China urges US, North Korea steps to avoid ‘head-on collision’…Read full details

North Korea leader Kim Jong-Un, who at the time declared his country had the ability to strike Seoul and the US whenever it pleased.

China on Wednesday called on North Korea to suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for the US and South Korea halting military wargames, to avoid what it called a “head-on collision.”

“To defuse the looming crisis on the (Korean) peninsula, China proposes that as a first step, the DPRK may suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for the halt of the large-scale US-ROK exercises,” Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, using the acronyms for the two Koreas.

“The two sides are like two accelerating trains coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way,” Wang said at a press conference on the sidelines of China’s annual parliament session.

“The question is: are the two sides really ready for a head-on collision? Our priority now is to flash the red light and apply the brakes on both trains.”

A cascade of events have led to a dramatic spike in tensions in northeast Asia.

Pyongyang blasted at least four missiles across the ocean toward Japan on Monday, and three of the rockets splashed down into waters within Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

Seoul and Washington have begun annual joint military exercises that always infuriate Pyongyang, and the US has said it has started deploying an anti-missile system directed at North Korea but which Beijing has taken as a threat to its own defence interests.

“This ‘suspension for suspension’ can help us break out of the security dilemma and bring the parties back to the negotiating table,” Wang said of his proposal.

Rishi Kapoor
We told you yesterday about how Rishi Kapoor has been sending direct messages to people and abusing them on Twitter. While the actor is known to be vocal of his opinions via social media, this was completely unheard of and took us all by surprise. In an interview with Pinkvilla, he spoke about why he does this. PS – He doesn’t take trolls lightly.

Yes, I don’t deny those accusations. You don’t mess with me. I am not amongst those to allow such bullshit. You bloody don’t like me? Unfollow me. But you try and mess with me, I will hit you below the belt and screw you. Main Pagal toh nahi hoon ki unnecessarily kisiko bhi abuse karunga? Kuch toh kia hoga na aapne?

He added,

These buggers deserve this. I am a daring bugger, if you mess with me I will not leave you. I have decided to not do it openly but if they write shit to me, I abuse them via DM and block them.

Umm, okay. What are your thoughts?

Speak with me to prove you are healthy, Fayose tells Buhari (Read full details)

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to speak with him on phone to convince Nigerians that he is hale and hearty.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi yesterday, Fayose disputed reports that Buhari had spoken in one week, first with the king of Morocco and next with the president of the African Union.

According to Fayose, the president should call him instead of speaking with “outsiders to convince Nigerians of his health status.” He said: “I advise the president to speak with me for the purpose of convincing Nigerians that he is hale and hearty instead of looking for people outside the country to convince Nigerians.”

“If their problem is that they are looking for a credible person who can help them convince Nigerians that all is well with our president, Ayo Fayose is their best bet. Let the president speak with me. If I tell Nigerians that the president spoke with me, Nigerians will believe,” he said.

Nigerians, he said, are getting suspicious of all the purported visits to Buhari in London, as well as his orchestrated telephone conversations with international figures who Nigerians cannot trust to give a true and unbiased report about the president’s state of health.

“Since they are eager for the president to speak to people, believing this is the way to convince Nigerians that their President is hale and hearty, let President Buhari talk to me. I can be reached on 08035024994. I am credible and Nigerians will believe me,” he said.

“They said he spoke to President Donald Trump; despite the hype, Nigerians were skeptical. Then they said he spoke to the king of Morocco; again, Nigerians were suspicious. Before we recovered from that, it is now the AU president that they said President Buhari spoke to.

Fayose maintained: “A president that can speak with outsiders should be able to whisper or wave to his own people.

Marginalisation of Igbo cause of agitation for Biafra, says Ohanaeze Ndigbo (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2kobhxk

Biafra agitators

The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, has said that the marginalisation of the region by successive administrations necessitated agitation by the youths for a sovereign state of Biafra.

Speaking at the forum of leaders of the South-South and South-East geo-political zones at the weekend, Nwodo noted that he aspired for a country where every part would be fully involved and the future generation would have a better country than the present generation.

“Our children are agitating. Our children do not want to be part of this country anymore because they feel that we are second-class citizens and because they feel that their parents are incapable of standing out for them.

“They want the Republic of Biafra because most of them feel they are discriminated against and are not equal with others,” he said. He, however, noted that the country was better as one, as the impact of war on any country can never be over-emphasised

“We think that in the African continent, our size is our asset. We have built a brotherhood over the years since 1960 and we cannot break. “Consequently, we have to put our heads together and find a better federal structure, a constitutional structure, which gives every part of this country satisfaction. In weeks and few months to come, the socio-cultural organisations will come together to seek an end to this impending catastrophe,” he stated.

Host of the meeting, an elder statesman and Ijaw National Leader, Chief Edwin Clark, canvassed for an egalitarian society where everyone would be equal because the country belongs to everyone.

“We are far away from the kind of country our founding-fathers bequeathed to us. At independence in 1960, the Richard’s Constitution spelt out what Nigeria should be – a Federal Republic with three regions – North, East and West as the components. Each of the regions is equal and each is allowed to develop at its own pace. But today, the reverse is the case,” he said.

We have no hand in APDP registration, says Makarfi’s PDP faction (Read full details)

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and PDP Factional Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi at PDP NEC Meeting.

