Poor visibility forces Osinbajo to cancel trip to Ondo (Read full details)

Hazy weather and poor visibility yesterday morning forced Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, to reschedule his visit to Ondo State.

A statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, yesterday said the visit has been rescheduled for Monday, February 20.

The trip had been scheduled in continuation of his tour of the oil-producing communities, which has taken him to Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Imo states.

According to Akande, Osinbajo was already air-borne when weather reports indicated dusty haze and very poor visibility at the Akure Airport and other alternative airports nearby.

He said the presidential jet had to return to Abuja, following which the weather condition was closely monitored until about 2:30pm, when it became clear that the situation would not change in time for the Acting President to achieve the purposes of the visit.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has extended apologies to Governor Olusegun Mimiko, the governor-elect, Rotimi Akeredolu, traditional rulers and the generality of the people of Ondo State who had waited to receive the Acting President.

Soldier killed by youths as Agatu people condemn killing

THE lawmaker representing Agatu state constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, Alhaji Sule Audu has on behalf of the people of the area, apologised to the Nigerian army over the recent murder of a soldier by some youths of the area.

He promised that the people would continue to cooperate with the military and advised against any act or unsubstantiated comments that could aggravate the situation in the area. The lawmaker who spoke yesterday in Makurdi, condoled the military over the incident which he

condemned describing it as unwarranted and unacceptable. He also debunked claims that Agatu had been razed by the military, stressing,”they went there in search of the culprits and their arms that were missing which were normal in the military, it is not that they went to raze the villages.

When Dr. Alex Ekwueme last Wednesday said the story of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP makes him weep; some may have misunderstood the emotional turbulence that led to the assertion.

His assertion when he received members of the party’s reconciliation committee in his Enugu residence, came just two days before yesterday’s historic Court of Appeal judgment on the factional crisis that has paralysed the one-time ruling party. Underpinning that crisis is the fact that the once bubbling national secretariat of the party has been sealed off for more than six months. The same party that once bragged that it would rule the country for 60 uninterrupted years was just 16 years after, chased away from power by a septuagenarian. Even in the absence of the septuagenarian and the visible expressions of rudderlessness, the party can hardly evince a proof of its existence as a constructive opposition party.

Indeed, only a few would have

connected with the historic vision that

underlined the formation of the PDP back in 1998. And perhaps, fewer still, would have contextualised the party as a national institution or bulwark against the primitive tendencies of ethnicity and religious bigotry that chip at the foundations of national cohesion.

The PDP was conceived from the political alliance of nine principled men who stood against the tyranny of the Sani Abacha dictatorship. The G 9 as they were called included Bola Ige, Senator Francis Ellah, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Prof. Jerry Gana, Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, Solomon Lar, Adamu Ciroma, Abubakar Rimi and Sule Lamido. Four of the nine men, Ige, Ellah, Lar, and Rimi have now passed on to the great beyond, leaving the remaining five to live with the torture of a missed vision.

Governor Sule Lamido who governed Jigawa State between 2007 and 2015, perhaps as a memory to the vision of the G9, immortalised them by naming nine Government Guest chalets in Dutse after each of

them.

Members of the G9 at that time in the late nineties represented some of the best political minds in the country. Remarkably, the major ethnic and religious shades in the country found habitation of sorts within the G9.

It is significant that after the 1999 elections that the PDP won 21 of the 36 governorship slots in the country. Remarkably, ten of its governors were from the North, and 11 were from the South; underlining its standing as a truly national party. Its national colouration was against the provincial character of its two competitors, the then All Peoples Party, APP and the Alliance for Democracy, AD which drew strength almost entirely from the North and Southwest respectively.

It is this great national institution that has lately been reduced to near irrelevance, not even able to voice its positions on national issues.

Ekwueme blamed President

Olusegun Obasanjo for what happened to the PDP. Though it wasn’t reported, it is unimaginable that the former vice-president would have let it slip that Obasanjo was not even there when the G9 sowed the seed of the party. Not even when others came to join them to make it G18, or even when it reached G34 was Obasanjo present.

Whether Obasanjo as a person was wholly responsible for what happened to the PDP remains an issue for the jury, especially given the effectual role played by other political actors in that period. Many who lost out in the power game turned out to bellyache and curse Obasanjo for being an enemy of democracy including those who within their own conclaves destroyed the basic instincts of internal democracy.

