Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday called on Nigerians to pray fervently for the country, so that despite its multifarious challenges, it would not “sink like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sunk.”

Obasanjo, who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, stated that it was unbelievable that the PDP, which at one point in time controlled 30 out of the 36 states, is now a shadow of itself and prayed that Nigeria would never get to that level.

He spoke at a ceremony, where 40 different African traditional drums were displayed in his honour as part of activities to mark his 80th birthday.
The colourful event, which was organised by the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC), a department of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL).

The occasion had earlier witnessed an international symposium on “Purpose and Utilitarian Values of Presidential Libraries.”Obasanjo, who left the PDP about two years ago after publicly destroying his membership card, told the crowd at the event that it was strange that a party that once controlled 30 out of the 36 states in the country “is now a shadow of itself” due to reconcilable differences.

The former President, who was responding to a remark by the ex-PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Ali, said he was glad that as national chairman, Ali ensured stability and effectiveness in the party.

According to him: “When all was going well, when I brought Ahmadu Ali as the national chairman of the party, we controlled 30 out of the 36 states, but when Ahmadu and I left, the fortune of the PDP sunk.”

He described Ali as a man of truth, hardworking and courageous.“My prayer is, may the fortune of Nigeria never sink like that of the PDP,” he restated.

Speaking earlier at an international symposium organised as part of activities to mark his birthday, the United Nations Ambassador, Mr. Andrew Young, described Obasanjo as a man of peace, saying: “I don’t think there is any man that has made much contribution to Africa than Obasanjo.”

He noted that the Obasanjo Presidential Library would make people to understand his (Obasanjo’s) work as a President and also his leadership qualities.

Young said: “It is time for Nigeria to realise and make amendments where it is lagging behind. “There is no human being in Africa that has experienced what Obasanjo has gone through in the last 50 years.”

Daughter of former American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Tracy, in her remark, maintained that the Presidential Library is a place meant to bring together the memories of the past Presidents of a country and their works.

She said the library is a gift Obasanjo left to share the memories of his past with his people.“There are 14 Presidential Libraries in the United States, but the first Presidential Library in Africa was created by Obasanjo in Abeokuta.”

Former Permanent Delegate of Kenya to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Ambassador Mary Khimulu, who spoke on ‘Presidential Libraries: A Catalyst for Youth Development,’ said the library was not for Nigeria alone, but all Africa, saying: “This is a landmark that should be emulated by all Africans.”

She said the library would help the youth to know the way of the former President and learn from them. It would also help in the development of Nigeria’s democracy.All those who spoke at the occasion commended Obasanjo’s leadership qualities and love for Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Leading Nigerian entertainers, including King of comedy Alibaba, Lolo, Lepacious Bose and MC Abbey, were among celebrities that attended the just concluded Aunt Landa Market Square Overflow, which recently held at the Bibby Crest Event Centre, Ajah, Lagos.

Organised by love doctor, Yolanda George, fondly called Aunt Landa, and hosted by Remscomedian, the market square was aimed at putting smiles on the faces of over 1,500 Nigerians by empowering them and providing their basic needs.

The event was divided into segments; skill acquisition training, which had attendees learn any craft of their choice and the market square, which gave room for buying and selling with the Aunt Landa currency of love.

During the skill acquisition segment, the attendees were taught how to make bags, leather shoes, catering, make-up, laptop repair, decoration and others. The fair chairman, Alibaba, then instructed that those in need of a sewing or pepper-grinding machine should write and drop their names in the raffle boxes made available. The raffle was drawn and 10 people were gifted brand new sewing machines, while another 10 were gifted brand new pepper grinding machines, courtesy of Aunt Landa Bethel Foundation.

Speaking on event and the inclusion of the skill acquisition classes, Aunt Landa remarked, “There is a need for us all to empower ourselves with a skill in order to stay afloat during this recession, hence the training classes. I’m most excited about the frowns that came in and the smiles that left. It was bigger than I had pictured it,” she said.

It was reported that RGV has started working on the second instalment of his super hit, tentatively titled Rangeela 2 and will be roping in fresh faces. However, at the trailer launch of his next film, Sarkar 3, the director denied the reports and said that he is not making the sequel to Rangeela.

Oh well, I am sure RGV has lefts a lot of fans disappointed!

When Alexandra Kutas headlined a recent fashion show in Kiev it was not just a personal dream come true but also a victory for disabled people in her homeland Ukraine.

Wearing a long, black dress, she wowed the crowd as she was carried across the catwalk on a wooden throne by four trim men, becoming the first model with a disability to take the lead in a high-profile event in the country.

