Video emerges of ‘son’ of assassinated Kim Jong-Nam…Read full details

http://ift.tt/2mAkWR3

South Koreans watch a television news showing a video footage of a man who claims he is Kim Han-Sol, a nephew of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un, at a railway station in Seoul on March 8, 2017. A video of a man describing himself as the son of assassinated North Korean exile Kim Jong-Nam emerged Wednesday, apparently the first time a family member has spoken about the killing.

The video was uploaded to the YouTube page of a previously unknown group, Cheollima Civil Defense (CCD), which claimed to have “extracted” vulnerable members of Jong-Nam’s family with the help of the Dutch, US and South Korean authorities, and was keeping them under protection in an undisclosed location.

South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed the individual on the video is Kim Han-Sol.

His father was murdered at Malaysia’s main airport last month by two women using the banned VX nerve agent, with Pyongyang widely blamed for the assassination.

“The man is indeed Kim Han-Sol,” a spokesman for the National Intelligence Service told AFP.

The spokesman declined to give further details, including Kim’s current whereabouts or any information about CCD.

In the video, the man says in English: “My name is Kim Han-Sol, from North Korea, part of the Kim family.

“My father has been killed a few days ago. I’m currently with my mother and my sister. We are very grateful to…” he says, before the audio cuts off and his mouth movements are blacked out.

He shows his North Korean diplomatic passport as evidence of his identity but the page that shows his particulars is digitally covered.

The 40-second video wraps up with him saying: “We hope this gets better soon.”

There was no indication where or precisely when the video was made.

Han-Sol, 21, is believed to have graduated from Sciences Po university in Paris and had been living in exile with his parents in the Chinese territory of Macau before he disappeared with his mother and sister following his father’s death.

Because of his bloodline, Han-Sol could be seen as a rival figurehead in a state ruled by his uncle Kim Jong-Un and roiled by bloody purges.

Malaysia has yet to formally identify the dead man as Kim Jong-Nam or release the body, with police saying they are waiting for next-of-kin to come forward and provide a DNA sample.

– ‘Very painful’ –
On its website — registered only on Saturday — CCD said that it was protecting Kim Jong-Nam’s family.

“Cheollima Civil Defense responded last month to an emergency request by survivors of the family of Kim Jong-Nam for extraction and protection. The three family members were met quickly and relocated to safety,” it said, also in English.

“We have in the past addressed other urgent needs for protection,” it asserted. “This will be the first and last statement on this particular matter, and the present whereabouts of this family will not be addressed.”

The group thanked countries “for the emergency humanitarian assistance afforded to us in protecting this family” including the Netherlands, China and the United States, plus an unspecified fourth government.

It praised the Dutch ambassador to South Korea, Lody Embrechts, in particular “for his timely and strong response to our sudden request for assistance”, calling him “a credit to the people of the Netherlands and their long and principled stance for human rights and humanitarian norms”.

Neither the Netherlands embassy in Seoul nor CCD could be reached for comment by AFP.

“Cheollima” is a mythical winged horse originating in ancient Chinese myths.

CCD uses South Korean transliteration for its name, while some of the Korean text on its website read as if it could have been a translation from English.

Kim Sung-Min, a high-profile defector who operates an anti-Pyongyang radio station, said the group appeared to be associated with activists based in the United States.

South Koreans left messages of encouragement for Han-Sol on YouTube, with some inviting him to defect to the South.

“It must have been very painful for him when he said ‘my father has been killed’,” wrote one user.

Another said: “Be safe. You’re important to us, and to our future as a divided nation.”

Trump to skip correspondents’ dinner as media row heats up…Read full details

President Donald Trump ratcheted up his feud with the US media Saturday, announcing he will skip the annual correspondents’ dinner one day after a row erupted over White House press access.

By skipping the April 29 event Trump breaks a tradition in which the US president is the guest of honor at a light-hearted roast held by journalists and studded with celebrities.

“I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year. Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The White House Correspondents Association, which has organized the annual dinner since 1921 to raise money for journalism scholarships, said it would go ahead with the event as planned.

The dinner “has been and will continue to be a celebration of the First Amendment [on freedom of the press] and the important role played by an independent news media in a healthy republic,” WHCA president Jeff Mason tweeted.

Trump built his presidential campaign on criticizing the mainstream US press — whose editorial boards overwhelmingly opposed his election — and has intensified his rhetoric since taking office, routinely accusing the media of bias in overstating his setbacks and downplaying his accomplishments.

– “Protesting strongly” –
Trump’s cancelation comes one day after the White House triggered widespread outrage by denying access to an off-camera briefing to several major US media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times.

Smaller outlets that have provided favorable coverage of the Trump administration, such as Breitbart and the One America News Network were allowed to attend the briefing by spokesman Sean Spicer.

