Bayern go 10 points clear as rivals crash

http://ift.tt/2mU1wqM

Bayern Munich went 10 points clear in the Bundesliga on Saturday as Robert Lewandowski netted twice in their 3-0 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt while their main rivals lost.

Bayern have now hit 28 goals in their last six games with Lewandowski claiming 10 of them as coach Carlo Ancelotti stays on course to steer Bayern to a fifth straight German league title in his first season.

The German giants are also well-placed to complete a treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup titles. It is nearly four months since Bayern’s last defeat — a 3-2 loss at Rostov in the Champions League on November 23.

Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead at the Allianz Arena on 38 minutes when he netted Thomas Mueller’s final pass — the tenth league assist this season from Germany star’s who is struggling to score.

Brazil winger Douglas Costa added Bayern’s second three minutes later when he smashed home David Alaba’s cross.

Lewandowski scored his 33rd goal this season — his 21st in the league — when he slotted home from a tight angle after the break.

Germany defender Jerome Boateng then came on for the last 25 minutes for his first appearance since shoulder surgery in December.

Bayern’s iron-grip on the Bundesliga tightened as rivals RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund both lost.

Second-placed Leipzig crashed to a 1-0 defeat at home to Wolfsburg where Germany’s Mario Gomez scored the winner while Dortmund lost 2-1 away to Hertha Berlin.

Having started their first Bundesliga season with a record 13-match unbeaten run, Leipzig have picked up just seven points in their last six games after also losing to Dortmund and Hamburg.

Yunus Malli put Daniel Didavi in behind RB’s defence to square for Gomez, who buried his shot in the roof of the net on nine minutes to give new coach Andries Jonker his first win.

Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel rotated after Wednesday’s 4-0 win at home to Benfica, but his team suffered a Champions League hangover in Berlin.

Borussia’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored for the eighth time in four games to remain the league’s top-scorer — one ahead of Lewandowski — with 22 goals, but could not prevent defeat.

Salomon Kalou had given Hertha an early lead at the Olympic Stadium before Aubameyang netted with his second touch in a move orchestrated by Japan’s Shinji Kagawa.

But dead-ball specialist Marvin Plattenhardt smashed home a free kick for Hertha’s winner on 71 minutes to give Berlin only their third win in seven games

Bottom side Darmstadt are 11 points from safety despite their 2-1 home win with 10 men against Mainz thanks to first-half goals from Germany international Sidney Sam and captain Aytac Sulu.

Darmstadt played the last 30 minutes a man down after Mario Vrancic’s dismissal for a second booking.

Hoffenheim remain fourth after their 1-1 draw at Freiburg as Maximilian Philipp’s penalty was cancelled out by Andrej Kramaric.

An intruder with a backpack was arrested after breaching the White House grounds while US President Donald Trump was there, US media said Saturday.

After scaling a fence, the suspect was arrested by the US Secret Service after the late Friday incident in the nation’s capital, according to the Washington Post.

The paper said authorities did not find dangerous materials inside the backpack following a screening. The grounds of the presidential complex were also deemed safe.

Trump, who is spending the weekend in Washington, was in the White House at the time and was apprised of the situation, CNN said.

Senegal and Gambia announce new era of ties…Read full details

Senegal and The Gambia on Saturday affirmed a “new dynamic” between the two countries since the fall of former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh, and vowed to strengthen economic and military co-operation.

New President Adama Barrow has described French-speaking Senegal, which almost entirely surrounds his Anglophone nation, as The Gambia’s “best friend”, breaking with fractious years under his predecessor Yahya Jammeh.

Barrow’s three-day visit to Senegal at the invitation of President Macky Sall wound up on Saturday and was his first foreign outing since becoming president in January.

An agreement was signed to work together on tourism, a key industry for both nations, according to a joint statement issued at the end of a series of meetings between the two heads of state.

Greater defence co-operation was also agreed as The Gambia attempts to reform its army, and as Senegalese troops remain on Gambian soil to assure security while suspected Jammeh loyalists are investigated.

