Boffins eat your hearts out: the world record holder for the number of university degrees is a cheery but truculent 70-year old Italian.
Luciano Baietti lives in the town of Velletri in the Alban Hills near Rome and spends his days pottering around his small house and garden.
But at every morning at 3am he pulls out his textbooks and starts studying.
He now holds 15 bachelors or masters degrees from universities across Italy, and is already embarking on his 16th.
“Thanks to books, I feel free, dammit,” he tells AFP.
“After all, the words share the same root,” he says, referring to the Italian words libro (book) and libero (free).
The certificates proving his prowess hang on the walls of his study, framing a portrait of the 19th century French essayist, Louis-Francois Bertin, whom he cites as an influence.
– Passion for a challenge –
“He was a man of culture and knowledge,” said Baietti, a former headmaster of a secondary school, who made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 2002 with his eighth degree, that time in motor skills.
At that point he already had degrees in sociology, literature, law, political science and philosophy, most from Rome’s prestigious La Sapienza University, one of the oldest in the world.
Since then he’s added seven others to his list, including one in criminology, a distance-learning one in military strategies from Turin, and the latest in tourism from an online university in Naples, which he was awarded at the start of this month.
“Each time I set myself a new challenge, to see how far my body and my brain can go,” says Baietti, who started life as a sports teacher.
His long-suffering wife, some 30 years his junior, describes Baietti affectionately as “a real character” who is known throughout their town.
He got most of the qualifications under his belt while also doing his day job and volunteering with Italy’s Red Cross.
This ageing eternal student’s first degree was in physical education in 1972 — and he fell instantly in love with the academic world.
“As well as the sporting events, there were modules in theory which I liked, and which gave me a taste for studying,” he says.
– ‘I surprised myself’ –
The most challenging and unusual degree so far has been the military strategies one: “It was co-organised by the defence ministry and Turin University and dealt with sensitive subjects related to national security”.
“We had to attend the exams in uniform,” he recalls, showing off the regimental garb hanging in his wardrobe.
His masters in criminology, which saw him interview prisoners, also had a lasting impact.
“Listening to them, I sometimes surprised myself; I’d be convinced by their arguments, and would wonder about what was right or wrong — before realising that I had gone off course.”
Baietti is back on course, and already preparing to start the next degree, this time in food science.
Once again, he’ll be pouring over his books by the light of his desk lamp as outside the world sleeps on.
“At that time the brain is more open to assimilating knowledge, and it also allows me to keep a normal family life,” he says with a grin.

The Presidency has alerted Nigerians on the possible return of President Muhammadu Buhari from London any moment from today as he is no longer “enjoying his stay’’ outside the country.
Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, made this known in an interview with the Channels Television in Abuja on Tuesday.
President Buhari, who proceeded on vacation to UK on Jan. 19 for a routine medical check as indicated in a letter to the Senate, transmitted another letter to the Senate, on Feb. 5, requesting extension of time to complete the medical check-up.
However, the presidential aide revealed that the president would be returning to Nigeria soonest as he was no longer `comfortable’ with the extended vacation in London.
“As a matter of fact, we should be getting ready to see the president in fresh and that will be soon as possible.
“The President (himself) is looking to being home to be with his people.
“I don’t think he is enjoying any longer with an extended vacation outside the country.’’
On the president’s telephone conversation with President Trump, Shehu described as “undiplomatic’’ the request being made in some quarters for the release of the audio containing the conversation.
According to him, releasing an audio containing telephone conversation between two presidents is highly unethical and against modern day civilization.
“No, I don’t think so; I don’t think it is permitted in international diplomacy. I think if we had recorded Mr Trump in this conversation it would have offended our diplomatic relations.
“I think the Americans themselves would not have recorded this conversation of president to president,’’ he said.
On the president’s test results being expected from his doctors, the presidential aide said he had no information on whether the president had collected the results or not.
He said: “No, we have no information on that (test results). If he had received them, he would have been on the plane back home.’’
