The Ekiti State Government on Friday declared a three-day mourning in honour of the late Military Governor of the old Western Region, Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo.
Gov. Ayodele Fayose, who also signed a condolence register opened by the government, announced this in a state-wide broadcast in Ado-Ekiti.
Fayose explained that the declaration was in recognition of the fatherly role the late retired army general played in uplifting the entire western region.
Late Adebayo was also renowned for uniting the people towards the path of integration.
The governor conveyed the condolences of his family and the state government to one of the children of the deceased, who was the first civilian governor of Ekiti state, Chief Niyi Adebayo.
The State House of Assembly also commiserated with the people of Iyin-Ekiti in Ekiti state and the entire South-West over the demise of the late general.
Its Speaker, Mr Kola Oluwawole, in a statement signed on his behalf by Dr Samuel Omotoso, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Youth and Sports, noted that the death of Adebayo was a colossal loss to the country.
The speaker described the death of Gen. Adebayo as the end of a glorious era for the country.
He said the late Adebayo was a courageous and dependable soldier, who dedicated his life to the course of Nigerian.
“He was an illustrious son of Ekiti state.
“He was an elder statesman, whose counsel would be missed at this crucial time in the history of our nation,” Oluwawole said.

The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) on Thursday said the Commission and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had moved to intervene in the Etisalat loan issue.
The Director of Public Affairs of NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo said this in a statement issued in Abuja.
“After a meeting on Thursday afternoon in Abuja between the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta and the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele and his team, a decision was reached to intervene in the loan issue between Etisalat Nigeria and a consortium of commercial banks.
“The meeting which was held at the CBN in Abuja was convened by the financial regulator at the instance of NCC and the telecom regulator to further deliberate on how best to stop the attempt by the banks to take over Etisalat.
“At the end of the meeting, the CBN agreed to invite Etisalat management and the banks to a meeting tomorrow, Friday, toward finding an amicable resolution,’’ he said.
Ojobo said that the NCC as a regulator of the telecom industry had moved quickly to intervene earlier in the week by reaching out to the CBN because it was convinced of the negative impact such takeover move would have on the industry.
He added that NCC was worried about the fate of the over 20 million Etisalat subscribers and the wrong signals this might send to potential investors in the Telecom industry.
It was reported that on March 8, Etisalat was had been taken over by three banks because of its N541.8 billion debt.
The Head of Public Relations, Etisalat Nigeria, Ms Oluseyi Osuntedo, dispelled the talk that banks had taken over the company.
Osuntedo said that discussions were still ongoing between the banks and the company.
“Discussions are going on; nobody is taking up the company.
“It is not true that we are being picketed, whoever gave the information is not telling the truth,” she said.
A consortium of some foreign and Nigerian banks, including Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank and Zenith Bank, have been having a running battle with the mobile telephone operator, over a loan facility totalling 1.72 billion dollars (about N541.8 billion) obtained in 2015.
The banks said their attempt to recover the loan by all means, was fuelled by the pressure from the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), demanding immediate cut down on the rate of their non-performing loans.

NCC appears not to be favourably disposed to the takeover proposal as it believed that Etisalat is not only a viable going concern, but also willing and able to negotiate the servicing of its loans.
Etisalat is Nigeria’s fourth largest telecoms operator with about 21 million subscribers as at January 2017, according to the NCC. It commenced business in Nigeria in 2009.

A Professor of Educational Psychology, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Aisha Madawaki, has identified gender equity as panacea for growth and development of any organised society.
Madawaki said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Thursday on the to commemorate the 2017 International Women’s Day.
”For any development to take place in the society, there has to be gender equity,” Madawaki, also a former Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state,’’ she said.
She stressed the need for women to be given more responsibilities alongside the men in the affairs of the country and the world at large.
”Women are very peaceful, understanding, patience and can endure hardship. They are also easily contented and less corrupt than men.’’
The don, who is on sabbatical leave to the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Sokoto, noted that women in the country had comparative advantage in terms of entrenching democracy.
Madawaki said that records showed that 54 per cent of registered voters in Nigeria were women.
She, however, expressed concern that ‘’a very insignificant number of them are holding elective positions and appointments across the nation.’’
“In Sokoto State, there is no single woman councilor, chairman, state or federal lawmaker.
”Majority of the appointments in senior government positions like Directors and Permanent Secretaries, are held by men.”
Madawaki, commended the three tiers of government for taking women along, but stressed that ‘’women are not looking for equality, but equity.’’
”It is high time women participated fully in politics and other sectors in the country.”