“I had the idea that I wanted to do a catwalk and show that a girl in a wheelchair can be perceived as a first-class professional”, she told AFP. For 23-year-old Kutas, it was the latest stage in a long journey.

In a wheelchair since birth due to cerebral palsy, she had struggled for years to make it as a model in the ex-Soviet state where disabled people all too often get left behind.

Kutas sent letters to modelling agencies — but the response was always the same polite refusals.

“They told me that I am very pretty, but they do not know how to promote me because the market is still not ready for this”, says Kutas.

– ‘Huge inspiration’ –
Kutas was born in Dnipro city, in the east of Ukraine, and went to an ordinary school. It was a bold step to take in 2000, when inclusive education was rare.

There were no ramps or elevators for special needs children in schools, so Kutas’s father or grandfather had to carry her up the stairs so that she could study with the other children.

“Yes, it was difficult, but it is generally difficult to be a person with limited physical mobility in our country. Everyone knows that,” Kutas says.

In 2012, Kutas was having lunch in a cafe when a photographer approached her and asked if she wanted to become a model.

She agreed and loved the process of having her picture taken so much that she soon began looking for other photographers to work with.

“When I realised that I wanted to do this, there did not seem to be a single model with a disability in the world”, Kutas says, recalling how she conducted a search for role models to follow and found none.

And then she suddenly came across a 1999 show of Alexander McQueen, the late British designer, where Aimee Mullins, a world-class Paralympic athlete, modelled in his statuesque and beautiful prosthetic legs.

“It was a huge stimulus for me, a huge inspiration. I wondered why, if it was possible back then, in 1999, why it could not be possible now for a girl in the wheelchair?”

When the Italian house FTL Moda invited models with disabilities to participate in New York Fashion Week recently, Kutas felt that the world was finally ready for a change.

– ‘Potential is hidden’ –
Fedir Vozianov, a 55-year-old Ukrainian designer, never expected the domestic market to be ready for such a dramatic change.

But when he met Kutas and saw her confidence, Vozianov says he understood that he, himself, was willing to give it a go. “People are not all the same — we are all different in this world”, Vozianov says.

“It would be strange to cut a part of this world off at the podium.” Today Kutas is not only a rising model, but also an adviser to the mayor in her native city.

She helps to adapt the city to the needs of disabled people, which is especially important due to the conflict between government forces and Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine’s east that has claimed more than 10,000 lives and wounded 23,000 people.

“I know that now is the moment that Ukraine simply cannot miss,” she says.

“It is always possible to grow, to evolve, to do something. The main thing is to create the conditions for these people whose great potential is hidden”.

HYPREP Explains Delay In Cleanup

There are fears that the aim of the cleanup of Ogoni environment might be defeated, if the initial capital injection of US$1 billion for the project is not reviewed.

Also, government bureaucracy has been blamed for the delay in the take off of the cleanup exercise.MEMBER of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) governing council, Professor Ben Naanen, Naanen, told The Guardian yesterday, that there are lot of challenges that must be taken care off before the cleanup could be said to be successful.

It would be recalled that the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which conducted an environmental audit of some contaminated sites in Ogoni, had in its recommendation to the Federal Government, suggested that an Environmental Restoration Fund for Ogoniland be set up with an initial capital injection of US$1 billion contributed by the oil industry and the government, to cover the first five years of the cleanup project.

However, Naanen has argued that it has become imperative for a review of the initial $1b to be expended in the first five years of the cleanup. He said cleaning up the environment without addressing some critical social issues, such as health and livelihood of the Ogoni people, would render the whole exercise futile.

He said: “We have never thought that the $1b will be enough because there are lots of challenges. You don’t just address the issue of the physical clean up. People have to address related social issues; livelihood, health and quite a number of issues that are related.

He explained that oil companies responsible for the pollution in Ogoni and the Federal Government have representatives in the HYPREP governing council and they have been discussing these issues with Ogoni community representatives on the board as well.

Naanen, who is also a former provisional president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), said when the governing council meets to map out programme-by-programme and project-by-project, members try to work out how through co-funding from developmental partners, they could attract additional funding.

According to him: “When we start planning on the implementation of the clean up process, we will know what to do. We will look at how additional money could be easily generated to the initial $1b.”

He pointed out that one of the reasons why the cleanup process had been delayed was because it took sometime for HYPREP, which is the implementing government agency to formally become a federal parastatal and there are all kinds of rules and procedure that has to be followed.

Hollywood actor turned activist Shia LaBeouf was arrested and charged Thursday after scuffling with a man during a live-stream protest against Donald Trump in New York, police said.

