Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen was stripped of her European Parliament immunity Thursday, paving the way for her prosecution over images she tweeted of Islamic State atrocities.

Prosecutors launched a probe in December, 2015 over the graphic pictures that the French National Front (FN) leader posted on social media, which included the decapitated body of US journalist James Foley.

“The result is clear, a big majority is in favour of the lifting of immunity,” acting parliament speaker Dimitrios Papadimoulis said, after lawmakers in Brussels voted by a show of hands.

The ruling is effective immediately for Le Pen, a National Front MEP, European Parliament officials told AFP.

The decision concerns only the tweets, and not a separate probe into allegations that Le Pen misused public funds when hiring a parliamentary aide, they said.

The development is the latest twist in France’s dramatic presidential election campaign, coming a day after rightwing candidate Francois Fillon vowed to continue his bid for power despite the fact he is to be charged over his own fake jobs scandal.

Le Pen addressed the tweets in 2015 to a French television journalist who had likened her party to the jihadist group. The images were tweeted with the caption “This is Daesh”, an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group.

They showed Foley’s bloodied body with his decapitated head on his torso, as well as a man on fire in a cage, and a victim being driven over by a tank. Police in the Paris suburb of Nanterre launched an investigation into “the dissemination of violent images”.

An investigating judge summoned her for an interview in April 2016 but Le Pen has so far refused to attend, citing her European Parliament immunity. If found guilty, Le Pen could face up to three years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros ($78,800).

– ‘A political inquiry’ –
“This lifting of immunity is absolutely ridiculous and problematic,” one of Le Pen’s top aides, Florian Philippot, told BFM television.

Le Pen herself has dismissed the inquiry as a “political” attempt to derail her presidential bid, in which she is predicted to win the election’s first round in April but lose a run-off in May.

“I sent two or three photos of Daesh atrocities and I said ‘This is Daesh.’ I denounced this atrocity,” she told French broadcasters on Thursday, hours ahead of the EU Parliament vote.

“Why investigate me and not others? I am a lawmaker and I was denouncing Daesh in my role as a lawmaker,” she added. “It’s a political inquiry.” On Tuesday Le Pen criticised efforts to lift her immunity as “part of the system that wants to stop the French people’s candidate that I am.”

French police have also opened a probe against Gilbert Collard, a National Front lawmaker in France, who tweeted a similar violent image on the same day.

Last month the French national assembly refused to consider a request to lift his immunity after deciding it was not “sufficiently specific”. Foley, a freelance journalist, was captured in Syria in 2012 and beheaded in August 2014.

His bereaved parents John and Diane said they wanted the images removed immediately, accusing Le Pen in a statement of using the “shamefully uncensored” picture for political ends.

While Le Pen is forecast to finish first in the first round of the election on April 23, her centrist rival Emmanuel Macron is considered the favourite to win a run-off vote on May 7.

The Federal Government has approved the implementation of a new commercial model targeted at getting sponsors to invest in the restoration of the efficiency levels of the nation’s three refineries.

Mr Anibor Kragha, Chief Operating Officer (COO) Refineries, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, said this on Wednesday in Abuja at a plenary at the ongoing 2017 Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (NOG).

The plenary was on ‘Harnessing the Opportunities in Nigeria’s Downstream Sector’.

Kragha said under the new model, President Muhammadu Buhari also approved the engagement of strategic investors.

“As a result of what is happening and the global trend, President Muhammadu Buhari gave approval for strategic investments to be made in the refineries.

“So the investment model is basically this way, strategic investors who can bring refining expertise and funding will partner with local partners who have downstream experience to actually go into the refineries.

“They invest money and within 24 months get us to 90 per cent capacity utilisation,’’ he said.

Kragha, however, said within the new model, investors would be repaid from incremental production of the refineries on prior agreed terms.

To meet the deadline, Kragha said: “I need to first draw on funds latest by July, which is the only way we can meet the 24-month timeline.

“What we are doing now is that in parallel, we are doing evaluation of the technical stuff and we are going to engage financial advisers to start building a model.

“I will like to reiterate that there is no mandate to sell any equity in the refineries; we are not selling anything.

