Ex-Egyptian president Mubarak to be released…Read full details

Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown as president of Egypt in an uprising in 2011, will be released from detention in a military hospital, the public prosecutor ruled on Monday, his lawyers and judicial sources said.

Asked if Mubarak would go home on Monday, he said: “No but tomorrow or after tomorrow.”

NAN reports that on March 3, Egypt Appeals Court found Hosni Mubarak innocent of involvement in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his 30-year rule, the final ruling in a landmark case.

The trial of Mubarak, who was toppled in one of the tumultuous uprisings which shook the Arab world, captivated viewers as he appeared in a courtroom cage on charges ranging from corruption to complicity in the murder of protesters.

Mubarak was originally sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for conspiring to murder 239 demonstrators during the 18-day revolt, an uprising that sowed chaos and created a security vacuum but also inspired hope for democracy and social justice.

But an appeals court ordered a retrial that culminated in 2014 in the case against the ageing former president and his senior officials being dropped.

An appeal by the public prosecution led to final retrial by the Court of Cassation.

After a hearing that took most of the day, Judge Ahmed Abdel Qawi announced to cheers of approval from Mubarak supporters who filled the court room: “The court has found the defendant innocent.’’

According to a judicial source the court also rejected demands by lawyers of the victims to reopen civil suits. The source said that left no remaining option for appeal or retrial.

The families of those killed, who had attended the trial early on, were not present, their lawyers condemned the verdict as politically motivated. “This ruling is not fair and not just, the judiciary is politicised,’’ said Osman al-Hefnawy, a lawyer for the families.

Many Egyptians who lived through Mubarak’s rule view it as a period of autocracy and crony capitalism. His overthrow led to Egypt’s first free election, which brought in Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Mursi only lasted a year in office; however, after mass protests against his rule in 2013 prompted an overthrow by then army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who later went on to win a presidential election in 2014.

Sisi has since launched a crackdown on Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood, which has been banned as a terrorist organisation.

Hundreds of Mursi supporters were killed in a single day and thousands were jailed, with the dragnet quickly widening to include secular activists who were at the forefront of the 2011 uprising but opposed Muslim Brotherhood rule.

By contrast, Mubarak-era figures are gradually being cleared of charges and a series of laws limiting political freedoms has raised fears among activists that the old regime is back.

Mubarak has long maintained his innocence in the case and has said history would judge him a patriot who served his country selflessly.

Mubarak, 88, got into a helicopter after the verdict to return to the hospital in the leafy Cairo suburb of Maadi where he has already completed a three year sentence in a separate corruption case the only one in which he was convicted.

Fuming Mourinho shows strain as United problems mount

Jose Mourinho is under fire for his furious reaction to decisions that went against Manchester United in their controversial draw with Hull, but Phil Jones says his manager had every right to lose his cool.

Mourinho was in a foul mood after referee Mike Jones failed to clamp down on what he saw as Hull’s time-wasting or show Tigers striker Oumar Niasse a second yellow card for a high challenge on Marcos Rojo.

After storming out of a post-match television interview, he launched into an angry rant about perceived inconsistencies in a post-match press conference following Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Mourinho claimed he is judged by a different set of rules to rival managers, alluding to his own stadium ban last season during his time as Chelsea manager, and the recent behaviour of his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger and Liverpool rival Jurgen Klopp.

Wenger is serving a four-game touchline ban for abusive language and pushing an official against Burnley, while Klopp revealed he had apologised after screaming in the fourth official’s face during his side’s draw against Chelsea this week.

“You know clearly that I am different,” Mourinho said. “I am different. The rules for me are different.

“I am different in everything. I watched my team play in a hotel (when banned), I was forbidden to go to the stadium, my assistant had a six-match stadium ban and he didn’t touch anyone.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), one fourth official told a manager: ‘I enjoy very much your passion, so do what you want to do.’

“Today I was told sit down or I have to send you to the stands, so everything is different for me.”

– Paranoid –
Klopp refused to be drawn into a war of words with Mourinho, who has served two touchline bans this season, but hinted he didn’t believe the United manager’s complaints were valid.

