Malaysia expels North Korea ambassador over Kim murder…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2mFqOt2

Malaysia has expelled North Korea’s ambassador, giving him 48 hours to leave the country in a major break in diplomatic relations over the airport assassination of the half-brother of Pyongyang’s leader.

Kim Jong-Nam, 45, was poisoned February 13 with deadly nerve agent VX. North Korea has not acknowledged the dead man’s identity but has repeatedly disparaged the murder investigation, accusing Malaysia of conniving with its enemies.

“The ambassador has been declared persona non grata” after Malaysia demanded but did not receive an apology for Pyongyang’s attacks on the investigation, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Anifah Haji Aman said.

“Malaysia will react strongly against any insults made against it or any attempt to tarnish its reputation,” he said in a statement released late Saturday.

Ambassador Kang Chol failed to present himself at the ministry when summoned and “is expected to leave Malaysia within 48 hours,” the statement added.

On Sunday morning, media besieged Pyongyang’s embassy, from where Kang is expected to depart before the expulsion deadline expires 6pm on Monday.

Arch-rival South Korea has blamed the North for the murder, citing what they say was a standing order from leader Kim Jong-Un to kill his exiled half-brother who may have been seen as a potential rival.

The expulsion is “part of the process by the Malaysian government to review its relations” with the North Korea, which before Kim’s assassination were unusually cosy, the foreign ministry said.

— ‘Diplomatically rude’ —

The diplomatic spat erupted last month when Malaysian police rejected North Korean diplomats’ demands to hand over Kim’s body.

Kang then claimed the investigation was politically motivated and said Kuala Lumpur was conspiring with “hostile forces”.

Malaysia summoned Kang for a dressing-down, with Prime Minister Najib Razak saying the ambassador’s statement was “diplomatically rude”.

Malaysia issued a February 28 deadline for an apology, but “no such apology has been made, neither has there been any indication that one is forthcoming.”

Malaysia has also recalled its envoy to Pyongyang and cancelled a rare visa-free travel deal with North Korea.

Police are seeking seven North Korean suspects in their probe but on Friday released the only North Korean arrested for lack of evidence.

After Ri Jong-Chol was deported, he claimed police offered him a comfortable life in Malaysia for a false confession, saying the investigation was “a conspiracy to impair the dignity of the Republic (North Korea)”.

Two women — one Vietnamese and one Indonesian — have been charged with murdering Kim Jong-Nam, with airport CCTV footage showing them approaching the heavyset 45-year-old and apparently smearing his face with a cloth.

Police say he suffered a seizure and died less than 20 minutes later. Swabs of the dead man’s face revealed traces of VX nerve agent.

— End of cosy ties —

North Korea had few friends even before the assassination, but the fallout from the killing looks set to further isolate the nuclear-armed state.

Malaysia formally established diplomatic relations with North Korea in 1973 and opened an embassy in Pyongyang in 2003.

It has provided a conduit between Pyongyang and the wider world in recent years, with Kuala Lumpur serving as a discreet meeting place for talks between the regime and the United States.

A recently released report by a UN Panel of Experts reviewing compliance with sanctions against Pyongyang, identified a front company run by North Korean intelligence out of Malaysia, selling military communications equipment to Eritrea, with suppliers in China and an office in Singapore.

Up to 1,000 North Koreans currently work in Malaysia and their remittances are a valuable source of foreign currency for the isolated regime.

North Korea imports refined oil, natural rubber and palm oil from Malaysia, which buys electrical and electronic items, chemicals as well as iron and steel products from North Korea.

Last week Malaysia’s trade minister Mustapa Mohamed said that the spat had no impact on Kuala Lumpur as the trade with the reclusive country is “too small” and “insignificant”.

3m Nigerians lose N18bn to MMM

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, has said about three million Nigerians lost N18 billion in the Ponzi scheme, popularly called Mavrodi Mundial Movement, MMM.

The Managing Director of the Corporation, Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, stated this while speaking at the ongoing 38th Kaduna International Trade Fair, yesterday.