“This is just a strategic investment for a defined period, after which they recover their capital negotiated with term and that will help us ramp up very quickly in the next 24 months.’’

He disclosed that the corporation had met with the original builders of the Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries who because of their consistence, could get parts and pricing at better rates for the corporation.

The Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries, which even with combined efforts, cannot meet the nation’s demand for petroleum products, have for years operated below their capacities.

Other panelists at the event were former Managing Director of Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries, Alexander Ogedengbe; NNPC’s COO Downstream, Henry Ikem-Obih, and President Nigeria Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association, Dayo Adeshina.

The 2017 NOG, which began on Feb. 27, will end on Thursday.

Better known for looking after Britain’s stately homes, the National Trust is organising a series of walking tours on Soho’s gay history to celebrate 50 years since homosexuality was decriminalised.

The tours bring to life the hidden stories of a once-seedy and now increasingly gentrified part of London that served as a refuge for gay people in an era when a kiss could send you to prison.

The visits last around 90 minutes and take visitors to six spots tracing the history of the area between World War I and 1967, when homosexuality was partially decriminalised in England and Wales.

The first stop on the tour is 41 Dean Street, now a high-end restaurant that used to be the Colony Room, a famous hang-out for artists and poets that was a favourite haunt for the painter Lucian Freud.

The area was filled with gay bars at the time and, by the end of the tour, names of places and their secret locations become a blur because there are so many.

Along with gay revellers, the central London area was also filled with police — both in the streets and in the clubs — many looking for easy prosecutions.

“It was very dangerous to wear lipsticks,” said Richard Sutton, one of the volunteer tour guides.

“One of the tests to see if someone was gay was actually to use blotting paper. They put blotting paper on your face and if it came up that you were having make-up it was used as evidence,” he said.

Sometimes “just being effeminate was enough to convict you of being gay”.

– ‘There was life before’ –
Some 46,000 people were prosecuted for homosexuality between 1895 — when the Irish poet Oscar Wilde was convicted for sodomy and sent to prison — and 1967.

Alan Turing, the legendary mathematician who helped crack Nazi codes during World War II, was arrested for homosexuality in 1952. He was given the option of chemical castration to avoid prison and was found dead two years later at the age of 41, probably from suicide.

The last stop on the tour is a partial reconstruction of the Caravan Club, which was shut down in 1934 and was described at the time as a meeting place for “sexual perverts, lesbians and sodomites”.

Inside, there were low chairs, drapes and tea cups. A typewriter and a police report from when the club was shut down could be seen on one of the tables.

From this time of persecution, the situation has improved immeasurably and gay marriage was legalised in England, Wales and Scotland in 2014. Soho has also changed.

Some of its most famous clubs and cabarets have shut down and been replaced by cocktail bars and burger restaurants. According to some residents, it has lost its soul.

“A lot of places have closed. It’s all grey! People cannot afford the rents,” said Camilo, a shopkeeper at Ze German Clothing on Greek Street. “There was life before, it was full of colours!”.

Israel to Amazon: Stop selling Holocaust- denying literature

Israel’s official Holocaust memorial has asked Amazon to stop selling literature on its site that denies the genocide of 6 million Jews during World War II and otherwise promotes anti-Semitism.

Yad Vashem’s director of libraries Robert Rozett says he has dispatched a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos offering his assistance to “curb the spread of hatred.”

Rozett says Sunday that Yad Vashem has approached Amazon before on the subject but the internet retailing giant insisted it would not halt sales of offensive and inciting material, citing freedom of information. Rozett says he hoped that given the recent spike in anti-Semitic incidents in the United States, particularly a vandalism attack on a Jewish cemetery near St. Louis, Amazon would reconsider its position.

He says he has yet to hear back.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will seek to quell protectionist headwinds when he travels to Europe to mark the EU parliament’s ratification of a landmark free-trade pact with Canada.

In a speech Thursday to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Trudeau is expected to heap praise on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

“He will talk about how it is the most progressive trade agreement in the world and how it should serve as a model for subsequent trade agreements between countries,” an official in his office said.

