Bye-bye Obama, president’s face gone from popular mural (Read full details)

Barack Obama left the presidency just days ago, but already his smiling face is gone from a mural on the wall of an iconic eatery in the US capital.

An outer wall of Ben’s Chili Bowl — famous for its chili half-smoke sausages — on very hip U Street is now just a vast white space.

Also painted over is the face of Bill Cosby, the groundbreaking comedy legend now reviled as a suspected serial sexual predator.

Passersby who were used to seeing those two faces on the colorful mural are doing a double-take. In its place are written the words “new year, new mural” and the address of the restaurant’s website.

“I’m shocked that they actually took it down,” said Shadarryl Brown, a 43-year-old African American.

To boot, also gone are the faces of funk guitarist and band leader Chuck Brown and a local radio DJ named Donnie Simpson.

There is nothing political about the removal, the restaurant insists. It is letting people vote on which faces go up now.

Nor is the eatery trying to dissociate itself from Cosby, who will go on trial in June, said owner Virginia Ali.

– Vote for next mural –

As for Obama, his departure from the White House last Friday is just a coincidence, she insisted.

“We removed the mural because it’s been there five years. It needs to be done again. And we decided that for the new year, we should do a new mural. For the next five years,” said Ali.

“I had no idea my little wall was so important,” Ali said with a smile.

The decision to give the wall a makeover was made last spring.

The new one will go up around April, and the idea is to let people vote on who they want to see — even Obama again, maybe, this time with wife Michelle.

Brown said it was good that people can express their preference.

His first choice is Michael Jackson — “when he was black” — and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., whose assassination in 1968 triggered riots along U Street and elsewhere in America.

People can choose from some 60 candidates, most of them black. Washington is a mainly black city, and the U Street area also used to be mainly African-American until it underwent gentrification.

Starting Thursday, people can now weigh in on the future mural and suggest up to six candidates.

The restaurant is even suggesting some combinations of famous faces. One brings together King, Mahatma Gandhi, Obama, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Desmond Tutu.

Voting will be open until late February but already thousands of people have cast their ballot, said Kamal Ali, son of the owner.

“So far Michelle and Barack Obama are leading,” he said. “They are leading overwhelmingly.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May will meet Donald Trump on Friday, the US president’s first official meeting with a foreign leader that is set to be dominated by talk of trade and security.

After igniting a row this week with Mexico over his plans to build a border wall, Trump will likely have an easier ride with May as she seeks to reaffirm Britain’s “special relationship” with the United States with an eye on her country’s future outside the European Union.

May arrived in the United States on Thursday and received a rapturous welcome from Republican lawmakers gathering in Philadelphia with a speech urging them to “beware” of Russia, and warning US allies to “step up” and play a greater role in global security.

She met with Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan and discussed issues that included early efforts to forge a trade deal for when Britain leaves the European Union.

May is hoping the prospect of a US deal — while complicated — will help dispel fears among a divided public that Britain may be economically worse off by leaving Europe’s single market.

But her decision to meet Trump just one week after his inauguration has caused controversy at home, where he has been condemned by politicians of all guises for his comments about women, Muslims and the use of torture.

May, the reserved daughter of a vicar, has promised to be “frank” in her dealings with the unpredictable billionaire, and laughed off questions about their personal compatability.

“Haven’t you ever noticed that sometimes opposites attract?” she told reporters on her plane.

The pair will meet at the White House and hold a joint press conference before taking part in a working lunch.

It will be the first such event for the president since taking office.

– Defined the modern world’ –

May will begin her day Friday with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place of a number of British soldiers who died fighting alongside US forces in various wars.

The prime minister’s speech to Republican lawmakers on Thursday hailed strong security ties between the two countries, and said their relationship had “defined the modern world.”

Acknowledging rising tensions between the US and China, she said fears of the “eclipse of the West” would not be fulfilled if Britain and the United States continued to stand together.

May said NATO member states should contribute their fair share — a complaint made by the former and current US administrations — but defended the alliance from Trump’s claims it was “obsolete.”

May also defended the Iranian nuclear deal against the president’s criticism, saying it was “vitally important” for regional security — but must now be properly enforced.

The prime minister had tough words on Trump’s assertion that torture “absolutely” works, telling reporters that she condemned the use of illegal interrogation.

However, she won loud applause from Republicans when she praised Trump’s victory, which he has compared to the anti-establishment feeling that drove the Brexit vote last June.

Private varsities demand tariff exemption from FG

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

By Grace Udofia
ABUJA— The Association of Pro-Chancellors of Private Universities of Nigeria, APPUN, has called on the Federal Government to speedily put in place a policy for tariff exemptions for private universities.

This was contained in a communiqué at the end of the 5th meeting of the association in Abuja.

Chairman of APPUN, Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher, who read the communiqué, explained that the policy should cover exemptions of tax, duties and tariff on educational books, laboratory and teaching equipment.