Represented by the NDIC Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Alhaji Hadi Suleiman, Ibrahim lamented that despite repeated warnings by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Corporation, Nigerians still patronised MMM.

He said:”The Ponzi scheme is the phenomenon of illegal fund managers, popularly called Wonder Banks, which have continued to defraud unsuspecting members of the public of their hard-earned money. This phenomenon has been a source of concern because despite our repeated warnings over the years, some members of the public have continued to fall victims of their fraudulent practices.

“We would like to reiterate the fact that these fund managers are illegal as they are neither licenced by the CBN to take deposits from members of the public nor are those who patronise them covered by the NDIC deposit insurance scheme.

“I want to also say that some cooperative societies, which often go beyond their primary mandate by accepting contributions from members as cooperative societies, are only recognised to mobilise savings from their members.”

While advising the public on the dangers of keeping large sums of money at home or in market shops, he said there are 978 licensed microfinance banks nationwide, out if which seven are spread across Kaduna State.

Reps probe debt owed local contractors by FG, seek penalties for crime against humanity

http://ift.tt/2lp8vFl

House of Representatives

The House of Representatives yesterday, mandated its committee on Aids, Loans and Debt Management to liaise with the budget office to ascertain the debt owed to local contractors by the federal government.

The resolution followed a motion moved on the floor of the House by Hon. Emmanuel Oker-Jev on the ‘urgent need to carry out verification of local debts owed by the federal government before payment.’

Leading the debate, Oker-Jev stated that there were uncertainties surrounding the amount of local debts owed local contractors by the government.

He pushed for investigations into the debts, stressing that if carried out before payments are made, trillions of naira would be saved for the national treasury.

The lawmaker noted that these funds could be used for infrastructural developments.

He said:, “While some put the figure at about N2.2 trillion, others put it at over N10.61 trillion,” the lawmaker said.

“With the clamour for the reflation of the economy, the federal government would soon start settling those local debts when the budget is passed.

“Considering the shenanigans of Nigeria’s bureaucracy, the estimated amount allegedly being owed to local contractors may not be real as the actual debt may have been over estimated and it will amount to a major disservice to the nation for trillions of Naira to be paid without verification.”

Contributing, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, said payment of local contractors would lead to increased employment for the youths in the country.

Similarly, Hon. Olufunke Adedoyin, noted that the payment was “critical to the survival of our economy and the reduction of local debts.”

The House also passed for second reading a bill seeking to enforce the punishment of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.

Sponsor of the bill, Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai in his debate, explained that the bill when passed into law, will provide appropriate sanctions those guilty of such crimes.

Ossai noted that the bill would help bring to justice, those who choose to take laws into their own hands.

“Nigeria signed the international criminal court of justice treaty in 2000, the national assembly has the powers to domesticate such treaties,” the legislator told the house.

“One of the benefits of this bill is that it will provide appropriate sanctions to perpetrators of such acts and if someone commits a crime and runs away he will still be brought to book internationally.”

Supporting the bill, Nkem Uzoma-Abonta and Nnenna Ukeje said the country was currently undergoing some of these crimes the bill was seeking to address adding that it would strengthen the country’s laws against such crimes.

Similarly, Hon. Mohammed Garba Datti said “domestication of the bill will provide protection of citizens and uphold the rule of law.”

Obasanjo seeks revival of story telling culture, donates books to Ibogun pupils (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2m6dxZp

Olusegun Obasanjo

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday advised parents and community leaders to revive the culture of story telling among children to enable them imbibe good moral standards.

Obasanjo gave the advice yesterday at a programme tagged “Story time with baba,” at his ancestral home at Ibogun in Ifo council area of Ogun State as part of activities marking his 80th birthday anniversary which comes up on Sunday

The former president sat among the pupils of Baptist Day School, Ibogun where he had his primary school education and told them folk stories. He recalled that while growing up in the community, his parents and other community leaders usually gathered young children, including him, under the moonlight to give riddles and tell them fables.

The elder statesman, however, expressed concern that such practice had been jettisoned by parents and thereby denied the children a good platform to build character.

He said that he had written 12 books containing several of such stories to sustain the culture. He distributed copies of the books to pupils of the school and other schools in the state.

