Fashola denies frustrating Lagos over airport road reconstruction (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2muhy89

Murtala Muhammed International Airport

The Minister of Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has debunked the allegation that it was frustrating the developmental initiatives of Lagos State Government regarding reconstruction of the international airport road from Oshodi.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode recently accused the ministry of frustrating his administration’s efforts to carry out a total reconstruction of the road from Oshodi.

Ambode reportedly accused the ministry and security agents of denying the state government access to the Presidential Lodge in Lagos, six months after President Muhammadu Buhari gave approval.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Communications, Hakeem Bello, said Fashola had last year approved the use of the Ministry of Works yard at Oworonsoki for the state government to create a lay-by to ease traffic.

It further said Fashola also approved the state government’s request to manage the street lighting on the 3rd Mainland Bridge to support the security initiatives of the state.

It said the ministry also supported the approval of a World Bank loan of $200 million to Lagos, a request denied it by the previous administration.

On the airport road project, it said the state government had presented a request for four roads it wished to take over, which was inconsistent with its conditions for states to take over roads within their jurisdiction.

“As far as the Presidential Lodge is concerned, it is under the management of the Presidency and not the ministry.

“After the approval by Mr. President that the Presidential Lodge be handed over to the state government, there was a directive to the ministry to work out the modalities for handing over.”

Bello stated that the ministry had prepared a vesting instrument to convey the transfer and all that was needed was a survey plan, adding that since the Presidential Lodge is a high security location and officials of the ministry also required security clearance to enter to do any works, access to the lodge was not under the ministry’s control.

He said the ministry remained committed to serving the government and people of Lagos State and would treat all their requests on merit in accordance with necessary due process.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen. Sani Usman said some Boko Haram terrorists were killed while two others were arrested in joint military operations by Nigerian and Cameroonian soldiers along the border areas of Borno State.

The two-day joint border operations were led by Col. Dourai and Lt-Col. Mohaman of the Cameroonian Defence Forces, with troops drawn from Cameroon’s Battalion Rapid Intervention (BRI) and 151 Task Force Battalion of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army.

Usman in a statement yesterday in Maiduguri said that the suspected Boko Haram terrorists were hiding within the border areas of Cameroon and Nigeria.

The statement reads: “During the operations, which ended yesterday, troops of the two countries cleared Siyara, Kote, Sigawa before proceeding to Bulabundibe town. Other places include Adeleke, Tchatike and Lamukura in the border areas of Borno.

“We came in contact with Boko Haram terrorists and neutralised many of them, apprehended many, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.”He added: “The troops also recovered a Toyota Canter vehicle, seven dane guns and five Boko Haram flags, four vehicle tyres, two motorcycles and motor spare parts.”Dourai said the operations were carried out to secure both countries’ border areas from attack by terrorists.

FG’s intervention in Arik belated, says Senate (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2kaOVzf

PHOTO: Arik Air

AMCON rules out airline as national carrier
The Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions yesterday reviewed the ugly details that crippled the operations of Arik Air and submitted that the intervention announced by the Federal Government last week was late and belated.

The committee, which however expressed support for the intervention noted that the airline could have averted the unfortunate situation if it had paid attention to issues of financial management and applied best practices fiscal management.

Chairman of the committee, Rafiu Ibrahim said the Senate had always stood in support of policies that would promote the welfare and living standards of Nigerians.

This was just as the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) informed the committee that government’s intervention in the affairs of the airline was not intended to acquire and convert it to a national carrier but to protect the workers from losing their jobs.

AMCON’s Managing Director, Ahmed Kuru, revealed that contrary to earlier claims, the troubled airline is owing AMCON N147 billion and other local banks to the tune of at least N165 billion adding that the foreign debts of the airline stood at $81 million.

The AMCON boss also told the committee members that the airline is owing over 2,000 staff seven months salary arrears. He said negotiations were currently ongoing on how to immediately resolve the arrears.