Hagher stressed the need to provide an intervention fund for private universities at a single digit rate to help in the development of infrastructure and programmes as government has provided for agriculture, textiles and Nollywood.

The communiqué directed “private universities to participate in corporate a social responsibility, that is closing the gap between the town and gown in their various communities.”

Marvel Studios announced on Thursday that filming had begun on its latest superhero epic which for the first time will feature a black actor, Chadwick Boseman, in the titular role.

The news comes just after a record number of black actors were nominated for this year’s Oscars and as Hollywood pushes for more diversity.

Boseman will play the lead role in the hotly anticipated “Black Panther” alongside a star-studded cast including Michael B. Jordan, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker.

The film follows the events after 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” in which Boseman appeared as Marvel’s first African superhero, but not in the lead role.

The movie was the year’s biggest box office hit, amassing $1.15 billion worldwide.

In “Black Panther,” T’Challa (Boseman) returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as its king, Marvel said in a statement.

“However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk,” it added.

“Black Panther,” which is being filmed in Atlanta and South Korea, is scheduled for release in February of next year.

Hollywood actor turned activist Shia LaBeouf was arrested and charged Thursday after scuffling with a man during a live-stream protest against Donald Trump in New York, police said.

The 30-year-old star of 2014 movie “Fury” launched the protest on the day of Republican president’s inauguration last Friday. It is being live streamed 24 hours a day, seven days a week outside a New York museum.

Come rain, shine or near freezing temperatures, the project invites members of the public to repeat “He Will Not Divide Us” into a camera mounted onto a wall outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens.

LaBeouf, who set up the project with artists Nastja Sade Ronkko and Luke Turner, has appeared repeatedly before the camera, rallying the troops outside.

But at around midnight, he was accused of grabbing a 25-year-old man’s scarf, scratching his face and pushing the man to the ground, police confirmed.

Police, who happened to be in the area at the time, arrested the actor shortly before 1:00 am (0600 GMT), charging him with assault and harassment.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the alleged assault.

He has been released. LaBeouf has had repeated run-ins with the law and in 2014 appeared in court charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct after disrupting a performance of Broadway musical “Cabaret.”

Since Friday, a steady stream of mostly young people and mostly those living in the area, have taken part in the protest to vent their frustration with Trump.

“The mantra ‘HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US’ acts as a show of resistance or insistence, opposition or optimism, guided by the spirit of each individual participant and the community,” says the protest’s website.

LaBeouf has said the protest will last the entirety of Trump’s four-year term in office. Or until he steps down, which ever comes soonest.

Elton John to turn ‘Devil Wears Prada’ into musical (Read full details)

John will write the music for "The Devil Wears Prada," with lyrics to be penned by Paul Rudnick, a humorist who frequently writes for The New Yorker magazine.

Pop superstar Elton John unveiled Thursday his return to Broadway with a musical adaptation of the blockbuster film and novel “The Devil Wears Prada.”

John will write the music for “The Devil Wears Prada,” with lyrics to be penned by Paul Rudnick, a humorist who frequently writes for The New Yorker magazine.

“Reimagining ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ for the musical theatre is super exciting,” John said in a statement, which added that the production timeline will be announced later.

“I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture,” the English musician said.

While Broadway is notoriously tough terrain even for famous names, John has a proven record of triumph with musicals.

“The Lion King,” his musical adaptation of the Disney animated film, set the record as the first show to gross $1 billion on Broadway where it remains the third longest-running show in history.

He also found success with a musical adaptation of Verdi’s opera “Aida” as well as “Billy Elliot the Musical,” which closed last year after a successful run on London’s West End.

Meryl Street and Anne Hathaway starred in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada” about an all-powerful fashion magazine editor who tyrannically imposes her will on an ambitious young editorial assistant.

A major international box-office success, “The Devil Wears Prada” was based on the popular novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger. The author formerly worked for longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, although she has never confirmed that Wintour was the inspiration.

Court orders forfeiture of Malabu Oil to Federal government (Read full details)

Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, yesterday ordered an interim forfeiture of Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL 245) otherwise known as Malabu oil, to the Federal Government.

The order will last pending the conclusion of investigation and prosecution of Shell Nigeria Ultra Deep Limited, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited, Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited, Malabu Oil & Gas Limited and other individuals named in connection with the act of conspiracy, bribery, official corruption and money laundering.

Justice Tsoho also ordered the Department of Petroleum Resources to manage the oil processing licence of OPL 245 on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had approached the court yesterday following controversies and allegations of fraud associated with the licencing of the oil Bloc.

In a 21-paragraph affidavit sworn to by one Ibrahim Ahmed, accompanied with an ex parte originating summons, the EFCC stated that the properties attached were proceeds of crime that should be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The anti graft agency added that it had taken the steps in public interest in view of the crimes and fraud against the economic interest of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

It stated that sometime in April 1998, Malabu Oil & Gas Limited was incorporated in Nigeria with shareholders namely: Mohammed Sani, fronting for the late General Sani Abacha, Kwekwu Amafegha representing the then Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dan Etete and Hassan Hindu on behalf of Ambassador Hassan Adamu.