Sall and Barrow also agreed for top Gambian and Senegalese officials to meet every six months to discuss ties, the statement added.

The two west African nations already share deep cultural ties and most families have relatives living in both countries, but Jammeh was long accused of supporting Senegalese separatist rebels and of blocking a bridge project over the River Gambia.

Two dead in Burkina Faso ‘jihadist’ attack…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2lDhv84

A school director and a villager in a Burkina Faso province on the border with Mali were killed Friday in a suspected attack by jihadists, security and local officials said.

They were gunned down by two armed men who “then returned to Mali on a motorcycle”, said Mohammed Dah, high commissioner for Soum province.

A security source told AFP the perpetrators “without doubt were jihadists” who have been rampant since 2015 in the Sahel region that borders Mali and Niger.

The killings took place four days after attacks on public buildings in Soum by the Ansarul Islam jihadist group. One woman was wounded.

Ansarul Islam claimed an attack in December on an army squad near the Malian border in which 12 soldiers were killed, the deadliest-ever assault on the military.

Teachers have previously been threatened by jihadists in Soum. At the end of January, armed men burst into two schools near the town of Djibo and demanded staff stop teaching French and use Arabic instead.

Ansarul Islam is led by Burkinabe Malam Ibrahim Dicko, a radical preacher who wants to create an Islamist “kingdom” in the region, experts say.

Long spared the Islamist violence affecting several nations in the region, notably Mali and Niger, Burkina Faso has been hit by attacks and kidnappings since April 2015.

Trump attorney general urged to quit over Russia links…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2mK8X0O

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi holds her weekly press briefing on Capitol Hill March 2, 2017 in Washington, DC. Top US Democrats demanded the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions Thursday over his failure to disclose that he met twice with Russia’s ambassador to Washington during last year’s election campaign.

The revelation of Sessions’ Russian contacts — which directly contradicted his testimony in Senate confirmation hearings — plunged President Donald Trump’s administration into fresh turmoil, dashing its hopes for a feel-good reboot after a chaotic start.

The previously undisclosed meetings once again raised the question of whether Trump’s campaign team colluded with Russian attempts to influence the outcome of the US elections.

And they fed mounting calls for Sessions to recuse himself from oversight of Justice Department and FBI probes into the alleged Russian meddling and contacts with Trump campaign advisers.

“I have said whenever it’s appropriate, I will recuse myself. There’s no doubt about that,” Sessions told NBC News, while denying any wrongdoing.

“I have not met with any Russians at any time to discuss any political campaign, and those remarks are unbelievable to me and are false. And I don’t have anything else to say about that.”

The White House confirmed the meetings took place but insisted Sessions had done nothing inappropriate and dismissed the revelations, which first appeared in the Washington Post, as a partisan attack.

Several leading Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in calling on Sessions to stand back.

“AG Sessions should clarify his testimony and recuse himself,” Jason Chaffetz, a member of the House Government Oversight Committee, tweeted.

Democrats went further, demanding that the attorney general resign and that a special prosecutor be appointed to probe the administration’s Russia links.

“The Department of Justice should be above reproach,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “For the good of the country, Attorney General Sessions should resign.”

If the Justice Department failed to act on naming a special prosecutor, Congress should act to put the matter in the hands of a panel of judges, he said.

Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, also called for Sessions to step down.

– Dashed after-glow –
The latest revelation came as the White House was basking in the after-glow of Trump’s well-received speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.

Trump’s softer tone in the address was seen as a tactical retreat from the whirlwind of conflicts and controversies that unsettled his first 40 days in office.

The calm was shattered late Wednesday.

The Washington Post revealed for the first time that Sessions met Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in July and September, just as accusations of Russian interference in the election were mounting.

That directly contradicted Sessions’ statement during his Senate confirmation hearing January 10.

