Buhari notifies NASS on his resumption of duty

http://ift.tt/2lSYROB

President Muhammadu Buhari while signing a letter informing the National Assembly of his resumption of duty on Monday, March 13, 2017.

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed a letter informing the National Assembly of his resumption of duty, Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, said on Monday.

Adesina, who made this known in a statement issued in Abuja, said the transmission of the letter was in compliance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution.

He said that the President had formally transmitted the letter on his resumption to the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“I have resumed my functions as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with effect from Monday, March 13, 2017, after my vacation,’’ Adesina quoted part of the letter as saying.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the President Buhari returned to the country on Friday after a successful medical vacation in London.

Togo fuel price hikes hit household budgets

http://ift.tt/2llT96a

Emmanuel Sogadji has a message for the government in Togo from people who are being squeezed by fuel price rises: “Enough is enough!”

The consumer group he heads has given the administration two weeks to put the prices back to what they were, as the hike is “hitting households where it hurts”, he said.

“The authorities don’t care about people, who are living in poverty,” he added.

The Combat for Political Change (CAP 2015), Togo’s main opposition grouping, on Saturday organised a “peace march” in the capital of Lome to demand an end to the past month’s rises.

Thousands of opposition supporters and civil society groups took to the streets for several hours, chanting anti-government slogans and holding a rally.

Security forces watched over the demonstration but it passed off without incident after a previous protest in February turned violent, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Motorcycle-taxi drivers blocked major intersections and were dispersed by police.

– Knock-on effect –
The government increased the price of fuel by about 10 percent on February 27, in the second such rise in the space of a month.

A litre of premium petrol jumped from 476 to 524 CFA francs ($0.77 to $0.85, or 0.72 euros to 0.8 euros).

Diesel went up from 478 to 526 CFA francs while regular petrol was 425 but is now 468 CFA francs.

Jean-Pierre Fabre, who leads the CAP 2015 coalition, told AFP on Saturday: “We’re asking for the government to simply return to the old prices.”

The government has said the hikes are necessary because the price of crude has gone up on the international market, from $38.38 in January 2016 to $55 in January 2017.

At the same time the dollar has strengthened.

Sogadji called the decision “unfair” and alleged that the government’s claim of subsidising fuel at the pump was false.

Price rises have already had a knock-on effect, particularly in the home-grown food industry. Items such as corn and even firewood have increased because of higher transport costs, he added.

– Calls to cancel –
Two-thirds of Togo’s nearly eight million people rely on subsistence farming and more than half of the population live in poverty, according to World Bank figures from 2015.

Unemployment is running at 29 percent, according to some Togolese economists, with young people hit especially hard.

The west African country, which borders Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso, mainly imports its petroleum products.

Evariste Ekadji, a 33-year-old taxi driver, said he has had to put up his prices, particularly for clients wanting to travel long distances.

“The government should cancel new pump prices because we are suffering in this country,” he added

Anani Ekue, a 27-year-old motorcycle-taxi driver, said he has done the same “to avoid losses” while Cossi Djiwan has taken further measures to cut costs.

The 42-year-old, who works as an accountant for a security firm, said he has stopped using his car to get to work every day because of the increased cost of fuel is eating his budget.

“I’ve downsized to my motorbike, which doesn’t consume a lot of petrol,” he said.

Fulbert Attisso, president of the Another Togo opposition party, said “this increase in the cost of fuel at the pump is ill-timed, given the difficulties people are facing”.

“The authorities should cancel this decision out of necessity,” he said.

Falana condemns arrest, parading of Peace Corps Commandant (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2mofKAz

The National Commandant, Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC), Dr Dickson Akoh

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has condemned the recent arrest and parading of Mr Dickson Akor, the National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, by the Nigerian Police. Falana spoke with newsmen on Saturday in Abuja after securing the release of Akor from police custody.

The police in a combined operation with the Depart of State Services and the Nigerian Army on Feb. 28, raided the headquarters of the Peace Corps of Nigeria in Abuja.

During the operation, they arrested Akor and 48 other members of the corps. A statement issued by the Police Spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said intelligence reports showed that the Peace Corps and other similar groups were acquiring weapons and conducting covert trainings in different locations across the country.