It also stated that in the same month, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources offered the company deep water oil bloc processing licence in respect of OPL 245.

That in June 1998, General Abacha died and between 1999 and 2000, the cooperate status and share holding structures were uttered several times through forged board resolutions which eventually divested Mohammed Sani of their shares while new shareholders and directors were appointed fraudulently.

Though the EFCC had earlier filed charges against some of the suspects, including the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, the order obtained by the EFCC yesterday appeared to clear the stage for the prosecution of more suspects.

Buhari’s death rumour and the rise of fake news (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2jKotvK

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari

For the second time in a week, the Presidency has been forced to deny the rumoured death of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently in London on a short break. In the first instance, he was said to have died from an “unknown disease” and later, he was said to have been advised to resign by his doctors after he attempted to commit suicide.

On the first look at the news website that ‘broke’ the news, the word fake comes to mind. On the one hand, the metro-uk.com that published the news that Buhari died was only registered on October 15, 2016 and will expire a year after. On the on the hand, the clone Huffington Post website that claimed that Buhari attempted to kill himself was created on November 19, 2016 and like the former website, was registered for just one year.

Each of these websites was registered via proxy and hosted on Go Daddy. Conversely, the actual Metro UK website was created on August 1, 1996 and Huffington Post on March 10, 2005, with the names of the owners attached to them.

Invariably, both metro-uk.com and huffingtonpost-fm.com were set up less than a month from each other, ostensibly in a bid to publish unsubstantiated and fake reports. Was the main objective to set Nigeria alight?

The use of fake news to fight political foes is not new. But it got to a head during the last American presidential election. Teenage Macedonians set up basic websites and filled them with outright misleading or totally false reports to sway readers’ perception of the two leading candidates. According to an Associated Press report, most of the websites, as it is in the case of the sites publishing Buhari death rumours, were set up within 12 months before the November 8, 2016 American presidential election.

“These sites tend to follow one of two patterns: some masquerade as well-known outlets like The New York Times or Fox News, while others operate under made-in-America-sounding names like USA Daily News 24,” AP said. The first pattern was deemed the right choice by both metro-uk.com and huffington-fm.com, aping well known metro.uk.com and huffingtonpost.com.

While the young Macedonians claimed they set up fake news websites primarily to make money through Google AdSense, can those behind the publication of Buhari’s death rumours claim to have the same motive? Possibly! With more than 90 million internet users monthly, it is possible for creators of fake news websites to rake in thousands of dollars through AdSense if millions of Nigerians throng their sites to read, of course, fake news.

But Nigeria is not exactly a place where the hunger for money and lust for power can easily exist in mutual independence. Are we seeing the beginning of a trend that could become more prominent as we move closer to 2019 when another general election would be held?

While researchers Hunt Allcott of New York University and Matthew Gentzkow of Stanford, in a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research, concluded that the consumption of fake news by Americans had little impact on Donald Trump’s triumph over Hillary Clinton, they both noted that about eight per cent of the people interviewed for their research said they believed the fake news read.

Here’s the troubling part for Nigeria: with religious biases, ethnic bigotry and political intolerance mounting by the day, are we, as a people, ready to question the veracity of what we read or hear? Are we patient enough to seek the truth without falling victims to the creeping intensity of deep-seated distrust for people of other religion or ethnicity?

I suspect that, in a country where religious and ethnic crises had been ignited over the flimsiest of excuses, fake news can wreak more disasters than imagined! And where such thrives, there will never be a winner!

Bakare is the online editor with The Guardian.

ASUU rejects N500m contribution by Osun, Oyo over LAUTECH crisis (Read full details)

LAUTECH

LAUTECH

Hope of resumption for aggrieved students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has dimmed as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution rejected the N500 million intervention fund provided by the owner state governments of Oyo and Osun.

ASUU described the fund as a ploy to lure its members back to the classroom without addressing the real problems confronting the institution.

The academic and non-academic staff unions of the institution had embarked on indefinite strike action for over eight months over non-payment of salaries.

Oyo and Osun state governments last week contributed N250 million each for the institution to pay two months salary arrears as a short-term solution while the concerned parties pursue the other medium and long-term solutions discussed at their stakeholders meetings.

But ASUU rising from its congress vowed to continue the industrial action, stressing that the fundamental problems of funding and sustainability have not been addressed.

Part of the resolution signed by its Chairman, Dr Biodun Olaniran, and Secretary, Dr Toyin Abegunrin, reads: “The offer of two months is, at best, an ad-hoc arrangement to lure us back to work without addressing the fundamental problem of funding and sustainability. It is our considered opinion that this token offered at this point does not justify the length of time that the crisis has been allowed to linger by the government.”