The WHCA said it was “protesting strongly” against the decision to selectively deny media access, and would bring it up with the Republican administration.

The New York Times described the White House decision as “an unmistakable insult to democratic ideals,” while CNN called it “an unacceptable development” and the Los Angeles Times warned the incident had “ratcheted up the White House’s war on the free press” to a new level.

Hours earlier on Friday, speaking at the annual CPAC gathering of conservative activists and politicians, Trump slammed the mainstream US media as “the enemy of the people,” and labeled the fourth estate “fake news” and the “opposition party.”

Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon, a former head of the right-wing news site Breitbart, predicted at CPAC on Thursday that relations with the media would only get worse as the president rolls out his agenda.

– ‘Unwise’ –
It is not uncommon for Republican and Democratic administrations to brief a limited number of select reporters on specific themes.

However, Friday’s White House event was initially billed as a regular briefing open to credentialed media before it was reconfigured as a closed event for a cherry-picked group of participants, taking place in Spicer’s office.

A number of outlets that regularly cover the White House, including newswires Reuters and Bloomberg, attended. They are part of what is known as the “pool,” a small group of journalists who have access to certain events and share the contents with other media.

The Associated Press boycotted the event in protest at the exclusion of certain colleagues, which included The Los Angeles Times and Politico.

AFP was not included despite being part of the press pool. Its journalist protested, and attended the briefing uninvited.

During the off-camera briefing, Spicer said that the White House has shown an “abundance of accessibility… making ourselves, our team and our briefing room more accessible than probably any previous administration.”

He gave no explanation for the media selection.

As protests erupted over the incident, a December interview re-emerged in which Spicer told Politico that the Trump White House would never ban a news outlet.

“Conservative, liberal or otherwise, I think that’s what makes a democracy a democracy versus a dictatorship,” he said.

Ari Fleischer, a former spokesman for George W. Bush, said he viewed the White House’s stance as “unwise and counterproductive,” but also argued for Friday’s incident to be kept in perspective.

“Press secretaries need to meet with the whole press,” Fleischer told CNN. “But beyond that, there is nothing unusual about presidents meeting with selected reporters, and White House staffs do it all the time too.”

Klopp warns Liverpool to be wary of Hull threat…See full details

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool not to underestimate Hull when they try to revive their title challenge at the Premier League strugglers on Saturday.

Klopp’s side must go one better than Manchester United and beat Hull in the league after the Tigers ground out a goalless draw at Old Trafford in midweek.

In the midst of a difficult period, Liverpool looked back to something approaching their best in a spirited 1-1 draw against leaders Chelsea on Tuesday.

But Liverpool, trailing 10 points behind Chelsea, have won just one of their nine fixtures in 2017 and Klopp believes second-bottom Hull will offer tough opposition despite their lowly position.

“I was really impressed by the way they played against Man United,” Klopp said. “They did not look like a team one place from bottom of the division.

“They played United three times in the league and cup, that’s not easy to do, and they did really well against them.”

Klopp admits he was fortunate to avoid punishment following his highly publicised confrontation with fourth official Neil Swarbrick this week — an escape which enraged United manager Jose Mourinho.

Klopp bellowed aggressively in Swarbrick’s face during his team’s draw with Chelsea, shouting “No one can beat us”.

According to Klopp, the official replied: “No problem, I like your passion.”

Just 24 hours later, Mourinho made reference to the incident while claiming he was threatened with a sending off for similar behaviour during United’s frustrating draw with Hull.

“I think it depends on the fourth official. We all know what we can do,” Klopp said.

“When I saw the picture of me afterwards it didn’t look too nice but it was not as bad as it looked so that is why I said what happened.

“Maybe I was lucky with what the fourth official said because I’ve never heard something like this before.

“There are different ways to handle the situation. It is quite an emotional game and to switch off emotions is not that simple.

“We struggle — not only myself and Jose but Arsene Wenger and a lot of other people struggle.”

– Battling –
Hull manager Marco Silva has urged his players to build on the battling point at United which lifted his side off the bottom of the table.

The Tigers are set to be backed by the KCOM Stadium’s biggest crowd of the season — in excess of 24,000 — as they go in search of only a second league win in three months.

“The result at Old Trafford is one that will give us confidence to take into another difficult game,” Silva said.

“We showed exactly the kind of character, attitude and organisation we need for the rest of the season, and showed also that we have some quality in the team.

“It was a valuable point, but we know that we need more than that to achieve our goal.”

Kamil Grosicki, the Poland midfielder signed from French side Rennes on deadline day, is in contention to make his debut for a Hull side four points adrift of safety in their attempts to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

“We have a tough schedule at the moment, but we are improving with each game,” Silva said.