In the statement, Moshood said such action violated a 2013 gazette of the Federal Government that banned such groups. Falana, who described police invasion of the headquarters of the Peace Corps of Nigeria as illegal and unconstitutional, said that the organisation was not operating illegally.

He said, “generally, the parade of criminal suspects in the country by the Police is illegal. “In this case, apart from the registration of its trustees under the Companies and Allied Matters Act, there are two judgments of the Federal High Court restraining the police from harassing and intimidating members of the organization.’’

The human rights lawyer said that he was also negotiating for the re-opening of the office of the Peace Corps of Nigeria. “They must be allowed to operate under the law and we will get to that state where the police will appreciate that Nigeria is under-policed.

“We need volunteers, young men and women who should be organised by the state to handle those duties that will not require the intervention of the Police,’’ he said.

The human rights lawyer emphasised that crime like terrorism, herdsmen attack, armed robbery and kidnapping thrive in the country because the country is under-policed.

“As at 2011, the Federal Government of Nigeria decided to engage the services of 380,000 police personnel, between then and now, only 10, 000 are being employed.

“There is no way you can police about 180 million people with barely 380, 000 police personnel out of which about 120, 000 are guiding the elite and corporate bodies in the country.

“I thought the police should have embraced a body like the Peace Corps of Nigeria to make their job easier because the Nigerian Police operates under very difficult situations.

“Most communities are not policed, so herdsmen move into farms and kill people. “Nigerians have not developed a litigation culture of challenging the killing of every citizen either directly or indirectly for which the government can be blamed,’’ Falana said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Assembly on Nov. 24, 2016 passed a bill, which gives approval for the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps as an agency under the Ministry of Interior. The Nigerian Peace Corps Bill seeks to empower, develop and provide gainful employment for the youths.

Om Puri
Earlier this year, Bollywood mourned the death of veteran actor, Om Puri. As part of the 89th Academy Awards, Hollywood acknowledged the departed souls in a special segment. The actor, who has worked in several Hollywood films, was one of those honoured in a montage at the event.

His family even released an official statement expressing their gratitude for the same. The gesture was indeed great, but one must notice that the late actor was not mentioned in the several Bollywood award shows that happened in the past few months.

The Biography Of Yinka Davies [Age, Life Profile & Net Worth]

http://ift.tt/2mvrMVu

p

Yinka Davies (born July 16, 1970) is a Nigerian vocalist, dancer, lyricist and judge of reality show, Nigerian Idol. Yinka has been in the Nigerian entertainment industry for 28 years.

Slogan – Time has come to speak up for ourselves.

Father – Benin Republic/Sierra Leone

Lisabi clan who moved to Lagos because he was originally from Nigeria. .

Mother – from Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Paternal grandmother – from the Shagamu royal family

These origins affect her musical influences. She remembers that her father had a guitar. She grew up to the sounds of Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash, Elvis and Jimmy Dean when she was growing up as this was the music that her father liked to listen to.

As she grew older in the 1970s and 1980s the radio at her grandmother’s house was always tuned to Radio Lagos which played a variety of African music from Manu Dibango (Cameroun – Makossa), Mmaman Shatta (traditional Northern Nigerian musician), Dan Maria Jos (Northern Nigeria), Orlando Julius (southern Nigeria – highlife), Hadjia Funtua (northern Nigeria), Victor Uwaifo (southern Nigeria – Joromi), Fela (southern Nigeria – Afrobeat) to mention few.

She also remembers watching the late TV personality Art Alade (father of Dare Art-Alade) who had a popular television program called the Bar Beach Show featuring various musicians as well as his own resident band. It became obvious to Yinka that there was a lack of female musicians – in the 1980s she listened to Salawa Abeni (Yoruba) and Dora Ifudu (popular musician in RnB genre) who was one of the female musicians that influenced her.

In 1992, the organisers of the Fame music award spotted her as an all-round artist from her work in theatre, video, choreography, background vocals for various Nigerian artist and nominated and gave her their first Upcoming artist award.

The management of a club in Lagos, Bread and Butter Jazz club involved her in the last presentation as a club in an effort to introduce a new renaissance artist called Lagbaja and she was heavily involved in the production of this artiste’s first album called Side by Side which was released in 1993. She subsequently concentrated more on music because this demanded more of her time. It was during this period she also collaborated with Nigerian recording artistes such as Mike Okri (RnB), Shina Peters (Afro juju), Blackky (Reggae) and many others not only as a backup vocalist but also a choreographer for their music videos.