Kuru also revealed that of the 30 aircraft owned by Arik, only 10 were operational. According to him, the airline frequently relied on collection of ticket fees from passengers before they could buy aviation fuel. He partly blamed the incessant cancellation and delay of flight on its inability to buy aviation fuel.

Kuru, while dismissing claims that the Federal Government was planning to make the airline a national carrier, said it was too problematic for any government to handle.

He said within the next two to three weeks, the new management of the airline will put 15 to 16 aircraft back to the 18 nationwide routes.

He said: “Within the next two to three weeks, Arik Air should have up to 15 or 16 aircrafts flying. Arik Air cannot compete internationally.

They do not have the kind of services other airlines have.

“Despite all the things we have done to ensure that Arik Air stays in business, they have not done their part in meeting their own obligations.

“They have refused to pay salaries and also refused to ensure that their loans are repaid. We could not just sit back and allow an important airline with about 30 aircrafts and covers 55 per cent of all routes in Nigeria to go down. From the records, Arik makes over N7 billion annually.’’

Newly appointed chief executive officer of the airline, Mr. Roy Ilegbodu, who described the state of the airline as alarming disclosed that its performance stood at 15 per cent as against 25 per cent minimal requirement in the aviation sector.
Apart from AMCON, Arik is also currently indebted to Standard Chartered, Zenith Bank, Ecobank and Access Bank.

Anxiety mounts over closure of Abuja airport (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2kFR9VG

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport

• More Foreign Airlines Shun Kaduna Airport
• Hard Times Await Travellers
• FG, Kaduna Govt Assures Of Adequate Security
• Police Deploys 400 Patrol Vehicles On Kaduna-Abuja Road

With the planned closure of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) on March 8, air travelers to Abuja and environs may be in for tough times, as foreign airlines plying the route are pulling out of the plan to divert traffic to Kaduna airport.

The foreign airlines, made up of African and European carriers, are rejecting Kaduna airport, citing security and logistic concerns. The Federal Government has, however, allayed the fears of foreign airlines, saying adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure safety of lives and property.

Kaduna State government has also called on foreign airlines to have a rethink on their position, assuring all air passengers of safety in and out of the state.Director of Publicity and Press in the Ministry of Aviation, James Odaudu in an interview with The Guardian, yesterday, said adequate security has been put in place by the security sub-committee headed by the Police

He said: “there should be no fear whatsoever on the security of the Abuja-Kaduna road, because the Police is deploying 400 patrol vehicles along that road, which translates to patrol vehicles at every 2km on the road.

“In addition to that, there will be air patrol both on the rail and road leading to Kaduna and security escort would be attached to every bus and rail coach conveying passengers to the airport.”

Odaudu said two weeks before the final closure of the airport, all stakeholders, including all the airlines would be taken to the Kaduna airport for on-the-spot assessment, adding that the ongoing work on the construction of the new terminal building would be completed before the closure.

He said: “Part of the complaints of the foreign airlines is that the terminal building at the Kaduna Airport is too small, however as it is now the Minister has assured that the new terminal building would be ready before the closure of the Abuja airport, but in case it is not ready the old terminal building can contain 500 passengers at a go, and should in case they exceed the 500, the VIP lounge would also be used to screen passengers.”

Director Defence Information (DDI) Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar said the Defence Headquarters is equally concerned about the expressed reservations by aviation stakeholders, and has put in place measures to guarantee security to all on the road.

The Federal Government has announced diversion of flights to Kaduna airport to pave way for the repairs of the NAIN runway for six weeks. The decision of the airlines to shun Kaduna airport is already generating disquiet in some quarters, as air travellers in and out of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and environs will, besides travelling about 250kilometres by road to Kaduna, have to spend more to Lagos to catch up with foreign airlines, if their destinations are outside the country.

Also, ancillary aviation services are in for severe downturn, if not losses, on account of the development. Ground handling company, Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCOL) has foreseen loses to the tune of N70million for the closure of Abuja runway and decision by cargo airlines to suspend operations during the period.