Even the well respected Dr. Ekwueme is sometimes blamed for the anarchy that became the lot of the PDP in his state, Anambra. Those who have not heard his perspective of the role, if any, he played in the emergence of Dr. Chinwoke Mbadiniju as PDP governor say he was responsible for the disaster that the PDP became in Anambra.

Though he has publicly torn his membership card of the PDP, it would be a notorious space in history if Obasanjo refuses to let the world let the role played by the different actors in the sordid and sorry state of the PDP. Then, Ekwueme’s weeping would have been truly in vain.

Wizzy’s opted to keep mute about his mega deal with the American major entertainment label, whilst choosing to work publicly and drop no record. But with the release of ‘Daddy Yo’, which was produced by Dre Skull, there has been some activity going on in his career.

While fans and the world took time to acquaint themselves with the pop singer’s reggaeton influence on the song, they were confronted with a new reality: Hush up the silence, another collaboration between Wizkid and Drake.

The new single, had its unfinished version leaked on the internet. Sony Music in a swift reaction scrubbed the internet of every available file, while also hastening the release of the single.

The song was recently sent to radio stations in the US and UK, and an official date for the release has been planned. The roll-out of the single is really on, and the video has already been planned. In 2016, Wizkid travelled the length of the globe, chasing collaborations and getting hyped across social media by stars. He did get himself some success with his part on Drake’s One Dance, and had a hit with Tinie Tempah to subsist on.

Wizzy is opening the year 2017 with more activity than he had at this time last year. This, RCA executives, Peter Edge and Tom Corson has confirmed. Economic experts yesterday in Lagos insisted that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) must float the naira to deliver the nation from the current economic quagmire, noting that the current policy of the apex bank on forex lack direction and does not boost confidence of investors.

The experts, who gathered at a breakfast meeting organised by the Nigerian-America Chamber of Commerce to discuss on, ‘Getting Nigeria out of recession: How the 2017 budget affects business outlook,’ said the apex bank created distortion in the economy through its multiple foreign exchange rates.

The noted that if the naira be floated, expectations are that the inflation would increase further, the country’s debt profile will rise, investors will be able to project adequately, poverty level will rise further, as the price of petrol and power supply, which is largely dependent on gas will rise.

The experts, including Chief Economist at PWC, Andrew Nevin, Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Stock Exchange, Oscar Onyema, Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Limited, Bismarck Rewane, Chairman, Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Bukar Kyari, National President, Nigerian American Chamber of Commerce, Olabintan Famutimi said key changes were required, particularly on foreign exchange, misappropriation of fund as well as corruption otherwise the hope that the 2017 budget would have desired impact on the economy may remain elusive.

Kyari projected a situation where the naira would fall between the parallel market rate, standing at about N400 naira on the official rate rather than N305.

The experts lamented that the current market structure created so much fear and uncertainty and may continue to cripple the economy if urgent solution is not provided.

They said the lack of sufficient involvement by the private sector in the constitution of the nation’s economic management team was adding to the current economic woes. In addressing the country’s rising poverty level, Famutimi said a serious national population policy is needed to monitor growth of population.

The first persecution witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Nkem Ahidjo, yesterday told a Federal High Court, Lagos that Maj-Gen. Emmanuel Atewe paid N35million into the account of the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners Chapel, out of the N8.5 billion he allegedly diverted.

Atewe, who served as the Commander of the Military Joint Task Force, Operation Pulo Shield, in the Niger Delta before his retirement, is facing 22 counts charge, together with others, before Justice A.O. Faji.

The other defendants in the case are the former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick Akpobolokemi, Kime Engozu and Josephine Otuaga.

The EFCC accused them of conspiring among themselves to divert N8.5billion from Operation Pulo Shield between September 5, 2014 and May 20, 2015, using six companies.

The six companies are Jagan Ltd; Jagan Trading Company Ltd; Jagan Global Services Ltd; Al-Nald Ltd; Paper Warehouse Ltd; Eastpoint Integrated Services Ltd and De-Newlink Integrated Services Ltd.They have been arraigned on three occasions and had on each occasion pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Led in evidence by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, Ahidjo, who introduced himself as a businessman, who deals in stationeries, printing and general contracts, said he carried on his trade under his five companies based in Abuja.

