Minnows Lincoln stun Burnley in FA Cup…See full details

Sean Raggett scored an 89th-minute winner as non-league Lincoln City stunned Burnley 1-0 on Saturday to claim one of the biggest upsets in the history of the FA Cup.

Eighty-one places below Burnley in the English football pyramid, fifth-tier Lincoln prevailed when defender Raggett squeezed a header over the line following a late corner at Turf Moor.

Lincoln are the first non-league team to reach the FA Cup’s last eight since Queens Park Rangers in 1914.

They are the eighth side from below England’s four fully professional divisions to have beaten top-flight opposition since World War II and only the second to have done so since 1989.

Burnley drew 1-1 at home to runaway Premier League leaders Chelsea last weekend and have beaten Liverpool and champions Leicester City on home turf this season.

Lincoln join Hereford United, who toppled Newcastle United in 1972, and Sutton United, conquerors of Coventry City in 1989, among the ranks of the FA Cup’s non-league giant-killers.

Sutton, also of the fifth-tier National League, will hope to pull off another upset when they host Arsenal on Monday.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche made six changes to his starting XI and was quickly made aware that his side were in for a scrap as Lincoln’s Nathan Arnold squared for Jack Muldoon to sweep a first-time shot over the bar.

There was an early setback for Burnley when Johann Berg Gudmundsson was forced off in the 20th minute after a foul by Alan Power, with George Boyd coming on.

Burnley were unable to convert the handful of chances they created, with Lincoln goalkeeper Paul Farman saving from Andre Gray and Joey Barton, while Scott Arfield and Gray shot off-target.

Burnley’s frustrations manifested themselves in some antagonistic behaviour by renowned brawler Barton during the second half.

He escaped censure for stamping on Matt Rhead’s foot and then pretending to have been struck by the Lincoln striker and was later booked for slapping Terry Hawkridge.

With a replay beckoning, a deep corner from the right was headed back across goal by Lincoln captain Luke Waterfall and Raggett met it with a header that Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton could not keep out.

Toure, Jesus named in City’s Champions League squad

Yaya Toure capped his return to the Manchester City fold as he and new signing Gabriel Jesus were included in their squad for the Champions League knockout stages.

Toure was left out of City’s 25-man list for the group stages, sparking a row between boss Pep Guardiola and the Ivory Coast midfielder’s agent that led to him being frozen out of the side.

But since that dispute was resolved in November, Toure has reclaimed a place in the team and been in fine form, with his latest dominant display coming in City’s 4-0 win at West Ham on Wednesday.

Toure’s inclusion in the Champions League squad comes as no surprise, with fellow midfielder Ilkay Gundogan likely to miss the rest of the season through injury.

Recent signing Jesus, who scored his first league goal since his move from Palmeiras in the West Ham win, comes into the European squad in place of Kelechi Iheanacho.

“I’m very happy for the goal, very happy for the performance and especially for the win,” Jesus told City TV.

“This is the spirit I think we have to have and if we keep that spirit we will be able to achieve our goals.

“The reception from the club has been great, my team-mates are helping a lot and the process of adaptation is going great.

“I honestly thought it would be more difficult but thanks to my family, my friends and my team-mates it’s going really well.”

Having now been registered at the club for two years, Iheanacho can be removed from the main squad quota but remain eligible as a player named on the “B” list.

City face Monaco in the Champions League last 16 as they aim to win the competition for the first time.

26 Nigerians to participate in $2m Sustainable Construction Competition

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Lagos – LafargeHolcim, a leading cement manufacturer said 26 participants, including 12 students from Nigeria have submitted entries for its $2 million Sustainable Construction Competition.

A statement by Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Director, Communication and Public Affairs of the company in Lagos on Thursday, said the competition was geared towards enhancing growth in the construction industry.

Mr Michel Puchercos, Group Managing Director, Lafarge Africa Plc, in the statement, was elated that more Nigerians tapped into the opportunity offered by the award.

“Nigerian professionals and students participating in the competition live and work in some of fastest growing cities in the world.

“The competition is therefore an opportunity to address the myriad challenges of urbanization as it develops.

“In Nigeria, like many other emerging economies, urbanization is outstripping the pace at which homes, offices, roads and bridges are being built.

“An infrastructure deficit and a low degree of industrialization coupled with the amount of natural resources required highlights of the important role, which the construction industry will play in the socio-economic and environmental future of Nigeria,” he said.

According to the statement, the award is relevant to Nigeria because of its huge population, rapid urbanisation and projection for it to become the third biggest country in the world by 2050.

“As at 2016, the combined population of Abuja, Benin City, Ibadan, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Onitsha and Port Harcourt (the fastest growing cities in Nigeria) was 31.4 million.

“Their number is expected to swell to 54 million by 2030, according to UN Habitat. There is a pressing need for sustainable urban design and construction in Nigeria,” the statement said.

It added that the award seeks to recognise and reward high profile projects from professionals and bold ideas from students in the building and environment sector that combine sustainable construction solutions with architectural excellence.

It also seeks projects or ideas that institute the five principles of Progress, People, Planet, Prosperity and Place in providing sustainability for future constructions.

It said that engineers, architects, builders, planners, construction firms, project owners, students and NGOs in the 90 countries where LafargeHolcim operates are eligible to apply.

Entries for the competition, which commenced on July 4, 2016 is expected to close on March 21.
