The House of Representatives on Wednesday expressed concern over the alleged harassment of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states over unpaid agriculture loans granted them before their displacement.

This followed a motion moved by Rep. Adamu Kamale (PDP-Adamawa) on the need to halt the arrest and prosecution of returning IDPs over loans granted by the Bank of Agriculture before their displacement.

Moving the motion, Kamale noted that most of the farmers at the point of displacement were beneficiaries of various agriculture loans, subsidy on fertiliser, tractor hiring and implements.

However, the lawmaker explained that at the time of the attacks in the North East by Boko Haram insurgents, most of the farm produce were still unharvested, adding that their livestock were carted away by the insurgents.

Kamale expressed worry that presently, several returnee IDPs in the affected region were being threatened with arrest and prosecution over the loans granted to them.

The House, therefore, mandated its committee on Agricultural Production and Services to investigate the matter and report back within four weeks for further legislative input.

The Senate says underfunding of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other anti-corruption agencies may scuttle the fight against corruption.

The Senate made known in a statement signed by the Spokesperson for the Commission, Mrs Rashidat Okoduwa and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Anti-corruption and Financial Crimes, Sen. Chukwuka Utazi raised the concern during the budget defence of ICPC at the National Assembly Complex.

The chairman said that poor budgetary allocation to the commission would hinder it from attaining the set targets.

“If we want to fight corruption, we must fund the fight. You want to fight corruption without funding? It won’t work.

“An agency like ICPC needs to get into the consciousness of Nigerians. It needs to do enlightenment and educate the people on the ills of corruption.

“This will help us to look at the cause, which is less expensive than what we are doing now by running after the corrupt people,’’ the chairman was quoted as saying.

Utazi assured ICPC that the senate would ensure improved budgetary allocation to the commission.

According to him, there must be a total overturn in the budgetary process and the committee will make a case to get what the commission deserves to do its job.

Utazi also assured that the committee with the engagement of other colleagues from the House of Representatives would look at the paltry sums being given to the commission.

Earlier, the Chairman of ICPC, Mr Ekpo Nta had lamented that inadequate funding was hindering the performance of the commission.

He told the committee that some operations of the commission were delayed and others left unexecuted in 2016 because of insufficient funds even while they were captured in the budget.

ICPC had submitted a budget proposal of N5.8 billion for 2017 to the National Assembly.

EFCC recovers 17 vehicles from ex-Customs boss (Read full details)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered 17 “exotic vehicles’’ in a warehouse belonging to a former Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko Inde.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, Head, Media and Publicity of the commission, said on Wednesday in Abuja that the vehicles were recovered from Inde’s residence located at Nnamdi Azikwe Street, Kaduna.

The recovery was sequel to an intelligence report the commission received that stolen money and properties suspected to be proceeds of crime were being warehoused at the former customs boss’ premises, he said.

He said upon receipt of the intelligence, a team of operatives from the Kano Zonal Office of EFCC were deployed to carry out investigation on the matter.

“On arrival at the location, two individuals who were identified to be the custodians of the property – Dantala Mohammed and Ahmed Balarabe, were presented with a search warrant.

“In the course of the search, a total of 17 vehicles among which are brand new cars, shuttle busses and SUVs were found in the premises,” he said.

Uwujaren said the vehicles and the two individuals have been conveyed to the commission’s zonal offices in Kaduna and Kano, respectively.

He said investigation revealed that the warehouse in question actually belongs to the former customs boss.

EFCC listed the particulars of the vehicles recovered to include Black colour BMW 525i series, 2010 model with chassis number WBAFR7108BC262936.; Ash colour Hyundai Velester, 2012 model with chassis number KMHTC6AD4CU056038; and Dark Blue BMW 325i, 2003 model with chassis number WBAEV31090KL48386.

Others are Black colour Land Cruiser Prado Jeep, 2014 model with chassis number JTEBU3FJ50K082080; Black colour Mercedes G wagon, 2013 model with chassis number WDB4632361X207661, and also a Black colour BMW 335i series, 2012 model with chassis number WBA3A91040F268895.

Also, Silver colour Peugeot 406, 2002 model with chassis number VF3BBRFNR81519018; Black colour Land Cruiser Prado Jeep, 2014 model with chassis number JTEBU3FJ10K082352, and Yellow colour Toyota FJ Jeep, 2007 model with chassis number JTEZU11F68K001301.

The commission also listed Black Toyota Avensis, 2013 model with chassis number SBIBL76L20E037245; Dark ash colour KIA Cadenza, 2011 model with chassis number KNALN414BC5093288.

It also included Silver colour Porsche Cayene, 2009 model with chassis number WPIZZZ9PZ9LA12738; Golden colour Honda Accord, 2013 model with chassis number IHGCR2634DA620609.

A White colour Nissan Urban Bus, 2006 model JNITF4E25Z071583, and a White colour Nissan Urban Bus, 1996 model with chassis number JTFJXO29P605023996.

EFCC further listed a White Toyota Hiace Bus, 2010 model with chassis number JTGJXO2P4B5020268 and a White Nissan Bus, 2009 model with chassis number JNITA4E250011697.

“The two suspects arrested are in custody assisting the EFCC in investigation,’’ the spokesman said. However, Uwujaren did not give the value of the vehicles.

Peter Sabore, a security guard in Gweru, a Zimbabwean town, has been dragged to court for allegedly attempting to remove a 70-year-old man, John Omale’s private parts.

According to Tuko, Sabore hurt the old man after he allegedly discovered he has been sleeping with his wife.

Sabore, a 45-year-old man, wanted to remove Omale’s testiciles with a motor bike brake during an altercation that happened on January 8 2017 on Baricho Road, Industrial area.

On Monday, February 7, he was a arraigned in court where he was also accused of hitting and injuring Omale.

The court heard that Sabore, who was on guard duty, had been unwell and decided to take some treatements and sleep.

Sabore then went to the 70-year-old man with a motor brake and attacked him claiming that he had snatched his wife despite being that old.

He promised revenge saying that he won’t stand and watch Omale steal his wife, promising to damage his private parts in the process.

Sabore is said to have pulled the brake and hit Omale on his private parts several times before he was rescued, saying: “Omale was taken to hospital as it was hard for him to walk due to the injuries inflicted on his testicles,” police told the court.

Sabore was then arrested after the matter landed to the police. He denied the charges and asked for lenient terms and was released on a cash bail of KSh 10, 000.

The case will be mentioned on February 20.