He added he was a registered contractor with the National Assembly, the National Population Commission (NPC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to which he made supplies.

He claimed to have known Atewe from Villa Church in Abuja, where they both worshiped, when the retired general was still a Guards Commander.

Testifying, he said: “Each time I received it (money), I would call a BDC operator, named Jimoh. I knew him before this time. “He would change the money. I would pay him the naira equivalent and take the dollars. Once I changed it, I would wait for instruction either from Atewe or Kime.

“That was what we continued to do until the end of the transaction in 2015.”He said he received a total of N4, 915,163,103 within the period, out of which about N4.1billion were converted to dollars and delivered to Engozu, who in turn issued a receipt for each payment based on Atewe’s instruction.

Ahidjo said of the remaining amount, he was instructed by Atewe to transfer N35million to Winners’ Chapel; N103million to INP Ltd; N170million to First Investment Ltd; N99million to Lord Fem Ltd; N88million to Ocean Gas; and N297million to Cisco Nobot.

Asked by the prosecutor the purpose of the transfer to Living Faith Church, Ahidjo said: “I don’t know what it was for; it was on the instruction of Atewe.

“All these monies, I don’t question what they were meant for. It is not my money, so I can’t question what it was for. Atewe asked me to act on instruction.”

The witness said he cultivated a good relationship with Atewe to the extent that he attended “midnight church” in Atewe’s house in Abuja three times a week.

Ahidjo narrated to the court how Atewe moved to Bayelsa State between July and September 2014, where he served as JTF Commander.
“He invited me to Bayelsa State and I went. He told me that the Federal Government gave JTF a grant for security and building of barracks and if I had any company into which account money could be paid.

“And being somebody I knew very well from Guards Commander to Major General, I provided the companies that I listed earlier,” Ahidjo said.

He said on a second invitation and visit to Atewe in Bayelsa State, Atewe told him that three payments were about to be made into his accounts and as soon as they were made, he should acknowledge the payments and await further instructions.

He said within two to three days of the meeting, he started receiving the payments and accordingly informed Atewe, who asked him to hold on till he (Atewe) returned to Abuja.

The witness said upon Atewe’s return to Abuja, he invited him to his office at Niger Barracks, where he introduced Engozu, who is the 3rd defendant, as the person that would take delivery of the money from Ahidjo.

Ahidjo said in view of the volume of the monies, Engozu advised him to change the money from naira to dollar before delivery, and he according contacted a Bureau de Change operator, named only as Jimoh.Justice Faji adjourned till March 21, 2017 for Ahidjo to continue his evidence.

Malaysian police said Saturday they had arrested a North Korean man over the assassination of Kim Jong-Un’s brother, as relations between Pyongyang and Kuala Lumpur nosedived over a battle for his body.

A 46-year-old was arrested on Friday evening with documents that identified him as North Korean citizen Ri Jong Chol, a police statement said, making him the first person from the North to be detained over the case.

Officers have already arrested a woman with a Vietnamese passport and a Malaysian man, as well as an Indonesian woman who foreign police said could have got involved in the murder thinking it was a reality TV prank.

The body of Kim Jong-Nam has been held in a Kuala Lumpur morgue since he was assassinated in a Cold War-style killing at the capital’s international airport on Monday.

Pyongyang accused Malaysia of conspiring with its enemies and said it would reject any results of a post-mortem examination carried out by local police, after Malaysia ignored demands to return the remains.

“The Malaysian side forced the post-mortem without our permission and witnessing. We will categorically reject the result of the post-mortem conducted unilaterally excluding our attendance,” the North Korean ambassador told reporters gathered outside the morgue shortly before midnight on Friday.

The comments were the first official remarks from the country since the killing, but ambassador Kang Chol stopped short of identifying Jong-Nam or touching on his cause of death.

North Korean state media has remained silent on the murder, which Seoul says was carried out by poison-wielding female agents working for Pyongyang.

The ambassador earlier met with Malaysian police, demanding the release of the body without success, according to an English transcript of the envoy’s comments distributed by an aide.

“They are colluding with the hostile forces towards us who are desperate to harm us of malice,” the transcript said, suggesting South Korea was trying to defame the North in a bid to distract from a corruption scandal at home.

On Saturday Malaysia’s police chief said Pyongyang would have to wait for the investigation to be completed, which would include a family member sending a DNA sample to identify the body.