When asked about the Trump campaign’s alleged contacts with the Russians, Sessions said, “I have been called a surrogate at a time or two in that campaign and I didn’t have — did not have communications with the Russians, and I’m unable to comment on it.”

A White House official rejected the Post report as “the latest attack against the Trump administration by partisan Democrats.”

“Sessions met with the ambassador in an official capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is entirely consistent with his testimony.”

In Moscow, the Kremlin said it was unaware of any specific meetings between Sessions and the Russian ambassador ahead of the US election, but that any such encounters would have been routine.

– Repeated contacts? –
It was the second time Kislyak has emerged at the center of the Russia controversies.

Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn was forced to resign February 13 after it was reported that he had talked to the Russian ambassador the same day that outgoing president Barack Obama was expelling 35 Russian diplomats in retaliation for the election meddling.

Flynn misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of the talks, which eventually led Trump to sack the retired general.

The New York Times reported two weeks ago, citing US intelligence sources, that three Trump campaign staff — including campaign chief Paul Manafort — had communicated with Russian intelligence officers over the past year.

The White House also labeled that report “false” and has accused Democrats, the media and the intelligence community of a political effort to undermine the Trump administration.

US intelligence chiefs announced in December that they had concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind a hacking and misinformation campaign to hurt Hillary Clinton and boost Trump’s chances to win the November 8 presidential election.

But they have not made their evidence public, and the Kremlin denies it.

White House considering new immigration order…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2lDjA4i

The White House confirmed Sunday it is considering issuing a new order on immigration now that President Donald Trump's travel ban has been halted as it makes its way through the courts.

The White House confirmed Sunday it is considering issuing a new order on immigration now that President Donald Trump’s travel ban has been halted as it makes its way through the courts.

“Right now we are considering and pursuing all options,” presidential aide Stephen Miller told Fox television.

He said the next step would be either filing an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court, defending the merits of the order in lower courts or issuing a new one.

“The president’s powers here are beyond question,” said Miller, who is considered one of the driving forces behind Trump’s first actions on immigration. Miller insisted the president has the power to keep some people from entering the United States.

“We are contemplating new and additional actions to ensure that immigration is not a vehicle for admitting people into our country that are hostile to its nation and its values,” Miller said.

The order that Trump issued abruptly on January 27 halts resettlement of all refugees for 120 days and that of Syrian refugees indefinitely.

It also bars for 90 days the entry of nationals from seven mainly Muslim countries.

A federal judge in Seattle issued a stay against the order on February 3. Then a three judge appeals panel in San Francisco voted unanimously last week against reinstating Trump’s ban. Among other things, it rejected the argument that the president’s actions in the area of immigration cannot be reviewed by the courts.

The Trump ban was supposed to be in place while the government comes up with a new system of so-called “extreme vetting” of people seeking entry visas. This could include checks on their social media accounts, according to John Kelly, the secretary of homeland security.

“Our immigration system should not be a vehicle for admitting people who have anything but love in their hearts for this nation and this constitution,” said Miller, who is 31.

“It is a message that I want the world to hear today. This country will protect its borders. It will protect its people,” Miller said.

The idea of the White House issuing a modified immigration order that would survive scrutiny in the courts does not convince Democrats, who from the outset have charged that Trump’s order is simply anti-Muslim and plays into the hands of extremists.

“It will be used as a recruitment for terrorist organizations. It will put Americans at greater risk traveling abroad,” said Democratic Senator Ben Cardin.

EU’s Juncker says he won’t seek second term in 2019

Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Union’s powerful executive Commission, said Saturday he would not seek a second term when his tenure expires in 2019.

“It was a fine election campaign” in 2014, Juncker told Deutschlandfunk radio. “But there won’t be a second one, because I won’t be putting myself forward as a candidate for a second time.”

Juncker, 62, a conservative former prime minister of Luxembourg, took office on November 1 2014 after a long spell at the helm of the Eurogroup, gathering ministers of countries which share the euro.

