get from the lady (as is usually the case in most situations), it won’t work because the pretence can’t go on for long.

If this is what a couple genuinely wants-no obstacle should be insurmountable for them.

The only challenge I foresee is the guy waking up one day to suddenly realise that the woman he married is older than him and then he would start running after younger ladies-to the disrespect of his wife or the woman not having enough confidence in herself, such that any young (er) lady that comes around her husband is seen as a threat, so she becomes unbearably hostile or quarrelsome-to the discomfort of her man. These scenarios can bring about an unimaginable tension in a union and, if not properly managed, the union might be headed to the rocks. In fact, lots of confidence will be a bonus to the woman in such a union!

However, I am not comfortable with any age difference greater than a decade when it comes to an older woman, younger man relationship. One has to look at the reasons why any young man would want to date a woman that is so many years his senior.

It is not because such women are more experienced in bed, funnier, more confident, or well read. And certainly not because they have more supple, sexier or firmer bodies. It’s because a lot of such guys get an easy ride (indulgence) with the older ladies. They love the fact that such ladies are economically sorted out…there is probably a house, a car and a good job/business in the picture. Women their own age make demands, they want babies; they want the man to spend on them. But with older ladies, the ‘toy boys’ become complacent, secure in the knowledge that the older ladies are desperate to keep them and will do anything to that effect.

Thanks to the pursuit of careers in their younger years, by the time some women look up, a non-availability of ‘soul mates’ in their age bracket hits them and because some ladies are so hung on hankering after the sort of boys they would have dated as young adults, they go for much younger guys.

It’s just that a lot of women that embark on such ‘love ventures’ don’t do some sort of reality check. For example, when she is in her fifties, the guy is probably in his thirties or forties and can still ‘walk’…when he would have been financially independent but in all, it boils down to one’s happiness really. What’s the use of money without some happiness or comfort?

You ‘buy’ it, if that’s what it has to come down to!

Much as I believe everyone would prefer that a partner is with him/her for who he/she is and not really for what he/she brings to the table, the latter sounds more like a commercial venture. Unfortunately, that is the true colour of most relationship settings of this age.

Yes, we now ‘buy’ love (like everything else) in this age too.

Research claims that a marriage in which a woman is two or more years older than her husband is 53 per cent more likely to end in divorce than if the husband were three or more years older or only one year younger.

According to a recent study, wealth and ambition are the two favourite qualities that younger women want in a man, that is, they want a man who can afford to lavish them with expensive gestures. Younger women seem to want it all…looks, wealth, ambition and honesty- whilst older women value the more traditional traits such as kindness, humour and reliability.

On the ‘values’ of the latter category of women, I feel that when you have ‘seen it all’ in life…you tend to go with ‘what matters most’ in relationships.

Torrents of election violence and ebbing tide of democracy in Rivers State

http://ift.tt/2lWm7X1

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

More than any other state in the federation, the political intrigues that led to the unprecedented change of power in Aso Rock Villa, Nigeria’s seat of government on May 29, 2015, are taking their toll on Rivers State.

Months after the elections, when other parts of the country have moved on with the new realities, the gladiators in Rivers State are still at each other’s throat in their desperation to outwit one another thereby unleashing a deadly cycle of violence in the state.

While these political elephants, each with enormous weight of either federal or state influences behind it, continue their untiring and protracted wrestling for control of the people’s resources, the grass of democracy and its dividends suffer under their mindless stomping.

Like Lagos in the West and Kano in the North, the stakes are quite high in Rivers because of the state’s capacity to deliver mega votes, a highly conscious electorate and volatile political environment that has a lot of influence on national direction, making it one of the tripods of the country’s regional voting strengths.

In the cut-throat intrigues and struggle for political power that have gripped the state in the last three years, alliances and loyalties have been broken and quite a number of the characters in the macabre drama have been labeled traitors because of their antics to place self far above the collective interests of the people.

As the power tussle continues, the creeks are turning red with the blood of scores of victims, including security operatives deployed to ensure peace, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) engaged to conduct elections, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and members of the opposition camps.

To underscore the extent to which the beast in man has taken over his mind, some of the victims were beheaded or killed in other blood-cuddling ways, painting a new picture of Rivers as a state peopled by desperate politicians who would stop at nothing to have their way.

Sources put the number of those killed in the recurrent mayhem at over 500 since the crisis began while a thousand others have sustained various degrees of injuries. The loss in property is in billions of naira.

