Indians establish free diabetes testing camps in Lagos

http://ift.tt/2ldw0n8

Diabetes Test

The Indian Cultural Association in Lagos and Bhojraj Chanrai Foundation, have imported a technology worth about  $40,000 for free non-invasive early detection of diabetes among Nigerians.

The association’s president, Sanjay Jain, told journalists in Lagos that the technology was meant to facilitate the operations of the association’s newly established free diabetes detection camps in Lagos.

Jain said the Indian community in Nigeria had always had the interest of “needy Nigerians” at heart, and decided to import the
technology for detecting diabetes seven years before complications.

“This new technology machine has been bought and imported to Nigeria, at the cost of $40,000. And, it is the only non-invasive detection system so far, with simple scanning test.

“We have found out that Type 2 Diabetes is the commonest in Nigeria today, and that more than six million people in the country, currently have diabetes.

“Medical findings have shown that Nigeria, unfortunately, currently has the highest mortality rate from diabetes,” he said. Head of the Indian charitable organisation enjoined the public, especially those living in Lagos State, to avail themselves of the free diabetes testing scheduled for Saturday, March 18 and Saturday, March 25.

“On these two Saturdays, we are going to organise free testing camps at our centre at No. 2 Cappa Avenue, Palmgrove Estate, Ilupeju, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

“Whoever wishes to benefit from this free testing for diabetes should come for the test. It is completely free for all, “he said. The president said that Indians had discovered that the high mortality rate from diabetes in Nigeria was due to improper diagnosis and expensive nature of its management.

He said that with the new technology, it would become easier and more accessible for more people to be diagnosed and counseled on how best to manage diabetes free of charge.

Jain said the benefits of the new system include early detection, no drawing of blood, quick test within six seconds, no fasting or pre-conditioning, different from traditional diagnostic methods and immediate test results.

LASTMA’s GM escapesDanfo accident

http://ift.tt/2laHbMN

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olawale Musa, escaped death by a whisker as a commercial bus driver, David Agiri, driving a suspected stolen vehicle with registration number FKJ 875XC at Oshodi almost ran over him.

The driver, while attempting to escape arrest, almost ran over Musa’s vehicle as well as the bus of the LASTMA monitoring team.Agiri was, however, arrested by LASTMA officials. He has been on the wanted list of the agency since February 23, 2017 for driving against traffic at Iyana Iba, on Lagos-Badagry Expressway but had evaded arrest.

He was able to escape due to the policy of the agency, which forbids officers from pursuing fleeing vehicles, but the long arm of the law later caught up with him when he was eventually arrested with the same vehicle last Thursday at Oshodi.

Further investigation of vehicle papers by LASTMA officials revealed that the vehicle number plates did not correspond with the vehicle documents as the number plates belonged to a Port Harcourt resident with a different name and type of vehicle.

In addition, Agiri, who is a native of Badagry and a resident of Agbara town in Ogun State, is alleged to be a serial traffic offender with a penchant for driving against traffic.

Commenting on the incident, Musa said the agency’s monitoring team on routine patrol caught the driver of the unpainted commercial bus at Iyana-Iba driving against traffic but the effort to apprehend Agiri proved abortive as he mobilised social miscreants to attack the traffic officials.

Agiri, who has been handed over to the police at theMosafejo Division, for further investigation and arraignment in court, confessed to flouting the traffic laws and that the number plates found on the vehicle did not actually belong to him.

Speaking further, the LASTMA boss assured Lagosians that the agency would not relent in ensuring seamless flow of traffic in the state, adding that impunities by some motorists would also not be condoned.

According to Musa, the era of fragrant disobedience of traffic laws in the state was over, warning commercial bus drivers not to constitute themselves into a nuisance as anybody caught violating the law would be dealt with accordingly.

Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa has ordered the speedy renovation of the National Youth Service Corps’ Orientation Camp in Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state, so as to create a conducive environment for the corps’ members.

Okowa, while addressing the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Corps members at their swearing-in ceremony, said they were in the camp to undergo an orientation programme to put them in the best frame of mind for their future challenges, and implored them to imbibe all the lessons they will be taught and put them in use.

The governor disclosed that the renovation of the camp became necessary to allay fear of the unknown, especially the fear of reptiles and other dangerous animals, adding that the contractor had been sufficiently mobilized to complete the job on specification.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Engr. Jude Senebe, the governor urged the corps’ members to take the training in the camp serious, as it would enhance their productivity as capable adults to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of the country.

Man suffering from constipation

Man suffering from constipation

The best way to stay regular is to exercise, eat a healthy, fiber-rich diet, and drink plenty of water. But if you have trouble going, certain foods can help. It’s not the only factor, but fiber -which adds to the size and water content of your stool- is key. Women should shoot for 21 to 25 grams a day, and men, 30 to 38.

Pears
This sweet fruit is packed with vitamins and antioxidants, and it has a lot of fiber and water, which can help with constipation. One pear has only about 60 calories.

Popcorn
It’s not just perfect movie food – it can be a healthy snack any time, as long as you don’t bury it in salt and butter. But you may not know it’s loaded with fiber.

Watermelon
It does not have a lot of fiber, but it’s 92 per cent water, and that can encourage a bowel movement. It’s also chock full of nutrients, with antioxidants that help protect your cells, as well as vitamins A, B, and C, and lycopene, which helps shield you from UV rays.

Oatmeal
Have this for breakfast and you’ll be less hungry and less likely to snack during the day. It’s a good source of fiber, and the oats absorb lots of water, too, which helps with digestion. Bonus: It also may help lower LDL, or “bad cholesterol,” and gives you complex carbs, protein, calcium, and iron.

Almonds
You can put them on salads and desserts, eat them with yogurt and cheese, or grind them to make a tasty pie filling or pastry dough.

Turnip Greens
Sometimes overshadowed by their more famous cousins -kale, spinach and collard greens- these have long been a staple of Southern cooking. They’re traditionally cooked with salt pork or ham hocks for flavour, but you can use smoked turkey wings to lower the salt and fat.

Potato Salad
Cooled potatoes have fiber and a lot of something called “resistant starch.” This “resists” digestion, and some of it ends up in your large intestine, where it helps good bacteria grow.

Farro
An ancient strain of wheat that’s a staple in Italy, it has a hearty, chewy texture and a delicious nutty flavour. Try it instead of rice or potatoes for a fiber-rich starch with protein and calcium.

Prunes
Try not to think of Grandpa’s morning BM ritual – but he was on to something. Prunes can be good with yogurt or cheese or cooked with poultry and desserts. And they can really help get you going again, even better than some over-the-counter laxatives. It’s not clear why they work so well, but they have sorbitol- which helps your bowels take in more water – as well as fiber.

Lentils
These can make for a great a side dish (try them with sausage), and they’re good in salads, too. They can even be hearty enough to have as a main course, thanks to a healthy amount of protein. And, oh yeah, they help you poop.