“Maybe I was lucky with what the fourth official said because I’ve never heard something like this before. There are different ways to handle the situation,” Klopp said on Thursday.

“It is quite an emotional game and to switch off emotions is not that simple.

“We struggle — not only myself and Jose but Arsene Wenger and a lot of other people struggle.

“We are all different, sometimes we get a fine, sometimes not. It’s not what we want to do nor is it a tactic.

“It was worse with me when I was younger. I have already improved but I had no idea why he (Mourinho) spoke about me.”

Mourinho’s paranoid demeanour must be concerning for the United hierarchy so soon in his reign.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss, who took over at Old Trafford in the close-season, has traditionally cut a more isolated and angst-ridden figure in the last months of his various jobs.

But, with United struggling to live up to his expectations, he already appears agitated and on edge.

United have fallen four points adrift of the top four after their third successive league draw and, with the title realistically out of reach, even a place in next season’s Champions League can’t be taken for granted.

With Mourinho’s frustration mounting, he might at least have been encouraged that his players share his pain and are determined to make amends.

“We said before the game that this was our chance to put some pressure on the teams above us,” United defender Jones told MUTV.

“We knew that teams around us would slip up and they have done, but we couldn’t capitalise on it.

“We’re bitterly disappointed. The lads are down in the dressing room, as you’d expect.”

Old foes Atletico, Barca clash for Cup final place…See full details

Barcelona will be without Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets once more as they face old foes Atletico Madrid in a fifth two-legged clash between the sides in four seasons with a place in the Copa del Rey final at stake on Wednesday.

The presence of the Spanish international duo was badly missed as Barca slipped further behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga in a controversial 1-1 draw at Real Betis at the weekend.

Atletico have won only once in nine games against Barca in the three years since Luis Enrique took charge, but Los Rojiblancos have knocked Barca out of the Champions League in two of the past three seasons.

“They are always difficult to play against,” said Enrique on Tuesday.

“It will be a great atmosphere and it is a tie worthy of a semi-final.”

Barca got the better of Atletico 4-2 on aggregate in a bad-tempered tie when the sides last met in the Cup two seasons ago as the Catalans went on to win the treble.

And Enrique defended his decision to heavily rotate his squad during a demanding January if Barca are to have any chance of repeating that feat as they chase down Madrid in La Liga and face Paris Saint-Germain on their return to Champions League action on February 14.

“If I don’t rotate, we won’t get to February 15. Between injuries, suspensions and tiredness, there is no other way. I rotate or we don’t challenge in all competitions.”

Enrique has at least been able to recall midfielder Rafinha from injury to help cover the gaps left by Iniesta and Busquets.

However, the one area the Barca boss has been reluctant to rotate is up front and all three of the superstar trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar look set to start again at the Vicente Calderon.

– ‘Magical night’ –
Atletico are also looking to bounce back as they were outplayed and held 0-0 by Alaves in league action at the weekend to slip 10 points back of Real in fourth.

However, their last season at the Calderon could still be salvaged by Cup success and Fernando Torres called on the Atletico fans to create a “magical” atmosphere on one of the last big nights at the Calderon before moving to a new 67,000 capacity stadium next season.

“I am sure the Atletico fans will fill the Calderon and make us experience a magical night,” said the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker.

“The game on Wednesday ought to be our only concern and headache right know because we know how difficult the game against Barcelona will be, but we hope to get the win in front of our own fans.”

Atletico will be without the injured Jan Oblak and Jose Maria Gimenez, but captain Gabi will return after being suspended on Saturday.

Whoever goes through over the two legs will be huge favourites to win the Cup come May with Real Madrid’s conquerors Celta Vigo facing Alaves in the other semi-final.

Neither side have ever won the Copa del Rey with Alaves’ run to the last four equalling their best ever return, whilst Celta have been runners-up on three occasions.

Celta host the first leg on Thursday and will welcome back a host of first team regulars who were rested for Saturday’s 2-0 win at Leganes.
