Om Puri
As part of the 89th Academy Awards, those in the industry who have passed away were acknowledged in a special segment. Jennifer Aniston introduced it, while Sara Bareilles performed a musical tribute.

Om Puri, who has worked in several Hollywood films, was one of those honoured in the montage. Other legends like Carrie Fisher, Prince, Bill Nunn, Curtis Hanson and more were also remembered.

His family has now released a statement, expressing their gratitude:

The only Indian actor to have worked consistently in Hollywood and British cinema for the last 25 years, without a fuss and letting his work speak for itself, today the Academy of Motion Pictures acknowledged his contribution at its 89th Awards. The first and only Indian actor to be acknowledged thus. Thank you Academy. Thank you everyone. We miss you Om. We miss you lots. Ishaan and Nandita Puri.

A great gesture indeed.

Lady Gaga promises Super Bowl message of inclusion…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2kw73CQ

Lady Gaga is known for her outspoken political views and attention-grabbing outfits but for the Super Bowl, she says her sole message will be inclusion.

The pop superstar also did little to temper speculation that Beyonce, who just announced she is expecting twins, might join her for Sunday’s halftime show in American football’s title match in Houston.

The Super Bowl, traditionally the most-watched television event of the year in the United States, is taking place amid intense divisions over President Donald Trump, of whom Lady Gaga has been a passionate critic.

Asked at a news conference Thursday if she would send a message, Gaga said: “The only statements I’ll be making during the halftime show are the ones that I have been consistently making throughout my career.

“I believe in a passion for inclusion. I believe in the spirit of equality and the spirit of this country as one of love and compassion and kindness,” she said.

Gaga said her show would feature songs from throughout her career and perhaps multiple outfits, although she promised not to wear her notorious meat dress from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

She voiced hope that her 13-minute performance would inspire her fans, who include a sizable gay following.

“That kid that couldn’t get a seat at the cool kids’ table, and that kid that was kicked out of the house because his mom and dad didn’t accept him for who he was — that kid’s going to have the stage for 13 minutes and I’m excited to give it to them,” she said to applause.

Gaga addressed the press conference after posting on Instagram a picture of herself accompanied by an emoji of a bee — seen by some as a hint she would invite Beyonce, whose fans are known as the Beyhive.

Asked about the bee, a tight-lipped Gaga told reporters not to read into it. She said she sent flowers to Beyonce, who on Wednesday dominated social media with news of her pregnancy.

Entertainment Tonight reported Thursday that Beyonce was planning to perform at another major televised event — the Grammy Awards.

The celebrity news site said Beyonce was spotted practicing at a secret location in Los Angeles to prepare for the February 12 gala, where she leads nominations.

Beyonce is originally from Houston. She headlined the Super Bowl halftime show last year in San Francisco, where Lady Gaga sang the national anthem.

Beyonce’s performance last year won acclaim but also criticism from some conservatives as she sang “Formation,” whose video denounces police brutality.

The 51st Super Bowl pits the Atlanta Falcons against the New England Patriots, whose star quarterback Tom Brady is a friend of Trump but has declined to discuss politics.

Gold shines in 2016 on keen investment demand

Demand for gold rose in 2016 to a three-year high, aided by keen investment appetite for the precious metal, the World Gold Council said Friday in a report.

Total demand for gold — whose twin drivers are jewellery and investment buying — advanced two percent to 4,309 tonnes compared with 2015, London-based industry body WGC said in a report.

However, in the final three months of 2016, overall demand retreated 11 percent to 994.1 tonnes from a year earlier.

Investment demand rose in the first, second and third quarters of 2016 by inflows into exchange-traded funds (ETF) — which allow investment without trading on the futures market. But this hit reverse in the fourth quarter.

Jewellery demand meanwhile sank over the year on the back of higher gold prices.

By the end of September 2016, prices had jumped 25 percent as dealers flocked to the safe haven and fretted over global economic worries including Brexit and US election uncertainty.

But the market ended 2016 with an increase of just eight percent, relinquishing some of its gains after President Donald Trump’s conciliatory acceptance speech and the US Federal Reserve’s December interest rate hike.

“The turning point was the US election. Global market reactions to the election outcome surprised most analysts,” the WGC noted in its report.

“Not only did the result remove a significant element of uncertainty among investors, but Trump’s growth-boosting rhetoric increased US interest rate expectations and pushed the US dollar higher.

“This triggered profit-taking among some investors, and a sharp correction (lower) in the gold price.”