Shehu, who noted that there was no enough time for the two presidents to discuss other continental and international, however, expressed optimism that the conversation would boost the bilateral relations between Nigeria and the U.S.
“Well, there wasn’t enough time to talk about everything. I think the point at what will follow is in the invitation that President Trump has extended to our president (Buhari) to come over.
“That is the kind of opportunity that was presented to Nigeria put all the issues on the desk.
“As for their immigration policy, I think our president has been clear about one thing- the choices made by the Americans as to who to lead them in this case, Mr Trump, is entirely their own choice.
“We have no business interfering with their domestic affairs. As to the countries that have barred, it has been clearly specified and Nigeria did not feature in the list,’’ he added.
Buhari had on Monday in London spoke with Trump by telephone at the request of the American President.
According to the president’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, the conversation was cordial and Buhari congratulated Trump on his election as President of the United States and on his cabinet.
Adesina said the two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through provision of necessary equipment. According to him, Trump encourages Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing, and also commends him for the efforts he has made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok Girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian military.
“Trump assured the Nigerian president of the U.S readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism.
“Trump also invited Buhari to Washington at a mutually convenient date,’’ the statement concluded.
The American President has since been putting calls to other world leaders to inform them of his action plans towards the eradication of terrorism in America.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Sunday disclosed that it’s operatives rescued one Abdulkarim Garba, 15, a student of El-kanemi Islamic Collage of Theology (EICT), in Maiduguri from kidnappers.
The Borno Commandant of the corps, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this in Maiduguri on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN). He said Garba was abducted by suspected kidnappers and dumped at Njimtilo area in Maiduguri about 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Abdullahi said that the victim, who is from Yobe, resides at Kasuwar Grain area in Potiskum.
“At about 14:00 our personnel on routine checks along Njimtilo, spotted a young boy who was said to have been abducted, indoctrinated and dumped by suspected kidnappers.
“‘Suspecting his movement, our personnel call the victim and questioned him. It was then he showed them his ID card proving he is a student from El-kanemi Islamic College of Theology (EICT).
“‘At first the boy looked very confused and did not know what he was doing or even were he was. It was later that he gained his senses consciousness and we called his father.
“‘The victim said all he knew was that he entered a commercial vehicle at Borno Express junction going to town when he no longer knew what was going on and was surprised to see himself in Njimtilo.
“‘The victim said that the last thing he recalled was that white powder was sprayed inside the vehicle by one of the passengers, it was then he lost consciousness.’’
Abdullahi said ‘‘the suspects must have changed plans when they saw that they couldn’t penetrate the security checkpoint at Njimtilo and decided to release the victim and run away.
“‘From the description he gave, we suspected that they were ritualists who were trying to kidnap human beings.
“‘We, therefore, caution residents of the state to be wary of entering into any type of commercial vehicles and tricycles.
“People must always watch out for proper registration and number plates to avoid being a victim,’’ Abdullahi said.

Citizens of Turkmenistan went to the polls Sunday for a presidential vote expected to further tighten strongman Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov’s hold over the gas-rich Central Asian country.
The turnout in the country of over 5 million people exceeded 74 percent in the first six hours of voting, the Central Election Commission said.
Berdymukhamedov, 59, faces eight other candidates including low-level regional officials, the director of a government-owned oil refinery and a representative of a state agribusiness complex.
But these candidates are viewed as token opponents for the former dentist and health minister who took power following the death of predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov in 2006.
Casting his vote at a school in the capital Ashgabat on Sunday morning, the president said the vote would decide “the fate of the people for the coming seven years”.
The autocrat was accompanied by family members including his son, who was elected as an MP last year.
“If I am elected then our policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people will continue, Berdymukhamedov said.
Last year Berdymukhamedov signed off on constitutional changes that paved the way for his lifelong rule by stripping away upper age limits for presidential candidates.
Another change lengthened presidential terms from five to seven years.
Voters in Ashgabat overwhelmingly said they were backing Berdymukhamedov.
