FBI asks Justice Department to refute Trump wiretapping claim…Read full details

FBI Director James Comey has asked the Justice Department to publicly refute President Donald Trump’s explosive, unsubstantiated accusation that Barack Obama tapped his phone during last year’s election campaign, US media reported on Sunday.

Comey’s extraordinary measure questioning the president’s truthfulness provides an indication of the implications of Trump’s incendiary claim about his predecessor. The department has not made any statement.

Trump’s aides were scrambling on Sunday to limit the political fallout of Trump’s accusation 24 hours after it was made — admitting it was still unproven, and calling on Congress to investigate.

Citing still undefined “reports” of “politically motivated investigations,” press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump was calling on Congress to “determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016.”

Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders echoed those comments.

“If this happened,” she told ABC, “this would be the greatest abuse of power, and overreach, that has ever occurred in the executive branch.”

Trump, who has returned to Washington from a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in West Palm Beach, Florida, has not publicly commented further on his allegations.

On Saturday, he tweeted: “How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!” He provided no evidence to back up the claim.

Watergate is the generic term for the scandal that brought down president Richard Nixon in 1974. It began with the revelation of a secret wiretap in the offices of the Democratic National Committee at Washington’s Watergate Hotel.

Obama, via a spokesman, denied Trump’s new allegation as “simply false.”

US presidents can’t legally order such wiretaps, which require the approval of a federal judge and reasonable grounds for suspicion.

Obama’s director of national intelligence James Clapper told NBC there was “no such wiretap activity mounted against the president-elect at the time as a candidate or against his campaign.”

– President ‘furious’ –
Trump’s comments appear to have been based on unverified claims made by the right-wing Breitbart News outlet. His chief strategist, Steve Bannon, used to run it.

The New York Times, citing senior US officials, first reported that Comey believes Trump’s claim to be false.

The FBI director made the request on Saturday because “there is no evidence to support it, and it insinuates that the FBI broke the law,” the paper reported the officials as saying.

Previous media reports have indicated that US prosecutors investigated communications between a server registered to the Trump Organization and a Russian bank.

In his roles as a reality TV showman and presidential candidate, and now as president, Trump has repeatedly embraced conspiracy theories, including the suggestion that Obama was not born in America. Obama was born in Hawaii, a US state.

Trump leveled the latest charges in a string of tweets early Saturday, at the end of a week in which his administration was battered by controversy over links between his advisors and Russian officials.

Trump was said to be furious that good reviews of his maiden speech to Congress on Tuesday were overtaken by a series of revelations about aides’ meetings with Russian officials.

The president was also said to be angry that Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any campaign or Russia-related investigations.

Sessions’ recusal came after it emerged that, speaking under oath during his Senate confirmation hearings about campaign contacts with Russia, he failed to disclose two meetings with Moscow’s ambassador in Washington.

Amid that and several other revelations of Trump aides holding meetings with Russian officials, the White House has denied allegations of collusion.

– Diversionary tactics –
US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a campaign to meddle in last November’s presidential election in a bid to tilt it in Trump’s favor.

Former CIA director Leon Panetta on Sunday accused Trump of diversionary tactics.

“They are trying to obfuscate and trying to cover up. They are trying to somehow raise other issues,” he told CBS.

“In the end, it is going to be the truth that will determine what is involved here, and not tweets, but the truth.”

However, the Republican chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Devin Nunes, said his panel would look into Trump’s claims.

“The Committee will make inquiries into whether the government was conducting surveillance activities on any political party’s campaign officials or surrogates, and we will continue to investigate this issue if the evidence warrants it,” he said in a statement.

Democrats and a growing number of Republicans in Congress have called for the appointment of a special prosecutor and a bipartisan inquiry to look into the Russia issue.

With approval ratings already low, Trump could do without another scandal in his young presidency.

Republicans have largely stood behind him, hoping he will enact tax cuts and other policies they favor.

But some Republican lawmakers appear to be losing patience with the drama of Trump’s presidency.

“We are in the midst of a civilization-warping crisis of public trust,” Senator Ben Sasse said, adding that Trump’s allegations of wiretapping “demand the thorough and dispassionate attention of serious patriots.”

Almost 1.4 million children suffering from severe malnutrition could die this year from famine in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen, the UN children’s agency said Monday.

In Yemen, where war has been raging for nearly two years, 462,000 children are suffering from acute malnutrition while 450,000 children are severely malnourished in northeast Nigeria.

Fews Net, the famine early warning system, said some remote areas of Nigeria’s Borno state are already affected by famine since late last year and the disaster is likely to continue as aid agencies are unable to reach those in need.

Drought in Somalia has left 185,000 children on the brink of famine but that figure is expected to reach 270,000 in the next few months, said UNICEF.

In South Sudan, over 270,000 children are malnourished and a famine has just been declared in parts of Unity State in the north of the country, where 20,000 children live.

UNICEF director Anthony Lake appealed for quick action. “We can still save many lives,” he said.

UN Security Council ambassadors are due to travel to northern Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger next month to draw international attention to the humanitarian crisis triggered by the conflict with Boko Haram militants.

