Oscar-nominated British actor John Hurt, known for his roles in “Elephant Man” and “Harry Potter”, has died aged 77 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, reports said Saturday citing his agent.

The versatile actor, who played Mr Ollivander in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and in two other films in the series, also starred in the movie adaptation of George Orwell’s novel “1984”.

He also played the role of Kane in “Alien”, who dies when the creature dramatically bursts from his chest.

He was twice nominated for an Oscar, in the best supporting actor category for his performance in the 1978 film “Midnight Express” as Max, a British man imprisoned in Turkey, and for his starring role in “Elephant Man” two years later.

He received a BAFTA award for “Midnight Express” as well as a Golden Globe in the best actor in a supporting role category. His death was confirmed to the British press agency PA by his agent Charles McDonald.

Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood paid tribute to the actor, writing on Twitter: “Very sad to hear of John Hurt’s passing. It was such an honor to have watched you work, sir.”

Among many tributes to flood in following news of his death, American actor Chris Evans described Hurt as “remarkable”.

“John Hurt was one of the most powerful, giving, and effortlessly real actors I’ve ever worked with Remarkable human being. U will be missed,” he wrote on Twitter.

Born on January 22, 1940 in Chesterfield, central England, Hurt first began his career as a teacher of drawing.

But he quickly moved to a life on camera and, after entering the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, he began his career in British film in the 1960s.

But it was at the end of the 1970s when his career definitively took off following back-to-back roles in “Midnight Express” and “Alien”.

Hurt, who appeared in some 140 films, often playing supporting roles, also maintained a strong television presence, making appearances in cult British series Doctor Who among others.

The actor, who received a total of four BAFTAs, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2014. His cancer was diagnosed the following year but he did not give up his profession.

For his final role, he played Father Richard McSorley in the biopic “Jackie”, the story of the former American First Lady, which was released in December in the US.

He was however forced to pull out of a play last July on the advice of his doctors. “It is therefore with great sadness and disappointment that I must withdraw,” he said at the time.

News recap: Of Buhari’s ‘fake’ death and Atiku’s ambition (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2jfAKZ3

The outgoing week was dominated by unsubstantiated news of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari’s death. Expectedly, the presidency was forced to denounce and deny such reports which were propagated by fake news sites, and, of course, were well received by some.

While that was happening, campaign posters of former Nigeria’s vice president Abubakar Atiku became ubiquitous in Kebbi. Is Turaki Adamawa already gearing up for 2019?

These and more are in our News Recap for the week. Read on!

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari

Troubles don’t come singly. And so was the case for the presidency during the week. Having to fight off deathly rumours about President Muhammadu Buhari was definitely not part of the plans the trio of Garba Shehu, Femi Adesina and Lai Mohammed had for the week, but they had to devote part of their time to discrediting rumours of either Buhari’s death or his terminal infirmity. On one occasion, the president had to remind us, stylishly, he’s still alive.

But the nagging questions are: Is the president terminally ill? If not, who wants him dead?

Being linked to death is not strange to some Fulani herdsmen. They are suspected to be behind the Southern Kaduna killings. And when travellers were robbed in two coordinated attacks on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at the beginning of the week, fingers were also pointed at them.

He could have died after fracturing his skull playing for his club Hull City against Chelsea in an EPL fixture, but Ryan Mason lived to see another day. The 25-year-old midfielder was in a stable condition after a successful surgery.

But this week isn’t all about ominous events. We caught glimpse of what could happen come 2019.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar

With the 2019 general elections about two years away, the campaign posters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is already being circulated across Kebbi State. The ex-VP who visited the state at the weekend during the Abdullahi Fodio 1805 book launch at the Emir of Gwandu’s palace, was surrounded by political supporters chanting “Sai Atiku Turaki Adamawa for President 2019.”

The artist announced his plans on Wednesday on his Instagram page, stating that protest would hold nationwide on February 5.

Not sure if he will pitch his tent with Atiku but it is quite obvious that the artist once known as Tuface is not a fan of the ruling APC. At least, for now. On Wednesday, the artist now known as 2Baba announced plans to lead a “massive nationwide protest” against the government on his Instagram page, stating that protest would hold on February 5.