Another great musician she worked with was the late Geraldo Pino (originally from Sierra Leone) and Etienne T Boy (Cameroonian) who worked with Pino.

January 21, 1994 was a major turning point as she unfortunately had a collision with a taxi in Lagos when crossing the road. In her words she “crossed the road and hit a car”. This resulted in major surgery which severely affected her ability to dance. She was in between singing and dancing doing a lot of background vocals for other musicians. Music to her was static in comparison with painting, sculpture, theatre and dancing where she felt she could fuel her energy to its fullest.

The dearth of female musicians on the Nigerian music scene and Yinka’s dedication to continuing her craft is that a woman must be seen, heard, respected and celebrated in Nigeria. She wants to be remembered as a Nigerian who is constantly seen, heard and respected.

Consistency has been upper most in her cause, she is determined to be a light, beacon and example to the upcoming Nigerian female artiste and perhaps this is why she did not concentrate on breaking into the international scene until now.

Like a mother hen she wanted to be an inspiration to her female associates in the music industry and as these upcoming female musicians launch their careers she can now concentrate on her pursuit of breaking into the international scene. To mention a few of the Nigerian female artistes she regards as associates, even though they are not necessarily her contemporaries in the music industry, there are Asa, Tiwa Savage, Omawunmi, Waje etc.

Yinka is a bridge from the old (where there were very few female musical role models) to the new Nigerian music scene where the female is asserting herself and claiming her rightful position.

Jesus absence offers Aguero chance of redemption

http://ift.tt/2kQUTBF

Manchester City's Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero / OLI SCARFF / AFP

Pep Guardiola faces a double selection quandary as he prepares for an FA Cup fifth round visit to in-form Championship club Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Manchester City manager, still active on three fronts as he seeks silverware in his first season in the English game, will be without injured Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus who broke a metatarsal in this week’s league victory at Bournemouth.

The talented teenager, who had scored three goals in as many league games since his January arrival, may not play again this season, with estimates putting his rehabilitation period at two to three months.

Jesus has been flown to Barcelona to undergo treatment with Ramon Cugat, the City manager’s physician of choice who has overseen the rehabilitation of a number of the club’s players this season.

But Guardiola’s decision as to Jesus’s replacement is complicated by the looming Champions League last 16 first leg tie with French club Monaco, which takes place at the Etihad on Tuesday.

Thereafter, and assuming they do not have to schedule an FA Cup replay with Huddersfield, City have a 12-day break until they are in action in a league visit to struggling Sunderland on March 5, with Guardiola using that opportunity to take his players to Abu Dhabi for a period of warm weather training.

– ‘Sergio important’ –
But, before then, Guardiola must decide whether to recall talismanic veteran Sergio Aguero as Jesus’s replacement — and run the potential risk of an injury ruling him out of the Monaco game — or recall Nigerian understudy Kelechi Iheanacho who, despite a prolific scoring record, appears to have fallen out of favour with Guardiola in recent weeks.

Aguero appears likely to win the battle for selection and be granted his first start since Jesus broke into the first team picture with an exhilarating appearance when he came on as a substitute against Tottenham on January 21.

After the victory over Bournemouth, Guardiola acknowledged the important role he expects Aguero to fill over the remainder of the season.

“I know how important Sergio is,” he said. “I did yesterday, the day before, the last week, the last month.”

Meanwhile, Jesus’s team mate and countryman Fernandinho has revealed he is hopeful the striker may be able to return before the end of the season.

“He was treading badly with his right foot, but we will see what the doctors will say,” said Fernandinho.

“We are all hoping it was nothing serious and hopefully he can come back as soon as possible.”

Guardiola has fielded strong line-ups in the FA Cup until this fifth round stage and the game also appears a perfect opportunity for captain Vincent Kompany, who started the fourth round win at Crystal Palace to continue his comeback from injury.

Huddersfield, meanwhile, will be without their influential Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy who is on loan from City and forbidden by FA rules from playing against his parent club in the competition.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner, who has led his club to within four points of automatic promotion to a top flight they last occupied in 1972, admits he will rotate his squad with a place in the Premier League far more important than a possible place in the sixth round of the cup.