At every voting exercise, of which there have been several in recent times, more than in any state of the federation because of the inconclusive nature of the elections, armed hoodlums, at the behest of their sponsors always unleashed an orgy of violence on the citizenry causing socio-economic disruptions in a state that contribute substantially to the national economy.

Of course, characteristic of politicians, each camp has been blaming the other for the mayhem. When during the preparation for the rerun elections last year, three soldiers, including an officer with the rank of Major were killed by unknown gunmen in Abonemma, Akuku-Toru local council, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led state government blamed the All Progressive Congress (APC).

A statement by the State Commissioner of Information, Austin Tam-George said “we strongly believe that APC-sponsored cultists may be behind the killing of these soldiers in their ugly plot to pitch innocent Rivers communities against the military.”

But the APC, reacting through its governorship candidate in 2015 elections, Dakuku Peterside, who is now the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), blamed the killings on what he called provocative statements by the state governor, who he also alleged “was camping 3,000 boys in the area of the attack on the soldiers.”

While each party is pointing accusing fingers at each other, attempts at getting to the roots of the crisis and ending it have proved generally unsuccessful. Last year, President Muhammadu Buhari pledged to end the spate of violence in the state saying, “We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have given the security services clear directives in this regard. We will show that violence in any form will no longer be tolerated before, during or after elections.”

In the same vein, the House of Representatives once directed its Committee on Justice and Judiciary to investigate all the issues of election infractions that caused the tempers to boil over and expressed worry about the grave situation that portends great danger for the country’s democracy.

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi

And in its attempt to investigate the crisis and identify the perpetrators, the Police High Command, which had earlier dismissed six of its men attached to Wike for engaging in “illegal duties,” set up an investigative panel that indicted some unnamed INEC officials for allegedly collecting over a hundred million naira from the governor to subvert the electoral process.

The Rivers State government, not wanting to be outdone in the game of buck-passing that has become another name for the various investigations into the crisis, accused the police of being instrument in the hands of the Federal Government to “intimidate Rivers’ people.”

Because these efforts to calm the tempest and stop the carnage have so far been self-serving and only attempted to find scapegoats, the warring parties continue to dig further into the trenches and violence persist unabated with armed cultists roaming the state to wreak havoc.

Only a fortnight ago, during the conduct of the rescheduled elections into national and state legislative seats of Etche constituency, the hand of a staff of INEC was chopped off by suspected hoodlums in another of the bizarre incidents in the oil-rich state.

A bitter rivalry
From 2007 when Rotimi Amaechi, the current Minister of Transportation defied his benefactor, former governor Peter Odili to emerge as the governor, to the last gubernatorial election when he was paid back in the same coin by incumbent governor, Nyesom Wike, the Rivers political debacle has been revolving around individuals whose relationship to each other and the polity is cast in the mould of treachery and unbridled ambition bordering on selfish control of the commonwealth.

Without minding the effects on the generality of the people whose interests they claimed to be protecting, the crisis in Rivers has been reduced to a supremacy tussle between Amaechi and Wike and the duo, heading rival groups, have so far been implacable.

This bitter rivalry among players in the state’s political field is traceable to the intrigues that culminated in Nigeria’s first major power change when Rivers State became a factor in the emergence of new power blocs in the national horizon.

The state became the hotbed of national politics and a gauge to measure the country’s political temperature which was then almost at boiling point making political analysts, including foreign ones, to predict that the approaching election may well be the cause of Nigeria’s final disintegration.

Before this, political normalcy took a flight from the state in mid-2013 following a crack that appeared on the wall of the ruling PDP over the removal of the state chairman, Godspower Ake, causing frosty relationship among supporters of Amaechi, the then governor, and Wike, his former aide who was the Minister of State for Education.

The Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), of which Amaechi was chairman, was then being turned into a potent instrument by a focused opposition against the administration of Goodluck Jonathan in the grand plan to prevent the incumbent from securing a second term.
With an ally in Amaechi, who later became a pillar in the opposition camp’s formation of the APC, an amalgam of politicians across political parties desirous of chasing the ruling PDP away, the battle was taken to Jonathan’s backyard.

Swimming against the current
In joining the opposition, Amaechi, a two-term Speaker of the House of Assembly on the verge of completing a second term as governor, was swimming against the current in a state that gave the highest number of votes to Jonathan in the 2011 presidential elections.