“A call for good governance,” 2Baba said of his planned protest. “A call for [an] urgent explanation into the reckless economic downturn nationwide. A call for nationwide protests as we say No to the Executive, No to legislatures, No to judiciary…. You have all failed us.”

While many would heed 2Baba’s call, it is doubtful that as many would listen to Senator Yele Omogunwa’s recent call for corruption to be legalised. His reason: the vice is so pervasive that it has deprived the Nigerian people of certain benefits.

Dangote’s tomato processing company is not about to suffer a sudden death. According to the managing Director of Dangote Tomato Processing Company, Kano State, Abdulkarim Kaita, the firm would resume full operations in the first week of February.

Now, you can keep all those foreign tomato paste brands off your kitchen. Buy Nigerian!

To some techy stuff! German automaker BMW AG will dispatch a fleet of autonomous vehicles to U.S. and European cities in this year’s second half, the next step in its partnership with Mobileye NV and Intel Corp. to introduce fully self-driving vehicles by 2021.

And finally! To Cannabis.

cannabis

With the legalisation of marijuana on the rise across the world especially in the United States (U.S.), it is more important than ever to get a clear understanding of the drug’s health benefits and risks. The Guardian’s Chukwuma Muanya reported on the risks and benefits of the use of cannabis.

And that’s all on News Recap for this week. Adios!

Why I went back to school to study law — KOK

http://ift.tt/2k2nmVt

By Benjamin Njoku

Multiple award-winning actor, Kanayo.O.Kanayo who recently enrolled to study Law at the University of Abuja, after he bagged Masters degree from the University of Lagos, few years ago, has explained why he took the decision to go back to school.

In a brief chat with HVP, in Benin, recently, the veteran actor said, he decided to go back to school in order to prove those who believe that entertainers are not educated wrong. According to him, “Many people believe that we are not educated but I am here to prove them wrong.”

KOK, however, did not  shed more light on his law programme as he does not want to make it a public issue. But for whatever reason, the Imo State-born actor has paid his dues as far as the world of make-believe is concerned.

Alumni of the University of Lagos, KOK holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Philosophy and Masters Degree in Political Science from the same institution. He   hit the limelight after he acted Chief Omego in the pioneering movie ‘Living In Bondage’ ,  an instant hit that signalled a  new dawn in the Nigerian movie industry.

Tornadoes get N.5m to beat Rangers

http://www.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Niger-Tornadoes.png

Chairman of Niger Tornadoes, Adamu Aliyu, has challenged the players to beat defending champions Rangers international in tomorrow’s league tie and pocket N500,000 (Five hundred thousand Naira) already placed on the table.

Both Rangers and Tornadoes are heading into the match after what could pass for a good outing midweek with Tornadoes handing Wikki Tourist a 2-0 defeat while Rangers held Akwa United to a goalless draw away.

Tomorrow’s battle at the Cathedral will not be a tea party and will definitely be full of fireworks.   While the Flying Antelopes are working extremely hard to make the Cathedral a never lose arena, a motivated Tornadoes will definitely be on fire.

Tornadoes are not just playing for promise but believe in the chairman who backs words with action. Hon Adamu had earlier challenged the team to beat Wikki Tourist for N200, 000, and when they did he redeemed the sum while promising another.

Chidebere Blessing Ajoku’s brace, goal in each half was enough to deny the CAF Confederation Cup campaigners points at the Confluence Stadium Lokoja.

While addressing the players, Hon Aliyu noted that boosting the morale of the players was something that must be done in order to get best out of them, adding that player’s welfare remains paramount.

Okowa orders speedy renovation of NYSC camp in Issele-Uku (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2kDt3Iu

Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa has ordered the speedy renovation of the National Youth Service Corps’ Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state, so as to create a conducive environment for the corps’ members.

Okowa, while addressing the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Corps members at their swearing-in ceremony, said they were in the camp to undergo an orientation programme to put them in the best frame of mind for their future challenges, and implored them to imbibe all the lessons they will be taught and put them in use.