“We didn’t do it only in the Cup, also since the beginning of December when we started our rotation,” he said.

“We don’t have the biggest squad or budget, so to keep everybody healthy, we have rotated for 10-12 weeks.

“It doesn’t matter if we win or lose, it is if it makes sense for the next game and we will probably make changes against City.”

Somalia’s new leader faces delicate balancing act

http://ift.tt/2kVXywi

Somalia's newly elected President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as Farmajo, address supporters after his victory on Wednesday (AFP Photo/MUSTAFA HAJI ABDINUR)<br />

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s victory in Somalia’s presidential election last week brought joyous crowds into the streets of Mogadishu, a testament to the former prime minister’s enduring popularity.

But analysts warn that the iron will and nationalist discourse that Somalis fondly remember from his time as premier could be Mohamed’s biggest obstacles when it comes to rebuilding the world’s most notorious failed state.

Mohamed, who is better known by his nickname Farmajo, or “Cheese”, has inherited an administration that has limited control over Somali territory due to the presence of Shabaab Islamists, and is heavily propped up by the international community.

This fragile core is further weakened by deeply entrenched corruption and the rivalries in a maze-like clan structure that dominate Somali politics.

“There is a super-sized expectation, but the problems that bedevilled Somalia for three decades won’t vanish because Farmajo is the president,” said Abdirashid Hashi, a researcher at the Heritage Institute.

– Why so popular? –
While prime minister for a mere eight months in 2010-11, Farmajo swiftly won over Somalis with his efforts to improve governance.

His resolute nationalism, in which he tried to revive Somali pride in a nation best-known for anarchy and bloodshed, was also well regarded.

He culled the number of government ministers and banned non-essential foreign trips by officials, and launched a program for stamping out corruption.

Farmajo’s image also received a boost from the improved security in Mogadishu which saw Shabaab militants driven from the capital a few months after he stepped down as premier.

“It was under Farmajo that the groundwork was laid for this victory,” said Roland Marchal, a researcher at Sciences Po university in Paris.

He was also highly popular within the military, not least because his government made sure to regularly pay soldiers, a rarity in Somalia’s turbulent history.

– Risky nationalism –
Farmajo inherits a Somalia still operating under an interim constitution, with little in the way of solid administrative structures: the army, central bank, fiscal administration and electoral commission remain rudimentary.

While Farmajo favours a strong central government, Somalia has in recent years shifted towards a system of federalism.

The building of a state will require careful negotiations with powerful regions such as Puntland, Jubaland and Galmudug to finalise the constitution, properly define the federal agenda — which has already been a bone of contention — and stabilise the country.

“The fatal error of past Somali presidents has been to believe they can govern simply because they have a title,” said Matt Bryden, a Somalia specialist with the Nairobi-based Sahan thinktank.

“The federal member states can’t be ignored. Most are still embryonic but they have presence on the ground, they collect taxes, and they control the paramilitary forces that are fighting Al-Shabaab.”

– Tension with Ethiopia –
Another tricky issue Farmajo will have to navigate is Somalia’s tense relationship with its powerful neighbour Ethiopia.

The two nations have a long history of conflict over territory. Ethiopia has on several occasions sent troops into Somalia to fight Islamists and its current powerful military presence in the country and perceived political meddling irks many.

Analysts say that many young lawmakers voted for Farmajo because they are fed up with seeing Addis Ababa intervene in Somalia’s affairs.

But analysts say antagonising Ethiopia could backfire: the country could withdraw its military from fragile border zones and thus offer a respite to militants, or it could lend its support to Somali regions hostile to central government.

“If he wants to re-adjust the relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia, he has to be very careful,” said Rashid Abdi of the International Crisis Group.

“If he uses the old anti-Ethiopia rhetoric, he is going to quickly run into trouble.”

– Lessons learned? –
During his short term as prime minister, Farmajo’s direct style made him few friends among the country’s old guard of politicians, many of whom were happy to see the back of him.

But his surprise presidential victory after a tortuous six-month voting process — marked by claims of vote-buying and corruption — may prove that he has learned to navigate Somalia’s corridors of power.

“These last days, he has held lots of consultations,” Abdi said.

“It does not look like someone who is going to rush into decisions or act like a disrupter.”