All of these are coming as the Federal Government has said there was no going back on the planned closure.Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, however, assured that the Federal government would ensure the total rehabilitation of the Abuja Airport runway for smooth operations and deliver it in six weeks.

Meanwhile, some foreign airlines have informed the authorities of plans not to fly to Kaduna.British Airways on Tuesday announced decision to have its London-Abuja flights diverted to Lagos, citing inadequate facilities at the Kaduna airport and its lack of in-flight catering services.

British Airways’ Country Manager, Kola Olayinka, said the Lagos alternative was the best option for customers during the closure of the runway.Olayinka said several factors were considered before the decision was reached, which include the safety and security of passengers, as well as key operational issues.

Rather than divert elsewhere, South African Airways disclosed plans to suspend its Abuja operations during the six weeks duration. The airline in a letter to the Minister of State for Aviation, signed by its Acting Chief Commercial Officer, Aaron Munetsi, said the operations to Abuja would resume on April 18, 2017.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Nigeria, Dr. Valerii Aleksandruk, yesterday has expressed worries over the closure; saying though he was not against government’s move to carry out maintenance of the airport, he was afraid of the impact the decision may have on businesses and other activities.

According to him: “You don’t ask me about the likely impact, ask airlines, such as British Airline, Air France and others, if they would fly to Kaduna. I cannot say how it will affect our activities for now. That will depend on airlines’ operations. It depends on how they operate within that period.
“I heard some of them would fly only to Lagos. We can only wait till March 8, when the policy will take effect to know how it is going to affect our activities.”

Navy pledges increased support for Dolphin Club, as La Liga group championship ends

http://ift.tt/2jDRYPS

Gift Willy was first runner up at the La Liga Group Golf Championship held at the Navy Golf Club, Ojo…recently.

The Nigerian Navy leadership has pledged improved support for the Dolphin Golf Club, Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, which just rounded up a two-day tournament organized by the La Liga group to mark its end of year 2016 activities.

Speaking at the end of the tournament, Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ferguson Bobai, affirmed that sports is a good way of keeping fit, adding that the Nigerian Navy will continue to lend a helping hand in sports because it goes a long way in contributing to the mental alertness of her men.

While acceding to the request of the Club in putting their Mikano generating set in order, the admiral called for fair play in competitions and understanding among participants, as he looks forward to getting involved in the game of golf.

Earlier, president of the La Liga group in the Dolphin Golf Club, Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, Engr. Francis Olo, disclosed that the group would host a Pro-Am championship at the end of 2017.

Olo said his confidence stemmed from the fact that the 2016 end of year tournament attracted 30 professionals from around the country, adding that Tobias Chidi with a net score of 69 emerged the champion of the La Liga Group end of the year golf tournament.Willy Gift with a net score of 71 finished second, while Francis Ekpe with a net score of 73 finished third.

He revealed that the group was formed to bring together all the members of the club who belonged to different groups (Hexagon and Max Fly) and were sponsored by different outfits.

Olo said it was easy to bring the groups together after their sponsors stopped bankrolling their activities.Although they expected about 20 pros in the championship, Olo said the 30 that showed up proved that the tournament was gaining the confidence of golfers around the country.

“We are very proud of the achievement and the progress we have made and everything will be done to make it better with more professionals taking part. And aside playing the game, the tournament is also to foster friendship among the military and their civilian counterparts.”

Beyonce is pregnant — and this time, she’s expecting twins with her husband, rap mogul Jay Z.

The pop superstar — who already has a five-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, with Jay Z — announced the news to her more than 92 million followers on Instagram on Wednesday.

Clad in panties and a bra under a flowing veil, Beyonce posted a picture of herself kneeling beside a human-size floral arrangement, her hands cradling her rounded belly.

“We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over,” the 35-year-old singer wrote. “We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for all your well wishes,” she added, signing with Jay Z.

In a timeline sure to trigger intrigue, Beyonce announced the pregnancy a little more than nine months after her last album “Lemonade” — in which she strongly hinted that Jay Z was unfaithful.