Presidents of the Commission are appointed for a five-year term, which is renewable.

The post is elected by the European Parliament, on a proposal by the European Council, which comprises heads of state or government.

Juncker was chosen despite fierce objections by Britain, which regarded him as too federalist.

Twitter woes deepen as growth sputters, loss widens

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Twitter shares plunged Thursday as the social network reported sluggish revenue and user growth, with its finances sputtering despite the global prominence given the platform by President Donald Trump’s extensive use of it.

In late morning trade, Twitter shares tumbled 9.5 percent to $16.94 as investor hopes faded for a rekindling of growth at the messaging platform, which has lagged behind its rivals in the fast-moving social media segment.

Twitter reported a net loss in the fourth quarter of $167 million, after a $90 million deficit in the corresponding period a year ago.

Revenue in the quarter rose a modest one percent to $717 million.

In the critical area of user growth, Twitter said it ended 2016 with 319 million monthly active users, a gain of four percent from a year ago in the closely watched metric and only two million more than the prior quarter.

Advertising revenue, which makes up the lion’s share of Twitter’s receipts, was down slightly from a year ago at $638 million. Its revenue from the United States was down five percent at $440 million.

For all of 2016, Twitter lost $456 million on revenues of $2.5 billion. That represented a narrowing of the deficit from 2015 and a 14 percent increase in revenue.

Chief executive Jack Dorsey remained upbeat about Twitter’s long-term prospects.

“The whole world is watching Twitter,” Dorsey told a conference call.

“While we may not be meeting everyone’s growth expectations, there’s one thing that continues to grow and outpace our peers: Twitter’s influence and impact.”

He added: “You don’t go a day without hearing about Twitter, how it is used as the fastest way to send a message to the world in an instant, how it carries some of the most important commentary and conversations, how it mobilized people into action. That’s powerful. It’s valuable. It’s fundamental. And it’s the reason we’re all here fighting so hard for the service and company we love.”

Twitter, which has never reported a profit, has been revamping its offerings as it seeks to expand beyond its core base of politicians, celebrities and journalists.

Some analysts had expected a bump in Twitter use following the election of Donald Trump, who is an avid user of the platform and frequently uses it to offer his views on policy.

Dorsey said that Twitter “overcame the toughest challenge for any consumer service at scale by reversing declining audience trends and re-accelerating usage.”

He said that “daily active usage accelerated for the third consecutive quarter, and we see this strong growth continuing.”

Twitter said it continues to work toward achieving profitability in 2017.

Chief operating officer Anthony Noto commented, “We’re hearing positive feedback from our ad partners about our continued acceleration in audience growth and engagement.”

But he noted that “revenue growth will continue to lag audience growth due to the sales cycle, and could be further impacted by the escalating competition for digital advertising spending and our efforts to re-evaluate our revenue product feature portfolio.”

Earlier this week, analyst Richard Greenfield of the research firm BTIG said he saw positive signs of growing user engagement on Twitter.

“It is undeniable that Twitter has been thrust into the global Zeitgeist following the US presidential election in November,” Greenfield said in a research note.

“Not only is President Trump actively using Twitter to communicate directly with the American people, his tweets are impacting consumers all around the world.”

Greenfield said he does not expect immediate financial rewards for Twitter, but that improvement is possible over the next year.

Ambode to barnish yellow buses off Lagos roads

http://ift.tt/2jUt2nB

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said he plans to banish the buses by the end of this year because they are "not acceptable and befitting for a megacity". PHOTO: PIUS UTOMI EKPEI/AFP/Getty Images

If there’s one symbol that defines Nigeria’s economic hub of Lagos it’s the yellow “danfo” mini-bus, the closest thing to public transport in the chaotic, sprawling metropolis.

But on Monday Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said he plans to banish the buses by the end of this year because they are “not acceptable and befitting for a megacity”.

Ambode’s drive is the latest attempt in a seemingly never-ending campaign to tame the wild streets of Lagos, which is renowned for its traffic gridlock and crumbling infrastructure.