“I voted for the first time, and chose our president,” said Zokhra, an 18-year old student decked out in bright red national dress who was voting at her university.
“We are deciding our future,” said Zokhra, who was presented with one of Berdymukhamedov’s books and a bunch of flowers by officials after she cast her vote.
One-sided votes are typical in Central Asia, a Muslim-majority ex-Soviet region politically close to Russia and China, where reigning presidents are usually expected to die in power.
“These regimes have a logic of their own and they very much follow that logic,” said Annette Bohr, an associate fellow of the Russia and Eurasia programme at the Chatham House think tank.
Turkmenistan’s regime is “even more repressive and personalist” than those found in neighbouring Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, Bohr said.
“Berdymukhamedov is predictable in that he will do what he has to do in order to perpetuate that regime.”
– Leadership cult –
Like Turkmenistan’s first president Niyazov, who renamed months after family members and wrote a “book of the soul” that was compulsory in schools, Berdymukhamedov has presided over a flowering leadership cult.
Both men are honoured by golden statues in Ashgabat, where natural gas wealth is flaunted in lavish, grandiose white marble architecture, even as other parts of the country suffer poverty.
Berdymukhamedov is officially known as the country’s “Protector” and has written poetry and books on topics from tea to horses.
He is a keen equestrian but fell off his horse after winning a race in 2013 in a incident captured by spectators on video but hushed up by state media.
New York-based watchdog Human Rights Watch said ahead of the polls that Berdymukhamedov has taken “a few modest steps to reverse some of Niyazov’s damaging policies” but has continued some of his “most serious abuses.”
Ahead of the vote, “voters cannot express their views about all candidates in an open manner and without fear,” the group said.
Turkmenistan is set to host the Asian Indoor Games in September and Reporters Without Borders warned Friday that the handful of independent journalists in the country are “being subjected to an unprecedented crackdown” ahead of the showpiece event.
Although Turkmenistan sits on the world’s fourth largest natural gas reserves, it has failed to diversify its economy and remains heavily reliant on exports to China.
At the beginning of 2015 the government devalued the manat currency by 19 percent, while Berdymukhamedov has warned of the need to raise tariffs for water, gas and electricity, which were all free under Niyazov.

Musa Ahmad, who works with the military against Boko Haram Islamists, said the incident happened at about 11:30 am (1030 GMT) in Banki, near the Cameroon border in Borno state.
“A girl of around 10 came by the military barracks and was trying to cross the road into the IDP (internally displaced persons) camp,” he told AFP.
“She was asked to stop by soldiers. But she ignored them. They threatened to shoot her if she didn’t stop. She obeyed and she was asked to lift up her hijab.
“She did and explosives were found to be strapped on her. Suddenly she pulled on the trigger and exploded.”
No-one else was injured, said Ahmad, who added it was the second attempt on the camp in recent weeks.
On January 18, a young woman and a teenage boy were shot when they refused to stop for a search and exploded just outside the camp, he added.
The vigilante suggested the attempted bombings were a way of Boko Haram “trying to hit back” after recent military operations against them in the area.
Banki, which is 133 kilometres (80 miles) by road southeast of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, is currently home to thousands of IDPs.
In April last year, at least seven people were killed at the camp in a suicide bomb attack carried out by two women.
Boko Haram has frequently deployed young women and children as suicide bombers to target crowded places such as mosques, markets and bus stations.
On Tuesday, at least one person was killed when a suicide bomber exploded at a mosque at Dalori, on the outskirts of Maiduguri, during morning prayers, residents and the authorities said.
Shuaibu Abubakar said the blast happened at about 5:30 am (0430 GMT) as a suicide bomber tried to enter the place of worship.
“One of the worshippers, who was apparently on guard, grabbed him and the explosives went off, killing both of them. Worshippers were saved,” he said.
Tens of thousands of people displaced by the conflict are currently living at two camps set up at Dalori.
On January 30 last year, at least 85 people were killed when militant fighters stormed and torched Dalori, sending local residents fleeing into the bush.
