Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane hailed goalkeeper Keylor Navas’s contribution as the European champions leapfrogged Barcelona into top spot in La Liga despite the latest a series of blunders this season from the Costa Rican on Sunday.

Navas pulled off a stunning stoppage time save from Antonio Sarabia to secure a 2-1 win for Madrid over Real Betis.

However, it was his own goal that put the visitors in front at the Bernabeu and he was also extremely lucky to avoid being sent-off after just 20 minutes.

“I said to him at half-time ‘anyone can make a mistake’”, said Zidane.

Navas appeared to chop down Darko Brasanac on the edge of the Madrid area as he raced from his goal with no covering defenders, but referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz waived play on.

And just moments later Navas bundled Sarabia’s shot into his own goal having appeared to have the effort under control.

“The most important thing for me is the support Keylor received from his teammates,” added Zidane.

“They know how important he is and in the end he made a great save to get us the three points.”

Madrid were once again bailed out by headers from Cristiano Ronaldo and captain Sergio Ramos.

Ronaldo levelled five minutes before half-time.

And after Betis had been reduced to 10 men by Cristiano Piccini’s second yellow card, centre-back Ramos powered home his 10th goal of the season from Toni Kroos’s corner nine minutes from time.

Victory moves Madrid two points clear of Barcelona at the top of the table and with a game in hand to come.

“I would be happier if we scored two or three goals at the start,” said Zidane.

“But we remain calm because we know we can score at any moment.”

Just as in a 3-1 Champions League win at Napoli in midweek, Ramos and Real Madrid did their damage from set-pieces.

However, Zidane wants more creativity from Los Blancos.

“Today we were patient in difficult moments and kept a cool head,” continued the Frenchman.

“We also know we are strong a set plays. I would like to score more goals from open play though.”

Ramos, meanwhile, pleaded for more understanding from the Madrid fans after Navas was whistled for his two first-half mistakes.

“We know the Bernabeu is a very difficult stadium, the demands are infinite,” Ramos told BeIN Sports Spain.

“When the players make a mistake, they need the love of the crowd. In the end he saved us with a brilliant save.”

ABUJA- AS the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Thursday, released time table for 2019 general elections, over 300, 000 youths under the auspices of Concerned Nigerian Youth Development Organisation, CNYDO, have declared their support and endorsement for former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to the next President come 2019.

This was contained in statement released on Friday and signed by the National Coordinator, CNYDO, Comrade Joel Edegba, where he described Abubakar as man of the voiceless and downtrodden Nigerians.

The statement reads in part, “We in Concerned Nigerian Youth Development Organisation, CNYDO, with over 300, 000 membership in 30 states have deemed it necessary to support and endorse former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, (Turakin Adamawa), as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, come 2019 by the grace of God.

“We have carefully assessed the political ideology, track record, achievement and competence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as former Vice President and seen that he is the man that can bring the expected change in Nigeria.

“We are endeared to his commitment demonstrated towards the welfare and well being of Nigerians that are down trodden and forgotten. We are assuring His Excellency our maximal support for his ambition and as part of his move to liberate Nigerians, the youths in particular from the shackles of unemployment, poverty, social vices and stagnated progress by ensuring that he is elected as Nigeria’s next President in 2019.

“Based on his political achievements, prudent manager of human and material resources, a detribalised Nigerian, non-religious and non-region biased nature and understanding in approaching issues that affects the different ethnic and tribal groups in the country we declare that Nigeria will be in safe hands of Atiku.

Explaining the rational and decision by CNYDO to declare its support for the Former Vice President the statement further reads, “We fell in love with his passion for the ordinary Nigerians by extending his hand of love and compassion to them as he has given lifeline and hope to many Nigerians both known and unknown.

“We also discovered that Turkin has been a man who has thrown his weight behind the voice of the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria, and recently, passionately supported the call for restructuring of Nigeria and true federalism, which majority of Nigerians have been agitating for long time.”

According to the statement the APC chieftain’s political ideology have been people based, by being centred on egalitarianism, given back resources to the states for proper utilisation and development of their people and also for all to enjoy maximally what God has blessed them with.

Lock-in’ paralysis patients report being happy

International scientists for the first time have found a way to communicate with people who are completely paralysed from degenerative motor neurone disease – and found that they report being happy.

The report in Tuesday’s journal PLOS Biology is based on four people with complete “lock-in” syndrome, meaning they are unable to move at all due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), which destroys the part of the nervous system responsible for movement.

Patients are unable to blink or move their eyes, and they breathe with the help of a ventilator.

But using a non-invasive brain-computer interface that measured levels of oxygen on the brain, researchers were able to detect whether the patients were thinking “yes” or “no” in response to a series of questions, with an accuracy rate of about 70 percent.

Some of the questions were common, such as asking a woman if her husband’s name was Joachim, or if Berlin was the capital of France.

A man was asked if his daughter should marry her boyfriend and answered “no” nine out of 10 times.

All four patients in the study were asked, “Are you happy?”

They each consistently responded “yes,” over weeks of questioning.

“We were initially surprised at the positive responses when we questioned the four completely locked-in patients about their quality of life,” said lead author Niels Birbaumer, a professor at the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering in Geneva, Switzerland.

“All four had accepted artificial ventilation in order to sustain their life when breathing became impossible; thus, in a sense, they had already chosen to live.”

Until now, researchers had believed that people with this condition were unable to communicate because they lack the goal-directed thinking necessary to use a brain-computer interface.

“The striking results overturn my own theory that people with the completely locked-in syndrome are not capable of communication,” said Birbaumer.

“We found that all four patients we tested were able to answer the personal questions we asked them, using their thoughts alone,” he added.

“If we can replicate this study in more patients, I believe we could restore useful communication in completely locked-in states for people with motor neurone diseases.”

The technique in the study used near-infrared spectroscopy combined with electroencephalography (EEG) to measure blood oxygenation and electrical activity in the brain.

Other brain-computer interfaces have helped some paralysed patients communicate, but these tend to require eye movements in order to work.

More studies are planned to see if the technique could help more people with paralysis resulting from ALS, or those who have suffered a stroke or spinal cord injury.