This expectedly had its consequences and Amaechi had many tales of woes, including withdrawal of security guards, curtailment of movement, alienation from the presidency and several state-backed attempts at impeachment, to tell.

Indeed, the configuration of the politics of Rivers State, which was and still is solidly based on the sentiments of the people for Jonathan making them to see anything against the former president as an affront against their sensibilities, is proving too much for an Amaechi to surmount. But like a determined power broker that he is, even while almost dressed in the garb of a Brutus to his peoples’ collective aspiration, the former governor is not relenting.

His tenure (between 2007 and 2015) ended on a not so palatable note. For close to two years, the state’s judiciary and legislature were under key and lock and he had operated more like a sole administrator. Coupled with his open quarrel with Jonathan and his wife, Patience, Amaechi and his APC team in Rivers State had entered the 2015 electoral contest with a heavy baggage.

Stripped bare, the choice of the people was not so much between contestants from both parties (the PDP and APC) in the 2015 general elections but between Jonathan and Amaechi. The people naturally would go for the former. This is the point the APC establishment in Abuja has not come to terms with hence perhaps the endless push to reverse the PDP electoral gains in the state.

The foundation of today’s carnage and political unrest was laid during the period with news of fracas among lawmakers in their hallowed chambers, take-over of the state legislature by the National Assembly and clashes of cult members loyal to the two political divides making the headlines.

Building on this massive support for Jonathan’s second term bid by the people of the South-South geo-political zone, of which Rivers State is the melting pot, and of course with support from Abuja, it was easy for Wike to become the centre of another power base in the state.

This was consolidated with a 87.77 percent win in the April 11, 2015 governorship contest with Peterside of the APC during which the PDP swept the House of Assembly seats. Two weeks earlier on March 28, the party also won all the three Senatorial seats as well as the 13 seats in the House of Representatives.

Although Peterside, citing violence, outright rigging, voter intimidation, official collusion and other electoral malpractices as reasons for his request, lost the bid to have the governorship elections cancelled at the apex court, the judiciary upturned PDP’s victory in the senatorial seats, 11 in the House of Representative and 22 out of the 32 seats in the House of Assembly in the stream of litigations that followed the exercise.

Reversal of roles
With Amaechi’s appointment as a member of the Federal Cabinet in Abuja’s new dispensation despite strident opposition from “his people” including the three Senators from Rivers State and Wike’s confirmation, through the January 27, 2016 Supreme Court verdict, as the governor of the state, a new cycle of the protracted crisis, with the two gladiators swapping positions and power bases, commenced.

Like before, the battle line was drawn between Abuja and Port Harcourt but with reversal of roles for the leading gladiators as the warring camps sought to use whatever influence they can muster within the system to outdo each other.

The rescheduled election of March 19, 2016 proved to be the first test of strength between the two forces with Amaechi allegedly flooding the state with soldiers to intimidate opposition elements and Wike, unsparing in his efforts to deploy state resources and the popularity of the PDP, to ward off the “invasion”.

Few days to the exercise, Amaechi in a statement that confirmed allegations that security forces have been compromised along partisan lines, told APC supporters in Etche and Gokana councils that soldiers would be deployed in the election because the state governor had bought the conscience of the police. He reportedly said, “The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State has failed. So anywhere you see the military on Saturday, know that the police have failed.”

What followed were alleged massive clampdown on the opposition prompting the state government and the PDP to petition international bodies and foreign governments on the threats to democracy in Nigeria urging them “to urgently initiate and maintain diplomatic pressure on the Federal Government to allow a free, fair and violence-free election in Rivers State.”

At the end of the exercise that proved to be bloodier than any election ever conducted in Nigeria, another usage was found for INEC’s new lexicon for aborting the voting process. The poll was declared inconclusive in the 8 local councils of Khana, Bonny, Gokana, Andoni, Tai, Eleme, Etche and Asari-Toku.

While announcing the suspension, INEC said the conduct of the exercise in the councils was greatly marred by such violence and irregularities that cannot make the election stand the test of a credible exercise.
According to the commission, “There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others.

“Several permanent and ad hoc staff engaged have been attacked, again resulting in fatalities, while some have been forcibly abducted and taken to presently unknown destinations. Under such difficult circumstance, the Returning Officers were only able to collate and declare results in one Federal and nine State constituencies.”
Although Amaechi’s APC was able to secure the Rivers South East Senatorial seat for Magnus Abe in another round of rerun elections held in December last year, the cost in human and material was huge on the polity as the exercise, like the ones before it, was also held in an atmosphere of insecurity.

