FG to consolidate, allocate coal sites to power sector players, says Fayemi (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2mCqLvk

Dr. Kayode Fayemi

The Federal Government said on Monday in Minna that it would consolidate and allocate coal sites across the country to “serious minded players in the power sector” to generate energy.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, disclosed this during a visit to the Abuja Steel Mills Limited, Minna.

According to Fayemi, the ministry is considering the power sector as its priority area that needs coal to address electricity deficit in the country.

“We are not saying that we will not give coal to others that need coals for the production of steel or relevant manufacturing works, but right now power sector needs coal,” he said.

He said that the management of Abuja Steel Mill had requested for coal for the production of steel, adding that the ministry would support local steel manufacturers that could solve steel deficit.

“Our work as a ministry is to facilitate companies that have taken it upon themselves to manufacture steel locally, rather than importing substandard steel with our hard earned Forex.”

He expressed appreciation to the management of the company for employing 450 Nigerians and providing healthcare facilities, adding that the company should train its local engineers to perform or take over its expatriate tasks.

He also urged the company to continue to maintain its standard of production to gain adequate market and bridge steel importation gap.

He said the ministry would encourage the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing to link the company to construction giants in the country to patronise their products.

He promised to liaise with Nigerian Customs Service on scrap metals being exported on a daily basis, as scarcity of the material had hiked prices of steel produced locally.

However, he promised to solve some of the requests presented by the company, adding that it should also fulfill the ministry’s requirements to move the country forward.

Mr Richpal Singh, Executive Director and Advisor of the company, urged the minister to make coal sites available to the company to boost steel production. Singh said availability of coal would enable the company to produce 6.8 million tonnes required for local consumption.

He said the scrap metals being sold at the rate of N50,000 per tonne now sold at N250,000, as the materials were being exported due to high exchange rate.

He said one of the company’s challenges was scarcity of scrap metals being used for the production of steel, as Nigerians were now making brisk business with some Chinese firms to package and export them. The company produces 150,000 tonnes yearly and is currently the highest steel producer in the country.

All the local steel companies in Nigeria are producing 2.5 million tonnes annually and Nigeria requires 6.8 tonnes of steel every year. The company is an Indian organisation with other seven subsidiaries in steel, chemical and energy production.

Arab Israelis protest mosque loudspeaker bills…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2mcujCE

Arab Israelis march in the northern Arab town of Kabul, 14 kilometres southeast of Acre, during a demonstration against a planned Israeli legislation that would quieten mosques, on March 11, 2017. Israel's parliament gave preliminary approval on March 8 to two controversial measures that would limit calls to prayers from mosques, including one prohibiting the use of loudspeakers at all hours, after shouting matches between lawmakers.<br />AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP

Thousands of Arabs staged a protest march Saturday in northern Israel against legislation aimed at silencing mosque loudspeakers, an AFP reporter said.

Some three thousand men and women marched through the town of Kabul, holding Palestinian flags and signs saying “The muezzin law won’t pass” or “Don’t silence the muezzin”, chanting against the legislation and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel’s parliament on Wednesday gave preliminary approval to two controversial bills that would limit the calls to prayer from mosques in Israel and occupied east Jerusalem, including one prohibiting the use of loudspeakers at all hours.

The bills were approved after a heated discussion that turned into shouting matches between ruling coalition members and Arab lawmakers, some of whom tore copies of the legislation and were ejected from the chamber.

While the bills in theory would apply to any religious place of worship, Muslims say they are clearly meant to silence Islam’s traditional call to prayer.

The measures have become commonly known as the “muezzin law” after the official charged with making the call to the faithful, often through powerful speakers mounted on minarets.

The notion of Israeli legislation silencing mosques has sparked outrage around the Arab and wider Muslim world.

Supporters of the move say it is needed to prevent daily disturbances to the lives of hundreds of thousands of Israelis.

Members of the Arab Joint List and the Islamic Movement took part in Saturday’s march.

Arab Israelis are descendants of Palestinians who remained after Israel’s creation in 1948, and account for about 17.5 percent of the country’s eight million population, with many identifying as Palestinian.

Ancelotti escapes middle finger punishment

Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti will not be punished for showing Hertha Berlin fans his middle finger but must make a donation to charity, the German Federation (DFB) said on Tuesday.

The Italian coach had made the explicit gesture after being spat at by Hertha fans during Bayern’s 1-1 draw in Berlin on Saturday.

The DFB said it had closed the case against Ancelotti “on condition the Bayern Munich coach makes a 5,000-euros ($5,270) donation to the Sepp-Herberger Foundation”, the federation said in a statement on its website.

The foundation — named after the coach of the West Germany team that won the 1954 World Cup — is an association run by the DFB to provide opportunities for handicapped footballers and to help former prisoners reintegrate into society.

Bayern had publically backed their coach after his gesture, saying: “Essentially, we find emotionally understandable the human reaction that drove Carlo Ancelotti to make this gesture, as a response to this vile attack.”

On Monday, the DFB had invited Ancelotti to explain his actions — the Italian had already admitted his guilt to German television station ARD after the match.

Tensions were high during the match, in which Bayern, whose players had been jeered throughout, equalised six minutes into added time.

House of Representatives Committee on Federal Character has given the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) one week to correct employment irregularities in the commission.

The commission was directed to report back to the committee after the deadline. Chairman of the committee, Rep. Ahmed Wase, gave the ultimatum at a public hearing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said that the committee had gone through the nominal roll of the commission and had discovered some irregularities that contradicted the Federal Character Law. Wase said that the committee observed that some states across the six geo-political zones were under-represented while others were over-represented.

In his responds, the Director General of SEC, Mr Mounir Gwarzo, explained that some states where the commission’s zonal offices were located were given consideration.

He said that the employment process took into consideration the comfort of members of staff who would work as drivers or clerks at the zonal offices to enable them function effectively.

According to the director general, members of staff at the zonal offices will only function effectively if they are familiar with the terrain. The committee, however, said that it was not satisfied with the explanation and demanded that all irregularities be corrected within one week.