The governor disclosed that the renovation of the camp became necessary to allay fear of the unknown, especially the fear of reptiles and other dangerous animals, adding that the contractor had been sufficiently mobilized to complete the job on specification.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Engr. Jude Senebe, the governor urged the corps’ members to take the training in the camp serious, as it would enhance their productivity as capable adults to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of the country.

Man suffering from constipation

Man suffering from constipation

The best way to stay regular is to exercise, eat a healthy, fiber-rich diet, and drink plenty of water. But if you have trouble going, certain foods can help. It’s not the only factor, but fiber -which adds to the size and water content of your stool- is key. Women should shoot for 21 to 25 grams a day, and men, 30 to 38.

Pears
This sweet fruit is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, and it has a lot of fiber and water, which can help with constipation. One pear has only about 60 calories.

Popcorn
It’s not just perfect movie food – it can be a healthy snack any time, as long as you don’t bury it in salt and butter. But you may not know it’s loaded with fiber.

Watermelon
It does not have a lot of fiber, but it’s 92 per cent water, and that can encourage a bowel movement. It’s also chock full of nutrients, with antioxidants that help protect your cells, as well as vitamins A, B, and C, and lycopene, which helps shield you from UV rays.

Oatmeal
Have this for breakfast and you’ll be less hungry and less likely to snack during the day. It’s a good source of fiber, and the oats absorb lots of water, too, which helps with digestion. Bonus: It also may help lower LDL, or “bad cholesterol,” and gives you complex carbs, protein, calcium, and iron.

Almonds
You can put them on salads and desserts, eat them with yogurt and cheese, or grind them to make a tasty pie filling or pastry dough.

Turnip Greens
Sometimes overshadowed by their more famous cousins -kale, spinach and collard greens- these have long been a staple of Southern cooking. They’re traditionally cooked with salt pork or ham hocks for flavour, but you can use smoked turkey wings to lower the salt and fat.

Potato Salad
Cooled potatoes have fiber and a lot of something called “resistant starch.” This “resists” digestion, and some of it ends up in your large intestine, where it helps good bacteria grow.

Farro
An ancient strain of wheat that’s a staple in Italy, it has a hearty, chewy texture and a delicious nutty flavour. Try it instead of rice or potatoes for a fiber-rich starch with protein and calcium.

Prunes
Try not to think of Grandpa’s morning BM ritual – but he was on to something. Prunes can be good with yogurt or cheese or cooked with poultry and desserts. And they can really help get you going again, even better than some over-the-counter laxatives. It’s not clear why they work so well, but they have sorbitol- which helps your bowels take in more water – as well as fiber.

Lentils
These can make for a great a side dish (try them with sausage), and they’re good in salads, too. They can even be hearty enough to have as a main course, thanks to a healthy amount of protein. And, oh yeah, they help you poop.

The Executive Director of United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Ms. Ertharin Cousin, has said that one million returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Northeast are to be assisted with improved seeds and agricultural inputs in the process of rebuilding destroyed communities during this year’s cropping season.

The beneficiaries are drawn from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.Cousin disclosed this yesterday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, when a delegation of the WFP paid an official visit to Governor Ibrahim Gaidam at the Government House.

She said this year’s Agricultural Input Support (AGRIS) was to improve productivity of farmers to fight hunger and poverty in the zone.“Out of the three most affected states, Yobe alone has 350,000 people that will benefit from the WFP arrangement to reduce the levels of poverty and unemployment in the state.

“This agricultural programme was aimed at checking hunger and poverty among the people who suffered insurgency for over five years.”

She appreciated the role played by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for actualising the assistance for the less privileged in society and assured that the WFP would work hard towards returning peace, growth and even development of the affected region.

Gaidam, who was represented by his Deputy, Abubakar Aliyu, said over 600, 000 IDPs and other less privilege have benefited from WFP cash transfer and food assistance.

He also thanked WFP for establishing a centre for capacity development on humanitarian studies at the state university, adding that it would enhance the capacity of operators of humanitarian activities in the insurgency affected states.
