‘Why Senate summoned Customs boss’ (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2mRjcTD

Senator Dino Melaye (APC – Kogi) PHOTO: TWITTER/NIGERIAN SENATE

The Senate has listed its grouses against the Comptroller General of Customs, rtd Col Hameed Ali.The Upper Chamber had last Thursday, summoned Ali, after adopting a motion raised by Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West). The senators were particularly irked by remarks allegedly made by Ali that seemed to indicate the Senate had no control on the Nigeria Customs Service.

The Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Solomon Adeola (APC Lagos West) yesterday explained that the Upper Legislative Chamber was also unhappy with Ali’s alleged refusal to respect the authority of the finance minister, who had the supervisory responsibility over the Customs Service.

Adeola said: “The All Progressives Congress APC-led government of President Muhammadu Buhari was elected on adherence to the rule of law and renunciation of impunity in any form. The story we hear daily is the arrogance and high-handedness of the CG and name-dropping of the president.

He further said: “We had it on good authority of his reluctance to answer to the minister of finance as stipulated in constitution. We that were elected cannot look the other way while the people we represent are subjected to avoidable hardship orchestrated by an unelected appointee in a bid to cure the inefficiencies of the agency he leads. We are in a democracy,” he explained.

The lawmaker further said that the Senate’s resolution for Ali to appear in the Nigeria Custom Service uniform and rank to explain his refusal to suspend the policy on duty on vehicles and other recent acts of the Customs was to protect the organisational integrity and discipline.

Adeola, who is also member of the Finance, Marine, Interior and Science and Technology committees of the Senate, said it is regrettable that as a retired army colonel, who should know the importance of uniforms, the Custom boss wants to demean and undermine the symbolic importance of uniforms, discipline as well as the authority it confers on the agency in its operation as a lawful body.

“We once had a Major General Haladu Hananiya as head of Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) wearing the agency’s uniform as well as a Major Danjuma Maigari wearing the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) agency uniform in Lagos State all in a bid to promote the agencies they lead,” he said.

Adeola maintained that military and paramilitary uniforms, inclusive of ranks are part of the symbol of legitimate authority conferred on the wearer to carry out certain duties on behalf of the government.

According to the senator, to address the concern of officers and men of the Customs Service on the appointment of an ‘outsider’ to head the agency, there may be need to amend the Nigerian Customs Act to restrict appointment of CG to career officers as is done in the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Immigrations and the Nigerian Prisons Service.

Indians establish free diabetes testing camps in Lagos (Read full details)

Diabetes Test

The Indian Cultural Association in Lagos and Bhojraj Chanrai Foundation, have imported a technology worth about  $40,000 for free non-invasive early detection of diabetes among Nigerians.

The association’s president, Sanjay Jain, told journalists in Lagos that the technology was meant to facilitate the operations of the association’s newly established free diabetes detection camps in Lagos.

Jain said the Indian community in Nigeria had always had the interest of “needy Nigerians” at heart, and decided to import the
technology for detecting diabetes seven years before complications.

“This new technology machine has been bought and imported to Nigeria, at the cost of $40,000. And, it is the only non-invasive detection system so far, with simple scanning test.

“We have found out that Type 2 Diabetes is the commonest in Nigeria today, and that more than six million people in the country, currently have diabetes.

“Medical findings have shown that Nigeria, unfortunately, currently has the highest mortality rate from diabetes,” he said. Head of the Indian charitable organisation enjoined the public, especially those living in Lagos State, to avail themselves of the free diabetes testing scheduled for Saturday, March 18 and Saturday, March 25.

“On these two Saturdays, we are going to organise free testing camps at our centre at No. 2 Cappa Avenue, Palmgrove Estate, Ilupeju, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

“Whoever wishes to benefit from this free testing for diabetes should come for the test. It is completely free for all, “he said. The president said that Indians had discovered that the high mortality rate from diabetes in Nigeria was due to improper diagnosis and expensive nature of its management.

He said that with the new technology, it would become easier and more accessible for more people to be diagnosed and counseled on how best to manage diabetes free of charge.

Jain said the benefits of the new system include early detection, no drawing of blood, quick test within six seconds, no fasting or pre-conditioning, different from traditional diagnostic methods and immediate test results.

Gunmen abduct 2 dredgers in Lagos

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Suspected kidnappers have abducted two sand dredgers at Eleko Village in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State. Sources revealed, yesterday, that the victims were kidnapped on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who came through the lagoon around 9a.m., shot sporadically before they took the two dredgers away in their speedboat.

It was gathered that those abducted were the dredging company’s manager and the machine operator. According to a source, one of the workers was hit on the arm by bullets, while trying to escape.