Beyonce released “Lemonade,” an album intertwined with a film, on April 23. One lyric warns an unfaithful man of a “final warning” that he’s “gonna lose your wife” if his behavior doesn’t change.

A sullen Jay Z appears at the end of the film to embrace her, suggesting reconciliation.

“Lemonade” is in the running for album of the year at the Grammy Awards on February 12, where Beyonce leads the nominations.

Her baby bump will presumably be even more evident two months later, when she is set for the first time to headline Coachella, the two-weekend festival in southern California that is among the world’s premier live music events.

– Previous miscarriage –
Typically reserved, Beyonce has openly spoken about the pain of a miscarriage before she gave birth to Blue Ivy, saying the heartbeat she had heard during her first pregnancy was “the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.”

News of the twins prompted an avalanche of postings on social media — which included a guessing game on the children’s names.

Twitter reported half a million tweets on Beyonce within the first 45 minutes as she became the world’s top trending item.

“When Beyonce is pregnant I am pregnant,” the popular YouTube comedian Tre Melvin tweeted, calling the news a “marvelous start” to February, marked in the United States as Black History Month.

Several of Beyonce’s fans — presumably critics of new US President Donald Trump — declared the announcement the happiest development so far of 2017.

Some fans imagined the prospect of a new Jackson-style musical family, with Blue Ivy as the big sister and guide to the twins.

Beyonce was a music prodigy herself when she was growing up in Houston. Then known as Beyonce Knowles, she started her career as the teenage lead singer of Destiny’s Child.

She and Jay Z are among the most commercially successful figures in music, with a combined net worth estimated at $1 billion.

While enjoying a wide following, Beyonce has increasingly felt comfortable showing her political side. She and Jay Z hit the trail for Hillary Clinton in her unsuccessful campaign against Trump last year.

The first single on “Lemonade,” the bouncy New Orleans-inspired track “Formation,” was accompanied by a video that throws support behind the Black Lives Matter campaign against police brutality.

Non-stick chemicals common in fast food packaging

Burgers, fries, tacos and pastries come wrapped in grease-proof paper and boxes that often contain non-stick chemicals that may be able to leach into food, US researchers said Wednesday. The study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters tested more than 400 samples from 27 fast food chains in the United States.

Almost half of paper wrappers and 20 percent of paperboard samples — such as boxes for fries and pizza — contained fluorine, a marker for highly fluorinated chemicals used in stain-resistant carpets, non-stick cookware and waterproof outdoor apparel.

“Wrappers for Tex-Mex food, desserts and breads were the most likely to contain fluorine,” said the report. The study did not show any specific harm to human health from exposure to these chemicals — known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) — in food wrappers.

But researchers warned that exposure to some PFASs has been associated with cancer, thyroid disease, immune suppression, low birth weight, and decreased fertility according to prior studies.

“These chemicals have been linked with numerous health problems, so it’s concerning that people are potentially exposed to them in food,” said lead author Laurel Schaider, an environmental chemist at the Silent Spring Institute.

“Children are especially at risk for health effects because their developing bodies are more vulnerable to toxic chemicals.”

Six of the samples contained a long-chain PFAS called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), also known as C8, even though several major US manufacturers agreed to stopping using C8 compounds in food packaging due to health hazards, after a 2011 US Food and Drug Administration review.

Researchers also detected some shorter-chain PFAS compounds, which have been increasingly used as replacements for the longer chain PFASs.

“The replacement compounds are equally persistent and have not been shown to be safe for human health,” said co-author Arlene Blum, founder of the Green Science Policy Institute.

“That’s why we need to reduce the use of the entire class of highly fluorinated compounds. The good news is there are non-fluorinated alternatives available.” About one in three American kids eat fast food every day.

The United States began phasing out certain PFASs in 2000, but other countries still produce them, and they tend to linger in the environment for long periods after being discarded in landfills.

Prior studies have shown that substances in food packaging can migrate into food.