Court dissolves 15-yr-old marriage over abandonment, denial of conjugal rights

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Lagos – A Customary Court in Agege, Lagos State, on Tuesday dissolved the 15-year-old marriage between Kasoki Olekanma and his wife Ibukun over denial of conjugal rights.

The court also dissolved the marriage on grounds that Ibukun abandoned her husband and her four children.

President of the court, Mr Phillips Williams, held that the marriage could no longer stand because “love which is the key ingredient of a valid marriage no longer exists.

“It leaves no one in doubt that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

“Consequently, I hereby order that the marriage between Kasoki Olekanma and Ibukun contracted in 2002 stands dissolved.

“The respondent (Ibukun) is hereby ordered to vacate the home of the petitioner, return her bride price and revert to her maiden or other name of her choice,’’ he said.

He urged both parties to keep the peace and not to threaten themselves.

Olekanma, 51, had filed a suit claiming that his wife was no longer interested in the marriage and had deserted him and their four children.

He said his wife lacked respect and had also failed in her conjugal duties, having left their home since Feb. 11, 2013 on her own volition.

“Prior to the time Ibukun left home, she told me she had secured a job in Ado-Ekiti.

“I asked her how the children will be taken care of in her absence, but she told me to take care of them since I was used to doing so

“I waited for Ibukun for three and half years, but she never returned home. She abandoned me and the children without looking back,” he said

Olekanma, urged the court to dissolve the marriage, give him custody of their four children and to award him any other consequential orders as the court may deem fit.

The respondent (Ibukun) was absent in court, but sent a message that she was no longer interested in the marriage and that the dissolution could go on in her absence.

Rangers target CAF Champions’ League group stage – Foster

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Lagos – Rangers International FC of Enugu is ready to surpass its previous achievements in the CAF Champions League and has been mandated to reach the group stage, a club official has said.

Rangers’ Media officer Foster Chime said in Lagos that the club was committed to the course of delivering on the mandate.

Nigerian representative in the CAF Champions League defied all odds against them to pull a surprising 1-1 away draw against Algerian side, JS Saoura in their first match.

The flying Antelopes are arguably one of the most successful clubs in Nigeria having been the champions of the Premier League in Nigeria in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, and were winners of 2015/2016.

The team has a rich history of playing in the CAF Champions League with nine appearances 1971, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1982, 1983, 1985, 2006 and 2013.

Rangers were finalist in 1975 edition, losing 1-3 on aggregate to Hafia FC Guinea. The Coal City Boys were also three times semi-finalists 1976, 1978 and 1982.

The club’s last campaign in the CAF Champions League was in 2013 when they were abruptly knocked out in the second round of the competition.

Speaking about the match against the North African opposition, Foster said the team had hectic moments in the far state where his team played the match.

“The venue of the match is like travelling from Nigeria to Italy and it was about four hours drive from Algiers and about 28 hours by road.

“The timing of the match itself was unfavourable as we played by 7 p.m. when the weather was extremely cold amid intimidation and
provocation by the home fans.

“We were able to get the result just by the grace of God because the North African opponents in are clubs’ championships are very difficult to manage.

“However, in spite of all the odds against us we had a decent outing,’’ he said.

Foster said that it was not yet time for celebration for the team as the return leg would determine the fate of both clubs.

“Although we got the result through our nose, but the team we are playing is also a good side, so it is not yet over until we play the return leg.

“The club we played against is used to playing in the cold weather so we may have to play them maybe by 2 p.m. when the weather is hot rather than 4 p.m.

“They are a tough side and we must do everything to go past them but it is too early to predict what will happen until we play the match,’’ he said.

Foster said that the club had received enough motivation from the Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, adding that the club was ready to have a decent campaign in the competition.

“We have a very strong support from our amiable governor who has given us the charge to go all out and do the nation proud.

“The governor has given us the mandate to ensure qualification to the group stage of the competition which is achievable.

“We’ll ensure that we get to the group stage which is the money spinning stage and it is two matches away.

“After this, we will set another target because CAF Champions League is a tough competition but with the kind of support we have from the government, we are expected to go far,’’ he said. (NAN)

Pastor celebrates Valentine with 500 vulnerable persons in Kaduna

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Kaduna – A Kaduna based Pastor, Yohanna Buru, on Tuesday urged Nigerians to show love to the less previlleged including the handicap, orphans and those displaced by crisis.