The Cross River Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) said it would conduct council elections in the state on June 17.
Chairman of the commission, Dr Mike Ushie, stated this on Thursday in Calabar while addressing representatives of political parties and other stakeholders.
He advised registered political parties in the state to visit the commission’s office to obtain the required forms.
He said: “political parties and their candidates should visit CROSIEC Headquarters for first-hand information about the various forms and fees as contained in our guidelines and published on the commission’s website and notice board.
“This is to avoid misrepresentation and misinterpretation of the commission on the issue of election.’’
Ushie added that any information submitted by candidates or their political parties would be verified and tendered in any court or tribunal.
He said that conducting credible election was the commission’s desire, and called for support from all stakeholders.
The tenure of the last elected council administrators in the state ended in December, 2016 and the state government directed the Heads of Administration in the councils to take over.
To ensure that council elections were conducted, opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state went to the court and obtained an injunction restraining the government from appointing caretaker committees for the councils.

No fewer than 171 Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya on Tuesday aboard a chartered Nouvelair aircraft with registration number TS-1NB.
Journalists report that the aircraft landed about 4.18pm at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Newsmen report that another batch comprising 161 Nigerians, had earlier on Feb. 14 also voluntarily returned from the North African country where they had been stranded enroute Europe.
The new sets of returnees were brought back by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerian Embassy in Libya.
They were received at the Hajj Camp area of the airport by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Protection of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police.
Also on ground to receive them were officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Air Commodore Salisu Mohammed, Director, Search and Rescue, NEMA, who gave a breakdown of the returnees, said they were made up of of 49 males, 109 females, seven children and six infants.
Addressing newsmen, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the IOM for facilitating the return of the Nigerians.
She said : “Like I told them, they are not criminals.These are people that have gone in search for greener pastures. However, it turned out to be a terrible experience for them.
“They shouldn’t be ashamed of themselves. Now they are back home and Mr President has personally conveyed his greetings to them and to let them know that they are back in Nigeria and there is no better time than now. “Times are tough, things are difficult but your country is the best place to be. ”
According to her, the Federal Government, IOM and some states have put up programmes in place to rehabilitate Nigerians who volunteered to return from Libya in order to reintegrate them into the society.
“The question is, how long are we going to keep evacuating them? So there is going to be another evacuation and a final one when we will tell Nigerians who are stranded in Libya to come back home. “After that it will be difficult getting IOM to do the evacuation.
“A lot of them don’t know where they are going to. There is a lot of ignorance here. Some of them are trafficked and they get there with nothing.
“The message here is that illegal migration is not worth it because as tough as the country is today, you are better off here than being in those places,” Dabiri-Erewa said .
She reiterated the government’s committment to the welfare of Nigerians all over the world, stressing that it was currently addressing the issue of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
The senior special assistant described the attacks as shameful, noting that it was wrong to generalise Nigerians in the country as criminals.
One of the returnees, Miss Gift Peters said she got to Libya 11 months ago after being deceived that she was being taken to Germany.
“When I got to Libya, it was not in my mind to continue with the journey. So I asked the person that took me to return me to Nigeria but he started maltreating me and sold me to someone who has a connection house in Libya where we were maltreated daily.
“If we don’t want to work, they will start maltreating us. They will do you something that you will wish to die.
“Those who they sold us to, sometimes, use iron and start burning us. At times, they will instruct our fellow ladies to urinate for us to drink,” the Delta State indigene said amidst tears.
According to her, she managed to eventually contact her family in Nigeria and was fortunate to make it back alive unlike many of her peers who joined her on the ill-fated journey.

Manchester City are to appear before the Football Association after admitting breaching anti-doping rules, a club spokesman told AFP on Friday.
The Premier League side are now set to be fined around £25,000 ($31,000, 29,000 euros) after being charged with failing to ensure anti-doping officials knew where their players were for drug-testing.
City had until 1600 GMT Friday to respond after being given more time to assess the charge, which was levelled earlier this month following an alleged third violation of ‘whereabouts’ rules in the last 12 months.
City have now informed the FA, English football’s governing body, they will not be contesting he charge and face a sanction of five figures.
Clubs must provide accurate details of training sessions and player whereabouts so they are available for testing at all times.
A date will now be set for an Independent Regulatory Commission to hear the case.
No specific details of the three incidents involved have been made public, but it is understood City face a general misconduct charge rather than one relating to particular individuals.
Sources have indicated the hearing will be held within the next few days or at most two weeks, rather than months.
The FA conducts drug testing post-match, at training sessions and at players’ home addresses.
Players can be selected for a drug test in either a random or a targeted basis.
In the last FA figures published, in 2014, there were nine violations from a total of 152,286 samples.
The charge facing City is purely an FA matter as the World Anti-Doping Agency and UK Anti-Doping do not have the jurisdiction to cover violations of drug rules by sports teams.
Any fine will be ploughed back into football via the FA, which is a non-profit making organisation.