Trudeau will also emphasize the importance of explaining the benefits of trade agreements to average citizens, given the “anxiety in the global economy particularly with middle-class citizens around the world not feeling the same benefits from the economy as they have in previous generations.”

Without that buy-in, he intends to say, countries will face “larger problems.”

The speech will come one day after the European Union parliament is scheduled to vote to ratify CETA.

Afterward Trudeau will head to Berlin for a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. He also will travel to Hamburg, Germany, where he will give a keynote address at a Saint Matthew’s dinner.

Coming on the heels of Trudeau’s first meeting in Washington with US President Donald Trump this week, the Canadian prime minister, a fervent supporter of free trade, is not expected to directly raise the issue of US protectionism.

“He will reinforce the point that trade deals like (CETA) are important for the world rather than directly addressing any protectionism or anti-trade sentiments that are out there,” the official said.

Trump, who took office January 20, repeatedly bashed the North American Free Trade Agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico on the campaign trail and vowed to renegotiate it.

With Merkel, Trudeau is also expected to discuss immigration and refugees, and Canadian security commitments in Latvia.

NATO contributions will come up. Washington has called on NATO members to boost defense spending to two percent of their economic output. Canada spends less than one percent.

“We will reiterate… that we are quite comfortable with our contribution to NATO,” the official said.

On the trip, Trudeau will be accompanied by Canadian ambassador-designate to the EU, Stephane Dion, as well as foreign affairs and trade ministers Chrystia Freeland and Francois-Philippe Champagne, respectively.

At the same time, Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan will travel to Brussels to participate in a meeting of NATO defense ministers and to Munich for a security conference.

2,500 children affected by lead poisoning in Niger

The Federal Ministry of Environment says it has facilitated the treatment of lead poisoning of more than 2, 500 children affected in Shikira community of Rafi Local Government Area of Niger.

Mrs Aanu Basil, the Deputy Director, Marine Pollution, Contamination Clean-Up and Remediation in the ministry, said other residents of the community were safe from lead poisoning with the clean-up. Basil made this known in Abuja in an interview with journalists on Saturday.

She said that the clean-up programme was an intervention from government aimed at preventing lead poisoning outbreak in the community.

She observed that lead poisoning was as a result of illegal artisanal gold mining in Angwa Megero, Angwa Kawo and Shikira communities of the state.

Basil said that the incident occurred few years after a tragedy outbreak of lead poisoning in the community killing about 28 children below the age of five.

She said that the children who were contaminated from the lead poison had been treated by the government. Basil said that three officials of the ministry visited the site on the spot assessment; adding that proposal for the cleaning-up project commenced in 2016.

She noted that the federal ministry of environment collaborated with the federal ministry of mines and steel and Ministry of Health to ensure effective implementation of the project.

“The report of the visit indicated increase in the number of death of children as a result of high concentration of lead contaminants ranging from 5000 to 166, 000ppm in the impacted environment.

“The situation was declared then as an emergency and immediate clean-up exercise of the impacted sites took place to enable tackle the situation,’’ she said.

Basil said that one of the objectives of the clean-up project was to eradicate the presence of the high concentration of lead and other heavy metals contamination.

She added that the exercise would curtail the immediate threat to life and health of the impacted communities, eliminate the continue exposure of the communities to lead and other heavy metal contaminants.

The deputy director said that the project was being implemented in two phases with the collaboration of United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

“The phase one scope of the project is identification of the contaminated sites within the Shikira communities, awareness campaign within the communities, and a Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping. “Also, characterisation of the lead impacted sites, excavation of lead contaminated sites from the three impacted communities, bagging and containerisation of excavated contaminated soils in high density polyethylene bags.

“Identification of new sites for sourcing of clean soils and for construction of landfill, excavation and transportation of clean soils to backfill the excavated contaminated soil areas, among others,’’ she said.

She said that the project implementation was with the mobilisation of both contractors and some technical advisers in the ministry.

Basil stressed the need to put in place relevant programmes for mining practices such as strong sensitisation exercise within the communities.

She said that the essence of the sensitisation was to ensure that the communities complied with safe mining practices as it would prelude re-contamination of the remediated sites.
