Infantino to talk, party in southern Africa

FIFA president Gianni Infantino will be in South Africa and Zimbabwe this week to meet African football bosses and attend a birthday party.
He has invited all 54 African national football association presidents to Johannesburg for two days of meetings, starting Tuesday.
The 46-year-old Swiss-Italian leaves for Harare Thursday to attend the birthday party of Zimbabwe football chief Philip Chiyangwa.
Organisers of the two-day summit said Infantino will explain changes to the global game, including expanding the World Cup to 48 teams from 2026.
African officials have long argued for more than the five World Cup places they compete for, even though teams representing the continent consistently underperform.
No African team has reached the semi-finals and the first time two nations from the continent reached the knockout phase was in Brazil three years ago.
Under the 48-team format, there has been media speculation that Africa could get up to nine slots.
Chiyangwa, recently elected head of southern Africa football umbrella football body COSAFA, has come under fire over his birthday celebrations.
CAF president Issa Hayatou has condemned the Zimbabwean for inviting to the party various non-COSAFA African officials who will be in Johannesburg.
Chiyangwa is campaign manager for Ahmad Ahmad, a former Malagasy government minister who is challenging Hayatou on March 16 for the CAF presidency.
Hayatou, who has ruled CAF for 29 years, reportedly believes the party is a front and the real purpose is to rally support for Ahmad.
The Cameroonian, who is seeking an eighth four-year term as head of the Cairo-based organisation, has been challenged for the post only twice.
He crushed Angolan Armando Machado and Botswanan Ismael Bhamjee in elections, but seems to view Ahmad as a more serious threat.
CAF did not support Infantino in the 2016 FIFA elections, publicly backing Bahraini Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al Khalifa instead.

Bale returns as Zidane holds other stars in reserve…See full details

Gareth Bale will make his return from a three-month injury layoff when Real Madrid host Espanyol on Saturday, coach Zinedine Zidane confirmed on Friday.
However, Zidane has handed a weekend off to a host of other key men as Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos and Keylor Navas were not included in the Frenchman’s 19-man squad.
Bale hasn’t featured since suffering ankle ligament damage in November and is expected to be eased back into action as a second-half substitute.
“Bale is with us. He will be in the squad and the idea is that he has minutes,” Zidane said on Friday.
“He is an important player. He has quality, pace, we know the damage he can do to the opponents.
“We are happy and he is even more so to get back playing. He is desperate to return.”
Madrid can move four points clear of Barcelona with a game in hand at the top of La Liga should they record a 10th consecutive victory over Espanyol.
However, after the demands of an intense 3-1 Champions League last 16 first leg win over Napoli in midweek and a La Liga trip to Valencia to come on Wednesday, Zidane insisted he didn’t want to take any risks with the fitness of Navas, Ramos, Modric or Benzema.
“We have two or three players with niggles. Not significant injuries, but niggles.”
Navas’s absence means Zidane’s son Luca is included in the squad as the third choice goalkeeper.
Zidane has already handed a first-team debut to his eldest son Enzo this season.
However, Kiko Casilla will start in goal, whilst Zidane confirmed that Alvaro Morata will finally get his chance to start in place of Benzema up front.
Spanish international Morata has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu come the end of the season after becoming frustrated at his lack of action since rejoining the European champions from Juventus in June.
“I don’t want him to go. Alvaro is at home here,” added Zidane.
“He has had minutes, although fewer than Karim. Tomorrow he will start and I know that it is not the last game that he will start.”

Lawyer sues Kashamu over alleged threat to life
Buruji Kashamu
A lawyer, Mr Babatunde Olokun, has slammed a N10 million suit on Sen. Buruji Kashamu (PDP-Ogun).
Olokun is pressing charges against Kashamu over alleged unlawful arrest, continuous threat to life, harassment and infringement on fundamental human rights.
Olokun, who filed the application at the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleged that Kashamu made the threats through phone calls.
He asked the court to declare the acts unconstitutional and a violation of his rights.
The lawyer also prayed the court to stop Kashamu from using the police or any other law enforcement agent to harass, intimidate or molest him as well as or interfering with his personal liberty.
When the matter was called on Wednesday, Counsel to Olokun, Mr Stanley Iji, prayed court for a short adjournment, saying that the respondents had yet to be served the processes.
The Judge, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, noted that this was the second time the applicant had failed to serve the processes on the respondents.
The respondents are Kashamu, Onamusi Onadeko and the inspector-general of police.
Dimgba warned that the case would be struck out on the next adjourned date if Olokun failed to serve the processes on Kashamu and the others.
The judge adjourned the matter till Feb. 17 for hearing.