And the losers are….
A week to the first in the series of the rerun elections, Amaechi, to confirm that the lingering power tussle between him and Wike is more of personal pride, told the people of Rivers State “to please, remove shame from my eyes by voting APC next Saturday.”
While their supporters are losing lives and limbs, the gladiators in the crisis that is disrupting socio-political and economic development of Rivers State only measure their loss in terms of bruised egos that have been masked as the collective will of a people that desire dividends of democracy.

Apart from the monetary cost of conducting endless elections by INEC and all relevant authorities including security agencies and monitoring bodies running into billions of naira, the effect on the psyche of the average Rivers State indigene, in terms of anxiety, trepidation and social disturbance cannot be quantified.

Before and during the conduct of these elections, the state is always locked down with state and self-imposed restrictions on the people with negative consequences on the economy and social interactions.

With a troubled government that could not focus on development because of these distractions, the people of Rivers State are on the receiving end of the stick while united leadership continues to elude them.

When the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo visited the state two weeks ago to discuss development issues, the crack in the political leadership was on display as he had to hold separate meetings with Governor Wike at the Government House and another one with Amaechi and his APC followers at the party secretariat. The ability of the people to speak with one voice has been lost.

But by far the greatest loser in the protracted crisis is the institution of democracy, which main pillars, election and representation, face direct assaults from the warring groups who engage in the game to frustrate quality representation through compromised voting processes.

For the better part of the current term, the people of Rivers State had no legislative voice at federal and state levels, denying them an important ingredient of representative government crucial for a people to demand for what is rightly theirs in a multi-region structure that Nigeria is and constituting a clog in the wheel of effective running of government at the state level.

With the approaching mid-term appraisal of the Wike administration, it is time for the gladiators in the two power bases of Abuja and Port Harcourt to spare a thought for the state by sheathing their swords and allowing the people to enjoy the fruits of democracy.

Saraki seeks efficient healthcare services in Nigeria

http://ift.tt/2miKMtA

Bukola Saraki

Commissions Hospital Built By Senator In Yobe

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, yesterday, urged the federal, states and local governments to ensure efficiency in all healthcare facilities across the country for the benefit of the masses.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, Saraki made the call during the commissioning and handing over of an 80-bed hospital built by Senator Hassan Mohammed and donated to the Federal Government in Potiskum,  Yobe State.

The Senate President noted that with the hospital, the residents of Potiskum would no longer need to travel to neighbouring states for treatment.
He said: “This is why I committed to helping Senator Mohammad with getting the support of the Federal Government in the running of this hospital, so that its benefits to the people of Potiskum and Yobe are guaranteed and sustained.

“This is the kind of leaders we find today in the Nigerian Senate; people who are abandoning the practice of yesterday’s politics. It must be strongly lauded that this is a PDP Senator, in an APC-led state, donating this edifice to an APC government.

“I implore the Ministry of Health to ensure the hospital continues to receive priority attention, both in management and in resources. I expect that this facility will be run with the highest degree of efficiency possible; and to the good people of Potiskum, I encourage you to use the hospital and demand efficiency in service from the management,” he said.

Google rolls out AI tool to combat online trolls

http://ift.tt/2lTCEiu

Google said it will begin offering media groups an artificial intelligence tool designed to stamp out incendiary comments on their websites.

The programming tool, called Perspective, aims to assist editors trying to moderate discussions by filtering out abusive “troll” comments, which Google says can stymie smart online discussions.

“Seventy-two percent of American internet users have witnessed harassment online and nearly half have personally experienced it,” said Jared Cohen, president of Google’s Jigsaw technology incubator.

“Almost a third self-censor what they post online for fear of retribution,” he added in a blog post on Thursday titled “When computers learn to swear”.

Perspective is an application programming interface (API), or set of methods for facilitating communication between systems and devices, that uses machine learning to rate how comments might be regarded by other users.

The system, which will be provided free to media groups including social media sites, is being tested by The Economist, The Guardian, The New York Times and Wikipedia.

Many news organisations have closed down their comments sections for lack of sufficient human resources to monitor the postings for abusive content.

“We hope we can help improve conversations online,” Cohen said.