Obasanjo who was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Bola Obasanjo and some close associates enjoin the children to improve on their reading habits, saying “Only regular reading, hardwork and commitment to your studies can get you to greater heights.”

The Chairman of the Celebration Planning Committee and Director of the Centre for Human Security of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Prof. Peter Okebukola had earlier in his address, described Obasanjo as a great writer and author with several books to his credit.

PDP’s present state makes me weep, says Ekwueme

http://ift.tt/2lSGTHI

Alex Ekwueme. PHOTO: AFP

Former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, says the present state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) draws him close to tears.

Ekwueme, who spoke yesterday in Enugu when members of the Strategy Review and Inter Party Affairs Committee of the party visited to present their report to him, noted that the vision of the party’s founding fathers was to have a mass movement, not just a political grouping tailored after the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa.

He, however, regretted that greed, imposition, indiscipline, lack of internal democracy and other vices had robbed the party of its fortunes.

Stating that the mass movement was one that could control political power for over 50 years, the elder statesman added that the party lost the vision when some politicians, who were not around during its formation, moved in and “converted it into a personal estate.”

His words: “The story of PDP is one that sometimes makes me try to weep each time I remember the party because the founding fathers said that we are going to be in charge for 50 years or more. The idea of the PDP is not just an ordinary party but a mass movement for all Nigerians, just the like the ANC.”

Ekwueme said the ugly erosion of values first manifested in his home state of Anambra, where the re-registration exercise excluded members. The poor handling of the grievances, he added, paved the way for mass defection and anger among stalwarts.

The former vice president stated that it was only former President Musa Yar’Adua that initiated a genuine move to reconcile aggrieved members by touring the six geo-political zones, regretting however, that death could not allow him implement fully his programme of restoration.

Leader of the delegation, Alhaji Aminu Wali, pointed out that that the impunities made the party to lose the 2015 general elections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also member of the team, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said the PDP was meant for everybody, apologising to Nigerians on the areas the party may have failed to meet their expectations.

He declared that the grouping was now “a born again party” poised to win the 2019 general elections, adding that the PDP was not factionalised but united under the Senator Ahmed Makarafi-led caretaker committee.

IDPs

IDPs

The Executive Director of United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Ms. Ertharin Cousin, has said that one million returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Northeast are to be assisted with improved seeds and agricultural inputs in the process of rebuilding destroyed communities during this year’s cropping season.

The beneficiaries are drawn from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.Cousin disclosed this yesterday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, when a delegation of the WFP paid an official visit to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam at the Government House.

She said this year’s Agricultural Input Support (AGRIS) was to improve productivity of farmers to fight hunger and poverty in the zone.“Out of the three most affected states, Yobe alone has 350,000 people that will benefit from the WFP arrangement to reduce the levels of poverty and unemployment in the state.

“This agricultural programme was aimed at checking hunger and poverty among the people who suffered insurgency for over five years.”

She appreciated the role played by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for actualising the assistance for the less privileged in society and assured that the WFP would work hard towards returning peace, growth and even development of the affected region.

Gaidam, who was represented by his Deputy, Abubakar Aliyu, said over 600, 000 IDPs and other less privilege have benefited from WFP cash transfer and food assistance.

He also thanked WFP for establishing a centre for capacity development on humanitarian studies at the state university, adding that it would enhance the capacity of operators of humanitarian activities in the insurgency affected states.

Fifteen years after the Ikeja Military Cantonment bomb blasts in Lagos, some victims’ families yesterday tasked the federal and Lagos State governments on the delay in the payment of the compensation promised them.

Speaking at the site of the mass burial in Oke-Afa, Isolo Council, where prayers were offered for the souls of the departed, Chairman of the victims’ families, Nurudeen Oyegbemi, said the Lagos State government paid compensation to 70 families of victims, but excluded 84 others.

He recounted: “When the incident happened, we were told that those that lost their loved ones should register their names with the state government. “The following year, the federal government invited us to the National Assembly and gave N500, 000 to those that lost their beloved ones, while N250, 000 was given to the victims’ families that got missing.