• ADP denies report of link to party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Ahmed Makarfi has said that it had no hands in the bid for the registration of another party called Advanced Peoples Democratic Party (APDP).

Its spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, said yesterday that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP wishes to deny in its entirety, the news item, which went viral last Thursday that the committee or any of its members as individuals, are leading a plan to abandon the party structure for the Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff led group and seek registration of a new party to be called Advanced Peoples Democratic Party (APDP).

According to Adeyeye, “We state clearly and without ambiguity that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP is not in anyway involved in the plans to register any party by the name APDP or any other party for that matter.”

The faction said, “It is unthinkable that the National Caretaker Committee, which without any doubt, enjoys the support of all the recognised organs of the party will contemplate such a move.

In a related development, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) yesterday dismissed reports that disgruntled members of the PDP formed the new party. Reacting to a newspaper report that described them as disgruntled, the Assistant National Secretary South South zone of the ADP, Tony Okonji told
The Guardian yesterday that members of the new party were patriotic Nigerians, who believed the PDP has not fared well in running the affairs of the country when it was in power and has left to team up with their like minds from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and others to form the new party.

The Edo State chapter of the ADP was launched last Thursday in Benin City where the leader of the party, former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie said the party would adopt an all-inclusive process of picking candidates for elections through direct primaries.

Meanwhile, former governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada has said those bent on ensuring PDP is annihilated do not mean well for the country’s democracy. Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja at the weekend, Wada noted that the party had come to stay in the country.

Court admits statement implicating CCT boss in N10m bribe allegation (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2m9N9fc

Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Mr. Danladi Yakubu Umar

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory has ruled that a statement implicating the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Mr. Danladi Yakubu Umar, in a N10 million bribery case was freely made by his Personal Assistant and Protocol Officer, Ali Gambo Abdullahi.

The court therefore dismissed the claim by Abdullahi that the implicating statement he made in 2013 was done under duress and inducement from the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Abdullahi’s denial of his first statement made on August 12, 2013 on the bribery case prompted a trial within trial by Justice Orji to determine his claim of duress before admitting the statement in evidence as exhibit.

Abdullahi had been invited by EFCC following a petition by a retired Deputy Customs Comptroller, Mr. Rasheed Taiwo Owolabi, that he channeled the bribe through the defendant to the CCT boss.

Abdullahi said the CCT chairman met severally in his chamber the accused person, Owolabi, who was standing trial before the court on false assets declaration charges.

Justice Orji described as an afterthought, the claim by Abdullahi that he acted under coercion and fixed March 27 for continuation of trial of the defendant.

First sickle cell patient ‘cured’ with gene therapy (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2l1QJpD

sickle cell

360m people with disabling hearing loss, says WHO

For the first time, a 13-year-old patient has been ‘cured’ of sickle cell anaemia after gene therapy allowed complete remission of clinical symptoms of disease and correction of biological signs.

Gene therapy is the introduction of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to correct genetic disorders. The result of the study published yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine is quite significant since Nigeria has the highest prevalence of sickle cell disease in the world with over 40 million Nigerians carrying the genes.

It is believed that when the gene therapy is fully deployed, the patients would no longer have to battle recurrent pain and complications caused by the disease, which could interfere with many aspects of the patient’s life, including education, employment and psychosocial development.

A team led by Pr. Marina Cavazzana conducted at Necker Children’s Hospital, AP-HP and the Imagine Institute (AP-HP / Inserm / Université Paris Descartes) in October 2014 gene therapy in the context of a phase I clinical trial / II in a 13-year old patient with severe sickle cell disease.

Conducted in collaboration with Pr. Philippe Leboulch (CEA / University Faculties of Medicine of Paris-Sud and Harvard University) who developed the innovative treatment, vector used and directed the preclinical studies.

Scientists had in September 2016 reported that gene therapy for sickle cell disease passed key preclinical test. Researchers from Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Centre, United States (U.S.), had reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation that a precision-engineered gene therapy virus, inserted into blood stem cells that are then transplanted, markedly reduced sickle-induced red-cell damage in mice with sickle cell disease.

Sickle-cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that affects the haemoglobin within the red blood cells. This disease causes episodes of very severe pain caused by vaso-occlusive crisis. It also causes lesions of all vital organs, sensitivity to infections, as well as iron overload and endocrine disorders.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), in countries such as Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana and Nigeria, the prevalence is between 20 per cent and 30 per cent while in some parts of Uganda it is as high as 45 per cent.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 360 million people in the world are with disabling hearing loss and unaddressed condition costs approximately $750 billion (N345 trillion).

As part of efforts to mitigate hearing loss and its consequences and celebrate the World Hearing Day, March 3, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for sound investment, prevention, screening for early identification, rehabilitation through hearing devices, captioning and sign language education.

The theme for World Hearing Day 2017 “Action for hearing loss: make a sound investment” draws attention to the economic impact of hearing loss. The WHO recommended among others: Hearing loss must be addressed as a public health issue; there is a need for policy-makers to allocate resources for, and plan strategically to promote, access to ear and hearing care; public health strategies should address prevention, screening and early intervention of hearing loss; and country-specific data on the cost of unaddressed hearing loss and cost–effectiveness of interventions should be gathered to strengthen available evidence.