Google has been testing the tool since September with The New York Times, which wanted to find a way to maintain a “civil and thoughtful” atmosphere in reader comment sections.

Perspective’s initial task is to spot toxic language in English, but Cohen said the goal was to build tools for other languages, and which could identify when comments are “unsubstantial or off-topic”.

Twitter said earlier this month that it too would start rooting out hateful messages, which are often anonymous, by identifying the authors and prohibiting them from opening new accounts, or hiding them from internet searches.

Last year, Google, Twitter, Facebook and Microsoft signed a “code of good conduct” with the European Commission, pledging to examine most abusive content signalled by users within 24 hours.

‘Ring of fire’ eclipse treat for southern skygazers

http://ift.tt/2l9QhWz

(FILES) This file photo taken on May 20, 2012 shows a "ring of fire" annular solar eclipse in Kanarraville, Utah. A spectacular "ring of fire" solar eclipse on February 26, 2017 will regale skygazers in South America and southern Africa, with seafarers in the nearby Atlantic getting a front-row view too, astronomers say. The eclipse — during which the Sun will all but disappear as the Moon crosses its path — will be most visible in a 100-kilometre (62-mile) band cutting through Chile, Argentina, Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.<br />ROBYN BECK / AFP

A spectacular “ring of fire” solar eclipse Sunday will regale skygazers in South America and southern Africa, with seafarers in the nearby Atlantic getting a front-row view too, astronomers say.

The eclipse — during which the Sun will all but disappear as the Moon crosses its path — will be most visible in a 100-kilometre (62-mile) band cutting through Chile, Argentina, Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A so-called annular solar eclipse occurs when the Earth, Moon and Sun line up. But even when perfectly aligned, the Moon is too far from Earth to completely block out the Sun, creating instead the impression of a fiery ring.

At first, it will look as if a “bite” has been taken out of the Sun, said Terry Moseley of the Irish Astronomical Association, stressing that viewers should not observe the eclipse unfold with the naked eye.

“This ‘bite’ gradually gets bigger and bigger as the Moon — which is itself invisible — moves further and further in front of the Sun,” he told AFP.

“As about 90 percent of the Sun is covered, you’ll notice a distinct drop in temperature and brightness, and a change in the quality of the light which is hard to describe.”

As the day darkens, birds and animals may enter a night-time routine, thinking sunset is nigh.

At the height of the eclipse the Moon will be right in the middle of the Sun, leaving “a perfect, beautiful, symmetrical ring” of light around the edge before exiting on the other side, said Moseley.

For people just outside the band of optimal viewing, the phenomenon will appear as a ring thicker on one side than the other, said Moseley — “not symmetrical, but still an amazing sight.”

– Cloud-free? –
Anyone further afield will see little or nothing.

It will take about two hours for the Moon to move across the face of the Sun, but the “ring of fire” peak will last a mere minute.

Starting in the southeast Pacific Ocean at sunrise, the eclipse will hit solid land at 1221 GMT in southern Chile, near the town of Coyhaique, then cut through Argentina — near Camarones Bay on the eastern coast — before hitting the South Atlantic.

At sea, the eclipse peak will last 44 seconds and “only be visible to any ships that happen to be in the right place at the right time,” said Moseley.

It will reach Angola south of the town of Benguela around 1515 GMT, then move to Zambia and DR Congo just before the Sun sets and the light show ends.

According to the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA), the eclipse can be safely observed using a basic pinhole projector.

Punch a tiny hole in a piece of paper with a sharp pencil, hold it into the Sun, and project the image onto a second sheet.

The gaps between tree leaves make for a similar effect on the ground, says the ASSA website, calling this “the coolest and safest way to watch a solar eclipse”.

To look at the Sun directly, one would need special glasses.

Weather is the only potential spoiler.

NASA’s eclipse website recommends watching the weather forecast a day or two before the eclipse, and picking somewhere with a cloud-free prediction.

“Good weather is the key to successful eclipse viewing — better to see a shorter eclipse from clear sky that a longer eclipse under clouds,” it says.

Why I attended Akeredolu’s inauguration, by Fayose

http://ift.tt/2kCBhU8

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday in Akure said the welfare and unity of Yoruba people were important for anybody to play politics with.

The governor said this was the major reason why he attended the inauguration of Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) as the governor of Ondo State, adding that being a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), should not stop him from attending the inauguration of an All Progressives Congress (APC) governor.

