A man has injured three people by driving his car into a crowd at a square in the central German city of Heidelberg, as police reject speculations that the incident could be of terrorist nature.

Police said on Saturday that officers managed to track down the suspect and shot him after he fled the scene of the attack, which took place outside a bakery around afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Anne Baas said one of those injured was in critical condition.

Another police spokesman, Norbert Schaetzle, said the man reportedly used a rental car and was carrying a knife when he got out of the vehicle.

A short standoff then broke out before police managed to intercept the suspect and shot him, local media said, adding that the attacker was then carried to a hospital.

Schaetzle would not confirm reports in the media that the man was mentally disturbed, but said police was not considering the incident as a terrorist attack as the man was apparently acting alone.

Over the past two years, Germany has suffered several attacks of terrorist nature both from elements of its far-right, nationalist groups as well as people believed to have links to the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group, which is based in Iraq and Syria.

More than a million people were admitted into Germany from an influx of refugees that began to hit Europe in early 2015.

Many say the liberal policies of German Chancellor Angela Merkel on refugees are to blame for a surge in security threats. The criticism forced Berlin to revise criteria for accepting refugees, saying only those from war-ravaged territories, including from
Syria, would be welcome.

Nigel Farage to US conservatives: 2016 just the start…Read full details

Brexit champion Nigel Farage told American conservatives Friday that Britain’s shock anti-Europe move and Donald Trump’s US presidential victory launched a “great global revolution” that will spread through more western nations.

Farage received a warm welcome at CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference, where he praised Trump’s “quite remarkable” victory. “2016, we did it!” boomed the former head of Britain’s UK Independence Party.

“We witnessed the beginning of a global political revolution. And it’s one that is not going to stop, it’s one that is going to roll out across the rest of the great world,” Farage said to loud cheers.

Last year “the nation-state democracy made a comeback against the globalists.”

Farage pointed to more “very exciting elections” in store in 2017 in Germany, France, the Netherlands and possibly Italy, where last year’s tumult led to the downfall of prime minister Matteo Renzi, along with British prime minister David Cameron.

The elections, he said, will “shift the center of gravity in the entire debate” as Europeans begin to reject “the idea of being governed by a bunch of unelected old men in Brussels.”

Europhobe Farage is known for his stridently anti-immigration positions, and at CPAC he slammed the “absolute madness and idiocy” of German Chancellor Angela Merkel for allowing refugees to pour across her nation’s borders.

“We’ve got to be clear; we’re not against anybody based on religion or ethnicity,” he insisted.

“But we’re for ourselves, we’re for our country, we’re for our communities, we’re for making our people safe, and with less risk from global terror.”

Farage also blasted US mainstream media for being “in deep denial” about Trump’s victory, but said Americans as a whole will grow to appreciate the new president.

“Just as Brexit becomes more popular by the day, President Trump will become more popular in America by the day,” he said.