Buru made the appeal when he led Christian leaders of Christ Evangelical Intercessory Fellowship Ministry, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna to various orphanage and rehabilitation centres in Kaduna, to mark the Valentine Day.

“We chose this category of human beings with different deformities to celebrate with them every year simply because we felt they are the people of God that really need our love, care and assistance at this seasons.

“Many of them have been neglected and rejected by the society due to their nature, which makes life extremely difficult for them.”

According the clergyman, the best way to celebrate valentine is to spend the whole day with the less-privileged in the society, including the blind, deaf and dump, lepers, widows, prison inmates and IDPs.

Buru said “As people around the world celebrate valentine with their loved ones, sharing beautiful flowers and many good things of joy and happiness, we deemed it fit to select less privileged persons and orphans, to make them understand that we love them.

“We pray for God to help them overcome all their daily challenges.

“I celebrate the valentine with over 500 inmates, refugees, physically challenged persons by feeding them and sensitizing them on the importance of sharing love irrespective of one’s religion or cultural background.”

He called on wealthy individual, government and humanitarian organizations to always offer assistance to those in need.

Shell, Agip ask court to dismiss forfeiture order obtained by EFCC

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Abuja – Shell Nigeria Exploration and Nigeria Agip Exploration have asked the Federal High Court, Abuja, to discharge the order of forfeiture of OPL 245 which it granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice John Tsoho on Jan. 26, granted an order of interim forfeiture of Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL 245) to the Federal Government pending investigation and prosecution of suspects in the $1.1 billion Malabu Oil scam.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Tuesday, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Johnson Ojogbane, informed the court that he was unable to respond to the two applications filed by the the applicants on the matter.

Ojogbane said that his inability was, “due to circumstances beyond our control”.
He applied for an adjournment to enable the prosecution to respond so that the two applications could be taken on its merit.

Prof. Olaniwun Ajayi (SAN), counsel to Shell, told the court that he had filed two applications in respect of the matter.

Ajayi said the first application was seeking the discharge, dismissal or striking our of the order of forfeiture to the Federal Government which the court made pending the conclusion of the matter.

The second, he said, prayed for an order staying or suspending the effects of the interim order made by this court in favour of the EFCC directing that OPL 245 be managed by the Department of Petroleum Resources.

Ajayi said that the execution of the action by the EFCC constituted a gross abuse of office and court processess and that the process of procuring the ex parte order was unconstitutional and unlawful.

He said that the respondents misrepresented and surpressed material facts in obtaining the order, and urged the court to discharge the order in the interest of justice.

Ajayi reminded the court that the prosecution had said the matter was of urgent public interest and wondered why the prosecution had failed to respond to an application filed over two weeks ago.

“Under Section 19 (2)(b and c) of the EFCC Act, the court is enjoined to give accelerated hearing and the Federal High Court Practice Direction 2013 also stresses the need for accelerated hearing of criminal matters brought before the court.”

He urged the court to give a short adjournment given the urgency of the matter and the public interest the respondents attached to it.

Counsel to Agip Babatunde Fapohunda, who also filed the same application, urged the court to set aside its earlier order in the interest of justice.

Tsho adjourned the matter till Feb. 27 to hear the two pending applications.
The court had granted the order following an ex-parte motion filed by the EFCC through its counsel Ojogbane.

The court ordered that the property be managed by the Department of Petroluem Resources on behalf of the Federal Government, pending the conclusion of investigation and prosecution of all those involved.

The EFCC counsel in the motion noted that the investigation bordered on alleged acts of conspiracy, bribery, official corruption and money laundering.

EFCC had in December 2016, charged nine suspects, including the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke, over the issue.

Adoke was accused of illegally transferring more than 800 million dollars purportedly meant for the purchase of the OPL 245 to Etete, Malabu Oil.

Pro-Buhari group urges Nigerians to embrace FG’s whistle-blower policy

http://ift.tt/2jVfQ0R

Abuja – The Buhari Media Support Group has urged Nigerians to embrace Federal Government’s whistle-blower policy, saying recent recovery of looted funds was a proof that the strategy was dependable.

In a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, the group noted that the policy had started aiding the Economic and Financial Commission’s (EFCC) in recovering funds stolen by former government officials.