Fayose said such an occasion was a national one that well-meaning people should identify with. “This is a Nigerian affair. When a governor is sworn in, we have to support him.‎ We are talking of regional integration and unity and Akeredolu is one of us.‎ We have to support him and electioneering has come and gone and a winner has emerged and we have to work together in the spirit of the people of our region.

“We cannot play politics with the welfare of the people of our region. We have to support Akeredolu to make the difference.‎ This is a matter of the Yoruba nation and after Nigeria, Yoruba nation comes first. We don’t need to play politics with the welfare of Yoruba people,” he said.

On whether he is planning to join the APC, the governor said nothing of such was in the offing. “I am the main issue of the APC. They don’t have my size. They are wearing babaringa and they don’t have the size of my cloth. The other time we gave them 16-0 and this time around, if it is possible to get a local government from another state, we will give them 17-0‎ in the 2018 governorship election,” he added.

Lagos Airport: We need to quickly correct things, says Osinbajo

http://ift.tt/2lFmqY1

Nigeria's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo

Barely few days after the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) adopted a 60-day Action Plan to push Ease of Doing Business reforms in the country, Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, paid a surprise visit to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, declaring an urgent task to correct many of the problems already identified by the council.

A statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, in Abuja yesterday quoted Osinbajo as saying the over one hour visit was in line with the work of PEBEC.

According to him: “As part of our work on the Ease of Doing Business, on making the environment friendly, not just for local businesses, but also for those who want to come and do business in Nigeria, the airport obviously is one of the major places where we need to ensure that facilities are working and that things are being run properly.

“So, we have looked around, we have seen some of the equipment. There are many things that need to be done, many things that need to be corrected, and we have to work on them as quickly as possible.”

During the unscheduled visit, the Acting President checked out the toilets and observed some of the non-functioning carousels in the Arrival Hall, went to Immigration officials to check the progress of plans to grant visa on arrivals to foreign investors, observed the non-functioning air-conditioners and chillers in the Departure and Arrival Halls, the escalators and elevators that are in a state of disrepair, among several others.

He was accompanied by the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika. Specifically, at Tuesday’s meeting of PEBEC in Abuja, Osinbajo said” “We are trying to improve the business environment in three broad respects- the entry and exit of goods, entry and exit of persons into Nigeria and general government transparency and efficiency in government agencies and parastatals.”

28 political parties want Obiano impeached

http://ift.tt/2lFgBtB

Willie Obiano

Twenty-eight political parties in Anambra State, under the umbrella of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), yesterday joined the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Ken Emeakayi, in calling for the impeachment of Governor Willie Obiano for alleged violation of the constitution.

Emeakayi had last week accused Obiano of going on vacation for over 30 days without transmitting any letter to the state House of Assembly to empower his Deputy to perform his functions, or stating his return.

The parties also alleged plans by Obiano to appoint caretaker committee chairmen for the 21 councils, rather than conducting council polls, which is also against the constitution.

Rising from a general meeting yesterday in Awka, 28 members of IPAC, in a letter addressed to the state Director of DSS, threatened to occupy the Assembly if the lawmakers failed to investigate the alleged breach of the country’s constitution by the governor.

In the letter, the state publicity secretary of IPAC, who is also the state Chairman of National Conscience Party (NCP), Mr. Peter Okala, warned that the governor and members of the Assembly would be held responsible for any breach of the peace, breakdown of law and order in the state.

IPAC gave the Assembly a five-day notice within which “to direct or cause to be directed, investigation into the unlawful activities of the governor.”

Judge withdraws from Adegboruwa’s rrial

http://ift.tt/2lFgj5I

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa

…As EFCC Drops Charges Against Ex-NIMASA Director’s Aide

A Federal High Court judge, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyibo handling the trial of activist-lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has withdrawn from the case.
The judge said she would return the case file to the Chief Judge, Justice Ibrahim Auta, for re-assignment to a new judge.

Justice Oguntoyibo said she was withdrawing from the case for personal reasons. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Adegboruwa May 12, 2016, for allegedly dealing in a seized property.

Out of nine witnesses listed to testify, EFCC has called two. The trial was billed to resume yesterday, but the judge gave no reasons as to why she was withdrawing.

