To be buried after Easter, says son

Encomiums continued to pour in yesterday from the Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prominent Nigerians who have praised the virtues of the late General Adeyinka Adebayo (Rtd).

The APC in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said Adebayo’s demise was a great loss to Nigeria, the Yoruba race and his home state, Ekiti

Former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, his wife Victoria and former Head of Interim National Government (ING), Chief Ernest Shonekan, and former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, were among early callers who sent their condolences to the deceased family.

Other prominent Nigerians who thronged the 48 Ladipo Bateye Street, GRA Ikeja residence of Adebayo for his posthumous birthday and to commiserate with the family include former governors of Alliance for Democracy (AD) from 1999 to 2003, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Lagos), Chief Bisi Akande (Osun), Chief Segun Osoba (Ogun) and first son of the deceased, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, who eulogized the departed elder statesman.

Also former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, former Minister of Defence, General Alani Akinrinade, former minister of Foreign Affairs, General Ike Nwachukwu, former governors of Ogun and Delta states, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, paid glowing tributes to Adebayo.

Others include Minister for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, founder, O’dua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Dr. Fredrick Fasehun, former Minister of Health, Dr. Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, Spokesman of Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, former Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Demola Seriki, wife of former governor of Ondo, Mrs. Olufunke Agagu, former AIG of Police, Mr. Tunji Alapini, Chairman Elizade University, Chief Michael Ade Ojo and Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as well as business moguls, Chief Samuel Adedoyin and Rasak Okoya

In his remarks, Tinubu said Adebayo lived for peace and dedicated his life to the course of development of the South-West and Nigeria.Ukiwe said Adebayo’s integrity consistency and hard work turned Nigeria around, adding that he was a bridge builder whose handshake across the Niger goes a long way to foster peace in the country.

Ambode said: “On behalf of the people of Lagos State, I bring my deepest condolences to the family of a great leader of the Western Region, a nationalist, a part finder, a God fearing man, a trail blazer that set the new generation of Yoruba leaders in the right part. That we are able to come here is not by coincidence, but the mere fact that he would ordinarily have been marking his 89th birthday today.”

Meanwhile, Niyi said yesterday that consultations are ongoing with military authorities and governors of the South West on the burial arrangements, pointing out however, that he cannot be buried before Easter.