The 30-year-old star of 2014 movie “Fury” launched the protest on the day of Republican president’s inauguration last Friday. It is being live streamed 24 hours a day, seven days a week outside a New York museum.

Come rain, shine or near freezing temperatures, the project invites members of the public to repeat “He Will Not Divide Us” into a camera mounted onto a wall outside the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens.

LaBeouf, who set up the project with artists Nastja Sade Ronkko and Luke Turner, has appeared repeatedly before the camera, rallying the troops outside.

But at around midnight, he was accused of grabbing a 25-year-old man’s scarf, scratching his face and pushing the man to the ground, police confirmed.

Police, who happened to be in the area at the time, arrested the actor shortly before 1:00 am (0600 GMT), charging him with assault and harassment.

It was not immediately clear what triggered the alleged assault.

He has been released. LaBeouf has had repeated run-ins with the law and in 2014 appeared in court charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct after disrupting a performance of Broadway musical “Cabaret.”

Since Friday, a steady stream of mostly young people and mostly those living in the area, have taken part in the protest to vent their frustration with Trump.

“The mantra ‘HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US’ acts as a show of resistance or insistence, opposition or optimism, guided by the spirit of each individual participant and the community,” says the protest’s website.

LaBeouf has said the protest will last the entirety of Trump’s four-year term in office. Or until he steps down, which ever comes soonest.

According to a detailed report in Science, Tri Alpha Energy has already developed a machine that can hold hot plasma steady at 18 million°F (10 million°C) for 11.5 milliseconds.

The firm will use the funds to extend this time further and at even higher temperatures, and believes that it could have the world’s first commercial fusion reactor by 2027.

It is predicted that the advance further lead to fall in oil prices. Federal Government of Nigeria please note.

Fusion involves placing hydrogen atoms under high heat and pressure until they fuse into helium atoms. When deuterium and tritium nuclei – which can be found in hydrogen – fuse, they form a helium nucleus, a neutron and a lot of energy. This is down by heating the fuel to temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun.

Strong magnetic fields are used to keep the plasma away from the walls so that it doesn’t cool down and lost it energy potential. These are produced by superconducting coils surrounding the vessel, and by an electrical current driven through the plasma. For energy production. plasma has to be confined for a sufficiently long period for fusion to occur.

The particular type of fusion power Tri Alpha is working on is based on heating hydrogen atoms to temperatures of 5.4 billion°F (3 billion°C) – which is hotter than the surface of the sun. The heat creates plasma that has a mixture of electrons and ions. When ions in a plasma collide, they fuse together to form new atoms and release huge amounts of energy. It is a relatively simple concept, but the trick is in heating the gas to such a high temperature. Currently no known material can hold this heat.

Over the years, scientists have come up with two main methods to overcome this; cause an implosion that occurs rapidly, or use a magnetic field.

Tri Alpha Energy is using the latter option, but says it has made its breakthrough with an unusual reactor design – a long, tube that collides pairs of plasma donuts to produce heat.

According to a detailed report in Science, the team has placed magnets around a cigar shaped configuration that allows for firing angled plasma beams at one another.

The plasma that forms from its hydrogen and boron sample is then stabilised with beams of high-energy particles.

Tri Alpha is keeping many details about its project under wraps.

But Science has confirmed that the company now plans to create a fusion tube that boasts even more power and can reach hotter temperatures for longer periods of time.

Three persons, a female and two males, yesterday lost their lives in a multiple accident involving an articulated vehicle and nine others along the Upper Iweka Road, Onitsha in Anambra State.

Mr. Sunday Ajayi, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while confirming the incident, said nine casualties were taken to three hospitals.

Ajayi said the accident occurred at the Lagos Park axis of the Upper Iweka Road around 10:15a.m. “As at the time of reporting, we had nine casualties in three hospitals namely: Toronto Hospital, St. John Hospital and Bethsaida Specialist Hospital, all in Onitsha.

“Three persons have been confirmed dead while six others are seriously injured but are being treated in those hospitals,” Ajayi said.The sector commander said the ‘stressed’ articulated vehicle with registration number ENU69XY which was heading toward the Onitsha Bridgehead had a brake failure and rammed into several other vehicles on the road.

He attributed the high number of casualty to the use of only a section of the Enugu – Onitsha Expressway due to ongoing asphalting on the other section by the state government.

The sector commander said two commercial motorcycles, four commercial buses, a commercial tricycle, one RAV 4 SUV and a Toyota Hilux vehicles were involved in the multiple crashes.