Newlyweds and soldiers at North Korea memorial to Kims…Read full details

Performers take part in a mass dance event on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong-Il, in Pyongyang on February 16, 2017.<br />North Korea marks Kim Jong-Il's February 16 birthday as the "Day of the Shining Star", although accounts differ as to where and when he was born. / AFP PHOTO / Ed JONES

North Korean newlyweds, soldiers and children lined up to laud their country’s rulers on Thursday, the birthday of the late Kim Jong-Il, father of both the current leader and the exiled renegade assassinated in Malaysia this week.

A steady stream of celebrants made their way to a hill in the centre of Pyongyang where a giant bronze statue of Kim Il-Sung, founder of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the family dynasty, looks out over the capital, arm outstretched.

Beside him stands an effigy of his heir Kim Jong-Il, whose youngest son Kim Jong-Un now leads the country, and whose first-born, playboy and occasional regime critic Kim Jong-Nam, was murdered in Malaysia this week, with Seoul blaming two female North Korean agents.

Over the course of the day, thousands of people lined up, laid a flower, bouquet or basket — all featuring Kimjongilia, the red flower named after the late leader — and bowed.

“The great president Kim Il-Sung and great leader Kim Jong-Il will always be with us,” read ribbons attached to the baskets.

Retired financial official Kim Myong-Hui said she made hers herself.

“It is the birthday of our great leader,” the 51-year-old told AFP, her voice trembling. “We come to the hill to pay our respects every year because comrade Kim Jong-Il lives eternally in the hearts of the people.

“Even though he has passed away, he is always in my heart.”

North Korea’s official media have made no mention of Kim Jong-Nam’s killing in Malaysia and it is unlikely many of the attendees will have been aware of it.

Some were in organised groups, many were family outings because the Day of the Shining Star, as February 16 is known, is the start of a two-day public holiday in the North and a popular time to wed.

“We came here to show the great president and great comrade first that we have become a married couple,” said Kang Un-Chol, 31.

His new wife Ri Hyang-Sun, 27, added: “Coming here on the birthday of our great comrade Kim Jong-Il for my wedding, I can passionately feel in my heart how happy our new generation is in our nation that was created by our great president.”

Both wore badges depicting the two Kims on their wedding clothes.

– ‘Strong fist’ –
Accounts differ as to where and when Kim Jong-Il was born.

Officially, he came into the world on the slopes of Mount Paektu, the spiritual birthplace of the Korean nation, in 1942, which would make Thursday the 75th anniversary of the event.

But according to independent historians he was actually born a year earlier and in the Soviet Union, where his father was in exile.

Both Moscow and Beijing backed their fellow Communist against US-led UN forces during the 1950-53 Korean War, which left the peninsula divided and with a heavy military presence on either side of the DMZ.

Kim Jong-Il went on to oversee the North’s first atomic tests and under Jong-Un the country’s nuclear and missile programmes — which have seen it subjected to multiple rounds of UN Security Council sanctions — have accelerated.

The latest rocket launch, earlier this week, was described by the North as a medium long range device using solid fuel, which would enable faster deployment and cut down potential warning times.

“This is something that we must do,” said construction company official Hwang Ji-Min, 66. “The DPRK has lived under the suppression of the US. It is still suppressed.

“There is an old saying that having a strong fist will fend off any challengers. That is why we will continue. It is justified to crush them to pieces.”

Pyongyang insists that its weapons are for defensive purposes, but regularly issues blood-curdling threats and in his New Year’s address Kim Jong-Un said it was in the final stages of developing an intercontinental ballistic missile, which could put the US mainland within range.

The latest launch “showed the world our country’s military might”, soldier Ju Seong-Hyeok said at the Mansudae hill, adding: “I am certain that our military will win if there is a war.”

He came to the monument, he said, “because I missed our father, the great comrade Kim Jong-Il.

“The great leaders are always in our hearts.”

Libya rescues 120 migrants off Tripoli coast

http://ift.tt/2kc6w5p

PHOTO:AFP

More than 120 migrants including women and children were rescued by Libyan coastguards Sunday off the coast of Tripoli after their boat ran into trouble.

The migrants set off Friday from Sabratha — a town 70 kilometres (45 miles) west of Libya’s capital that has become a staging ground for traffickers — but their boat’s engine failed, a coastguard official said.

An AFP photographer at the scene of the rescue said the vessel was intercepted by a coastguard patrol boat around 20 nautical miles northeast of Tripoli.

The official said those on board were of various African nationalities and included 10 women and five children, including a baby.

Libya said on Saturday it had intercepted more than 400 migrants bound for Europe in recent days.

The announcement followed a meeting of European Union leaders in Malta where they agreed moves to curb mass migration from Libya.

The plan includes funding and training Libya’s coastguard to make it better able to intercept migrant boats and helping neighbouring countries to close routes into Libya, according to a draft statement seen by AFP.

Lawlessness in Libya since a 2011 uprising that ousted longtime strongman Moamer Kadhafi has allowed smuggling networks to develop a lucrative trafficking trade.

Italy’s coastguard said Thursday that more than 1,750 migrants had been rescued in the Mediterranean within 24 hours.