The statement by group’s Coordinator, Mallam Muhammad Labbo, and Secretary, Chief Cassidy Madueke, particularly attributed recent recovery of 9.8 million dollars from former Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to the policy.

“The policy has given EFCC the teeth for the necessary bite needed in carrying out its functions,’’ the statement said.

Alluding to the recovery of 151 million dollars and N8 billion by the anti-graft commission, in a few weeks, it condemned the spate of looting of public funds in the country.

It stated that if the high incidence of looting the nation’s treasury was not halted, “it will further bring Nigeria to its knees’’.

It said that any doubts that treasure-looting was “the main business of officials who served in former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration’’, had been erased by the most recent recovery of looted funds by the EFCC.

The group said it was convinced that huge sums of looted funds were still in accounts and vaults of many other former officials of the immediate past government.

It, therefore, urged the EFCC to step of its game in the “looted funds recovery project’’.

It said that such funds, when recovered, could rightly fund national budget for the next several years, and urged the EFCC to ensure the prosecution of the culprits.

“We commend the whistle-blower initiative by the Federal Government which we are convinced has opened the vista of opportunities for ordinary Nigerians to put eyes on the management of their resources.

“It has given them a mind-set to report further stealing of their commonwealth by those elected or appointed to serve their interests.

“We also urge all Nigerians to align with the principle of whistle-blowing with a resolve to support the anti-graft agencies in their drive to rid Nigeria of acts of corruption, especially looting of public funds,” it said.

The group expressed optimism that the “nation’s economy will start looking up’’ given the initiatives so far put in place by the government.

It identified the rise in the nation’s external reserve as a positive sign that the economy was on the path of growth again after several years of decline.

CAF Championship: Enugu to demolish illegal structures at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Chinedu Adonu
ENUGU-AHEAD of the on-going CAF Championship to be played between Nigeria’s representative, Enugu Rangers Intenational Football Club and the J.S Saoura of Algeria on Sunday, February 19, 2017, Enugu State Government may demolish illegal structures at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, venue of the match.

Commissioner for Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, Mr. Chidi Aroh who hinted that the illegal structures might be demolished, said that the illegal structures defaced the aesthetics of the Stadium and as such constituted an eyesore.

Aroh who conducted newsmen round the stadium to witness the illegal structures that tended to threaten the stadium to the extent that it could bring a collapse of the edifice, said that his Ministry had informed the owners of structures to desist from further construction and the demolish forthwith the existing structures , lamented that since November last year they marked the structures for removal, the owners have remained adamant, hence the need to have them demolished.

The Commissioner said that when CAF officials came for inspection of facilities at the Stadium last year ahead of the Championship, the state government had signed an undertaking that before the tournament, the illegal structures would have been removed and the Stadium put in the proper shape for the championship.

It could be recalled that NFF had threatened that unless the obsolete facilities at the Stadium were put in place, the CAF championship and even local matches may not be played at the Stadium, hence the Enugu State Government efforts to put the Stadium in order ahead of the continental meet.

The Commissioner who was conducted round the stadium by the Chairman of Enugu FA, Mr. Chidi Ejiofor Okenwa, pointed out that toilets and conveniences at the Stadium have been converted to shops and other business ventures other than the recreational facility for which it was meant for.

Aroh lamented that the worst part of the illegal structures at the Stadium is that people built lock up shops on top of sewage facilities at the Stadium, there forcing those using the Stadium to seek conveniences elsewhere.

“This is one of the most important place I have brought you here today. This is the greatest disaster because there are built on sewage. We had an undertaking with CAF that we’ll put the place in order before the championship,” Aroh said and lamented that the stores and shops were allocated to government officials few days before the present administration came to power and wondered why people sane enough should built in such places.

“The structures were allocated seven days before the present administration took over and they all have allocation letters.

The Commissioner said that the demolition might take place in order to save lives and property at the Stadium because such structures might add load to the Stadium and bring about its collapse.

He noted that though the cost of demolition might be much and cost government a fortune but that saving life far outweighs the money to be expended on the demolition in order to save life.

Aroh pointed out that Rangers was the darling team of not only Enugu people but the entire Igbo race and for this reason, they cannot afford to loose hosting the CAF Championship because of the handiwork of some undesirable element that trespassed where they should not.