UK speaker criticised over Trump parliament tirade
The Speaker of Britain’s House of Commons came under fire from government MPs on Tuesday for saying he was “strongly opposed” to Donald Trump addressing parliament during the US president’s state visit later this year.
John Bercow’s shock tirade on Monday was applauded by many in the opposition ranks but had members of the ruling Conservative Party accusing him of hypocrisy and disregarding his duty of neutrality.
The speaker said such Trump giving a speech was “not an automatic right” and that “opposition to racism and sexism” needed to be considered.
He said he was already against Trump addressing lawmakers in Westminster Hall, and that he was “even more strongly opposed” after the president’s travel ban on visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries.
But Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi, who has been critical of Trump’s travel ban, said the fact that the speaker had become the story was “a bad place to be”.
He pointed out that the speaker had welcomed Chinese president Xi Jinping, despite human rights concerns, and the emir of Kuwait, which bans British dual nationals of Israeli origin, to speak in parliament.
– ‘Unwise to ban him’ –
“I am against the travel ban… but it’s unwise to ban the legitimately-elected president of the United States of America, our closest ally, when we’re trying to urge them not to shoot from the hip,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
Many opposition Labour and Scottish National Party MPs applauded the speech, while Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn backed the speaker on Twitter, calling on Prime Minister Theresa May to cancel the state visit.
The government has insisted the visit will go ahead.
“We’re looking forward to the visit and we’re sure it will be a success,” May’s spokesman said on Tuesday.
“What John Bercow suggests to parliament is a matter for parliament,” he said.
The House of Lords speaker is expected to making a statement on the issue later on Tuesday.
– ‘Very disappointing’ –
However, Tory MP Crispin Blunt warned that Bercow would have to deal with “the consequences” of his comments, stressing that speakers “do not express their opinion.
“That’s the entire point, otherwise they can’t remain neutral and above the political fray,” he said.
US Republican Congressman Joe Wilson called the comments “very disappointing” during an interview with BBC’s Newsnight, saying it was “a slap at the Republican Party.”
May has come under intense pressure over the invitation, which she extended while visiting the White House just hours before he announced his travel ban.
The ban has since been temporarily suspended by a federal judge.
More than 1.8 million people have signed a public petition calling on ministers to cancel Trump’s visit, which MPs are due to debate later this month, although a recent poll showed that only 36 percent of Britons opposed the visit.
The date and details of the state visit are still being worked out and a spokeswoman for the speaker’s office said the government had not made any request for Trump to address parliament.
But a speech to both Houses of Commons and Lords has been a feature of many previous state visits, including one by Barack Obama in 2011.
The House of Lords speaker Norman Fowler is expected to make a statement on the issue later on Tuesday.
More than 160 of parliament’s 650 MPs have signed a parliamentary motion opposing an address by Trump, citing the travel ban and his comments on torture and women.
May on Monday told MPs that last week she had urged her fellow European leaders to “engage patiently and constructively” with the new US administration.
Trump’s criticism of the NATO military alliance and his prediction that the EU could fall apart following Britain’s vote to leave has caused alarm in European capitals.

NECA wants CBN obey court ruling on N50 stamp duty
CBN building
The Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) on Monday urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop deduction of N50 stamp duty, in compliance with a Court of Appeal ruling.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that CBN in January 2016, directed banks to deduct N50 as stamp duty on any bank deposit with value of N1,000 and above into current account.
However, in a ruling on April 21, 2016, the Court of Appeal directed an end to the deduction, describing it as illegal.
In a statement in Lagos on Monday, the Director-General of NECA, Mr Segun Oshinowo, said that the CBN had failed to comply with the ruling.
According to Oshinowo, the deduction did not only affect corporate bodies but all Nigerians, including the vulnerable.
”NECA and organised businesses had opposed attempts by the Nigeria Postal Service to compel companies to affix a N50 postal stamp on all receipts, invoices and documents evidencing transaction of N1, 000 and above.
”NECA had also kicked against the CBN directive to banks based on its illegality and in the light of a pending litigation in the court on the matter,” he said.
The director-general said that it was worrisome that the apex bank had refused to comply with the ruling in the matter between Kasmal International Services Ltd. and Access Bank and 23 others.
”We (NECA) are concerned about the failure of CBN to reverse its directive to banks to halt charging of N50 per transaction.
”We advise the apex body to direct banks to stop further deductions and refund all deductions in the past,” Oshinowo said.
He appealed to government agencies to shun policies that would increase burden on the citizens.

Second-tier Wolverhampton Wanderers ensured Liverpool’s season went from bad to worse as they knocked the seven-times winners out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at Anfield on Saturday.
Defeat meant Liverpool, 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, had been knocked out of two cup competitions in a matter of four days following their 2-0 aggregate loss to Southampton in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday.
Wolves’s Richard Stearman stunned the home crowd by putting the visitors 1-0 up inside the first minute when he headed in a free-kick.
And four minutes before half-time, Wolves doubled their lead when Andreas Weimann finished off an excellent counter-attack move.
But, having rarely threatened, Liverpool pulled a goal back when Divock Origi scored from close range with four minutes left following a corner.
Nevertheless Wolves, who beat another Premier League side in Stoke in the third round, hung on to secure victory as Liverpool suffered a third home defeat in eight days as more than 8,000 away fans celebrated at Anfield.