“They made us to understand that the monies given were just relief packages, adding that they would soon compensate us adequately.“After 10 years, the Lagos State government, out of the 154 victims’ families, gave only 70 families N250, 000, while the remaining 84 were left behind and since then, they have not done anything about it,” Oyegbemi bemoaned. The Jan. 27, 2002 bomb blasts led to the deaths of over 1000 persons and left many others injured, following a stampede as a result of the blasts.

So I’m going to tell you a little story about a friend of mine called Pomi. She is actually the only crazy friend I have, the Ying to my Yang, my other mischievous half. Lol.

So she met this guy recently…actually they’ve known each other for a bit over two or three years. But didn’t get very close until recently. Clearly there was some clear flirt vibes going on because he always invited her to his apartment, they went out a few times together, checked on each other a lot, spent nights in each others apartment…oh did I mention they stayed in the same compound? Yes they did. So one day, he drops this bomb: “I’m really not interested in a relationship right now.” WTH?

Now you know for a fact there was sexy energy between the two of them no doubt. But what really happened? I still ask myself that question every time I think about how fast the relationship came crashing down in just a month.

What happened? What exactly was the plan here because left to me, he was just playing games with Pomi. So I really thought about it long and hard and I came to these conclusions you are about to read below and only one of those is the truth.

When a man tells you he’s not interested in a relationship, it might really be true, but it might not. He might be playing one of 5 “cards” here…

* The Pity Card
He’s telling you he’s not interested, just broke up, etc., because he hopes to get some tasty-sweet woman-sympathy. It’s an attention thing. Trust me.
Playing this card might even get him some “poor brokenhearted baby” sex. Which could develop into regular bootie calls.
WARNING. You probably already know that women tend to hope that bootie calls will turn into a deeper relationship. Men don’t. So just let him be. Leave him alone.

*The “Screening for Bootie Calls” Card
This one is a version of the truth. He’s not interested in a “relationship,” but he is interested in sex. Just go back to the above warning.

* The “I’m in Control” Card
He tells you this in case he might want to date you. You’ve backed off, so now he gets to call all the shots if he decides he wants to.

* The “Easy Exit” Card
Once he’s told you he’s not interested, he can freely make a play for you, and you’re all off-balance. He’s definitely now in control. So if you date for a while or even sleep together, and then he decides he’s ready to move on, he has a ready-made exit excuse. He can quickly and easily put all the responsibility for “misunderstanding” on you. For example, “Hey,” he can casually say, “I told you I wasn’t interested in a relationship.”

*The Truth
Yes, some guys say it because it’s true and some guys say it because it’s true, then change their minds and decide to date. So how do you respond to his “I’m not interested” speech? Simple, take him at his word. Assume he’s telling the gospel truth, and leave him alone. This means you move forward with your life, immediately. Date other men and don’t put your universe on hold in hopes that something might develop with this guy. Don’t behave like his girlfriend or his bootie call. Be clear that if he’s interested in dating you, then your outings have to be actual dates, not “let’s watch a movie at my place then have sex” or “I need to fill some social gaps” or “you’re the only one available, so why not.”
You’re worth so much more than that. Okay?
To your happiness. Cheers.

Filming begins on first Marvel superhero flick with black lead actor

Marvel Studios announced on Thursday that filming had begun on its latest superhero epic which for the first time will feature a black actor, Chadwick Boseman, in the titular role.

The news comes just after a record number of black actors were nominated for this year’s Oscars and as Hollywood pushes for more diversity.

Boseman will play the lead role in the hotly anticipated “Black Panther” alongside a star-studded cast including Michael B. Jordan, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker.

The film follows the events after 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” in which Boseman appeared as Marvel’s first African superhero, but not in the lead role.

The movie was the year’s biggest box office hit, amassing $1.15 billion worldwide.

In “Black Panther,” T’Challa (Boseman) returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as its king, Marvel said in a statement.

“However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk,” it added.

“Black Panther,” which is being filmed in Atlanta and South Korea, is scheduled for release in February of next year.