Around 230 people have died en route to Europe since the start of 2017, according to the United Nations.

The Biography Of Ayo Fayose [Age, Life Profile & Net Worth]

http://ift.tt/2ksa1pt

p

Peter Ayodele Fayose (born November 15, 1960) or simply Ayo Fayose, is the current governor of Ekiti State in Nigeria .

Fayose grew up in Oyo State where he attended Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo.

He is married to Feyisetan. He conducted one of the most sought after medical outreach programmes during his political campaign in 2001.

Fayose became the second executive governor of Ekiti on 29 May 2003 after defeating the then incumbent Governor Niyi Adebayo in the Ekiti State governorship elections. Fayose could not complete his tenure as a result of an impeachment on 16 October 2006.

During the 2014 Governorship election in Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose was again the PDP flag bearer. He won the election and was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission as the new Governor, Ekiti State; he was inaugurated on 16 Oct 2014.

Fayose who now boast of been the only Nigerian to defeat an incumbent two times historically returned to office 8 years after his impeachment, on the same date.

An army intelligence officer Captain Sagir Koli of the Nigerian Army 32nd Artilery Brigade, secretly recorded a vote-rigging plan on June 20, 2014 when he was asked to accompany his the commanding Officer, Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh, to a meeting at Spotless Hotel in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The 37-minute audio recording was attended by the eventual “winner” of the election, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State; Senator Iyiola Omisore of Osun State; a member of the National Assembly Abdul Kareem; the Minister for Police Affairs Alhaji Jelili Adesiyan; the former Minister for Police Affairs and navy captain Caleb Olubolade; the Minister of State for Defense Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and PDP Anambra chieftain and failed senate candidate Chris Uba, as they bribed army Brigadier General Momoh with a rank promotion for his assistance in carrying out election fraud in Ekiti State.

For exposing the vote-rigging of the Ekiti State governor election of Fayose, Captain Sagir Koli was praised by the military for his “non-partisanship and professional conduct during the election period.”

On April 4, 2016, the disgraced brigadier-general Aliyu Momoh was dishonourably sacked from the Nigerian military based on the recommendations of a military panel set up by the Army authorities to look into allegations of professional misconduct against military personnel in the conduct of the June 14, 2014 governorship poll in Ekiti State, the 2015 general elections and the August, 2014 governorship election in Osun State.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission froze four Zenith Bank accounts used by Fayose to launder money for his Ekiti governorship election in 2014 in a lawsuit no. FHC/CS?871/2016 titled “Federal Republic of Nigeria Vs Zenith bank PLC account numbers 1003126654, 9013074033, 1010170969 and 1013835889.”

The judge Justice Mohammed Idris had granted the EFCC on June 24, 2016 an order freezing all the funds in the said accounts in Zenith Bank. Two accounts belong to Governor Ayo Fayose while the third belongs to his hotel Spotless Hotel in Ado Ekiti. The fourth account was operated by one of Fayose’s aides, Abiodun Agbele, who is under EFCC custody.

The EFCC had alleged that those accounts possessed funds, said to be about N4.7 billion (US$20mn)stolen from the office of the National Security Adviser,, with most of the money secretly retained by Fayose for his personal use after the election.

On June 22, 2016, Fayose had claimed that Aisha Buhari, the wife of the Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari was the same person (who had claimed to be a daughter of General Muhammadu Buhari) indicted by a US Court for transferring $170,000 to indicted US Congressman, Williams Jefferson, in the William J. Jefferson corruption case involving Halliburton and that she was avoiding arrest by US authorities by failing to accompany her husband on his three presidential visits to the United States.

However when Aisha Buhari travelled to Washington DC in August 4, 2016, Fayose subsequently claimed that her US visit did not invalidated the Haliburton judgement against her, saying “Has traveling to the US invalidated the judgment that said Aisha Buhari transferred $170,000 to Jefferson’s account? “Has traveling to the US erased the fact that Aisha Buhari transferred $170,000 to Williams Jefferson?.

Ayo Fayose’s net worth is estimated $380 million (net worth estimated in 2017).

DPR seals 7 filling stations over hoarding (Read full details)

http://ift.tt/2k2HjdY

Petrol station

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has sealed up seven filling stations in Gusau, Zamfara for hoarding and selling petrol above the official pump price of N145 per litre.

The acting Operation Controller in charge of Kaduna Zonal Office of DPR, Alhaji Abdullahi Abawa, made this known to newsmen in Gusau on Friday after he inspected some filling stations.

“We observe that most of the filling stations are running away from the law, most of them are involved in hoarding, selling of fuel above approved pump price and under dispensation.

“We will make sure that we put marketers in check because the consuming public are suffering and DPR will not continue to allow some unlawful marketers to make things difficult for the people.

However, the controller directed the sealed filling stations’ owners to report at the DPR zonal office in Kaduna for more explanation on their actions.

He urged marketers in the state to shun sharp practices and to follow the rules and regulations guiding their businesses.

Abawa advised the public and newsmen to always draw the attention of the DPR to the marketers’ wrong doings.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some filling stations in the state are selling petrol between N150 and N170 per litre as against the official price of N145.