The source said: “We were in our various houses when we heard gunshots. After the dust had settled, we went to the scene. Unfortunately, we found one of the workers in a pool of his blood.

“We took him to a private clinic in the community, after which we then reported the matter at the Akodo Police Division.

“It was when we got to the clinic that we realised it was kidnappers that invaded the dredging site. We call on government and the security agencies to come to our aid.”

It was further gathered that the dredging company was said to have started operation in the community in January.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police was called upon to deploy marine police personnel to the riverine areas of the state.

“On that fateful day, if some marine police personnel were stationed in the coastal area, the gunmen would probably have been arrested,” another source said.

CAF Elections: Pinnick has mandate to dump Hayatou – NFF

http://ift.tt/2drHOet

Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande on Thursday cleared the air on the Federation’s mandate to its President, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, with regards to the forthcoming election into the presidency of the Confederation of African Football.

“The issue of which of the two candidates the NFF should support came up during our last Board meeting in Abuja, on Tuesday 7th February 2017. Every single member of Board spoke on the issue and expressed support for the NFF President, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, to use his discretion and vote for that candidate who will best serve Nigeria’s interest during the election. This support was given based on the fact as the NFF President and a Member of the CAF Organizing Committee for the Africa Cup of Nations, he is fully in tune with the political play at that level and knows what would be best for Nigeria.

“There was not a dissenting voice in the room that day. Everyone agreed that Mr. Pinnick should go ahead and cast his vote for the candidate he feels would support Nigerian Football to grow the way we want it. It is not correct for anyone to say the matter was not discussed.”

“The Board spent good time discussing the CAF elections and the importance of Nigeria having someone on the CAF Executive Committee, considering the huge role that our nation has always been playing in peace –keeping and sundry noble programs on the continent.

“There is no division in the NFF Board. We are giving full and unconditional support to Mr. Pinnick to stand for the elections and for him to cast his vote for that candidate whose presidency of CAF would serve the interest of our great nation.”

Yahaya-Kwande, who is a ranking member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, stated that the Federation remained grateful for the support that the Federal Government continues to give to the body towards the execution of its programmes and activities.

The 39th Ordinary Congress of CAF, at which the elections would take place, comes up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in exactly three weeks’ time.

YAKUBU: CSOs task EFCC on fair trial

We’ve injected over $16bn into Nigerian operations —MTN Group

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Emeka Aginam

LAGOS — Despite the challenges arising from the N330 billion fine imposed on it by Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, last year, MTN Group said, yesterday, it had so far injected over $16 billion in its operations in the country.

Chairman/Chief Executive of MTN Group, Mr. Phuthuma Freedom Nhleko, disclosed this when he led a high level delegation to NCC headquarters in Abuja.

Nhleko, who was received by the Executive Vice Chairman, EVC, of the commission, Prof Umar Danbatta, and his team, said the group had faith in Nigeria and would be willing to invest more in the sector in the years to come.

“We had challenges in the past, during the period of the fine, and we are grateful for the role the commission played towards an amicable resolution,” he said.

Nhleko, whose visit to the NCC management was a valedictory one as he steps down as Group Chairman in March, said: “We have a very long way to go and so ask for spectrum which is the oxygen and life blood to navigate this long and tedious investment journey.  Without spectrum, the sector will suffocate.”

Nhleko specifically solicited more spectrum allocation and a release of the one that belonged to Visafone, which equity shares MTN acquired in 2015.

In his response, Prof. Danbatta said: “I like to state that our word is our covenant. When we take decisions, we are concerned about the stability of the industry and there is no way we can guarantee it without considering the dominant status of MTN and its obligations.

“If the dominant status is becoming stringent, we are open to engagement, we will be guided by what is happening in the market to ensure the growth and development of the sector.

“The sector has contributed very well to the National Gross Domestic Product, GDP, and has shown remarkable resilience in this recession.”

Danbatta said the NCC made a case for relaxing fiscal policies towards the sector to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, adding that the CBN governor  was favorably disposed to request and further engagement, especially towards major players who desired to import equipment to aid deployment of broadband infrastructure services and others.

Olisa Agbakoba

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has forwarded names of nine eligible candidates to the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, Judicial Service Commission, Justice Walter Onnoghen, for appointment as justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The short-listing followed a rigorous process of selection done by a select committee chaired by the president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Mahmoud, with eight other eminent lawyers as members.

Among candidates nominated for selection by the NJC was former President of the NBA, Chief Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).

Others are Anthony Ikemefuna Idigbe (SAN), Yunus Ustas Usman (SAN), Babatunde Fagbohunlu (SAN), Miannayaaja Essien (SAN), Awa Uma Kalu (SAN), Professor Awalu Hamish Yadudu, Tajudeen Oladoja and Ayuba Giwa.