“While in Malaysia, everyone has to obey and follow our rules and regulations… that includes North Korea,” Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told national news agency Bernama.

– A ‘TV show prank’ –

Detectives in Kuala Lumpur have arrested a 25-year-old Indonesian woman named Siti Aishah and her Malaysian boyfriend, along with a woman carrying a Vietnamese passport that identified her as Doan Thi Huong, 28.

Indonesian Police Chief Tito Karnavian said he had information from Malaysia that Aishah was tricked into thinking she was simply taking part in pranks for a TV show like “Just For Laughs”.

“Probably she was just used — she did not realise it was an assassination attempt,” he was quoted as saying in local media.

Aishah’s family in Jakarta expressed shock over her arrest, with her former father-in-law saying there was “no way such a nice person would do that”.

“I could not believe it because she was a good person,” said Tija Liang Kiong, 56.

The drama erupted on Monday morning as Jong-Nam prepared to board a plane to Macau.

Malaysian police say the 45-year-old was jumped by two women who squirted some kind of liquid in his face.

Jong-Nam told staff he was suffering from a headache and was taken to the airport clinic grimacing in pain, according to Malaysian media citing CCTV footage from the airport.

He was once thought to be the natural successor to his father, but on Kim Jong-Il’s death in 2011 the succession went to Kim Jong-Un, who was born to the former leader’s third wife.

Reports of purges and executions have emerged from the current regime as Kim Jong-Un tries to strengthen his grip on power in the face of international pressure over nuclear and missile programmes.

An unmanned SpaceX spaceship carrying food and equipment to the astronauts living at the International Space Station is poised to blast off from a historic NASA launch pad on Saturday.

The launch of the Dragon cargo ship is scheduled for 10:01 am (1501 GMT) from Cape Canaveral’s launchpad 39A, which was built and used for the US space agency’s pioneering missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s.

It was also the blastoff point for sending American space shuttles into orbit, until the shuttle program came to an end in 2011.

SpaceX, headed by billionaire internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, managed to negotiate a lease with NASA for the launchpad in 2013, beating out its competitor Blue Origin, which is headed by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos.

By the time the launch pad is completely outfitted for sending astronauts to space in 2018, the company will have spent over $100 million to outfit it for modern day spaceflights, said SpaceX chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell.

“I wouldn’t say we saved a bunch of money here,” she told reporters, but added that the launchpad’s singular place in American space lore made the price tag worthwhile.

“My heart is pounding to come out here today,” she told an outdoor press conference near the launchpad, recalling how she watched the Apollo 11 mission’s July 1969 lunar landing on television with her father as a child.

“I can tell you it is an extra special launch tomorrow, for sure. Maybe extra nerve-wracking,” she added.

– Helium leak –

SpaceX has endured two costly disasters in the past two years — a launchpad blast that destroyed a rocket and its satellite payload in September, and a June 2015 explosion after liftoff that obliterated a Dragon cargo ship packed with goods bound for the space station.

The Hawthorne, California-based company has already made one successful return to flight in January of this year, from Vandenberg Air Force base in California.

Saturday’s planned launch was left somewhat in question, after SpaceX discovered a “very small” leak in the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket on Friday, Musk tweeted.

“I believe we found it,” Shotwell said, adding the problem involved a helium leak and that engineers were still working to figure out the root cause.

“As far as I know right now, we are going to proceed with the count.”

If Saturday’s launch — meant to carry 5,000 pounds (2,267 kilograms) of gear into orbit — is delayed, another opportunity opens up Sunday morning.

The weather forecast for Saturday’s attempt was 70 percent favorable, officials said Friday.

– Landing attempt –

Following the launch, SpaceX plans to try landing the booster on solid ground at a different part of Cape Canaveral.

If successful, the upright touchdown of the Falcon 9’s first stage would mark the third time SpaceX has managed to stick a landing on solid ground.

Other such landings have taken place on floating ocean platforms, as the company perfects its techniques of powering costly rocket parts back to land instead of jettisoning them in the ocean after a single use.

The Dragon will spend two days in orbit before arriving at the space station early Monday.

The cargo resupply mission, known as CRS-10, is the 10th of up to 20 planned trips to the space station as part of a contract between SpaceX and NASA.