The human rights lawyer was charged under Section 32 (1) of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004. Adegboruwa and Jonathan Udeagbala, said to be at large, committed the alleged offence on August 13, 2013 in Lagos. The defendant allegedly conspired to lease the property at House 105, NICON Town Estate, Lekki.

Adegboruwa allegedly leased the property to Shelf Drilling Nigeria Limited for N61, 631,944.65, which were credited to his Zenith Bank account, with number 1010240758. The lawyer pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In related news, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday withdrew charges against four persons arraigned alongside a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick Akpobolokemi before the Federal High Court, Lagos.

The four persons are erstwhile Special Advisers to Executive Director of the agency, Maritime Safety and Shipping who was the sixth accused, Governor Juan, Ugo Frederick, Timi Alari, and Penniel Engineering Services Limited.

Die-hard fans of Haruki Murakami, the Japanese author perennially pegged as a contender for the Nobel literature prize, flocked to bookstores Thursday night to scoop up his new novel.

Major bookstores hosted late-night events and stayed open through the early hours to celebrate the release at midnight (1500 GMT) of the hotly anticipated “Killing Commendatore”.

“I’ve been so excited about this book, I’m going to read as much as I can tonight, on the train home and as long as I can stay awake,” said Taira Shibasaki, a young worker who was one of the first to get hold of the novel’s two volumes.

During the countdown to midnight dozens of fans waited in single file outside the flagship branch of the Kinokuniya bookstore chain in Tokyo’s bustling Shinjuku neighbourhood.

“I’m a big reader and I plan to read the book tonight so I can post what I think on Twitter,” said Mohoko Aoyagi, a young female fan. “I’m sure there are lots of others who will do the same.”

Translated into some 40 languages, many of Murakami’s books conjure up a fantastical world where giant frogs challenge salarymen in battle and mackerel rain down from the sky. In others, the magic is replaced by realism.

But details of his latest novel were kept under wraps before the launch, adding to the anticipation among Murakami’s devotees, known as “Harukists”.

“The author told us he wants readers to discover it (the book) without knowing anything beforehand and that’s why we decided not to say anything until the publication. Even internally, very few people had access to it,” a spokesman for the book’s publisher Shinchosha told AFP.

– ‘A very strange story’ –

For years, international media, scholars and book lovers have listed the 68-year-old as a favourites for the Nobel, though the coveted prize has so far eluded him.

Shinchosha has already printed a combined 1.3 million copies of the two-volume, 2000-page Japanese-language work in anticipation of brisk sales. No timetable for translations has been announced yet.

“It’s a longer novel than ‘Kafka on the Shore’ but shorter than ‘IQ84’ and it’s a very strange story,” Murakami said of the book during a recent prize award in Denmark, according to his publicists.

Public broadcaster NHK was set to air a programme two hours before the book’s release to discuss “the Haruki Murakami phenomenon”.

“The excitement of eager fans, the Harukists, is reaching a fevered pitch as they engage in guesswork about the book they have yet to see,” NHK said earlier on its web site.

Murakami became a global sensation with the publication of “Norwegian Wood” in 1987 and has written several bestsellers including “1Q84” and “Kafka on the Shore”.

He is known to guard his privacy, rarely appearing in public, and has acquired a cult following for his intricately crafted tales of the absurdity and loneliness of modern life.

The novelist peppers his work with references to pop culture.

His enormous global popularity has led some at home to deride his work as being too cerebral and influenced by Western authors.

Shah Rukh Khan isn’t called the king of romance for no reason. Women across generations fall in love with the superstar, and it’s for very good reason: he knows just the right things to do, and say, to make people feel special. He did that yet again on Valentine’s Day, when he gave all his female employees some spectacular gifts.

According to DNA, every girl on his team received roses, a designer handbag and an expensive smartphone. SRK apparently picked these gifts out himself, as many of the ladies on his team have been with him for years. It seems that the girls walked in to the office on Valentine’s Day to find the gifts laid out for them, and were quite emotional about the gesture.

Time to send in your resumes to Red Chillies, ladies!

Disha Patani attended the Filmfare awards last month in a black Nicolas Jebran gown, and while there were many who thought she rocked the outfit, quite a few people took to the comments to call her out for “showing too much skin”.

These comments seem to have escalated over the last week, after the telecast of the awards, and now Disha has lashed out. In a message posted on her Instagram, she tells people to “stop the hypocrisy”, “open their mind” and “start accepting that we are not going to be anybody’s idea of an ‘Indian girl’”.