The governor’s goal is to replace the buses — as well as motorcycle taxis and three-wheeled motorised rickshaws — with a modern public transportation system.

“When I wake up in the morning and see all these yellow buses and see okada (motorbike) and all kinds of tricycles and then we claim we are a megacity, that is not true and we must acknowledge that that is a faulty connectivity that we are running,” he said.

“We want to banish yellow buses this year,” he said in a speech, according to a state government news release.

“We must address the issue of connectivity that makes people to move around with ease and that is where we are going.”

Like other fast-growing African cities, Lagos, which is home to some 20 million people, has seen its population boom without the infrastructure to keep up with demand.

The first phase of a rapid transport rail system was originally due to open in 2014 and then in December last year, while there are even plans for a cable car system.

The buses may not be pretty — many have doors missing and spew noxious clouds of exhaust fumes — while their drivers seem only vaguely aware of the highway code, indicators and the brake pedal.

But as a cheap form of transport, strictly enforced by a daredevil conductor often found hanging off the side of the bus, they are the preferred form of travel for many workers.

I didn’t ride on my father`s shoulders into politics, says Lai Mohammed’ son

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Folajimi Mohammed (Ikeja 1), says he did not ride on his father’s shoulders into politics.

The legislator, who is the son of Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, spoke to an audience at the “Unstuck Conference 2017“on Sunday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmaker was one of the young panelists who shared their success stories at the motivational conference with the theme, “From Stress to Success“.

He attributed his political sojourn to his strong will, determination and bravery, with only a very little of his father`s influence. Mohammed said that his father, initially, was not favourably disposed to his decision and so he had to find other ways of accomplishing his mission.

“I told myself I had to find other ways to achieve my goal even if my father won`t support me.

“So, I was going to meet people and telling them of my intention to contest as a lawmaker in the state. Gradually, I was getting support and I even raised money from my supporters to fund the project.

“There was a time I was even told to step down from contesting because they said it wasn`t my time. I encountered these problems and more. But these problems were not enough to stop me.

“By the time I put everything in place, it was too late for my father to stop me. Those who say I became a lawmaker in Ikeja because of my father`s name do not know the story.

“It was a story of stress, struggles, determination, and focus, but I thank God for where I am today; I thank the people for believing in me, and my father for his late support,” he said.

Mohammed urged young people to set goals for themselves and pursue them passionately until they brought them into fruition.

The lawmaker told the audience that the road to success was always strewn with stones and pebbles, but advised youths to brave the odds to achieve their life dreams.

Also speaking, Mrs Nelly Agbogu, founder of Nelly`s Confectioneries, charged youths to see opportunities in problems, rather than whining about them. She said that she came about her flourishing business because of the need to eat healthy foods after she was becoming obese for consuming junk foods.

“I came about this business because I was not comfortable with my big size. I was eating all sorts of things and it got to a point that I couldn’t do things again because I was weighing over 150kg.

“And I said to myself, I need to start eating healthy and do exercise. So, I went to Youtube to learn how to prepare healthful foods.

“So, an idea to solve a personal problem soon became a business. Now, we are overwhelmed with orders from everywhere. There is an opportunity in every problem, “she said.

Another panelist, Steve Harris, said that he rose from a two-time university drop-out to become a much sought-after management consultant. He advised youths not to brood over their life disappointments, but to find a way around them to find their place in life.

Also, Dr Ola Orekunre-Brown said that with determination, she braved the odds to become the founder of the biggest air-ambulance services firm in West Africa from being a shoe seller in England years back.

She urged youths to always have a mindset of success and never allow unpleasant situations to overwhelm them. Mr Deji Osasuna, Convener of the conference, said the programme was organized to motivate the youths to aim at success, irrespective of their situations in life.

He said that the name, “Unstuck“ was carefully chosen to let young people know that when they think they are stuck in life, they can actually find a way around it and turn their situations to success stories.
